FHM 2014: The Oil and The Cup

Founded in 1972 as the Alberta Oilers, the Edmonton Oilers joined the NHL for the 1979 season. Edmonton was truly the class of the 1980s NHL, replacing the late 70s, early 80s Islanders as the league's true dynasty. Winning Stanley Cups in 83-84, 84-85, 87-87, 87-88 and 89-90, the Oilers led by the star power of Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Jari Kurri, the list of talent on those teams goes on and on. Since then, the playoffs have been sparse. Here and there, but never any consistent runs.

Having not made the playoffs since 2007-08s run to the Stanley Cup final and eventual defeat to the Carolina Hurricanes, the Oil have not seen the playoffs. The past few years have seen a host of top draft picks come into the club, but still they remain at the cellar of the Western Conference.

Owner Daryl Katz has become tired with the high picks and no return to the playoffs. He has cleared out the General Manager and Head Coach, hiring 37 year-old American Atticus Andrews to play the coach-general manager role for the club.

Can Andrews bring along players such as Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Nail Yakupov, Jordan Eberle and Justin Schultz? Can he make the Oilers a force in the West once again? Or is this a team that has become mired in the tar sands of Alberta, stuck in neutral with nowhere to go?

Defenseman Jeff Petry has agreed to a new 3-year contract extension worth $2.85M per season.

Goaltender Devan Dubnyk has signed a 5 year contract extension worth $792K per season.

The Dubnyk deal is fantastic business for us, especially with the way he's playing this year. It allows us the opportunity to potentially spend some decent money on a better caliber player in the summer.

Are the stats in the league leaders WAY off? Just the goals against column confuses the hell out of me with starters having 0 and pavelec only having 19.

That's one of the oddities. The other I've noticed is that the shot totals for offensive players seem low. Also, overtime wins are lumped in with overall overtime. So Dubnyk was 14-4-6 at one point when it was really 18-4-2.

Klefbom will play a bigger part and sooner rather than later. He's going to give Ference a run at the third pairing.

I'd like to stick with Nurse through hell and high water. He's got a ton of potential, I want him to play.

I love the first three lines. The fourth line is young and isn't the typical bruising checking line. I've a feeling they may hurt me defensively more often than not, but they're talented kids.
