Sector Four – Engi Homeworlds

Crew – Col. CW (master pilot), Tellistto (shields), B. Gale (weapons)

First Beacon
We meet a trader and barter 12 scrap for 6 fuel.

We now had 15 fuel and 3 scrap.

Second Beacon
Another Zoltan study to participate in.

We receive 28 scrap (31) and more of those delicious small cakes.

Third Beacon
We arrive to see some struggling Engi ships and ask if we can help. They decline and we ship out.

Fourth Beacon
A Pirate! Finally some action in this sector.

They offer us 5 fuel, 4 missiles and 27 scrap to stop the fight.

We accept.

Fifth Beacon
Nothing but an Engi shipyard.

Sixth Beacon
We are hailed by a loyalist settlement.

We receive 3 fuel (18), 1 drone part (8) and 35 scrap (93).

Seventh Beacon
We survive a tough battle with a Mantis ship and boarder that nearly kills Gale and Tellistto.

We receive 1 missile (14), 1 drone part (9), 32 scrap (125) and Augment: Weapon Pre-igniter. All weapons will be available to fire from the outset of a fight.

The ship we saved patches up our hull to full strength.

Eighth Beacon
We search for a ship that shows signs of life within a dense asteroid field.

We grab a strange stasis pod before an asteroid can destroy the derelict ship.

We receive: 26 scrap (151) and Augment: Damaged Stasis Pod.

Ninth Beacon
A Federation encrypted signal is being broadcast from a nearby party. We head down to investigate.

“It's a trap!”

A Rebel Fighter is pleased with their first catch of the day.

We win the day and 1 missile (14), 1 drone part (10) and 45 scrap (196).

Tenth Beacon
Nothing doing here.

Eleventh Beacon
The Long-Range Beacon!

We find an abandoned mining station on a nearby moon. We discover 19 scrap (215) and a Drone: Defense Drone Mark I.

We spend 210 scrap to upgrade the shields to level 4 and add one bar to the reactor. One more bar and we can activate the shield.

Sector Five – Mantis Homeworlds

What am I thinking?

Crew – Col. CW (master pilot), Tellistto (master shields), B. Gale (weapons)

First Beacon
An auto-scout in an asteroid field. This feels strangely familiar.

We receive 3 fuel (14), 1 drone part (11) and 52 scrap (57).

Second Beacon
Nothing but dead space here.

We upgrade our med bay for 35 scrap.

Third Beacon
Giant Alien Spiders. Can we survive it?

Benton Gale did not make it out alive.

Fourth Beacon
Nothing here either.

Fifth Beacon
An asteroid field and fairly tough auto-scout.

These battles are a breeze when weapons are ready to go from the start.

We receive 2 fuel (12), 1 drone part (12) and 52 scrap (74).

Sixth Beacon
We head for the relative safety of a shop.

We spend 60 scrap on the Reverse Ion Field augment which has a 20% chance to negate all ion damage.

We also repair the hull and purchase 1 fuel (12) and 1 missile (14) leaving us with 2 scrap.

Seventh Beacon
A Mantis military scout mocks and engages.

Another quick win. We receive 3 fuel (14), 1 drone part (13) and 45 scrap (47).

Eighth Beacon
A Rock fighter lures us in with a distress signal.

They offer us a bribe, and then try and jump, but all attempts are futile.

We receive 2 fuel (15), 1 drone part (14) and 46 scrap (93).

Ninth Beacon
We're in close to a star, a well shielded and armed Mantis ship with a transporter on board. Ugh.

The ship goes down quickly, the invaders do not. They take out our shields, piloting systems and sensors.

Unfortunately... this fantastic run has met it's end.

Solar flares consume the ship in fire knocking out more systems than we can reach or repair. The crew loses oxygen and the ship is eventually blown to bits by the flare.

SCORE: 1,982

I am so disappointed because this run was shaping up so nicely and had so much potential.

The FOFC V

The FOFC V

Fifth time's the charm? We have gone through all 12 willing participants of dying in space, so now we'll be randomly mixing up the teams.

Still not involved? Why not!? Dying in space is most excellent. Would you like to know more?

Anyway, I have several other ships unlocked, some with more crew members than others. I am thinking of sticking with the Kestrel in this series until I beat the game on Easy with it. Then, the switch will be made to Normal and we can perhaps test out some of the other ships I've unlocked.

Fun fact, I've unlocked all but 3 of them. One of them is the Mantis ship, so I will continually subject this forum to runs through the brutal Mantis Homeworlds until I unlock that damn ship.

Fair enough?

Off we go.

Sector One – Civilian Sector

Crew – finektr (pilot), Grover (shields), britrock88 (weapons)

First Beacon
No one hails our ship. Time to press on.

Second Beacon
It's a dastardly pirate!

The Slug Interceptor's missile and lasers miss completely and our first volley takes out their shields and weapons. They start their jump sequence but our next round from the Burst Laser Mk II puts them out of their misery.

We receive 3 fuel (17), 1 drone part (1) and 18 scrap (48).

Third Beacon
A Rebel scout is on an attack approach to a small refueling outpost as we jump in. Their weapons are charged, but haven't fired. We decide to intervene to defend the outpost.

They deploy an attack drone that floats around us, doing little damage to anything. A round from the missiles and lasers take out the shields and weapons... and you know the drill from there.

We receive 2 fuel (18), 2 missiles (8) and 24 scrap (72).

The outpost hails us, “The pompous bastards expected free service just because they defeated the federation. Take this for the help!”

We receive 3 fuel (21) and 20 scrap (92).

We spend 90 to upgrade the shields to level two and add two power bars to the reactor.

Fourth Beacon
We jump into a sector of the nebula beset by a plasma storm. A vaunted Rebel auto-scout stationed at the beacon moves in to attack.

The nebula has our reactor running at half-power. Auto-pilot and sensors are shut down. The med-bay is shut down. Only the missiles are fully active. Shields and engines at half-power.

We make the first hit with our missile, disabling their weapons. We immediately shutdown our shields to divert power to the Burst Laser, efficiently taking out the scout.

We receive 3 fuel (23), 1 drone part (2) and 20 scrap (22).

Fifth Beacon
A well-armed pirate ship approaches us. “Hand over one of your crew-members and the rest of you can go free unharmed!”

I think that surrender is not an option, as much as finektr would probably love another early game exit.

After two rounds from the lasers, they surrender and offer one of their slaves as a crew member. We happily accept and welcome Vincent aboard The FOFC V. He'll be plying his trade in the engine room.

Sixth Beacon
We spot a small Rebel ship nearby. It's been refitted for transport rather than combat. We demand the surrender of their goods and prepare to secure their cargo by force.

They immediately prepare to escape and their engines and piloting systems are quickly destroyed. From there it was only another round before they went.

We receive 1 fuel (22), 1 drone part (3) and 27 scrap (49).

Seventh Beacon
A patrolling Rebel auto-scout. Our personal favorite. In the words of lasers “pew pew pew.”

We receive a measly 15 scrap (64) from the ship, but our map has been updated with details of the sector.

Eighth Beacon
More nebula cruising, but we're still fully functional, but for our sensors. A black market weapons trader tries to sell us a weapon for 65 scrap. Shame we have 64. We'll attack him instead.

His offer of surrender does not include the weapon he offered to sell, so we blow him out of space.

We receive 1 fuel (21), 1 missile (5) and 20 scrap (84).

We spend 50 scrap to upgrade the reactor with two additional power bars.

Ninth Beacon
A station offers repairs. We don't need no repairs!

Oh, hey. Apparently that ship in the nebula caused a fire in one of our holds near an airlock. I realize this after we're about to jump. Airlocks open, fire dies without oxygen. Everybody wins.

Tenth Beacon
The Long-Range Beacon!

A station offers to sell us 12 scrap for 3 drone parts. Sure!

We now have 46 scrap and 0 drone parts.

Sector Two – Zoltan Controlled Space

Crew – finektr (pilot), Grover (shields), britrock88 (weapons), Vincent (engines).

First Beacon
A nebula kills our sensors, but there's nothing out there. It's eerily quiet.

Second Beacon
We jump into a debris field that was once a Zoltan cruiser. Its Engi escort takes us as the attack and retaliates. The stupid robots refuse all hails.

They've got a defense drone that shoots down missiles. We'll rely on the lasers. Until of course, the shields and drone are disabled. Boom goes the Engi ship.

We receive 1 fuel (17), 1 drone part (1) and 21 scrap (67).

Third Beacon
Nothing but space. Space forever.

Fourth Beacon
We arrive to find a lumbering Zoltan freighter with no one at the helm. It's a mystery what happened to the crew, but it'd be a damn shame to let all this loot go to waste.

We receive 3 fuel (18), 1 missile (5) and 34 scrap (101).

Need more missiles.

Fifth Beacon
A small pirate ship is looting a small Zoltan cruiser. They spot us and move in.

We'll rely on the lasers for these easier ships until we can get a larger cache of missiles. We prevail, but not until after they knock out our engines and disable the weapons. Vincent and britrock88 are quickly in the trenches with wrenches to get the ship fully functional once more.

We receive 1 missile (6), 1 drone part (2) and 29 scrap (130).

I am waiting for the opportunity to purchase another laser weapon to upgrade the ship before I splash it all out on level 3 shields.

Sixth Beacon
A Zoltan academy sits docked just outside the beacon perimeter. They're happy to show us the sweet, delicious fruits of their labor and offer us something succulent to take home with us.

We receive 15 scrap (145) and Augment: Repair Arm.

The Repair Arm will repair the hull, but we'll receive 15% less scrap.

Seventh Beacon
We're hailed by a Rebel ship. “When the rebellion is complete, you'll see the safer world we provide. Well, you won't, but you get the point.” They arm weapons.

They knock our hull to around 70%, but we prevail in the end. Finektr has to make some expert repairs to the piloting systems, but we're back on the, er... road.

We receive 2 fuel (17), 1 drone part (3) and 26 scrap (171).

Eighth Beacon
A Rebel auto-scout! Joy!

We apparently attempt to hide behind a nearby moon, but it circumnavigates and Magellan's us on the other side.

Avoiding missiles once more, we take home a victory and some goods.

We receive 2 missiles (6), 1 drone part (4) and 17 scrap (188).

Ninth Beacon
What appears to be a Zoltan science ship requests permission to dock.

We allow them to approach, but are caught unawares when they open fire! Those bastards!

The Zoltan captain sends an urgent hail. “Wait! This was a test! A test that you passed! A diverse crew, working together, surely a sight to warm the heart of any dispassionate observer! Come, I shall join your crew!”

We receive 1 missile (4), 1 drone part (5) and 12 scrap (200).

We also receive Berko the Zoltan.

Tenth Beacon
Another unmanned ship patrols the area. Yaaaawn.

We receive 2 missiles (5), 1 drone part (6) and 28 scrap (228).

Eleventh Beacon
There are few more zealous in their customs checks than the Zoltan. A team of border police beam on board. There's just a little confusion over our weapons licenses. Britrock88 swears they're legal, but things escalate from heated discussion to gunfire.

Finektr (sorry, man) is killed quickly when they transport outside of the cockpit and he has nowhere to go. We survive but take a beating. Our hull is down to four.

We receive 2 missiles (4), 1 drone part (7) and 22 scrap (25).

Berko takes over as our pilot.

Twelfth Beacon
The Long-Range Beacon!

Some guy offers to repair 20 damage for 40 scrap. SOLD.

We also upgrade our shields to level three.

Sector Three - Rebel Controlled Sector

I could have taken an easier route, but let's have some fun.

Crew – Grover (shields), britrock88 (weapons), Vincent (engines), Berko (pilot)

First Beacon
We land in an asteroid field with the ever-present Rebel auto-scout. We'll do this without missiles, the asteroids will help keep their shields down.

It's an asteroid that deals the final blow.

We receive 1 missile (5), 1 drone part (8) and 28 scrap (88).

Second Beacon
Another asteroid field, this time a slightly stronger auto-scout.

We survive and receive 1 fuel (10), 1 missile (4) and 33 scrap (121).

Third Beacon
We arrive at the location of a distress call and a civilian ship hails us, “Thanks for responding to our beacon. Our FTL navigation has gone haywire and we can't plot a course to the nearest depot to get it fixed. Could you lead us there?”

Yes.

We receive 18 scrap (139).

Fourth Beacon
We intervene to defend an outpost from the Rebel scum.

Victory is imminent and Grover is a master of shields.

We receive 2 fuel (9), 1 missile (5) and 22 scrap (161).

The outpost hails us and thanks us and gives us more of the good.

We receive 2 fuel (11) and 33 scrap (194)

Fifth Beacon
Another distress beacon. A ship asking for four fuel. We hand it off.

They update our maps with their sector scans. Now we know exactly what we may be heading into. Sort of.

Sixth Beacon
We fly into a nebula and meet an auto-scout protecting a small rebel space station. Let's get to it.

After destroying the ship, we salvage it for 26 scrap (220).

We check the space station and find a Drone: Defense Drone Mark I and 15 scrap (235).

Vincent is now a master of engines.

Seventh Beacon
A resupply station. Let's buy some goods.

We buy a drone system, including an Anti-Ship I drone.

We buy a couple of missiles and 3 fuel and move out with 81 scrap left.

We add two bars to Drone Control and buy a power bar for the reactor. 6 scrap remains.

Eighth Beacon
A Rebel ship is patrolling, spots us, you know the rest.

The ship goes boom before it can jump.

We receive 1 fuel (9), 1 missile (7) and 22 scrap (28).

Ninth Beacon
Our quest beacon for the ship we piloted here. Alas, we've come straight into a trap.

The excellent anti-ship drone is doing some great work for us.

We receive 2 missiles (10), 1 drone part (9) and 7 scrap (35)

Tenth Beacon
The Long-Range Beacon!

We strip a deactivated auto-scout of its information.

We also receive 1 missile (11), 1 drone part (10) and 19 scrap (54).

Sector Four – Rebel Controlled Sector

No options on that route.

Crew – Grover (master shields), britrock88 (master arms), Vincent (master shields), Berko (pilot)

First Beacon
We use our defense drone to help guide a small ship through an asteroid field. We're awesome. We take a wee bit of damage as we leave the field, but they offer us some military supplies as thanks.

We receive: drone parts -1 (9), scrap 28 (82), Weapon: Hermes Missile

Second Beacon
We stumble across a forward scout of the Rebel fleet.

Its FTL jump was imminent as the laser tore through the hull and ripped the Rebel ship in half.

We receive 2 missiles (10), 1 drone part (9) and 27 scrap (109).

Third Beacon
A black-market shop!

We buy 3 fuel (5), 2 missiles (13) and Scoops the Mantis (45).

We also add a power bar to the reactor.

Fourth Beacon
A Rebel ship hails us, insults us and fires up their weapons.

We have the last laugh and receive 1 fuel (5), 1 drone part (8) and 39 scrap (52).

Fifth Beacon
We meet a trader and purchase 6 fuel (10) for 12 scrap (40).

Sixth Beacon
There is a small planet nearby with scattered settlements. A small Rebel fleet is in orbit with many ships ferrying back and forth. It must be a more recently 'liberated' planet.

Seventh Beacon
Nothing here either.

Eighth Beacon
We begin to chase down a Rebel ship attacking a ship of Federation loyalists.

The Rebels are vanquished and from the wreckage we receive 2 missiles (12), 1 drone part (9) and 30 scrap (70).

The Federation ship is failing fast and we try to save the passengers. The majority don't make it, but the sole survivor offers to join our crew.

We receive 1 fuel (8), 1 drone part (10), 21 scrap (91) and Jose the Rockman.

We spend 85 scrap upgrading the weapons.

Ninth Beacon
Deep in the quiet of a nebula, we have been boarded.

In a true team effort, the invaders are repelled and no crew members are lost.

Tenth Beacon
Another nebula and the ship is running at half-capacity thanks to a plasma storm. A Rebel scout is waiting for us.

They send a drone aboard our ship, which Grover and britrock88 work to destroy. The rest of the crew helps destroy the opposing ship.

We receive 3 fuel (9), 1 drone part (11) and 38 scrap (44).

Eleventh Beacon
Another plasma storm, this time an auto-scout is on our butt.

It gets a couple of good hits in on us before we blow it apart.

We receive 2 fuel (10), 2 missiles (11) and 25 scrap (69).

Twelfth Beacon
The Long-Range Beacon!

We arrive to nothing but the beacon and notice a breach in one of our non-vital sectors. Jose, Grover and britrock88 quickly repair it.

And we jump on...

Sector Five – Rock Homeworlds

The other choice was Mantis controlled. Shops are rare in their space.

Crew – Grover (master shields x2), britrock88 (master arms), Vincent (master shields), Berko (master pilot), Scoops, Jose

First Beacon
A Rock ship flies past our windows and britrock88 recognizes the pirate insignia. He fires up the weapons and we're ready to go.

We win the battle, but they threw in a couple of massive missiles that tore through our cockpit and engine room.

We receive 1 fuel (8), 1 missile (11) and 33 scrap (102).

We spend 75 to upgrade our weapons once more. We can now use the Hermes Missile.

Second Beacon
We find a disabled rock transport floating near the beacon.

We strip the ship for everything we can get our paws on and receive 1 fuel (8), 1 drone part (11) and 37 scrap (64).

We upgrade our reactor.

Third Beacon
A ship without lifeforms within a nearby dense asteroid field is giving off a distress signal. We investigate.

We receive 23 scrap (57) and Weapon: Pike Beam.

We upgrade our reactor and sensor systems. Two scrap left.

Fourth Beacon
We jump near a sun and a Rock ship silhouetted against the exploding star.

Flares and missiles. Fires everywhere!

We receive 3 fuel (9), 1 missile (8) and 30 scrap (32)

Fifth Beacon
We're still working on damage control when we move to the next sector to avoid further flares. More pirates.

We pay more attention to fighting fires, but win the battle.

We receive 2 missiles (7), 1 drone part (12) and 36 scrap (68).

Sixth Beacon
Nothing here.

Seventh Beacon
We detonate a bomb, but our hull is below 25%.

We receive 22 scrap (90).

Eighth Beacon
A small trading post that doesn't serve our kind.

Ninth Beacon
A big beautiful trading post that does serve our kind.

It takes 75 scrap to fully repair the hull.

We spend a further 12 on 4 fuel (8). Well sell our system repair drone for 15 and buy 3 missile (10) with it.

We also sell our repair arm for 25 scrap.

Tenth Beacon
The Long-Range Beacon!

We intercept a pirate attacking some civilians and rip them to bits.

We receive 2 fuel (9), 1 drone part (13) and 49 scrap (74).

The ship we saved was badly damaged and most of the crew is dropped off at a nearby station. One wants to join our crew.

We welcome Junpeng the Zoltan on board the FOFC V!

Sector Six – Engi Homeworlds

We're progressing well so far... famous last words.

Crew – Grover (master shields x2), britrock88 (master arms), Vincent (master engines), Berko (master pilot x2), Scoops, Jose, Junpeng.

First Beacon
We sell 12 scrap (62) for 6 fuel (13).

Second Beacon
A very strong forward scout for the Rebels. They'll be on board shortly.

We take out the boarder, but they jump away, fearing for their lives.

Third Beacon
We secure a sweet cache.

We receive 47 scrap (109) and Drone: Defense Drone Mark I.

Fourth Beacon
A store.

We sell the Artemis, our secondary defense drone and the pike beam.

We buy a Burst Laser Mark II to complement our other.

We need to buy another bar for the weapons systems as soon as possible.

Fifth Beacon
Nothing but a beautiful Engi structure here.

Sixth Beacon
We ask a nearby station for aid and a friendly programmer gives us the schematics for a drone.

We receive 34 scrap (55) and Drone: Defense Drone Mark I.

Another one.

Seventh Beacon
Oh those dastardly pirates.

We tear it apart with just lasers and receive 3 fuel (15), 1 drone part (14) and 46 scrap (101).

Weapons upgraded.

Eighth Beacon
We refuse to take the bribe of a pirate attacking a badly damaged ship.

Vincent and Junpeng were lost trying to repair a breach.

We reach an agreement and receive 5 fuel (19), 5 missiles (17) and 32 scrap (43).

Ninth Beacon
We undergo some Zoltan research.

We receive 33 scrap (76) and some delicious cakes made from stiff dough.

Tenth Beacon
The Long-Range Beacon!

We also destroy a pirate and receive 1 fuel (18), 2 missiles (17) and 49 scrap (125).

Sector Seven – Uncharted Nebula

We'll have to navigate on instinct.

Crew – Grover (master shields x2), britrock88 (master arms x2), Berko (master pilot x2), Scoops (engines), Jose.

We add four power bars to the reactor.

First Beacon
A station offers to repair our hull for scrap, but we're in good shape.

Second Beacon
We jump into the middle of a plasma storm. Multiple recently incapacitated ships loom in the shadows, briefly illuminated by lightning.

We manage to find 65 scrap (95) and Drone: Anti-Ship Drone Mark I. Yes. Another.

Third Beacon
Nothing like attacking a Rebel ship in a nebula.

They damage our O2 system, but we prevail and move forward.

We receive 2 fuel (16), 1 missile (15) and 49 scrap (144).

We max out our reactor and have 4 scrap remaining.

Fourth Beacon
We can't tell without our sensors, but there may be intruders on the ship!

They decide to attack Grover in the med bay. Britrock88 and Jose quickly respond and they defeat the intruders.

Fifth Beacon
An auto-scout says “hello.”

We are able to dispatch it without using a single missile. Those will be vital very soon.

We receive 1 fuel (15), 1 drone part (16) and 44 scrap (48).

Sixth Beacon
Nothing here.

Seventh Beacon
Nothing here.

Eighth Beacon
A pirate arrives shortly after us, so we active our advanced weapons to indicate a threat.

They offer us 3 fuel (15) and 51 scrap (99). Smart move.

Ninth Beacon
