soccer rules interpretation
So you make the call:
Attacker A w/ ball is attacking and has beaten the last defender to create a 2 on 1 with the keeper. Attacker B is trailing A by 4 steps on their way to goal. Attacker A shoots at goal while B remains 2 steps behind. Keeper deflects the shot directly to Attacker B who tucks in the goal. Is attacker B offsides and the resulting goal be waived off? To me this was easy and I think the instructors today we're wrong in their teachings even when pressed.

I say "No."
You can't be offside if the ball is ahead of you when it is played. |

8 years of soccer officiating in my youth tell me that oykib's got it right. Don't know how they could explain it any other way. You cannot be offside when you are behind the ball when it's played...

He is not offside.
I am assuming this is USSF referee training? I just got my state badge.

It is, without any question whatsoever, not offside.
If the keeper's save was a pure deflection, the relevant point in time is when the shot was taken, where B was clearly behind the ball. No offside. Even if the keeper's save was deemed a "parry", there can be no offside because you cannot be put offside when the opposition plays the ball. Not even a close call. If they got this wrong they should be tremendously embarrassed.

it is and the trainer has been wrong so many times that we've lost credibility with him. The shame is that most of these kids in there are going grade 8 and dont know any better and you can see the confusion. We pressed him but this time the sitting in - CRT also fended the mistake. They always fall back on Law 18 (common sense) as their out.

Yep, what RPI said, player B was behind the ball when the shot was taken, no offsides.

well based on the looks everyone gives eachother in the room he's lost credibility with me and many of the young young kids.
Im the student, im not sure I have/need/deserve credibility from day 1. The teacher (usually) starts with credibility and then has to lose it.

How is common sense their out in this one? Common sense says, he was behind the ball and thus onside. IMHO Though I guess this question comes to mind, I know the hockey offside rule much better than the soccer one... If player B was offside on the original pass to player A, though player B was onside during that pass. What is the status of player B? My understanding is that his status only comes into play if it directly affects the play. How long does that status last? If player B was offside on the other side of the field while player A came forward with the pass from an onside position. Player B then continues forward, though behind the plane of player A and the ball but still beyond the defenders. Is he still considered offside and out of the play? Or would a play like that be flagged once player A took the pass since it led to a two on the keeper break, even if the one receiving th pass was not offside? |

Right. I was talking from a grammatical angle - not calling you out that you guys would not have credibility with this guy (who obviously doesn't know what he's doing). What I was saying is - your original quote was that everyone has lost credibility with him. That would imply HE no longer trusts YOU. But, it's the opposite - he's lost credibility with you. This was one of those - "let me point this out because I'm going loony here - have I been saying this wrong for the past 40 years" - kind of replies. You guys are in the right - you guys have the credibility. He's wrong, and he no longer has credibility with you, the rest of the coaches, the kids, etc. I'll now sheepishly walk out of the thread but ask - isn't there some league official one can complain to? Good grief - this is the guy's job and responsibility.

he kinda under his breath, just before we took the test, retouched on the topic but kinda said it in a way where he wanted to just reiterate the fact that you "cant be offsides, ever, if you're behind the ball" as if that was his stance all along.

I'll be a fartface and point out that it's also offside in American football.
