Outlook:Last season was good, but had to be considered a disappointment after acquiring a 2nd skill. However, there's every reason to think they're ready for a major breakthrough this season. They return all 5 starters and several backups from last year's squad. They also had by far the best FOFC recruiting class, with SG Phil Baum someone to watch. Because of this, they open the season as the #25 ranked team in the country.

Outlook: The Panthers improve all of their key players in last year's improved squad. That's the good sign. The bad is that they had a terrible recruiting season and only add Martinez, who does play solid defense, but not much else. My guess is a similar, maybe slightly better, result as last season.

Definitely a better start than last season and it's Merle Tibbets leading the way with a terrific beginning to the season (20.1 ppg). William Pace has returned in time for conference play.

Ducourouble continues to excel (17.8 ppg, 6.5 rpg) and Markus has filled in nicely for former star player Jones. The extra rebounding is evident immediately, but the Owls are only 7-6 because of their defense, which gives up 75.8 ppg.

Charleston Southern (7-5, 2-1), RPI: 40th

A team that may have finally turned the corner. Look no further than their massive upset win over then #7 Duke. The offense has been much better so far. If they continue this trend, they should roll through the conference, but a loss at the end of the month to Gardner Webb is concerning.

Hartford (14-15, 9-7), RPI: 128th

Merle Tibbets continue to play great and William Pace returns to his former self to lead Hartford to one of the best offenses in the nation at 77.8 ppg. Unfortunately, their defense is horrendous, giving up 80.5 ppg. This leads to very inconsistent and streaky play. They do manage two close games at the end of the month to secure an above .500 conference record for the first time.

The Owls rolled through conference play behind the efforts of Markus, Ducourouble, and Sims. Their only conference loss this season is a game where they took 20 more shots than their opponent, but just couldn't get them to go down. Again, a weak schedule means they will not make the NCAA tourney unless they get the automatic bid from the conference tourney.

I wish I had better news to report for the Vikings. Unfortunately, they took a step back this season and next season doesn't look much better. They'll lose 2 of their 3 best players and have no good young players to fill in, unless there's a randomly great recruiting class coming in.

However, the team that beat Duke finally starts showing up again and they finish the regular season with 9 wins in 11 games. Opening up as the #25 team in the country, Lamar hasn't quite played up to that potential, but they've had a solid season behind a deep bench. Adjusted for 30 minutes, they have 9 guys averaging double digit points. This shows promise for the future. Lamar is on the bubble for the tourney, but towards the bottom of the bubble, so will probably need an automatic bid to make the NCAA tourney.
