We are headed up there in a couple of weeks for a family vacation. I know that we've got a fair amount of Maryland/Virginia coast folks on here.

Any must-see or must-avoid attractions or other hints/tips?

Yeah, basically the ponies.

It's a nice area - Chincoteague is basically your standard fishing town sort of place, northward into MD's Assateague it's a State Park and mainly good for camping, fishing, and the like (no town to speak of). Edge northward and you get to Maryland's sole beach resort town Ocean City, which I'd describe as a lovable sewer.

And basically... you're doing it wrong. We Marylanders head down to the Carolina beaches to get our "good beach" time.

As nearly as I can tell, golfers go to Myrtle Beach, beachgoers go to the outer Banks or down toward Charleston. I'm really neither, just finger in the breeze perspective here.

Funny I just PMed Quiksand yesterday with a similar question about local Maryland beaches. We are staying in Alexandria for a mostly DC trip so those are a bit further out but the same idea. Kids first flight so won't have the wife's 10 bags with a bag of all water toys etc.

Thanks, guys.

We've done the beach already. We aren't thinking of it so much as a beach vacation as a ponies vacation. Mrs. A has wanted to see those horses since she was a kid. And so we'll look at some wildlife and some horses. Take a boat tour or two.

But I'll keep expectations reasonable :-)
