Philadelphia Herald, November 15th 1958 A's Owner Mack, Senators Griffith, Join Suit Against Major League Baseball A's owner Roy Mack, seeking to relocate his team to Oakland, and Senators Owner Calvin Griffith, joined today, the federal suit filed earlier in the year by Horace Stoneham and Walter O'Malley. 1959 Off Season C Earl Averill gets a nice raise in arbitration, it was to be expected and it's fine with me since we can sell him off to the Red Sox for $25K. We send 3B Andy Carey & RP Don Bessent, or as I like to call them, $16K of suck, to Chicago for RP Bob Davis. Monte Irvin resigns with us for about $17 grand less than he was making. We deal pitchers Warren Hacker and Ron Mroznski to the Browns for 4 players including a decent young reliever named Bill Smith. We clear out a bunch more of our shitty AAAA type pitchers for various parts. It's going to be another shitty season but things are looking up. We have a lot of good arms in the minors probably just a year away from contributing and while the offensive side doesn't have the quantity of prospects, there are a couple of solid pieces coming. Our staff remains pretty much the same, only youngster Jim Bailey is new. Our new closer, Bill Smith looks decent but the rest of our pen is just a menagerie of shit. Our lineup remains fairly unchanged save for the departure of our best power hitter. That's a scary thought. |

Washington Post, March 23rd, 1959 Baseball, Owners Reach Landmark Agreement Major League Baseball came to an agreement today with the four owners who have filed a suit in federal court attempting to keep the league from blocking their planned relocation. Under the agreement, The Washington Senators and Philadelphia A's will, starting in 1961, play their games in Oakland and Baltimore respectively. The move was precipitated by an agreement with Los Angeles business man Gene Autry to buy an expansion franchise in LA, set to begin play in 1961. Baseball would not agree to the move unless A second team could be placed on the west coast. The league also granted a second expansion franchise for the 1961 season to the city of Minnesota. In a more contentious agreement, the league has agreed to allow the Dodgers and Giants to move west beginning in the 1962 season. The agreement comes only after New York businessman George Weiss agreed to buy an expansion franchise in the city, with the caveat that the team be allowed to pick 3 players from each of the Giants and Dodgers, at the end of the 1961 season. 1959 Season We went 18-35 through the first two months of the year. In early June we added rookie lefties Jim O'Toole & Bob Hartman to our rotation. In the amateur draft we passed over slugger Boog Powell and took C Tim McCarver 1st overall. On July 1st we're 28-53. Hank Aaron is hitting over .300 but the power is not there yet. Joe McClain is having another really good year. O'Toole is doing nicely but Hartman is struggling some. Bud Black and Troy Herriage both have ERA's in the low 4's. In the middle of July Monte Irvin tore his knee. That may be the end for him. Damn. But once he goes down it's time to start a new era. We call up a cavalcade of rookies. 2B Julian Javier, 1B Willie McCovey, 3B Brooks Robinson and LF Don Clendonon are summoned to the big squad. 2B Roy McMillan is sent to the Browns for 4 mid level prospects. 3B Bubba Phillips is shipped to the Red Sox. A this point in the season we're 33-59. We end the year 56-98, in last place, 30 games behind the Dodgers who won the league by a game over the Cubs and Giants. They'll meet the Tigers in the world series. The Tigers went 94-60 and won the AL by 5 games over the White Sox. Some good and some bad to take away from this season. Firstly, the crop of young pitchers I was so excited about does not seem to be as good as I was expecting, and that's a real problem, because I've learned that no matter how good your offense is, you need pitching. McClains 2.56 ERA is 4th best in baseball but he can't carry us on his own. Our rotation is average at best and our pen is in shambles. On the other hand we've now got a real solid core of offensive players that we can build around. 1959 World Series In a Fall Classic for the ages, the Dodgers from 3 games to 1 down to defeat the Tigers in 7 games. Led by 3B Gino Cimoli, 1B Mole Fenton & LF George Shuba and backed on the mound by ace Johnny Podres, the Dodgers brought a title to Brooklyn in it's 3rd to last season in town. The Tigers were led by slugger Chuck Hinton who hit 45 homers and 1B Dave Roberts who hit .329 on the season. |

1960 Off Season Monte Irvin retired at the age of 40. So I think that's the last of the original 13. In a couple years I'm gonna take a break and do capsules on all 13 players on the 20th anniversary of their debuts. Bud Black and Troy Herriage are in the final years of their deals and they both want raises. They can fellate themselves. We sign SS Luis Aparicio to a 5 year extension. We make a few minor trades of minor leaguers to clear some salary. Other than that no major moves. Black and Herriage will come off the books next year which will save us over $50K. Mickey Lolich is going to spend the year at AAA but he's on track to start next year in the rotation with McClain, hard to believe he's still only 26. Our lineup is young but untested, it remains to be seen how they develop but I'm hopeful. Our rotation should be better, and our pen should even be a little better. I'm hoping for about 70 wins. 1960 Season Well, a 5-20 April sure set me straight. Our lineup is not hitting and our pitching is a hurling turd. May wasn't much better. Hank Aaron is hitting a stout .188 and Aparacio is clobbering it at a .193 clip. McClain is doing his best but O'Toole & Hartman are both horrid, as are Black & Herriage. Our pitching is atrocious. We take Fergie Jenkins with the 1st overall pick and put him right into the starting rotation. We call up Mickey Lolich and 19 year old Cecil Perkins. We move Hartman & O'Toole to the bullpen. I'm tired of messing around here. On July 1st we're 23-56. We go 15-10 in July, our first winning month in what seems like forever. Lolich is struggling but Jenkins has pitched real nicely. Our pen is sort of stabilized. Julian Javier is having an amazing season, he's hitting .344 from the lead off spot and McCovey leads us with 24 homers. Hank Aaron is meh. We finish the season at 59-95, 35 games behind the Giants who'll play the White Sox in the world series. The White Sox edged out the Senators by a game to win the AL while the Giants won the NL by 7 games over the Pirates. Fergie Jenkins was tremendous, winning 11 games with a 2.65 ERA. Sadly the rest of our starters didn't show as much promise. Lolich had an ERA over 5 and McClains was 4.09. McCovey blossomed as the season went on and posted a .286/39/87 line. His 39 dingers were good for 4th in baseball. Clendonon and Robinson also had solid rookie season while Aaron rebounded in the 2nd half to put up a .251/15/79 line, but his days as our #3 hitter are done. Javier was brilliant at 2B, he collected 203 hits, good for 2nd in all of baseball. I'm optimistic going forward, but I've been optimistic before and optimism has stuck it's finger up my butt so I'm tempering my hopes going forward. 1961 Off Season Black & Herriage are gone as is Bob Conley. Aaron gets a nice bump in arbitration then we lock him up for 6 years at a decent price. O'Toole & Bill Smith also get long term deals just because I can't afford to rebuild my entire pitching staff again. Gale Wade, our starting CF for the past five years wants starter money when he's on the downside a career that was never that great to begin with so we ship him off to Washington for a minor league pitcher. We seriously need some bullpen help so we make trades for 22 year old Ron Taylor from Cleveland, 23 year old Jim Lehew from the Yankees and 21 year old Ted Davidson from Cincinnati. We traded away a bunch of decent guys to make these deals but I can't pussyfoot around anymore. What's the point in stocking a system if you aren't gonna use it to your advantage. We also add starter Jack Kralick from Washington, he'll go into our rotation and O'Toole will go to our pen. The Washington Senators have moved to Baltimore and been rebranded as the Orioles & the A's have moved to Oakland. The Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Angels have joined the AL as expansion franchises. In the expansion draft we lost C Bob Oldis, SP Jim O'Toole, RP Marshall Renfro & LF Jimmy Stewart. Only O'Toole bums me out. Vada Pinson will start the season in CF, pretty much completing the ascension of all our best hitting prospects. Our lineup should be better with a year of maturity under it's belt. But our staff is where I'm really hanging my hat. I think we're 5 strong with a real solid young bullpen and a few live arms in the minors yet. I've gone through a lot of crappy seasons to get here but I really think this team can contend. |

1961 Season April- We go 16-9, 1.5 games behind Brooklyn. Pinson, McCovey and Aaron are all struggling but Javier is crushing it. Our pitching has been lights out. Hopefully the O & the P can hook up. May- We struggle a little in May, going .500 and ending the month 31-24 but still just 1.5 games behind Brooklyn. Pinson still isn't getting on enough at the top of the order but McCovey has 15 jacks and Robinson is hitting .330 while Javier is hitting .354. The starting staff scuffled some, only McClain has an ERA under 3 and Jack Kralick has an ERA over 5 now. I'm not panicking though. June- We have a really strong month and are 48-33 and on top of the NL by a game over the Dodgers. Pinson is coming around slowly, Javier, McCovey and Robinson are tearing the cover off of the ball. Hank Aaron can suckle me. Our pitching has not been great but it's been good, and with the way we're hitting, that's ok for now. We take SP Tommy John with the 2nd overall pick in the draft, passing on 2B Joe Morgan. The Indians offered us 21 year old SP Carl Bouldin for 19 year old SP prospect Sterling Slaughter. We do the deal as it helps our staff right away. We put Boldin right into middle relief but we'll move him to the starting rotation if Kralick continues to struggle. July- Ugghh, we ended July by losing 8 in a row. We're still 60-46 and tied for first but we need to right the ship. Brooks Robinson missed a couple of weeks with a broken finger. Our numbers haven't dipped, just hit a rough stretch. In fact Vada Pinson is now 5th in the league in hits, can't take a walk to save his life though. Got two months to go to get this pennant. August- Welp. Closer Jim Lehew broke his ankle early in August and will miss most of the month. Jack Kralick is not getting any better so we call up our top SP prospect Tony Cloninger. At the end of August we're 75-60 and 7 games out. Doesn't look like this is our year. September- We lost Joe McClain for a couple of weeks but we were out of it by then anyway. We finish 86-68, in 3rd place, 9 games behind the Dodgers. Willie McCovey jacked 44 homers, 2nd in the league to Harmon Killebrews 50. Julian Javiers 221 hits led the league and Vada Pinsons 189 and Don Clendonons 182 both put them in the top 10. McCovey & Robinson were 3-4 in the league in RBI with 112 & 109. In the end it was our starters. They were good, but none of them took the bull by the horns and really turned into an ace. But they're still young and this was a nice step forward. The top of our bullpen meanwhile was fantastic. Lehew, Smith and Taylor all pitched extremely well. The Dodgers will meet the 114 win White Sox, who won the AL by 6 games over the 108 win Orioles, in the world series. |

So Jack Kralick, he of the 4.98 ERA, wants a raise of about $70,000. He must be insane. He's gone.RP Ron Taylor is in the last year of his contract and wants major bank, about $50K a season, that's just insane. I contemplated trading him but I'd rather get another year out of him and let him walk than trade him for .50 cents on the dollar. Next year is gonna be break the bank time though as Clendonon, Javier, Robinson & McCovey all hit arbitration. Yikes. It's pretty much a quiet off season for us as we just have to hope our young pitchers get even better next year. The Dodgers have moved to LA and the Giants to San Fransisco. Expansion teams in NY and SD have arrived. In the expansion draft we lost Morrie Stevens, a very good SP prospect, C Chuck Lindstrom, RP Bob Thorpe & SS Lee Elia. Only Stevens bothers me, hate losing a prospect so close to being ready. We enter the season with a very strong, young, starting staff of Jenkins, Lolich, McClain, Perkins & Cloninger. Our pen is just as good at the top but we lack depth. Almost all our pitching prospects are a year or more away. Tommy John is looming in A ball but we can give him time to develop. Buck Rodgers is the only addition to our lineup as he takes over at Catcher. Our two top prospects, OF Johnny Callison & C Tim McCarver, start the year at AA. I believe that with a year under their belt, this young team can make that leap and win the pennant. Let's see, shall we? |

1962 Season April- 18-8, 2 games up on San Fransisco. McCovey & Clendonon struggling but Pinson, Javier & Robinson crushing it. Jenkins & Cloninger scuffling some but the staff is excellent otherwise. May- 35-19, 4 games up on the Giants. McClain had a mild shoulder issue, missed two weeks. Lolich & Perkins have been great. Cloninger struggling. McCovey had a great May. June- 50-31, 1.5 Games up on Pirates & Cubs. July- We end the month 67-40, 6 games up on the Cubs & Pirates. Hank Aaron tweaked his knee and missed most of July. We also lost closer Jim Lehew for 2 weeks with a shoulder issue. McCovey has 33 homers, 1 behind Roy Sievers for the MLB lead. August- 89-46, 10 games up. September- We finished the year 104-58, 9 games ahead of the 2nd place Pirates. McCovey missed a couple weeks. Tony Cloninger hurt his hamstring and is done for the year, Tommy John took a turn in the rotation. We'll play a powerhouse Yankees team that won the AL with a 114-48 record. Poor Baltimore won more than 100 games for the 2nd year in a row but has nothing to show for it other than two 2nd place finishes. McCovey missed out on the homer crown by one, his 48 shots coming in 2nd to Roy Sievers 49. Pinson with 223 and Javier with 216 finished 2nd and 3rd in hits to Maury Wills and his 232. Brooks Robinson was 8th with 192. Pinsons 146 runs led the league and Javier was 7th with 116. McCoveys 121 RBI were good for 6th. Joe McClains 2.79 ERA was good for 9th. We'll face the Yankees in the world series, they feature a starting five all with ERA's below 3. Phil Niekro, Luis Tiant & Phil Ortega all won at least 20 games. The heart of their order features Sluggers 1B Bill White, LF Don Dillard, and our old pal 3B Willie Jones. They are a beast, but we're a beast too baby. 1962 World Series Game 1 saw Mickey Lolich match up with Phil Niekro and the Yankees wasted time in staking their claim as baseballs best team. Don Dillards 2 run single and Frank Whites 2 run homer put them up 4-0 after the first inning and they never looked back. Lolich didn't get out of the sixth inning and backed by 2 homers and 6 RBI for White, the Yankees steamrolled to a 8-1 win. We scored first in game two on a McCovey RBI double in the top of the first off of Luis Tiant, but once again the Yankees came out swinging. A Willie Jones bases loaded double in the bottom of the first staked them to a 3-1 lead against Joe McClain. We pulled to within a run in the seventh when Aaron singled in Robinson and it stayed that way till the ninth. With two outs in the top of the ninth and Aaron on 2nd, Pinson singled him home to tie the game. It went to the 10th when with two outs and nobody on, Corky Withrow doubled and Bob Addis singled to center field to score the winning run and put the Yankees up 2-0 in the series. Game 3 in Philly was pretty much do or die for the Phils and Fergie Jenkins was up to the task. He out dueled Phil Ortega, tossing a complete game gem in a 2-1 win in which a Don Clendonon sixth inning RBI double was the difference. Game 4 saw us bring out the thunder against Yankee starter Juan Pizarro. McCovey smacked two homers and drove in 5 while Cecil Perkins hurled our 2nd straight complete game and we tied the series at two games a piece. Game 5 was a masterpiece all around as Mickey Lolich rebounded from game ones debacle and toss a complete game, 5 hit shutout. We knocked around Phil Niekro to the tune of 6 runs in seven innings and took a 3-2 series lead with a 7-0 win. Robinson and Aaron each homered and combined for 5 RBI. The series returned to Yankee Stadium for a game six match up between Joe McClain and Luis Tiant. Corky Withrow broke up a scoreless game in the bottom of the third with a 2 run single to give the Yankees a lead they would never relinquish. Tiants only mistake was a McCovey home run and up 3-1 in the eighth the Yanks broke it open on RBI hits by White, Jones & Lollar as New York won it 6-1 and forced a game seven match up between Fergie Jenkins and Phil Ortega......... Game seven was all about Fergie Jenkins. The 19 year old stymied Yankees bats, tossing a complete game, 1 run gem. The only mistake being a Jerry Lumpe homer in the sixth inning. RBI hits by Clendonon & Aaron, and run scoring ground out by Robinson in the ninth inning were more than enough as the Phillies took game seven and the 1962 world series with a 3-1 win. Jenkins posted 18 innings of one run ball in winning both his series starts. Brooks Robinson collected 10 hits while Willie McCovey connected for 3 homers and 8 RBI in the series. 1963 Off Season Welp, we had to break the bank. McCovey, 7 years at $235K. Javier, 7 years at $122K. Robinson, 7 year at $40K, which is a steal. With just those deals alone we push over our budget for next season. Ron Taylor gets $78K but that's pretty much so we can retain his rights and trade him. Clendonon gets $90K in arbitration & Lehew gets $50K. As far over budget goes it's clear we're going to have to move some people. We move Lehew to Minnesota for a nice 4 player package, the cornerstone of which is 24 year old left fielder Manny Mota. We then ship Clendonon to the Angels in exchange for good reliever Doug Gallagher and a prospect. We ship Taylor to the Giants for reliever Don Brady, who isn't nearly as good but is making a lot less and is tied up for 3 seasons. That pretty much wraps up our off season. The pen is weaker, but not weak and we should still be fine. We lost Clendonon but I think Mota will do just fine. Other than that we're the same team, just with another years maturity under our belt. We should be fine. Next year though we're gonna have to figure out a way to pay Lollich & Jenkins and that will probably mean letting McClain & Perkins walk. We're hitting well but Jenkins, Perkins & Cloninger all have ERA's over 4 and one of our top relievers, Carl Bouldin has been atrocious. June- We right the ship in June and finished 50-32 but still 2 games behind the Dodgers. This is clearly going to be a race. The hitting has been amazing this year. McCovey has 25 jacks. McCarver is hitting .391, Javier is hitting .346. Lolich, McClain & Jenkins have been pitching lights out but Clininger is still struggling. To that end we call up Tommy John and send Cloninger to the bullpen. Don Sutton went 1st in the amateur draft to the Mets, Rod Carew went 2nd to the Twins and Jim Palmer went 3rd to the Angels. July- Not a fun July. Cecil Perkins needed to miss 3 weeks with an achiles injury so we called up our 2nd best SP prospect Ray Culp and he struggled mightily. Tommy John has struggled too. Vada Pinson missed a couple of weeks with a knee strain. All of this contributed to us ending July 65-42 and 7 games behind the Dodgers. August- A huge August surged us to a 87-49 record, half a game behind the Dodgers. The Pitching has really been good. Time for a pennant chase. September- We took over 1st for a bit, but on September 15th we're 1 game out with two weeks to go. Vada Pinson tweaked his hamstring right around this time and will miss the final weeks, damnit. Jesus. We won 9 in a row, the Dodgers won 11 in a row. Entering the last 4 games of the season we're 2 games back. We stayed alive till the 2nd to last day of the season. We finish the year 107-55 and 2 games behind the NL champ Dodgers. Crikey. The Dodgers will meet the White Sox, who at 105-57, edged out the Yankees by a game for the AL pennant. Javiers 128 runs tied him for 1st in baseball with Maury Wills, his 205 hits were good for 4th. McCoveys 120 runs and Pinsons 113 put them both in the top 10 while Brooks Robinsons 195 hits were good for 8th. White Sox slugger Roman Meijas broke Babe Ruths single season home run record by clobbering 63. McCovey was 3rd with 53 and 2nd in RBI with 132. Lolich at 2.64 and Jenkins at 2.75 placed 9th & 10th in ERA and Lolich tied for the league lead with 23 wins while Jenkins finished one behind at 22. 1963 World Series The Dodgers, led by LF Rocky Calavito and ace Johnny Podres, took on a White Sox team with a brutalizing offense. Richie Ashburn & Maury Wills at the top of the order scoring 239 runs combined, and a middle of the order consisting of Roman Mejias, Roy Sievers and Frank Robinson that hit 63, 37 & 38 home runs. It's a murderers row. The White Sox took the first game as Ralph Mauriello bested Johnny Podres in a 2-1 Chicago win. Jerry Davie would return the favor in game two as he blanked the Sox in a 2-0 win to tie the series up as it headed back to LA. The White Sox would pound out 14 runs in games three and four, winning by scores of 7-1 & 7-5, putting the Dodgers on the brink. Davie would best Ralph Terry for a 2nd time in the series as the Dodgers would win game five 6-2 to send it back to LA. Down 2-0 in the fifth inning of game 6, Dodgers first baseman Fenton Mole would crack a 2 run homer to tie it, then in the sixth, LA starter Ray Herbert would connect for an RBI single to give the Dodgers a lead they would not relinquish as they held on for a 3-2 win to force a seventh game. Right Fielder Gino Cimoli was the hero for the boys in blue in game seven as he went 4-5 and drove in 4 runs. Behind Bill Harris, the Dodgers rolled to a 10-2 over the White Sox and claimed the world title as they proved the age old adage that good pitching beats good pitching, it even beats great hitting. |

1964 Off Season Vada Pinson gets $85K in arbitration, Lolich gets $220K & Jenkins gets $190K, sweet mercy. We release Joe McClain after 8 seasons with the club. Didn't want to do it but we can't afford to pay him anywhere near what he wants. SP Cecil Perkins also had to go. RP Carl Bouldin got a nice bump in arbitration though I can't for the life of me figure out why. Lolich agrees to a 7 year deal worth $190K per season. Fergie Jenkins agrees to a 7 year deal at $150K per season. So this saves us a lot of money but we are still way over budget. We move RP Bill Smith, C Cam Carreon & SS Dick Barone to the Dodgers for a middling 2B prospect just to save the $36K in salary. The Red Sox offer us $123K for Carl Bouldin and we take it without letting our buttholes blink. We don't want to move Vada Pinson but we have so much money tied up in our offense already that we entertain offers, and they are good offers. In the end the Indians package that includes 23 year old 3B Ron Santo, 24 year old LF Carl Yastrzemski and 19 year old 1B Gomer Hodge is too good to pass up. The Boston Braves have moved to Atlanta and the St. Louis Browns have moved to Kansas City and have been renamed the Royals. We enter the season a fairly unknown quantity. I know Lolich & Jenkins are stud, and that our 3-5 starts should be good, but they are untested. Our pen should be sharp as we've converted a couple starters and I think they'll do a good job. Our lineup should still be strong but losing Pinson will hurt us. We'll move Javier back to the top of the order, bat Brooks Robinson 3rd and rely more on a maturing Hank Aaron. Manny Mota will patrol CF while Yaz and Lou Johnson platoon in LF. Thing about this team is, after a few years of making a nice profit, we're way over budget now. 1964 Season April- Not a brilliant start to the year as we go 15-12 and stand 4.5 games behind the Giants in 5th place. Lolich had a bad month and 5th starter Ray Culp has been dismal, just as he was in his short stint last year. Jenkins & Cloninger have been awesome. I think they'll work it out. The bottom of the lineup, McCarver, Mota & Aparicio have been pretty stinky but the rest of the boys are hitting well. No need to panic just yet. May- We had a really good May despite losing closer Fred Talbot for a couple of weeks with a broken foot. Culp is coming around but Lolich can't get his head out of his ass, he has a 5.30 ERA. Jenkins, Cloninger & John are carry the team right now. McCovey has 19 homers and Robinson is hitting a robust .350. June- We went 15-12 in June and stand at 49-32, 3.5 games behind the Pirates in 4th place. The lower half of our lineup is not hitting as I'd hoped. They aren't awful, well McCaver is. Culp has slowly righted himself but Lolich looks lost out there, glad I payed him a whores ransom. Rollie Fingers went 1st overall in the amateur draft to Kansas City. The Cardinals took Reggie Jackson 3rd. July- We had a good July, but we got swept by the 1st place Pirates in a big series that really hurt us. We're 65-42 and 7 games out of 1st in 4th place. August- Holy macaroons, we go 25-3 in August and storm past the Pirates to take a 4 game lead in the NL. Our record is 90-45. Lolich ERA has come down a full run from it's high point though Culp has regressed some. McCovey leads the league in homers with 39, he's actually tied with our old buddy Jim Greengrass. Cloninger has 22 wins to lead baseball and he and Jenkins are 2-3 in ERA at 2.31 and 2.34 respectively. Like the mother said to her daughter, please don't blow it. September- Wizzily winks! We finish the year 109-53 and win the pennant by 5 games over the Dodgers, the Pirates faded all the way to 12 games out. We'll meet the White Sox in the world series as they repeated as AL champs by going 111-51 to beat the Yankees by 6 games for the pennant. McCovey finished 3rd in homers with 42 and 6th in RBI with 112. Brooks Robinson rewarded us for giving him the three hole by leading baseball with 227 hits, Julian Javier was 4th with 213 and he led the league in runs with 132. McCovey & Robinson also placed in the top 10 in runs. On the mound, Cloninger with 23, Jenkins with 22 and John with 21 finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th in wins while Jenkins 2.33 ERA was good for 2nd in baseball, Cloningers 2.45 was good for 4th and Johns 2.84 was good for 8th. It should be a classic world series as the White Sox have a ridiculous offense, but so do we. And I dare say our pitching is pretty clearly better. Still, it's going to a fun fall classic. |

1964 World Series Game 1 in Chicago was a tightly contested, back and forth affair. We jumped ahead in the first on a Manny Mota RBI triple but they answered off of Fergie Jenkins for two runs in the bottom of the frame on RBI singles by Roman Mejias & Frank Robinson. A Brooks Robinson RBI groundout in the fifth and a Fergie Jenkins RBI double in the sixth would put us ahead, but only temporarily, as a Pedro Gonzalez pinch hit single in the bottom of the sixth would tie the game back up. In the 8th our bullpen let us down as Church and Nyman combined to allow the go ahead run to score and they would take game one by a 4-3 score. Game 2 saw Tommy John face Ralph Mauriello and down 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the Sox exploded for five runs, three of which came on a Ken Boyer home run. Boyer would finish the game with 4 RBI and our offense missed out on two bases loaded opportunities as the White Sox rolled to a 7-3 win and 2-0 series lead. Game 3, back in Philly, was a big ball of suck. We got what we needed from Cloninger, as he went 7 strong innings and left with a 3-2 lead. Our bullpen proceeded to blow it, blow it hard. Don Brady loaded the bases before being lifted for Ron Locke, whose whole damn job is to get lefties out, and he promptly allowed singles to Vic Roznovsky & Pete Runnels, allowing 3 runs and putting them up 5-3. We got a run in the bottom of the inning but could score no more, as the White Sox took game three 5-4 and put us on the brink. Turds. I had no intentions of starting Lolich in this series but down 3-0 I might as well give him a shot and if he pulls it out my top 3 pitchers are all completely rested. Game 4 was no cakewalk but we did manage to stave off elimination thanks in part to Hank Aarons two home runs and 3 runs scored. Lolich was nothing special, in fact he left down 4-2 but we managed single runs in the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th innings and 2 in the eighth to pull away and secure a 7-4 win to keep us alive one more day. We truly righted the ship in game five as Jenkins tossed eight innings of one run ball and we pounded out 16 hits en route to a 9-1 rout. Mota & Robinson each had 4 hits as we knocked them from pillar to post. The odds don't seem so insurmountable now, just need to win two games in Chicago, come on boys. Manny Mota badly bruised his hip and is out. Hank Aaron will take over CF. Game six was a true classic. Ralph Mauriello and Tommy John dueled for 7 scoreless innings, in fact Mauriello took a no hitter into the eighth. Lou Johnson led off with a double to break up the no hitter but with 1 out was thrown out at home on an Aparicio grounder to short. Aparicio then stole second and Tommy John turned on the heroics by blooping a single to right to score a run. We would add a run in the ninth and John would wrap it up, tossing a complete game, 5 hit shutout to force a game seven. Brooks Robinson tweaked his knee and wont be able to go tomorrow so Ron Santo will take over at 3rd. I'm so excited. Well, ya can't win em all, where would you keep the trophies? The White Sox bested us in game seven using the long ball. Cloninger faced off with Ralph Terry and they broke up a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third on RBI hits by Ashburn and Mejias. McCovey would answer with a homer in the fourth to make 2-1 and then Lou Johnson would homer in the fifth to give us a 3-2 lead. Mejias would homer in the sixth to tie it and Jay Porter would homer in the seventh to give them a lead they would never hand back. In the eighth Don Bradey would allow a homer to Roy Sievers and they would add another run to take a 6-3 lead, the score they would win by to claim the title. I'm disappointed, not just because we lost but it just seemed like we were always a step behind them offensively and on the mound. Oh well, there's always next year. |

I plan on taking a little break and work on capsules for the 13 and try and output the Encyclopedia. But I've also become somewhat addicted to this particular dynasty so I may pick it up again in twenty minutes, who can say.
