Does this qualify as severe weather?

https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/22/us/as...rnd/index.html

Quote:
NASA says there are three potential impacts, but "based on 21 observations spanning 12.968 days," the agency has determined the asteroid probably -- phew! -- won't have a deep impact, let alone bring Armageddon.

Ha-ha. You got in a funny. I mean, a dated 20 year old asteroid movie funny, but, still a funny.

I guess there's nothing to worry abou...

Quote:
The chance of it hitting us is just 0.41%, data show.

Wait? What?!? I mean like about 1/2 of 1%? Like I roll 3 dice and get snake eyes and all life on earth goes poof? That seems bad.

Well, we escaped Marco. It's looking like the possibility of a direct hit from Laura as a major hurricane is very much in play, though.

I would like to return this box of 2020. It's defective and I just don't want it.

I think you missed this part:

Quote:
"Asteroid 2018VP1 is very small, approximately 6.5 feet, and poses no threat to Earth. If it were to enter our planet's atmosphere, it would disintegrate due to its extremely small size," NASA said in a statement.

I'm not sure if anyone here lives in the target area, but if you're in the path of Laura, take care. She's a Cat-4 now.

Midday yesterday, a direct hit up Galveston Bay was still in play as both the Euro and UKMet had it going that way. Fortunately, the GFS was more correct with its track and it's going to be really close to where they've had it for a few days now.

We boarded up our downstairs but not our difficult to reach upstairs. We're relieved it's probably all just a drill.

Starting to hear weather folks say it might edge up to a Cat 5 by landfall. Luckily it's fairly sparsely populated in western LA, but they're alling for hurricane force winds all the way up to Shreveport.

I mean, are we just going to look back in, say, 15 years and watching something and say "That's never happened before. Well, except in 2020. But that doesn't count."

Seeing some pictures from West Linn friends on facebook they are scary. I have a friend in Medford who had to make a mad dash to evacuate.

Bonney Lake, the north end of Puyallup, and Sumner have all been evacuated. So the cities around us have been evacuated and the highway running north from of us is closed. Tuesday night the smoke was so bad in our house it was difficult to breath and a friend of ours 2 streets down lost electricity.

We should be fine. It's supposed to rain for 3 straight days starting Monday and there's no conceivable way it's reaching us before then. It would have go through a major city center to get to our house.

My drive to and from work sucks right now because of the highway closures and I just got a text that smoke from Oregon, California, and Washington fires will all be converging on Western Washington tonight.

Hope you guys are ok. Experienced a wild fire a couple years ago and that's scary stuff, even more so when it's your home ... (I was on vacation)

It's far worse south of here (Vancouver/Portland area), but this is what a filter we put in yesterday morning looks like after roughly 30 hours. Our AQI has been around 200 for 3 days now and isn't expected to clear up until Wednesday.

Harvey has really desensitized us to rain (and also created a collective PTSD, as well, but that's another story for another day).

Harris County Flood Warning System

Beta has dropped more than 10" of rain in the last 24 hours around where I live and I'm just like /shrug/

For context, during Harvey, most of the Houston area had between 30-40" inches of rain with bullseyes between 50-65"(!!) and there were, I believe, 6 counties that didn't have a single spot with less than 20" of rain.

We have a snowfall warning here, accompanied by a wind warning, which will push wind chills down towards -20 C (~0F). Going to be an interesting weekend. At least I don't have to commute back from the office. Also another year of the leaves freezing into the ground before I can mulch them. One of our trees is still mostly green.

This is our first quasi-cool day of the year. Our high today was 77 at midnight. It's in the mid 50s, rainy and windy. I like this sort of weather (in the small doses we get it) as it's the first time in months I've felt a "chill" (yes, I realize it's still only 55).

Heaviest snow fall and cold temperatures in 40+ years expected here. The weather pundits proclaim that it's part of global warming to have colder winters as well. Let's see what happens in the next 7 days. At least with this semi-lockdown, there's little reason to go out the door anyway.

I'm just glad I got my normal share of groceries for about a week stocked up before the panic hoarding started.

Supposed to get another round of snow here on the east coast.

Not sure where to put this but here is as good as any. Wife got a call Monday night. Her cousins husband was snow blowing and suffered a heart attack and died. He was 42. Leaves behind a wife and 4 kids.

Be careful out there fellas.

A couple local meteorologists were talking about the potential craziness of the 10 day forecast for next weekend here in Myrtle Beach. He said

"I can pretty much guarantee no hurricanes, volcanic eruptions and maybe mudslides next week. Anything else is pretty much on the table." So yes maybe snow

We've been pushing into the -40's with windchill. Makes it fun taking the kid to activities with things reopening... Although it's hard to complain because while it has been a cool winter, there hasn't been much below 0 F.

Early next week, we're looking at potentially the coldest it's been in years here in Houston. It's nothing compared to anywhere else but we're also not built for long freezes here (outdoor pipes, giant overpasses, etc).

It was cold in Atlanta last week and week-end. It's 66 now and Thu is going to hit high in the 60s also, wonderful weather. But then back to 30-40s after that with rain.

I was watching Caribbean house hunters show on Hulu yesterday. It would be great to live in the US Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico (wife's not that interested though).

My son went back to college today. They have 20-30 inches on the ground right now. Just up the road from them it is 40-50 inches. The long term forcast shows the next time they peak above freezing is in two weeks. I doubt he has ever had more than two back to back days below freezing in his whole life.

Well, it's hovering around 30 here which has resulted in us being in an ice storm warning. Looking at anywhere from .25 to .75 inches of ice, plus some sleet/snow. Hoping we don't lose power and/or trees.

Easy for those of us in Houston get to look down our noses at everyone north of here this time of year. But we get to pay for it in the summer for 6+ months of 90+ degree heat or we're getting blown away or drowned by hurricanes.

Gosh, we had 5 inches of snow on Sunday and after that 7 cold days without any more snowfall. Was that what all the fuss was about?

Oh I know about the humidity. I did a full project in Houston suburbs in early 2010's. The client wanted coat and tie. They were in a building that didn't have a great cafeteria so had to go outside for sushi and Mexican. It was miserable.

Houston is horrible. I took Caitlin to a softball camp in The Woodlands in mid-July and when she left she said she never wanted to play another game in Texas for the rest of her career. She couldn't grip the ball she was sweating so much.

We got close to a half-inch of ice but no major issues other than staying off the road. Our lawn is literally encased in ice and our dogs refuse to walk on it (except to eat the grass popsicles). Can't get either of them to go to the bathroom which culminated in one of them running around the house whizzing everywhere. Fun times.

During the 20 inch snow storm a week or so ago our dog went out looked up into the snow and ran right back into the house.
