Viva Las Vegas! (Chained and Restrained)
Well, about time for a new thread from me, isn't it? I've decided to start house rules in the middle of a career, though I know it's not popular. When I first arrived with the Powers (Austin at the time) I decided to trade everybody away for draft picks, so I could do it empty cupboard-ish, well, here's how I've fared so far in this career.
The house rules are pretty simple: No renogotiating unless the player volunteers a cap cut before the FA Period. Only offering 3 contracts in the first 10 weeks of FA Period, other than your own guys. Only offer trades with guys unhappy with playing time. I let the scout fill in the roster and stuff. And finally, all requests are take it or leave it by FAs. You can add more, but no less. And this is an FOF 2 career. |

So I have some players to keep. Decent cap situation. My three chasees in FA are 2 mediocre RBs and a young superstar LB. None of my players were went after in Week 1, but I have to beef up the offers to get these guys. Then I see how blind I was, one of my RBs that I went after was signed, but Ralph Plotz had a beefy offer. He has 99 loyalty, so I hope I can get him back. I get the stud LB Donnie Gantry to a 105.98/4 yr. deal. Plotz signed with me on a 103.98/4 yr. deal. Suddenly all I have is 65 mil left, plus my Franchise Player. I went after Eric Galloway in Week 9, but he didn't seem to be happy with something as he wouldn't except my four year deal at all, despite it being more than his offer from New York. So I offered him a 3 year deal. I went after Fadler in Week 10. Once Week 11 opened I could do anything. I looked to fill my needs- I went after a cheap RB with not much future, but to fill a spot, and went after a solid TE, S, and G. I would try to get my third WR spot met by going after a veteren WR. My LB got in the spirit and decided to completely ignore my offer, despite it being more than my opponents, because it wasn't the level he wanted? Ridiculous. I got Eric Galloway back, along with Louis Sinclair at S, better than Ellard was, and Harold Stephens, a G who is no Briggs, but should fill in quite well with his youth in week 12. Then I got that TE in Week 13. He'll be great, despite weak run blocking. I spent 90 million dollars in FA, that's quite enough for me. I get some key wholes filled at least. I went 7-9 last year so get pick #16, and I doubt I'll get that needed RB there. Instead I expect to go for a DT with that first pick, unless somehow a good RB is available, but I doubt it.
So, here's my roster going into the season.
Very strong, the best roster in the league. However, cohesions in the 60s and 70s (but that's the point of the challenge, give me a great roster and cohesion and it's super bowl, but with these rules I won't get too high cohesion). I'm baffled that Griffith is not rated the top QB in football, but instead a former #1 pick castaway from my 2040 season, Levon Nelson from Carolina, is. I disagree, especially after his severe injury he had with me (which is why I dealed him). But whatever, it's time to kill now. My team would play ugly games all year. So, here we go.
Not happy with my team overall. However, last time we were in the playoffs, we were the #6 seed but turned it on and played perfect games in the playoffs before getting beat by the Rams, who played an even more perfect game that day. So maybe we will get lucky in these playoffs. Stat leaders- QB Al Griffith: 614-333-54.2%-3911-6.36-25-16-76.5, now completely healthy. Not the MVP campaign we expected. QB Al Griffith: 93-517-5.5-2. RB Cole Weaver: 134-448-3.3-2. WR Omar Carnation: 86-1098-6 in 16 starts. WR Eric Galloway: 68-965-6 in 15 starts. WR Grant Montgomery: 71-944-9 in 1 start. TE Dana Duncan: 46-495-2. K Bryce Weinmeister was 30-40 in FGs and 34-36 in EP, but despite being a bad Kicker attributely, he won a lot of games for me single-handedly. S Louie Sinclair: 86 tackles, 1 sack, 4 INTs. DE Ralph Plotz: 44 tackles, 16.5 sacks CB Alvin Glasgow: 64 tackles, 0.5 sacks, 5 INTs, 2 TD. My first playoff game is against my former team- defending Champs San Antonio. Their prolific offense was great this year even with the injury to 4 time MVP QB Pat Fuller. Their backup filled in nicely. A little one-dimensional though (because I was there ). I'd need my offense to fill their potential (which we know they have, they just don't always play to it) and much more to dethrown these guys. Well, I got it. 42-17! Griffith threw for 291 yards, 3 TDs, and 1 pick while running for 74. My D was the key here. I got 3 turnovers and held their rushing game to (get this) 11 carries for 22 yards! However, I lost my top dogg LB, so will be very weak there. I play Arizona now. Yikes. They beat me at home, but now I hope to return the favor. They have a great redzone QB who threw for 28 TDs with just 8 picks and a 98.3 rating. They have my Vegas castoff Allen Carr at RB. Their key is D. I hope to expose it with Al Griffith, who threw for 462 yards in a playoff game in my last run. But in their face! 24-21 in a commanding victory! 320 yards, 3 TDs, NO PICKS from Griffith. So I go to Carolina for the NFC Title game, could we get to the super bowl like this? The league's worst rushing game and 2nd-best passing game, and extremely mediocre D? We'll see. This will be my second NFC Title game with them. I still remember that OT thriller @ St. Louis in 2046 where they beat me in OT off an 82 yard TD with their backup QB. I wouldn't lose this though, I'm determined! Or maybe not. Griffith got hurt vs. the Cards and will play 2nd string QB Stan Harper, who has a career rating of 71.4, but this year his rating was 103.8 on 46 attempts. He better prove himself, as he's likely to get traded next year, and I want a lot for him. Oh God look at their QB. Levon Nelson, my castoff who I criticized at the begginning of the year. He had a 98.7 rating this year with 25 TDs and 9 picks. Luckily they have a banged up running game and are starting a questionable 12 year vet. So let's see if we can get me to my first bowl in 43 years! I jumped up early and was up 24-0 at the end of the third Q. They began to Ram it though. However, after two TDs and two two pointers, we recovered the onside kick with 42 seconds left! Ball game! We're going to the big one! Stan Harper was starter quality out there with 258 yards and 3 TDs, but just a 5.4 AVG. The capper was that 2nd round steal Rice who broke a 65 yarder, and I'm facing San Dogg in the big one! Their young star QB of the future was hurt coming in, so they went with the 37 year old 17 year vet as their starter. They have a solid ground attack though. It'll be a battle of the backup QBs. What a way to start a threat it would be if I could win it. The best part is I actually host the game! However, they be 2 point faves. This should be a great one. It was a defensive struggle early, and no one scored till they got a FG on the last play of the first half! They added another FG in the third. 6-0 going into a great 4th Q. We get a FG on our first drive and close the gap to three. But then they begin to pull away on a 49 yard TD run. 13-3. But we're not done yet. Harper hits Galloway for a 39 yard TD with 4:39 left and we're down just 13-10. However, they drive down, and we need to hold them to a FG. No such luck. Milkovitz hits Jeffries for an 11 yard TD and we're down and done 20-10. A great 4th Q, but they win in the end. Harper was not bad, 22-41, 233 yards, 1 TD, but 1 INT and 1 Fumble won't help his case to be traded next year. But still a great job of getting to the super bowl by my guys. The way we won ugly and just didn't play championship-type football convinced me we wouldn't go far in the playoffs, but I was wrong. Al Griffith, surprisingly, won MVP. I guess when you lead your team so far and they lose you so can't win the Super Bowl has something to do with it? Glasgow was 1st team CB, Carnation was 2nd team WR (really stepped up with four 100 yard games in the playoffs), and Plotz was 2nd team DE. But we fall short of the title, just barely. |

Salary Cap: $404.1 million Room Under Cap: $56,310,000 A hurt is gonna be the low room under cap. My big run stopping DT Omar Conley retired, luckily I drafted Griese in the second round last year, turned out to be a great move, but I still want a current starter. In FA I go after 5th year WR Troy McCoy, 5th year RB Patrick Strickland, and vet DT Zedalis. I got McCoy on a 2 yr./33.63 mil deal. I got Corwin Geffen, a decent guy who may start, with a 3 yr./31.07 mil deal in week 12. I also got halfway-decent LB Donny Koehke on a 2 yr./24.28 mil. deal. So ends the FA period, not as effective as last year, and I may have to make some cuts to get under the cap. But we'll see how things go in the draft. A strong roster has its two wholes at RB and DT, but has decent youngters there too. I'm not in large need anywhere. There are two great DTs, but only two worth taking with a 1st round pick, and weak RBs, but we'll see what I get dealt. Amateur Draft Report: My roster going into the regular season:
97 roster rating would be tops if I had a TE, I wish I would have kept my old guy, even if he is just a pass-catcher. He's just as good a blocker as these guys are. Not better, but about equal with Bailey on blocking and an excellent target. But oh welll. Cohesion is 80-78-65-69. Obviously it doesn't seem my QB will need to attempt 600 balls this year. Over 500, but not 600, probably. I'll let you know of any trades to change the roster, but this is it for now. I'm sad the Packers move to McAllen, Texas, because I actually live up here near GB, but it will create a regional rivalry with some great history between us now. And it's just a game. Even though the original rivalry was Austin-Green Bay, Vegas-McAllen should be even better. My fan support is now in the 30's, a good sign. I might not move them when my lease is up. Obviously my RB is gonna get a lot more carries this year, but I don't see him getting enough to reach 1000. I traded Stan Harper for Frisco's 1-5 picks next year, and he'll start there and G Skip Machado to Dallas for their 2nd pick next year, so they aren't on the roster this year. So here we go:
My offense did OK averaging 24 points per game, but I expect more than that. My D was the third best though in football, helping me to a franchise history-best 13-3 (they never made the playoffs before I arrived). Stat leaders QB Al Griffith: 561-324-57.7-3910-6.96-28-16-83.9. Sacked just 33 times, third least in football. Considering the other two QBs had less than 400 attempts, that's a remarkable job by my OL. He also ran for 446 yards and 3 TDs and a 5.0 AVG. His 28 TDs led the league. RB Cole Weaver: 218-996-4. The -5 yards he had on opening day kept him from reaching 1000 yards. WR Troy McCoy: 63-1041-7. Turned out to be a great offseason pickup. Montgomery led the team with 8 TDs. LB Donnie Gantry: 93-2.0-2. Leads the team in tackles, turned out to be a great offseason acquisition. DE Ralph Plotz: 37-10.0. Tied with his rookie year for lowest sacks, but still leads the team. S Phil Footman: 84-2.0-6. After just 2 picks last year, he returned to rookie form as a first round pick with 6 INTs this year. It feels good to go 13-3, but we have to win in the playoffs. Once again the Bowl is are goal, but I want to win it this year. Well our first one is against division rival Chicago. Rico Fisher is their QB, he was my #1 pick in 2039 before I traded him, not thinking he was my guy for the future. Well now he's developed into a great QB. They have a solid RB as well. But talent-wise, we have both advantages. I beat them in Chicago, but when we met here in Vegas, they beat me 27-21. So we'll see how things turn out. I start McCoy and Carnation at WR as Montgomery is questionable with a broken nose. It will be tough, but we can beat them. They opened up with a FG, but we were up 17-10 at halftime. They got another FG in the third to make it 17-13. Griffith and Carnation hooked up for the third time today to make it 24-13 in the fourth. A FG put it in the back 27-13. They scored with 3 seconds left, but too little too late, 27-20 victory. A more perfect game could not have been played. 17 carries for 99 yards by Weaver. Griffith was 20 of 28 for 3 TDs on 220 yards and no picks. Carnation tore apart the secondary in his first start of the year with 6 catches and 95 yards, but the killer is 3 TDs. Footman picked off 2 passes and returned them 50 yards. For the 2nd straight year we'd play Levon Nelson and Carolina in the NFC Championship. Last year's OPOY was listed as probable, but would still start for them. He had 3655 yards, 22 TDs, and 13 INTs for an 86.0 QB Rating, below his career average of 87.3. I reccomend against having a 34 year old RB, but he still averaged 4.9 YPC for them this year on 1325 yards. Their weakspot is the D which gave up 361 points this year. I beat them in Carolina in Week 12, and would hope for another victory today. Surprisingly scoreless after the first, but we were driving. But Griffith was picked at their 6 and it was returned 94 yards for a TD! We drove the ball down again on our next drive, and this time gave it to Weaver for a 5 yard TD to make it 7 up. Later in the 2nd Phil Footman came up big in the playoffs again with a 78 yard INT return! He's been sensational in the postseason this year. So we're up 14-7. Then we open up the third quarter with a 62 yard TD pass from Griffith to McCoy and we're up 21-7, but it's not over yet. Nelson gets a TD pass 8 minutes later and we're just up 21-14. But before the third was over, Griffith hit Carnation for a 4-yard TD and we were back up 28-14. They got a FG to open up the fourth 28-17, but two FGS from us later and we're up 34-17, and win it 34-24. Weaver ran for 136 yards on 18 carries with 1 TD. Griffith was just 50% passing with 268 yards, but had a solid 8.9 AVG with 2 TDs, but 2 picks. Troy McCoy had 5 catches for 131 yards and 1 TD. We won it and returned to our second straight super bowl! We would play Denver, one of the 2 D's who were better than us. They have a 38 year old QB in his 15th season starting, and he struggled with 13/16 TD/INT ratio and a 75.8 rating this year. Their starting RB is hurt so they're going with undrafted rookie Levon Footman who averaged 5.5 yards per carry this year. They have 2 good WRs about the same as ours only a little better (74 rating to 72 for us), but even if their offense seems week, they have an incredible D. They gave up just 256 points this year, and 18 in 2 playoff games. They allow just 88.1 yard per game rushing, league-best, and are #6 with 202.9 passing yards per game against them. My D is well above average, but not nearly this good. We'd like to get some turnovers off of them, as we are #3 with 34 takeaways, and I think we'll need that to overcome their D with ours, as takeaways are our strength. I'm 4 point favorites over the AFC's top seed. I opened up with a 9 yard TD pass from Al Griffith to Carnation. They got a safety in the 2nd, and it was 7-2 at halftime. It was the defensive battle advertised. Cole Weaver caught a 3 yard TD from Griffith in the third, and it was 14-2 after 3. What a score. Early in the fourth Griffith ran in a 7 yard TD. It was 21-2, but not over. It didn't even take them 2 minutes to score on a TD pass and get the two pointer. Next time they had the ball they scored and got the two pointer again, and suddenly we're up just 21-18 with 5:50 left. However, Nothing the rest of the way for them, and we win our first ever Super Bowl! Cole Weaver touched the ball 18 times for 118 total yards today, being our top rusher and pass-catcher, and 1 TD. Griffith was 19/29 for 181 yards, 2 TDs, and no picks. He also had 46 yards and 1 TD on the ground. Carnation had 6 grabs for 82 yards and 1 TD. But the key was what I predicted (before I simmed the game I may add ), turnovers. Glasgow had 1 pick, and a FA next year Corwin Herndon was named MVP with 2 picks and 69 yards returning. So he's the Super Bowl MVP. I did two key things in this one: Used my strength, forcing turnovers, to force them into 3 INTs; and shoved their strength back in their face, averaging 6.2 yards per carry with 125 yards. Sure they outgained me and controlled the clock, but we used what we used all year- turnovers. None for us, 3 for them, and we are the Champions! I see at the end of the year we're a 100 roster rating, with the closest being 77. Al Griffith won his 2nd OPOY in three years, and 3rd of his career, along with his 4th 1st team QB nomination. Corwin Herndon, of course, was League Championship MVP. The three differences this year were pretty simple: Al Griffith healthy for the championship games, a solid rushing game, a great D. |

WR Eric Galloway and CB Cary Connell both retire, which will hurt.
So a few guys I'd love to keep with just 27 people signed plus the Franchise player. The three people I go after are two solid TEs and a great DT. In Week 8 I got TE Tony Hazeltine on a 2 yr./23.58 mil. deal. I'm surprised I can't get too many people despite back-to-back super bowl appearances. In week 10 I resigned Neal Levens to a 2 yr./18.14 mil. deal. In Week 11 I got Omar Carnation back with a 3 yr./32.69 mil. deal and Ty Humphries with a 2 yr./35.53 mil deal. Carnation was a steal at a low price. In Week 12 I got C Mack Cooper at a 6.22/2 yr. deal, a great run blocker, P Wesley Disney to a 8.90/2 yr. deal, just for the name, CB Gerald Mahovlich on a 1.95 mil./1 yr. deal, to fill a gap, and Reggie Young back on a 42.65 mil./3 yr. deal. Going into the draft I'd like a T, but I'm not sure I'll find a good one. Amateur Draft Report: Rnd 1 - Russell Priester, T, Memphis -Decent tackle with potential in the 50s and 60s. Rnd 1 - Mike Todd, CB, Purdue -Very good pass defense prospect. This was a need with the loss of Glasgow. Rnd 2 - Kelvin Logan, FB, Georgia Tech -Possible future starter. Rnd 2 - Rob Zeppelin, G, North Carolina -Potential in the 50's. Possible future starter. Rnd 2 - Paul Owens, DT, Wisconsin -Should be potential starter. Rnd 3 - Brett Abrams, RB, Alabama -Didn't make the cut. Rnd 3 - Frankie Duffy, WR, North Carolina -Should be OK 4th guy. Rnd 4 - Jamal Poles, WR, Oregon State -Didn't make the cut. Rnd 4 - Kent Donovan, K, Notre Dame -Should be a good kicker. Rnd 5 - Les Marsh, LB, Baylor -Should be good run-stopper. Rnd 5 - Charles Saleh, CB, Illinois -Good current guy already, strength at run-stopping. Rnd 6 - Danny Syms, LB, Boston College -Worst LB on my roster, but still there. Rnd 7 - Howard Palmer, QB, Auburn -Didn't make the cut.
We are tied for tops with Carolina with a 100 rating. Cohesion is 80-74-70-55. The OL is definitely a week spot, after giving up just 30 sacks last year, they're weak this year. My secondary is decimated. Sammy Hoffman is lost till the playoffs, and Phil Footman, the leader of my D, is lost till late next year! I sure hope he doesn't retire. Alterations will take place to the roster during the regular season obviously, but this is it for now. I haven't yet signed a replacement safety. I'll really need my offense to come up big this year. I lost my top corner and safety, plus a would-be starting CB, so we're decimated vs. the pass. It'll definitely be rough.

Set a record with 38 TDs on the year, but sacked 60 times! Most since sacked 73 in 2046, but that year he threw 673 times! I guess we know what I'll improve in the offseason, don't we? He had 531 rushing yards and a 5.9 AVG. RB Cole Weaver: 209-966-4.6-5. Continues to put up respectable numbers despite us passing all the time. WR Tony McCoy: 71-989-13.9-12 in 5 starts. Led the league in TDs. WR Omar Carnation: 54-882-16.3-9 in 15 starts. TE Tony Hazeltine: 53-648-12.2. WR Grant Montgomery: 41-634-15.4-6 in 12 starts. S Corwin Geffen: 90-1.0-6. 2 TDs on INTs. DE Ralph Plotz: 27-18.0. Highest sack total since 2044 when he had 25.5. Al Griffith won MVP and 1st team QB. Corwin Geffen was 2nd team S. It's pretty obvious the D was a problem this year, but even bigger was the OL, which I definitely need to improve in the offseason. Hopefully Footman doesn't retire in the offseason, so my D will be fine. |

My worst fear came true as S Phil Footman retired. That's a killer to my D.
The second worst cap situation in football, but I have 35 people on my roster so 84.5 should be enough millions. I go to my weak spots: S and OL. I go after a great C and T, along with a very good S. He's no Footman, but one of the best out there nonetheless. I get S Alonzo Cochrane to a 3 yr./44.39 mil. deal. I get back DE Kirk Chandler with a 3. yr./30.02 deal. I also signed fill-in RB Tyrell O'Neill to a 1 yr./1.98 mil. deal. I trade #2 DT to Cincinatti for a great FB and the 25th pick in the 2nd round. I wouldn't have thunk of it except he's demanding a trade and the 3-4 will probably rule my team again this year. I'm looking to go for a G or T in the draft of course. I forgot to save the Draft Summary, so this is about it: T Carl Goodwin: 42/97: Great first round pick. 100 future in run blocking should be great. G Geoff Brockermeyer: 30/76: 2nd rounder. Could be potential starter on weak line. LB Frankie James: 34/59: OK backup LB in 2nd round. TE Drew Woolford: 33/48: 2nd or 3rd quality TE in 3rd round.
My weekness is still the OL, but not as severely as last year, and I have some great young talents. Cohesion is 82-71-81-55. My D should be better than last year, and with a roster rating of 97, we should be contenders again this year.
Looking at the 397 points for and 297 against, we have on paper the best offense and defense in the division. But is that enough? Nope. That's baffling, but these guys just weren't good enough to win. 8-8 again. But, I say as long as we have Griffith, we have a shot. But my team seems to take everything for granted. A great playoff team, winning 75% of the time, but getting their has been our problem. Stat leaders: QB Al Griffith: 560-307-54.8%-4005-7.15-26-13-83.3. Sacked 59 times this yaer, down from last year. Led the team with 85-504-5.9-4 rushing. RB Cole Weaver: 129-424-3.3-4 on 12 starts. RB Bennie Rice: 86-284-3.3-2 on 4 starts. WR Troy McCoy: 66-964-14.6-4 in 15 starts. WR Omar Carnation: 57-896-15.7-6 in 14 starts. WR Grant Montgomery: 60-866-14.4-5 in 3 starts. TE Troy Hazeltine: 46-507-11.0-3. LB Reggie Young: 85-2.0-1. DE Ralph Plotz: 32-13.0. CB Mike Todd: 33-4. 1 TD. Al Griffith won MVP. There is no apparent problem whatsoever. My rushing game is well below average, though my offense is way above average overall. My rushing D is a bit below average, but my D is overall above average. We're just +3 in turnovers, but that's still above average. Can't find a problem other than just the w/l column. But there's next year... |

I rename the team the Gamblers, while McAllen announces they don't have any current plans to rename the Packers. Front Office Football from Solecismic Software Some guys I'd like to keep, we'll see. I got a vet WR, Frankie Allen, and should start this year unless this is his falloff year. 34.13 mil./2 yrs. I resigned T Brandon Buckley to a 4 yr./102.66 mil. deal. I signed G Rickey Shula to a 3 yr./14.94 mil. deal, a real steal. Come Week 12 I resigned Corwin Geffen to a 1 yr./4.62 mil. deal. In Week 14 I signed RB Kenyon Crockett to a 4 yr./35.04 mil. deal, and C Corwin Mercier to a 1 yr./3.23 mil. deal. Mercier may start at C. My OL problem seems to be healed, as I may have 1 VG G, 1 EX G, 2 EX T, and a VG C this year. It doesn't take long to draft an all-pro line. So WR is my main concern, but with the 18th pick, I don't think I'll get a superstar. Amateur Draft Report:
I traded DT Gerald Abbey to San Antonio for their 3rd round pick next year. My roster rating is 87, fifth best in football. Cohesion is 91-74-86-59. We need to return to being contenders this year again after two years of mediocrity lately.
We should have made the playoffs, but again we can't withstand a tough division. Very disappointing. Stat Leaders QB Al Griffith: 324/547, 59.2%, 3882 yards, 7.09 AVG, 27 TDs, 22 INTs, 80.6 rating. Also had 400+ yards, but just not enough. A poor season in my mind for him. But there's always next year. Levens having a 49.4 rating, still 11% better than his %, did not help at all with 108 attempts. RB Cole Weaver: 209 attempts, 802 yards, 3.8 AVG, 4 TDs. WR Troy McCoy: 82 catches, 1173 yards, 14.3 AVG, 5 TDs. WR Omar Carnation: 83 catches, 1151 yards, 13.8 AVG, 6 TDs in 6 starts. WR Frankie Allen: 51 catches, 772 yards, 7 TDs in 10 starts. LB Donnie Gantry: 90 tackles, 1 sack. DE Ralph Plotz: 39 tackles, 16.5 sacks. CB Mike Todd: 46 tackles, 0.5 sacks, 4 INTs. CB Sam Hoffman: 32 tackles, 4 INTs in 6 starts. Omar Carnation was 1st team WR. Troy McCoy was 2nd team. A disappointing season definitely. We had a chance too, with two 8-8 teams making it, but our team just dropped the ball. Very disappointing campaign. I set up the talent and they don't drive through. |
