Comets head west

MOLINE -- The Chicago Comets of the Front Office Offseason League (FOOL) announced today they would move west to Moline, Illinois to become the Quad City Thunderstorms.

After nearly a decade of futility and obscurity in the Windy City, the team had sagging profits at the game and a lack of morale. Most were indifferent to whether the team stayed or left.

"Man, I forgot about that team ages ago," said one unidentified fan.

New ownership group led by six-time FOOL Classic finalist and 2-time FOOL Classic winning GM Dark Cloud, decided that in the end, the team needed a place that would appreciate the franchise and rally around it. "We thought long and hard about staying in Chicago. But we're only three hours away right now, so we're still regionally part of the midwest. In anything, we're broadening our reach and we're capturing the small-town ethos of a team scrapping it out amongst big city franchises that dominate the league," said Cloud, who also serves as GM and looks to become the first General Manager to lead three teams to the league title matchup.

"It's not easy to get there once, much less doing it multiple times. But...I think we'll be able to get there. That's why we play the game in the first place," he said.

The new team will be known as the Quad City Thunderstorms. Cloud said the idea came to him after he was woken up by a summer thunderstorm in the Midwest.

"Everyone can relate to these, anywhere. But especially midwesterners. Plus, unlike lightning or tornadoes, thunderstorms don't go out and kill people. They just put the fear of God in 'em. That's precisely what we want to do to our opponents with our bats and with the ball hitting the catcher's mitt."

The T-Storms will play at John Deere Field, a 30,009 seat facility being built with a view of the Centennial Bridge connecting Illinois with Iowa and the Mississippi River.

"It's a great place to live and to play. We're excited about what's next. We'll have a long, long tradition to establish in FOOL. I'm certain of it," said the former St. Louis GM. "It makes sense that I'd come back to the midwest and just go up the river, after a few years out west. This is where I belong."

And for the fans of the new T-Storms, they hope that titles will follow.

FOOL Franchise Movement

With Chicago, one of the original franchises moving, I wanted to chronicle the team histories in the league of where teams have been and who they were and are now. Those who haven't been here, FOOL moved to the FOFC boards in 1964, hence the movement that happened that season.

True. But there is no historical record of this. Just old fading memories.

Sorta like what Bud Selig did to the Seattle Pilots.
