Fritz Maisel Named NL Rookie of Month
Sunday, June 1st, 1913: Fritz Maisel is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest National League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In May the Cincinnati hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .306 average with 38 hits, 1 home run and 13 RBIs.

To date, Maisel has collected 79 hits for a .326 average. He has posted 1 home run, scored 51 runs and driven in 23 runs.
Harris Selected AL's #1 Newcomer
Sunday, June 1st, 1913: Joe Harris's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young New York first baseman has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In May he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .435 with 13 doubles, no triples and 2 home runs. Harris also scored 32 times and drove in 20 runs.

This year Harris is batting .399 with 3 home runs.
Mullin Top NL Starter in May
Sunday, June 1st, 1913: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, George Mullin still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 32-year-old starter for Boston was named National League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 5 wins and 1 loss with 25 strikeouts in his 7 starts, putting up a fine 3.45 ERA in 57.1 innings of work.

So far this year Mullin has a 7-4 record with a 4.22 ERA.

FOOL-H News: The All-Star Game Rosters Have Been Announced
Thursday, July 3rd, 1913: How would you like to manage a team with more star players than you can play? It wouldn't be an easy chore. Collins 5-7 for Boston
Wednesday, July 2nd, 1913: Eddie Collins did more than his part as Boston trimmed Brooklyn today at Ebbets Field. The Beaneaters second baseman pounded out 5 hits to pace his team to a 17-8 thumping of the Royal Giants.

E. Collins singled in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th, flied out in the 8th and grounded out in the 9th.

So far this season Collins is batting .344 with 2 home runs.
Maisel Named June's #1 Newcomer
Tuesday, July 1st, 1913: Youngster Fritz Maisel emerged as the latest National League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Cincinnati deserved the honor, batting .405 with no home runs and 10 RBI. Is the month of June a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Maisel enjoy the limelight.

In 1913 Maisel has hit at a .352 clip with 126 hits, 1 home run, 33 RBIs and has scored 69 times.

Babe Ruth has 23 HRs so far this year, which makes me think Dutch Zwilling's record of 28 might be falling short of a catastrophic failure before the end of the year.

And here I thought we'd see Babe Ruth the hurler in this iteration of baseball. I guess we'll never know..

Rookie Wiz Gets July Award in NL
Friday, August 1st, 1913: Bobby Veach of the Boston Beaneaters nabbed the Rookie of the Month honors for July in the National League.

Posting a .347 average last month, he collected 33 hits, 1 home run, 20 RBIs and 15 runs scored.

In the 1913 season Veach is hitting .304 with 3 home runs.
Ruth Named Newcomer of the Month
Friday, August 1st, 1913: Boston's Babe Ruth collected 35 hits to snare the American League Rookie of the Month for July.

He batted .398 with 13 home runs, 38 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

The 18-year-old is barely old enough to shave, but he could definitely contend for Rookie of the Year if he keeps up this pace.

So far this season Ruth has gotten 143 hits in 398 at-bats for a .359 batting average with 35 home runs. His stats include 116 RBIs and 93 runs scored. He has played in 106 games.
Redlegs Starter Wins NL Pitching Award
Friday, August 1st, 1913: Jim St. Vrain's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 5-2 in July, the 30-year-old Cincinnati hurler has been named National League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 22 in 58 innings, logged an ERA of 3.10 and allowed opponents to hit .269 against him.

His record this season is 13-8 in 30 starts and St. Vrain has a 4.79 ERA.

Cincinnati Third Baseman Best Rookie
Monday, September 1st, 1913: Fritz Maisel of the Cincinnati Redlegs captured the Rookie of the Month honors for August in the National League.

Posting a .279 average last month, he collected 34 hits, 2 home runs, 15 RBIs and 14 runs scored.

Maisel's current batting average stands at .315 and he has chalked up 3 home runs and 56 RBIs.
Harris Wins August's Rookie Award
Monday, September 1st, 1913: The top-rated American League rookie in August was New York's first baseman Joe Harris.

Last month he played in 29 games and hit .398 with 12 doubles, 1 triple, and 1 home run. Harris also scored 21 times and drove in 22 runs.

Currently Harris is batting .358 with 5 home runs, 87 RBIs and 102 runs scored.
Moore Earns August's Best Pitcher Honor
Monday, September 1st, 1913: As Earl Moore hoisted up the National League Pitcher of the Month trophy for August, rumors have already begun to swirl about whether he will leave Cincinnati once his contract is up at the end of the season.

Moore put pressure on the Redlegs to keep him around by posting a 7-0 record and an ERA of 3.26 over 58 innings last month. He also rolled up 23 strikeouts, increasing his value both to Cincinnati and to every other team in the league.

In 36 starts this season, Moore has recorded 21 wins and absorbed 11 losses. He has pitched 279 innings, allowed 275 hits, struck out 114 and has a 4.13 ERA.

Monday, September 15th, 1913: The National League has made it official -- Ty Cobb is this week's winner of the Player of the Week Award.

The New York center fielder was sensational with a .615 batting average, 1 home run and 8 RBIs. Cobb also had 2 walks and posted a .643 on-base percentage.

This season Cobb has hit at a .438 clip and produced 129 RBI, 12 home runs and 152 runs.
Great Week for Boston's Babe Ruth
Monday, September 15th, 1913: The American League made it official today: Babe Ruth is the Player of the Week.

He really glistened on the diamond this week with a .519 average to take home the honor. The Boston left fielder went 14-27, drove in 8 runs, scored 5 times and hit 3 home runs.

This year Ruth has batted at a .357 pace with 199 hits, 48 home runs, 161 RBIs and scored 127 times.
Moore Blanks Cubs
Sunday, September 14th, 1913: "Good pitching beats good hitting" is an old baseball adage.

Well, good pitching also beats bad batting.

In his postgame interview the Chicago manager said, "Earl Moore made us look real bad today. He was outstanding. He was down in the zone with all his pitches. Everything was sinking."

Moore had 4 strikeouts, 2 walks and allowed only 4 hits as the Cincinnati Redlegs whitewashed the Chicago Cubs 3-0.

Harry Lord Wins NL Trophy
Monday, September 22nd, 1913: It was announced today that St. Louis third baseman Harry Lord snagged the National League Player of the Week Award for his outstanding play last week.

He posted a .529 batting average as he collected 18 hits, 4 home runs and 12 RBIs.

For the season Lord is batting .391 with 267 hits and 6 home runs. He has scored 143 times and batted in 102.
Red-Hot Rampage Reaps AL Reward
Monday, September 22nd, 1913: Detroit Tigers first baseman Fred Luderus rose above the controversy surrounding his soon-to-expire contract, thriving under pressure last week and copping the Player of the Week award in the American League.

Luderus put up a .545 batting average (12-22) with 1 home run, 5 RBIs and scored 6 times.

Thus far in 1913 Luderus is hitting .386 with 12 home runs, 136 RBIs, 121 runs scored and has compiled a .442 OBP.
Washington Helpless Against Dineen
Sunday, September 21st, 1913: In a very sharp performance at Shibe Park Bill Dineen of the Philadelphia Athletics blanked the Washington Senators 4-0. He permitted 4 hits and finished with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk in the Athletics victory.

This year Dineen has compiled a 13-21 record with a 4.37 ERA in 38 starts.

Tigers Star Earns AL Bat Title
Tuesday, September 30th, 1913: The top hitter in the American League this season was Fred Luderus of the Detroit Tigers. Nobody was better with the bat. Luderus compiled a .382 batting average (245-642) to surpass everybody for the 1913 title. In addition, his stats included 47 doubles, 8 triples and 12 home runs. This year's bat champion played in 162 games, scored 122 runs and drove in 139.
Over the Top, Jackson Bats .411
Tuesday, September 30th, 1913: Joe Jackson of New York has joined a mere handful of men to hit over .400 for a single season. The 24-year-old Giants left fielder hit .411 in a colossal year at the plate, rapping out 275 hits, 60 doubles, 12 triples and 14 home runs. Baseball's latest member of the elite .400 club also drove in 176 runs and scored 141.

"As much as I could, I tried to just forget about hitting .400 and just focus on each at-bat and trying to help my club," Jackson told BNN. "But as you guys know, there is no way to quietly hit .400."
Giants Cobb Bats .439 in AL
Tuesday, September 30th, 1913: Add the name Ty Cobb to the list of baseball players to hit .400 or better in a single season. The New York center fielder joined that elite group by hitting a jaw-dropping .439 this year.

"To be mentioned among baseball's immortals," said Cobb, "is beyond my wildest dreams."

Cobb's 310 hits included 49 doubles, 7 triples and 12 home runs. He also scored 165 runs and batted in 139.

Tale of two seasons for the Whales and Beaneaters, among other things that were kind of odd this season. The Whales started as a house afire, and faded into oblivion (an oblivion fade that I recognize well from my own renditions of it), and the Beaneaters went from a consistent but unspectacularly good early season, to bursting out of the logjam atop the NL and being near the FOOL-H all time season win record.

Is there a season win total record anywwhere? I couldn't find one, and checked manually, and believe I still hold the FOOL-H and (obviously) Americal League single season win record, while the Beaneaters just tied themselves for the NL mark.

Huh.. weird in the web reports, that page is blank. There is supposed to be one though.

The Whales started as a house afire, and faded into oblivion (an oblivion fade that I recognize well from my own renditions of it), and the Beaneaters went from a consistent but unspectacularly good early season, to bursting out of the logjam atop the NL and being near the FOOL-H all time season win record. Young Drachma Dark Cloud Join Date: Apr 2001	Fritz Maisel Named NL Rookie of Month Sunday, June 1st, 1913: Fritz Maisel is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest National League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers. In May the Cincinnati hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .306 average with 38 hits, 1 home run and 13 RBIs. To date, Maisel has collected 79 hits for a .326 average. He has posted 1 home run, scored 51 runs and driven in 23 runs. Harris Selected AL's #1 Newcomer Sunday, June 1st, 1913: Joe Harris's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young New York first baseman has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month. In May he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award. During the month he hit .435 with 13 doubles, no triples and 2 home runs. Harris also scored 32 times and drove in 20 runs. This year Harris is batting .399 with 3 home runs. Mullin Top NL Starter in May Sunday, June 1st, 1913: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, George Mullin still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 32-year-old starter for Boston was named National League Pitcher of the Month earlier today. He collected 5 wins and 1 loss with 25 strikeouts in his 7 starts, putting up a fine 3.45 ERA in 57.1 innings of work. So far this year Mullin has a 7-4 record with a 4.22 ERA.

We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Maisel enjoy the limelight. In 1913 Maisel has hit at a .352 clip with 126 hits, 1 home run, 33 RBIs and has scored 69 times.

Ruth Named Newcomer of the Month Friday, August 1st, 1913: Boston's Babe Ruth collected 35 hits to snare the American League Rookie of the Month for July. He batted .398 with 13 home runs, 38 RBIs and 25 runs scored. The 18-year-old is barely old enough to shave, but he could definitely contend for Rookie of the Year if he keeps up this pace. So far this season Ruth has gotten 143 hits in 398 at-bats for a .359 batting average with 35 home runs. His stats include 116 RBIs and 93 runs scored. He has played in 106 games. Redlegs Starter Wins NL Pitching Award Friday, August 1st, 1913: Jim St. Vrain's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 5-2 in July, the 30-year-old Cincinnati hurler has been named National League Pitcher of the Month. He fanned 22 in 58 innings, logged an ERA of 3.10 and allowed opponents to hit .269 against him. His record this season is 13-8 in 30 starts and St. Vrain has a 4.79 ERA.

Currently Harris is batting .358 with 5 home runs, 87 RBIs and 102 runs scored. Moore Earns August's Best Pitcher Honor Monday, September 1st, 1913: As Earl Moore hoisted up the National League Pitcher of the Month trophy for August, rumors have already begun to swirl about whether he will leave Cincinnati once his contract is up at the end of the season. Moore put pressure on the Redlegs to keep him around by posting a 7-0 record and an ERA of 3.26 over 58 innings last month. He also rolled up 23 strikeouts, increasing his value both to Cincinnati and to every other team in the league. In 36 starts this season, Moore has recorded 21 wins and absorbed 11 losses. This season Cobb has hit at a .438 clip and produced 129 RBI, 12 home runs and 152 runs. Great Week for Boston's Babe Ruth Monday, September 15th, 1913: The American League made it official today: Babe Ruth is the Player of the Week. He really glistened on the diamond this week with a .519 average to take home the honor. The Boston left fielder went 14-27, drove in 8 runs, scored 5 times and hit 3 home runs. This year Ruth has batted at a .357 pace with 199 hits, 48 home runs, 161 RBIs and scored 127 times. Moore Blanks Cubs Sunday, September 14th, 1913: "Good pitching beats good hitting" is an old baseball adage. Well, good pitching also beats bad batting. In his postgame interview the Chicago manager said, "Earl Moore made us look real bad today. He was outstanding. He was down in the zone with all his pitches. Everything was sinking." Moore had 4 strikeouts, 2 walks and allowed only 4 hits as the Cincinnati Redlegs whitewashed the Chicago Cubs 3-0.

This year's bat champion played in 162 games, scored 122 runs and drove in 139. Over the Top, Jackson Bats .411 Tuesday, September 30th, 1913: Joe Jackson of New York has joined a mere handful of men to hit over .400 for a single season. The 24-year-old Giants left fielder hit .411 in a colossal year at the plate, rapping out 275 hits, 60 doubles, 12 triples and 14 home runs. Baseball's latest member of the elite .400 club also drove in 176 runs and scored 141. "As much as I could, I tried to just forget about hitting .400 and just focus on each at-bat and trying to help my club," Jackson told BNN. "But as you guys know, there is no way to quietly hit .400." Giants Cobb Bats .439 in AL Tuesday, September 30th, 1913: Add the name Ty Cobb to the list of baseball players to hit .400 or better in a single season. The New York center fielder joined that elite group by hitting a jaw-dropping .439 this year. "To be mentioned among baseball's immortals," said Cobb, "is beyond my wildest dreams." Cobb's 310 hits included 49 doubles, 7 triples and 12 home runs. He also scored 165 runs and batted in 139.
