Brooklyn Shortstop Best Rookie
Monday, June 1st, 1914: Rogers Hornsby's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Brooklyn shortstop has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month. In May he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award. During the month he hit .353 with 4 doubles, 3 triples and 2 home runs. Hornsby also scored 22 times and drove in 15 runs. Hornsby is hitting .329 so far this season with 28 RBIs and 46 runs scored. He has 76 hits including 4 home runs, 19 walks and .388 OBP. Rookie Reaps Reward This Month Monday, June 1st, 1914: George Sisler earned May's Rookie of the Month honors in the American League for last month's performance. The boyish Washington right fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level. Sisler hit .388 with 3 home runs, 18 RBIs and 16 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award. Currently Sisler is batting .362 with 4 home runs, 29 RBIs and 34 runs scored. Giants Kaiserling May's #1 Pitcher Monday, June 1st, 1914: "The kid had it all working last month," a veteran teammate told reporters. "He keeps up those kind of numbers, we may have to start inviting him out with us after the games." George Kaiserling put together a very solid month to take home the National League's top pitching honor in May. The 21-year-old reliever threw like a veteran. In 15 relief appearances he raked in 12 saves and 5 strikeouts in 17 innings as he put together his 3-0 record and 1.06 ERA. In 24 relief appearances this season, Kaiserling has 17 saves. He has 3 wins and 1 loss, 2.05 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 26.1 innings. |

He captured the honor by hitting .411 in 23 games with 39 hits, 1 home run and 19 RBIs. this season for the Premier Rookie Named by AL Saturday, August 1st, 1914: Youngster Jack Tobin emerged as the latest American League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Philadelphia deserved the honor, batting .386 with 2 home runs and 12 RBI. Is the month of July a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Tobin enjoy the limelight. For the season Tobin is hitting .341, batted in 66 runs with 7 home runs and 66 runs scored. Best Starter Chosen by National League Saturday, August 1st, 1914: The Brooklyn Royal Giants felt very secure when they sent Jeff Tesreau out to the hill last month. The 26-year-old starter went after National League hitters with a vengeance and earned July's Pitcher of the Month award. He went 4-0 with a 2.49 ERA as he struck out 18 in 43.1 innings over 6 starts. This season Tesreau has worked 168 innings with 82 strikeouts en route to a 12-7 record and a 3.86 ERA. |

I have my guess , it is because those are the top three news stories on the main home page in game due to the order the awards are handed out perhaps. To get the other stories, you have to click through on more links and it slows down the process some.

Doyle Takes Best Bat Trophy in July
Saturday, August 1st, 1914: Free agent-to-be Larry Doyle has inflated his asking price over the past 30 days by winning the American League Batter of the Month. In July, the 28-year-old Boston second baseman hit .392 with no home runs and 19 RBIs. If he keeps putting numbers like that up, he could be hauling in a big wad of cash at this time next year. This year Doyle is batting .340 with 150 hits, no home runs, 66 RBIs, 24 walks, .379 OBP and has scored 56 runs. |

July's #1 Starter Named in AL
Saturday, August 1st, 1914: As Rube Waddell hoisted up the American League Pitcher of the Month trophy for July, rumors have already begun to swirl about whether he will leave New York once his contract is up at the end of the season. Waddell put pressure on the Yankees to keep him around by posting a 5-2 record and an ERA of 2.89 over 62.1 innings last month. He also rolled up 34 strikeouts, increasing his value both to New York and to every other team in the league. This year Waddell has a 21-11 mark in 36 starts with a 3.84 ERA. He has given up 291 hits in 271.2 innings, struck out 129 and issued 80 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .277 batting average against him. |

Week's Top Performer Honored by AL Monday, September 14th, 1914: With some great hand-eye coordination and a sweet, compact swing, Detroit Tigers first baseman Fred Luderus took the American League by storm this past week to take the latest Player of the Week honors. "The ball was looking like a beach ball all week," a happy Luderus said to BNN reporters. "When it's that big, it doesn't matter where they throw it -- I can hit it anywhere." The 29-year-old first baseman hit .556 (15-27) last week with 2 home runs, 14 RBIs and 6 runs scored. It doesn't happen every day, and when it does, it's exciting. Today Edd Roush of the Pittsburgh Pirates had a sensational 5-5 game against New York at Polo Grounds. He rifled base hits all over the ballpark in his team's 6-5 shellacking of the Giants. In the postgame press conference he joked, "Heck, that's a week's worth of hitting for me and I did it all in one day. I guess I can take the rest of the week off... Right, skipper?" E. Roush hit an RBI triple in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 7th and doubled in the 9th. Roush on the season is hitting .406 with 7 home runs. 25-Game Streak Ends, Strunk Hitless
Thursday, September 10th, 1914: The Philadelphia Athletics got more than a 10-4 victory over New York today at Shibe Park. They put an end to Amos Strunk's 25-game hitting spree by holding him without a hit in 4 at-bats. But it was no big deal to the Yankees center fielder. Strunk seemed to feel more for his team than himself. "I had some great looks at some pitches that I should have hit. I missed some that I shouldn't have swung at. All in all, I wasn't much help with the bat today." On the year Strunk is hitting .371 with 216 hits, 2 home runs, 78 RBIs, .423 OBP and has scored 105 runs. |

Lajoie on the Attack, Player of the Week
Monday, September 21st, 1914: Nap Lajoie showed showed his stuff this past week as the veteran rode a hot streak all the way to National League Player of the Week honors. The 40-year-old Cardinals first baseman compiled a .552 average (16-29), 1 home run and 7 RBIs. Lajoie is presently batting .359 with 5 home runs, 112 runs scored and 106 RBIs. His OBP is .390. AL Awards Player of the Week Trophy Monday, September 21st, 1914: The American League made it official today: Harry Lumley is the Player of the Week. He really sparkled on the diamond this week with a .393 average to take home the trophy. The Boston right fielder went 11-28, drove in 8 runs, scored 6 times and hit 2 home runs. Lumley is hitting .294 so far this season with 103 RBIs and 87 runs scored. He has 181 hits including 8 home runs, 43 walks and .337 OBP. Johnson Stops Philadelphia Cold Saturday, September 19th, 1914: Walter Johnson had the Philadelphia Phillies dancing to his tune today with a sparkling 7-0 shutout performance for the New York Giants. He gave up 4 hits and collected 1 walk and 6 strikeouts. Philadelphia hitters were bewildered throughout the game by his delivery. The opposing manager said, "When you face a guy who hides the ball like he does, it takes a couple of at-bats to try to find his release point. We just never figured him out." On the season Johnson has compiled a 17-11 mark with a 4.69 ERA in 41 starts. In pitching 247.1 innings he has 111 strikeouts and 78 walks while limiting the opposition to a .290 batting average. |

Player of the Week: Philadelphia's Riggert Monday, September 28th, 1914: Over the past week, Joe Riggert has feasted on American League pitching. I think historical alternate reality fast-sim is a strange creature. I think it's more reliant on the draft than other leagues and I haven't really figured out the trick to this deal either. I don't think it's endemic to your abilities, it's really just a tricky sort of experimental deal. I think it'll probably take another 20 years or so, before we really understand how this all works. I think with all of the early era ballplayers, coupled with the inherent quirks of fast-sim, that there's less mental judo to this to start...but that it'll eventually start to make more sense once the players become more familiar and the talent more widespread. But that's just me speculating. |

Kauff Bats .386, Wins AL Batting Title Wednesday, September 30th, 1914: Baltimore center fielder Benny Kauff had added the 1914 American League batting crown to his resume. He batted .386 with 37 doubles, 9 triples and 10 home runs among his 247 hits. Kauff also drove in 74 runs and scored 137. Pittsburgh's Roush Hits .401 Wednesday, September 30th, 1914: It might look like a typo in this season's stats reports. But the .401 next to the name of Edd Roush is no mistake. That's his batting average for the recently completed season. Roush is the newest member of baseball's .400 club. The Pittsburgh center fielder tried to downplay the achievement. "It's just a number," he said. Then he admitted with a grin: "Okay, it's a big number!" That number puts Roush in the record books with some of the game's great players. His other stats during this remarkable season include 275 hits, 47 doubles, 9 triples, 7 home runs, 120 runs and 99 RBIs. Giants Williams Joins .400 Club Wednesday, September 30th, 1914: New York's Cy Williams enjoyed a phenomenal 1914 season. I think everything that I have figured out so far about historical fast sim baseball is about to change with more players like Babe Ruth entering the league over the next 10-20 seasons with more power.
Up until now, people wern't hitting things out of the park and there really wern't that many high strikeout pitchers, so you end up with virtually every ball hit as hit in play. So controlling that as best you could was important, by having pitchers that would reduce the amount of those that went for doubles or triples, by having fielders that could get to more balls, by having fielders that wouldn't get errors that often.. Having hitters that could get on base in multiple different methods (good eye and bat), having those when they hit do more than just be punch and judy hitters, etc.. Also with less home runs, that means not giving away base runners is also important, there are tons and I mean tons of players in our league that have stolen base percentage of 50% or even less, which is just horrific.... This will all change as the game changes over the next 20 years though. |

I have met my greatest success as a OOTP multiplayer league GM in a 20s and 30s historical league, when most of the player ratings continued to look much like what we have in FOOLH. Of course, being able to tinker weekly made it play very different, but I feel like I have a decent enough grasp on the basics. Having experimented a bit in FOOLH, some of the early lessons I learned still seem to apply.
1. Pitchers are horses, so you don't need a huge staff, you need just enough to allow your offense to pinch hit and still have someone respectable to end the game for you. 2. From point one this follows: Two or three good hitters with cement hands are well worth stashing on your bench, just make sure they aren't anywhere near your depth chart defensively. 3. Everyday players must be able to catch the ball. 4. Just because some guys from this era can steal with eyepopping ease, most can't. See what Alan said. 5. Pitch around! In an era when everyone looks remarkably similar, you have to make the leap of faith that your AI manager will know that Babe Ruth is way better than everyone else. Don't let him hit!

Wow, what a first season. 109 wins, I'm floored. Last year's Giants won 88 games, 17 games behind Boston. 21 more wins, awesome!!!

109 wins is a FOOL-H record. I'm not sure how normal this is, i wouldn't expect it to be, but every member of my Giants squad with more then 150 at bat hit over .300 except rookie George Burns Babe Ruth hit 49 homers, with 154 rbi's 3 Members of the 400 club. Ty Cobb .428. 4th straight 300 hit season! Cy Williams .402 both from the Giants Pittsburgh's 21 year old Ed Roush hit .401

The ERA leader was Bill Stein of the Tigers, at an inflated 3.24. I guess with all the crazy offense, this makes sense.
The Yankees Rube Waddell at age 37 was amazing. He tied a career high with 28 wins, but he also started 54 games, pitching almost 400 innings. Looking at the record book, that's nothing compared to Addie Joss' 1907 season, but other then the members of NY's 3 man rotation, it led the league by a good margin.
