China's moon lander/rover starting to return pictures

I don't think I'd seen this posted here yet (always could have missed it) but China's unmanned lunar lander landed safely and released a robotic rover which is taking pictures.

Welcome to the 1970s. Maybe in another 40 years they'll be able to send a rover to Mars.

I personally think its awesome they've done so - the more steps mankind makes into space the better, if other countries show progress then hopefully it'll push competition between them.

That is an act of war, invading claimed US territory.

Agreed. When it comes to space, we need to stop thinking on a national level and start thinking as a species. Way to go, China.

Especially with the internet. You can go out and check out photos/video from any space program in an instant. There's no reason that even amateur scientists can't make findings from some of the material out there right now. It's happened several times already with photos from the Hubble Telescope.

Better to fight over this than pretty much anything else: "No, we can do science better!" "No, we can!"

I mean, you can screw it up by carelessly using dangerous things to "beat the other guy" but, still, it's better than war or economic warfare.

Until they discover rare minerals. Then it's space seals six time.

This space exploration won't do much good when all of their urban population starts dying from cancer caused by their horrific pollution problem.

So, yay China I guess?

Very little reward for something that has been covered for some time. I would think directing scientists and engineers toward technological advancements in solving key problems in their own country would provide a more tangible morale boost.

Good point. That would be a great idea here in the US too.

Disagree...China like other nations is interested in Space Exploration. The moon is a logical baby step for them. Say this for China, when they commit to something they go for it, resources be damned. China while it has a horrific pollution problem is also the leader in innovation for green energy, their drive for space is for the purpose of validating their standing globally, is another pathway towards innovation. You don't really see Russia or the USA taking the lead anymore, perhaps, China's interest in space, will act a driver for collaboration, or at least a driver for competition.
