I had read that it was because insurance companies are well known to not pay out on claims unless there is video evidence.

I'd read it was due to a large number of people purposely causing accidents or claiming there was an accident when there wasn't to get insurance money.

Yea, I've also read that they had an abnormally high number of people purposefully jump in front of cars to claim insurance. Who knows.

You can waste a couple hours searching for "russia car cam" on youtube and watching the often hilarious (but sometimes horrifying) videos.

I´m just now wondering when (not if) some director will shoot a horror movie with everything shot from theese car cameras or at least have it included in a few key scenes.

in all seriousnes though, this is pretty horrible stuff. Imagine that happening in the center of a major city ...

I always assumed that if a meteorite was going to hit the Earth, some scientists would have known about it in advance. Am I underestimating them?

I would imagine the simple answer would be: Depends on how big the object is, were they looking at the right place in the sky at the right time and how soon they see it.

I think there's a lot more automated help now, so it's not so bad as it used to be, still has a long way to go. However, I think the problem is, what's the plan of action when they DO discover one that is going to hit Earth that will cause major damage? I don't think the technology exists to deflect an asteroid/meteor/comet.

Well, I believe that a program to track possible meteor strikes is one of those things that we never funded. I remember scientists imploring NASA or the feds to put the money into that but I don't think it happened, more more likely they got a skeleton funding htat's not actually going to help.

NASA's Near-Earth Object Program at JPL is the center tracking the asteroid that passed by today. Whether the funding is sufficient is a judgement call. I suppose you could have an infinite number of telescopes searching for NEOs and never find them all. They seem to be doing an adequate job in at least giving us warning, although I seem to recall a decent size object whizzed by between here and the moon a few weeks ago that was undetected until it passed the moon.

But finding an object the size that hit Russia today is still going to be random luck. Trying to spot a 50-foot object from a few hundred thousand miles away? That's just luck if you find it.

Ya, I was kind of assuming this was a more minor smaller meteor that wouldn't be on the radar of scientists primarily looking for extinction-event type meteors, but then I read that today's meteor was the largest to reach the earth's atmosphere since the 1908 Siberia one. So it was a pretty big deal and could have done some major damage - though the Siberia one was 5-10 times bigger.

Yeah, that one was seen here in Jersey as well. Can't remember the link where I saw it but I know it was pretty clearly seen even further north than us as well.
