COVID-19 - 3/21 - Poll #6 - So what would you call this?

It's been in the news about how China is trying to re-brand this crisis. Reports that they are deflecting blame and even so far as to call it American made etc. Trump is reacting to this and now calling it the Chinese Flu and getting criticism for it.

IMO calling it the Chinese Flu is not appropriate even if it did start in China. I'm okay with calling it the Wuhan flu though.

So Trump antics notwithstanding, what are your thoughts?

Assume the scale is "1 and below", "2 and below", "3 and below".

(BTW - no IMO, it's not racist to call it the Chinese or China Flu per the ADL definition but definitely prejudicial/bigoted).

I thought this was another one of those much ado about nothing stories until I saw this.

https://www.cnn.com/world/live-news/...d242de4e94943e

If true than it's pretty absurd and he deserves all flack his way. COVID-19 seems fairly simple, corona isn't exactly accurate but we know what you are talking about, never heard Chinese virus until recently. (Obviously seen Wuhan as that has been the running thread title here.)

When I first started this thread, it was called the Wuhan flu. I updated to add COVID-19 after the WHO (I think) started calling it that.

Pointless poll or thread. The non-Chinaphobic 99.99999% of the world does not call it "Chinese Flu".

I think people are just being oversensitive again.

Is the Spanish Flu being renamed too? I'm sure people are trying.

It's not pointless over hear though. There has been an uptick in reports of aggression towards Asian-Americans because of his rhetoric.

IMO he is doing it to try and lay the blame on China and not himself.

Yeah see I agree with this but then when I saw that article I linked where Trump (or an advisor) went out of their way to change the name to Chinese on every line I thought it was a bit ridiculous. There is absolutely plenty of more important things to spend time on or be outrage about but this went from silly to another L/R thing fairly quickly.

I have just been calling it COVID-19 though I think Wuhan Coronavirus is fine as well. From what I've read this virus likely jumped from bats to humans due to the conditions of the wet markets there.

I think calling it the Chinese or China Coronavirus/flu is inappropriate though as I think both will lead to unnecessary racism/bigotry/hate crimes against those with Chinese ethnicity in their respective countries.

If you mean to say 99.99999% of the world is non-Chinaphobic (phobic meaning prejudice), you are wrong. There is a lot more China-phobic folks in Asia (and likely many other places) than you are thinking.

If you mean to say 99.99999% of the non-Chinaphobic people (so maybe 40-60% of the world), yeah I get your point.

I've called it Beer Flu from pretty much day one, and that's what I've stuck with.

You know what I mean when I say it, it avoids me trying to remember an acronym much less a number, and requires less typing in that format.

My secondary reference has been Wuhan Virus but the split is probably around 95-5 in favor of my primary.

All the names are pretty lame. Something catchier would be more appropriate.

I consider that to be the "full name", I use Beer Flu as it's everyday name

Everybody should start publicly calling the now obviously often referenced 2009/10 pandemic (Swine Flu/H1N1) the American Flu until Trump stops

Calling it a Coronavirus while not wrong is misleading as there are a lot of coronaviruses out there. COVID-19 is fine as well. I have no problem calling it the Wuhan flu or virus since it originated there.

I think there are two issues at play, China being China and Trump being Trump. I do believe that most of the western world should take a more antagonistic approach to China's government in general (in which case I agree with Trump), but I disagree with calling the virus the Chinese flu to make that case.

Guess we could call it the Kansas Flu if we want.

WHO put out their best practices years ago. If you read their reasoning, it makes sense. When we dubbed H1N1 "swine flu", it hurt the pork industry and led to the unnecessary slaughter of pigs.

It doesn't really matter what it's called in the end. I'd stick with what the scientists call it. But we all know why there is a push to label it the Chinese virus.

FWIW.

2009 flu pandemic - Wikipedia
Quote:
Analysis of the genetic divergence of the virus in samples from different cases indicated that the virus jumped to humans in 2008, probably after June, and not later than the end of November,[17] likely around September 2008.[18][19] The research also indicated the virus had been latent in pigs for several months prior to the outbreak, suggesting a need to increase agricultural surveillance to prevent future outbreaks.[20] In 2009, U.S. agricultural officials speculated, although emphasizing that there was no way to prove their hypothesis, that "contrary to the popular assumption that the new swine flu pandemic arose on factory farms in Mexico," the virus "most likely emerged in pigs in Asia, but then traveled to North America in a human."[21] However, a subsequent report by researchers at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 2016 found that the 2009 H1N1 virus likely originated from pigs in a very small region of central Mexico.[22]

But yeah, honestly no problems calling it a "US or States Flu" if it originated here ... especially so if it caused a Global Recession or possibly Depression with a lot of lives lost.
