League Match #11: we play Wigan at Loftus Road. They jus promoted to the EPL after finishing in 2nd place in the Championship. They are currently in 19th place though and we're evens favourites to win this game. Igor Nadal Lázaro suffered some bruised ribs on October 18 and is one day from being healthy. Justin Wall is on the bench. I see he isn't unhappy anymore. I guess I gave him just enough playing time, although he is still unsettled... GRRRR, the first half goes scoreless. Shots are kept low, with us getting 4(3) and them getting 3(2). AAAARRGG!!! We put more and more pressure as the game goes on, but we just can't the winning goal... Final Score: 0-0 We outshot them 8(5) to 3(2) on the game, meaning we shut them down in the second half, but the most important is that they shut us down of any goal... They keeper is selected Man of the Match with a rating of 8. Jan Lastuvka collects another rating of 8. I hate it when everybody else decides to take it cool though. Nobody else got higher than 7. We move up to 10th, 3 points from 3rd place!
Fábio Rochemback has been automatically banned for one match after collecting a 5th yellow card. FM

I got the dreaded "saved game could not be loaded" message last night, meanig the savegame got corrupted in some ways. The game file that was up to about 240Mb is now only 126Mb after Wednesday night's save and I don't have any backups. This morning, I am truly, genuinely devastated. Last night was the first night in a long while that even though I was at home, I didn't play FM at all. I mean, there have been evenings when I was out of the house that I didn't get to play, but every evening with at least 30 minutes to an hour of time where I'm home, I'd squeeze at least 20 minutes to play the game. Not yesterday Before you ask, no I have not asked anybody from SI for help. Not sure if I plan to. That was such a great career, getting it back with less than the whole thing would just not be the same... Hope you liked the reading while it went on. I will most certainly start a new career, but no dynasty for a while, probably not before FM2006 comes out and I've had some time to tinker with it... Sorry to let you hanging guys. As much as I was crushed to be sacked by Luton, this here is thousand times tougher to take... If I've learned one thing from this, it's that I'll save under a different name every night from now on, deleting older files as I go along... Bye Big Dan Shittu, bye Fritz, bye Marcus, bye Fábio the Roch, bye wonderkid "sl"Howell (for Desnudo), bye Yahoo... Finally, bye Loftus Road... sigh... FM PS: I had about a week (gametime) of unreported stuff that I don't feel like putting into formal reports here. In it, we played and beat Coventry in round 3 of the League Cup. Readers with good memories will remember who signed from us to Coventry on a free transfer in the offseason prior to the 2012/13 season: Jeppe Lund Curth... We had also played and beat Aston Villa in league play and were sitting in 9th place, only 3 points from 4th place. Rafa Benítez had also been sacked from Liverpool in a move that surprised me very much. Finally, maybe the thing I'll remember the most about this career, on November 1st, which happens to be my birthday IRL, the board confidence update mentionned something I had never seen before. They were now not simply delighted with my work as a manager, but they were now, and I quote, "absolutely thrilled with the level of commitment I continue to show the club." Sadly that, and the news that Anthony Vanden Borre had resumed full training following surgery and physiotherapy, were the last things I wrote down about my career...

That's a killer. This was my favorite dynasty.
I wanted to see if you could get QPR into the Champion's League. Thanks for writing it. |

oh boy.
yes, let this be a cautionary tale. always save under a new name. Get a 1GB usb drive or something and store it in a climate controlled vault when not in use. don't become another corrupted save game victim.... and thanks for the dynasty, was pretty interesting. good luck on the boards, and we'll look forward to seeing you lead QPR again in the future. |

Sorry to hear that FM. I always had a great time reading your dynasty and hearing about your ups and downs with the teams you were coaching.

So, since I'm about to receive this game in the mail, how often should I save off to a different file to avoid this problem. Once a season, quarterly, monthly?????????? Is this something that occurs with regular frequency? Is MV aware of the problem and working to solve it? Any help is appreciated.

It's not something that happens with any great frequency. For example, I've never encountered the problem in 25-30 seasons of simming. However, it is a known problem that does occur from time to time. FM05 has been fully patched, so the next version will be FM06, released sometime this fall. Sorry to hear it Froggy. I had a game crash problem, fixed in the first patch, with FM that ruined my dynasty, so I know how you feel. Last edited by Desnudo : 06-10-2005 at 03:40 PM. |

Sorry, FrogMan, I have never commented before, but this has been pretty much the only dynasty I have read for a while. I too will miss it.

Thanks for the good words everyone, very appreciated. I've been sort of taking a break from the game lately, well since shit hit the fan.
Been talking with Tellisto and we sort of think that my PC not having enough memory might have been the cause of the corrupted savegame file. My PC is a Compaq Presario running an AMD Athlon 2000+ (1.67Ghz) with only 256Mb of RAM. Bought it in February 2003, more than 2 years ago, and at the time, 256Mb of RAM was almost high end when I got it. Sadly, while the crappy video card that's in it is plenty good to play FM, the RAM isn't. To tell you how bad it is, the game hung on me while trying to start a new game with 7 leagues on 6 nations (Spain's top two levels and top levels in England, Italy, France, Germany, Holland). Money is tight for us and I wasn't planning to upgrade on RAM since I had decided to invest in a digital camera (my one big purchase this year, heh) but I found so many good rebates and made some good savings that I was able to buy a 512Mb stick of memory at a very reasonable price from tigerdirect.ca. Order is on the way, weehee!!! I started a diminutive career (Spain and Italy's top 2 levels) but I'll definitely restart when I'll get the RAM in the PC, this time with a few more leagues. The other thing, and I'd like your opinions on this, is about the déjà vu effect. What do you do about it? I mean, it's weird being back in 2004/05 and being able to do a search for César Augusto Fawcett and getting a neat 18yo on the listing, that you know will be a very good player when he'll be 24 or so. Or how about Freddy Guarin, that I now know will be great someday? I'm serisouly thinking about playing without the real names on, anybody doing that on a regular basis? I think it would probably solve part of the thing. Fwiw, I'm thinking about picking a middle of the road to low position top level team from Spain. I'm still unsure about which team for now. My temp career was started with me taking over Real Sociedad, who have a great history, but have not been doing very well in the last several years. Although they got a 2nd place in 2002/03, they've finished around 13-15 for the last 6 or 8 seasons... Another idea could be to start with QPR again and see if I could duplicate my success, but starting in 2004/05. I mean, I know the board they have, they are willing to improve the stadium at least a little, they are willing to spend what they make, etc. I'll think about it until the RAM comes Thanks again for the support! FM

Frogman,
I don't have FM2005, but in EHM2005, I've heard the replay value is great and no 2 games are the same... Just because a player progressed great in one universe doesn't mean he will when you start a new game. The potentials are randomized every time. Again, I don't know if this is the case in FM, but I would assume it is. |

What i've gatherd from the SI boards is that some players in FM2005 ALWAYS have the same potenial and some players are more random. So a player like Guarin always turn into a very good player, while there are other players that don't.
Im not sure what i'll do if i start again. Every player i've ever gotta i've personally scouted myself. I couldn't actually 'Cheat" and use the SI forums 'Good Player forum" because it took me over a week to get my username registered. (i have a yahoo email and they don't except yahoo, i had to get Marc to help me out). If you still wanna use real players maybe you should start with a broke lower level team. By the time you take them to the top and get some money to spend, all the 'Wonderkids" of 2005 will be picked up already.

A few "can't miss" guys, like Wayne Rooney, have a set potential that doesn't vary. Older players that are fully developed also have a set potential. The rest all get assigned a volatility rating. For example, one player could generate a potential of 160-200/200, while another might generate 80-200. The real player question, I believe the true lower league managers use random players. Not for me since I enjoy the fantasy of signing real players, but I think it would definitely add to the challenge. |

I had a crash with my east Fife game and had to restart. This time I had the same players, but the subjective ratings were very different. Some of the ratings that are self evident to a researcher seem to be hard coded, but the others can vary siginificantly. I'm definitely using different players in the lineup this time around.
