EPIC smackdown of Copyright Troll.

Does Prenda Believe In No-Win Scenarios? Because Judge Wright Just Gave Them One. | Popehat

Group of lawyers apparently acquire a bunch of copyrights to porn movies, hide ownership behind a bunch of shell companies (including apparently forging the signature of their gardener to hide that they own the copyright), and then go suing all and sundry, based on shoddy evidence and supposition. They then "graciously" offer a four or five figure settlement or face outing as a downloader of porn (despite the fact most of them did no such thing)

I've seen some pretty decent legal smackdowns in my time (Whacko Jacko Thompson and SCO Group come to mind), but geeeeeeez the judge tears them a new orifice, and then tears several more into them just in case.

Awesome line:

Recommended IRS, investigation on RICO charges, and reported to the IRS.

As my friend Mike Sweetser said "It probably would have been kinder to just shoot them in the head"

I was completely unaware of this case until now, so thanks for posting that Fozzie. That was indeed an epic read. Not only did the judge tear them several new orifices, he took the liberty of stuffing them with tribbles while he was at it. Brought a tear to my eye.

So one of the Prenda lawyers in Georgia is telling the Federal judge in his case that because California recognizes gay marriage, and Georgia doesn't, he doesn't have to abide by the orders of the Federal judge in California. Good luck with that.

Things get worse and worse for Prenda. Another federal judge has referred them to investigators in the US Attorney's office, and has ordered them to reimburse people who have settled and cover their legal fees.

Prenda Law “copyright trolls” Steele and Hansmeier arrested | Ars Technica

Quote:
The indictment explains how the defendants "used sham entities to obtain copyrights to pornographic movies—some of which they filmed themselves—and then uploaded those movies to file-sharing websites in order to lure people to download the movies."
