Basically, saying that he's powerless to actually make the Senate hold a trial until Biden is sworn in.

Which pretty much takes impeachment off the table, even as a threat.

McConnell is willing to give up that leverage over Trump to pressure him to resign because, it seems, McConnell does not want him to resign.

Even now, McConnell is protecting Trump.

The other way I am seeing some people interpret this is McConnell telling Trump "Look, if they impeach you, Schumer will be in charge of the trial in the Senate, not me. So it will be pretty shitshow for you. So just resign."

Either way, McConnell Pontius Pilates his way out of running the trial and probably doesn't really care much one way or the other.

I think I need to get offline for the night. Trump's living rent-free in my head right now, and considering that he's barred from living in Mar-A-Lago, I don't want him getting any ideas.

Frankly, I don't necessarily disagree with you, but I'd be just as happy if all these actions led to the collapse/re-evaluation of these social media companies as well, so it all tastes like gravy to me today.


Further, we need to be ripping band-aids off and try fundamentally new directions culturally, not carefully trying to get back to where we were next week, and that kind of drastic action will never be perfect, but we shouldn't let that be the enemy of acting right as best we can, as cliche as that sounds.

That it's happening so quickly and so coordinated is chilling and does not bode well for the future. Nor does the Tweet about Biden trying to do a new Domestic Terrorism bill (if it's credible). We don't need Patriot Act II - we need to walk back huge swaths of Patriot Act I.

On the other hand, a lot of these are people who should have been shut down years ago. They're only just now being deplatformed because the people killed indirectly by their actions became a high enough profile event. And the cynic in me says that it's because they finally got too toxic for the social media brand. Dorsey gets very little credit from me for throwing Trump off Twitter today. Twitter and Trump were great for each other just as people like Joe Scarborough and CNN made a killing on sensationalizing and/or cozying up to Trump news. So Dorsey made his money with every news station blasting about what Trump tweeted daily but now he's too toxic to keep there so he's being discarded just like so many people he used. Where was he years ago when Trump should have been banned for any number of instances?

TL;DR It was something that should have been done a long time ago but it also gives me a very uneasy feeling.

I totally agree that it's not a free speech issue but I think I have an even bigger issue with it than SI. The bottom line is that more and more people get their news from social media. It doesn't matter if that's a good thing, it's reality and it's not likely to change. Those platforms are there to make money, so they're going to make whatever decisions help them do that.

The market is determining more than ever what truth is and what information people will, practically speaking, have the most access to. I don't have an answer to it aside from the usual need for more civic virtue from the electorate to dig through the crap, but I have little doubt the future in this area will be far worse than what we have now. And I guarantee there will be times where the same people cheering the shutdown of certain blowhard voices at the moment will be furious when 'their' point of view gets the hammer in times when different popular winds are blowing. Political correctness on steroids is here, and it's not going away.

Trump isn't silenced. He could get airtime on FOX, OANN, Newsmax, and probably others at any time he wants. He could give an official statement or press conference. He could sit down for an interview with any number of print or web outlets.

The problem is that each one of those outlets would be able to respond. The beauty of Twitter is that the President can speak and no one has to hear anything that contradicts or challenges him. He doesn't want a place to speak, he wants a place to speak without repercussions.

To be fair, it has been terrifying since this is not the first time we have done this. Check the impact that SESTA/FOSTA had on silencing a certain segment of people. This is just an extension of that.
