Alright guys, for today's choice, what are your thoughts. In terms of who we are, is it more evil to save our own skin by fighting as a team and THEN getting the girl or more sneaky to have two of us attack the Viper while Hoops sneaks around to save her?

I'm tempted to go with the second but what are your thoughts?

Screw the girl, lets take care of ourselves in this one. I'm in this for the long haul and want to see what kind of tricks/traps that KWhit is going to be unfurling in this one. I can't see a Day 1 deficit being something we can't overcome later.

That is my evil take on things, anyway.

If we have to dictate what actions we are taking individually, then I'll do whatever makes sense from a thief point of view.

I agree. The prize money and the fame for winning will get us any many maidens as we want by the end anyway.

All three of you decide to attack the viper. Surrounding it on three sides you back it against the rocks below the maiden. She screams "Help me!" distracting the viper. PurdueBrad attacks first. SLICE! An immediate Critical wound to start the crawl!

The viper bleeds from a huge gash in its side and flails about, but it's not dead yet!

It swipes it tail in defense, slamming against PurdueBrad's legs, knocking him prone but doing no damage.

Next to attack is J23. He swings his staff. Whiff.

Then Hoops. First dagger attack thwacks into the viper, doing more damage. Second dagger: Miss.

The viper attacks with his poisonous fangs, going after PB. A critical hit. That's gotta hurt. PB is hurt badly. And poisoned.

He struggles back up to his feet as the viper takes a tail swipe at J23 this time, hitting and knocking J23 to the grass.

J23 takes his turn just getting up to his feet.

Hoops needs to hit with one of his daggers. Does he? Nope. Miss and miss.

A lunging bite from the viper, again to PB, hits. PB is in sad shape.

But he's standing now and takes a massive swipe at the viper, cutting its head clean off.

You have defeated the viper!

Hoops steps forward, working on the lock to free the maiden. It takes 2 tries, but all in all, he does it relatively quickly.

The maiden plants a wet kiss on Hoopsguy's lips and says "Thank you" in a way only a maiden can before the referee grabs you and points you toward a door in the side of the coliseum. You rush through it and into the next room.

It took your team 5 turns to make it through this challenge.

We have fans? Of course we do ... the other would-be evil groups went dashing in to save the girl. I think there is a total of one collection of true blackhearts in this game and that would be us. The rest will be exposed as frauds by the end.

PB, it would help if the guy with the longsword could avoid being critically hit. I really don't want to have to be the one taking out foes and opening up loot.

J23 - how much are you going to charge our poisoned cohort for a heal spell?

Healing potions 25gp
Necklace of Health 150gp
Bow of accuracy 50gp
50' Rope 10gp
Lockpicks +1 50gp
Runes of magic warding 100gp
Empty flask 5gp
An unidentified scroll 75gp

Let me know what (if anything) you wish to purchase by noon tomorrow - by PM.

So, combined we have 150g. What do we think can help us the most?

Hmmm, to be honest the healing potions look like a good deal at only 25 per (but this is coming from the asshole that got himself poisoned). Rope is interesting at only 10, followed by the scroll since J23 can read magic. I put in a prelim to KWhit to buy healing potions so I can tank a bit better. Stupid viper.

I would prefer to save most of our cash for later items. We have three tap-outs (right?) so I'm not sweating an early death all that much. And if KWhit follows the model that Abe had for his game then the good stuff won't come up for a couple of days.

PB, I think you are the only one of us who played in that one so correct me (if you dare) in the event that my recollection is off.

I'll have to go re-read how often I can use my spells. I know if we heal in between events it will cost us some time, but probably worth it to conserve deaths from our main fighter.

Getting flask (5), rope (10), and a healing potion (25) would be a good way to go, in my opinion. That would give us multiple options in case we need them for some specific room/quest later while leaving the bulk of our cash for a later purchase.

Disregard this if we can't get multiple items or are bidding against the other teams for each individual item.

Abe had things spread out but there were some really good things late, that is true. If I recall, accumulating gold will be very important.

J23, I'll ask KWhit about the heal spell and how it effects us, although since we're shopping it may not.

I can front the $ for the rope, flask, and health potion as well, I'll send that in now.

I PM'ed KWhit the following questions:

1- Can heal spell cure poison (from Abe's game, this was not so)

2- How often can J23 use spells

3- How does his use of a spell effect our overall gameplay, movement, etc.

I'll get you answers when I get them.

Give me the rope. It will be useful for hanging one of you two when you are no longer useful to me. Hmm, did I say that out loud?

PB, you keep the healing potion since it seems likely you'll be wading into combat most often.

Flask for J23? Because he seems like the most likely drunk out of our group.

Hoops will have the rope, J23 the flask.

J23 can only heal hit points OR poison, not both at once.

It adds a couple seconds to our time if he does it in a non-combat situation. In a combat situation it does both add time AND take him out of a combat round I believe.

I think that's all I've got.

Well, we can either unpoison you or let you bleed out and start over. I suppose I would prefer the first so I don't have to get my hands dirty with stuff like vipers and the like.

Try not to waste everyone's time by getting hit next time, OK? If the other cretins are to be believed they did find the initial encounter to be all that taxing.

I'm curious if by facing it as a trio if it somehow effected our combat because we obviously were the only team to save our own skin.

I'll drink my original potion to heal my poison and hopefully J23 will be willing to heal my health points. If you want J23, I have 10 gold left after today's purchase and will give that to you for the heal.

Not sure if we were slow as the only team saving our own skin (probably) or just a bit behind because we weren't exactly efficient taking out the monster.

Sorry, been a busy morning. Catching up now.

I'll PM KWhit to say I'm healing you, and you can just give me a cut of our final spoils instead of the 10 gold now. I expect far more than that for having to lift a finger.

I don't feel like such a douchebag anymore after re-reading the write-up. I actually fought okay outside of the critical strike against me. I hit him with a critical and finished him off. I can live with that part. I've felt pretty crappy since I was the only person of the four teams (at least my impression) that got his ass kicked.

I suspect the others are puffing themselves up publicly to sow the kind of doubt you seem to be experiencing. There is no need to worry about their affairs, unless we are presented an opportunity to attack them directly.

I also hope you fight better than "okay" next time out. I was under the impression that I was being paired with a warrior of renown.

Hey, you just sit there and keep hoping that Moore and Johnson are going to leave Purdue. And while we're at it, you little thief, did you carve those thief skills out when you stole Jeff George from Purdue? You worry about stealing and looting, I'll worry about saving you...unless I get distracted again.

Room 3

Note that this is in the TEAM THREAD. People's rooms may or may not be different from here on out. You are free to discuss in the main thread if you so choose.

You quickly make your purchases from the old man and continue through a door clearly marked for your team. At least you won't get lost. Not yet, anyway.

Upon entering the next room, you are blinded. You see nothing but white. Fearing the worst, you reach for your weapons, but your vision clears in a moment and you realize it's just the lights from the TV camera crew standing in front of you.

TV monitors line the walls and you see the audience assembled in the coliseum. You realize that they are still there watching you on closed circuit TV. Cheers and boos rain down on you from the monitors. You're separated from the other teams now and wonder if they are in a similar room.

In the middle of the room are 5 numbered chests. The numerals go from 1 to 5. You take stock and notice that chests number 1 and 5 appear to be locked. The others are not.

The audience members are yelling from the stands, trying to get you to pick certain chests, but you can't glean any useful information from that as they seem to contradict each other. However, you do notice a member of the camera crew (unfortunately, it is not Scud Farkus) trying to catch your eye. He points at chest number 4 and quickly shakes his head as if to say "don't."

Decision Time:

I need you to tell me which chests (if any) you want to open and which character opens which ones. You can take enough time to open them all if you like or you can ignore the chests and rush through the room.

In addition, I need to know if you want to open the chests quickly or take the time to check for traps. Any character can try to check for traps, but your Specialist will obviously be better at it. You realize that any of the chests could be trapped, even the ones that are unlocked.

So send me something that lists each chest and if you want to open it or ignore it. If you want to open it, tell me who opens it and whether they want to check for traps or do it quickly.

Each team should PM me their order by 9pm tonight.

I have a couple of questions for the powers that govern this realm (KWhit):

1.) I don't see anything here that suggests a reason to rush through the room, other than fear of traps on chests. Is there a time element to this one like the last challenge?

2.) Can people open multiple chests or is it one per person?

Personally, I would like to open the chests. I realize that we could potentially unleash traps, creatures, or some other nasty surprises but I also want gold and equipment and those are usually associated with chests. I also think that our fame should increase by virtue of engaging the room, rather than engaging in a cowardly rush past this challenge.

My initial instinct is that I should check for traps and then open one of the locked chests.

Chest #4, the one that we were warned about ... anyone feel like defying the cameraman?

There is a time element to every action you take. You are currently in a race to the end of the dungeon. Just because I posted a time at the end of that first room doesn't mean that the race is paused. Your other competitors are still going through their sections as fast as they can, so I'll be calculating the standings all the time.

Even casting spells takes time.

People can open multiple chests, but the clock is ticking. If you take the time to have one person open all 5 chests, that will take a lot longer than all three of you getting involved. Or you could just choose to each open one chest and then move to the next room. Your choice.

J23 - you have detect magic, correct? It might make sense to do that before we start opening chests. From there, we can determine which chests we want to address.

Locked chest w/magic = what I want to open as priority.

Agree with Hoops on J23's action. As for the chests, here is my belief.

Definitely open 1, 2, and 4. Hoops, you'll have to do #1 because of the lock. I am willing to risk chest #4, because of my constitution/hit points it would make sense for me to do that. Plus I'm the tank. That leaves #2 for J23. I can't really tell you why #2, just a gut feeling.

I don't think we should open them all, but that's me. This could be a chance to catch up some.

Lets wait to see what J23 finds with detect magic before we declare chests. But I'll declare now that I'll take the chest out of #1/#5 that shows magic, assuming only one. If none/both show magic then I'll take #1.

Sounds like a good plan. I'll cast detect magic. It's hopefully worth the time spent to know where to focus our efforts.

If we think one is trapped, we could always "ask" that camera crew guy to open a chest or two for us...

KWhit - Do I have to PM you for the spellcast or does saying it in the thread suffice?

Normally it's best to PM me. But this is fine this time.

You cast the spell. The spell indicates that chests #2 and #5 contain magic of some kind.

OK, then lets work with the idea that I'm going to:
1.) check #5 for traps
2.) pick the lock
3.) react with shock/awe at the power of the magical item within (or the magical creature waiting to ambush me)
