OOTP: Greatest Player I've Ever Seen.
I ran an overnight sim using the NABA setup that had the most incredible outlier I've ever seen. The .380 mark was broken 16 times in 77 seasons. That's something that I'd look at initially and be concerned that it's way too high. However, it's not as heinous when one looks a little deeper and realizes that the same guy did it ELEVEN of those times. In literally thousands of seasons of test simming with OOTP9, I've never seen anyone anywhere near this guy. And keep in mind that in the NABA, stats are quite a bit lower than 2008 standards. To put his numbers in perspective:
MacIntyre Career Average: .3725 Second-Best Career Average: .3374 MacIntyre Career Slugging: .6789 Second-Best Career Average: .6222 MacIntyre Career RBI: 2663 Second-Best Career RBI: 2151 In other words, there was Jason MacIntyre, and then there was everyone else. Consider this: from age 22 to age 38, he won 16 of 17 possible MVPs.

OK. Here's another crazy number for him. I just checked the HoF and looked at career VORP. He's at 2627, and #2 is 1572.9. Apart from #s 2-4 of all-time, you can add up any TWO HoF players' VORP, and the total would be less than that of MacIntyre.

He's Wayne Gretzky!
On a related note, one issue I have with OOTP is that there are way too many "super players" - guys who hit for high average and for power. There are far too many Triple Crown winners in OOTP leagues, and on average, way too many guys who are in the top 10 in HR who also have lifetime BAs well over .300. Just something I've noticed.

The year before he left Toronto! That's the kind of player that fantasy baseball leagues would have to take completely out of the draft pool. |

I love how he avoided American teams, too.

You know, I'm staying with my fictional MLB league.. my numbers don't seem so "off" after looking at this guy.
Great stuff though! |

Well, the thing about this guy isn't just the eye-popping numbers; it's the eye-popping numbers in a lower offensive environment. I'm guessing that a 100/100/100 player generated in the MLB environment could approach 80 HR in a season.

I like seeing players like this, though. Makes scouring the history worth it.

I have a guy who hit 73 last year in my league.. definitely more in line with the "steriod" area.. but it's only a small sample as my league is only 5 years old.

Wow... I've never seen such a dominant player before. Reminds me of Babe Ruth in his prime. |

OBP of .545 That would far & away be the best offensive season in baseball history. That's just insane. Ben, how did his teams fare? |

Don't know. That was a test career. I'm not even certain I have it. Like I said, I've run literally thousands of test seasons, and a few dozen careers.

I think something you have to remember whenever you see something "off" in any text sim is that, through message boards and our own experiences, we have access to thousands and thousands of seasons. If the real MLB was played out over thta many seasons, we'd surely see several players like that come around. |

That's why Ben simmed 25 years in the NABA, deleted the history, and then picked up with the NABA history in 1976. That league is actually older, but he threw out the players that were created with the game because they tend to be a lot better than the players created thereafter.

Old thread, but I just noticed looking at this guy that despite the fact that he was so dominate, he only beat Pete Rose's hit record by 43.
EDIT: But I also just noticed that this guy had 3000 walks, which was just about twice as many as Rose had. Last edited by fantom1979 : 05-15-2009 at 01:25 AM. |

I started a historical sim in 1876 and had a picture win 812 games Things liik real good from 1901 forward in OOTP 10, but averages and wins are still inflated in the 1800s, tough to really get balance there.
