WW CVI: Evil Star Trek--GAME OVER!! (Results in Post #643)

Space...the Final Frontier...

Mirror, Mirror is an original Star Trek episode that is considered one of the best of the original series. It's a personal favorite of mine, not only because of the usual reasons (Star Trek, baby), but the UIC on this one is through the roof, especially viewed through the prism of time. Come on, a replica alternate dimension--but evil? The now cliché concept of the Evil Twin? Promotion--through assassination? The fabled "he has a goatee, he must be the evil twin" theme? An episode that feels like it was solely written to show off Uhura in risqué outfits during the 60s?

It doesn't get more golden than that. I present to you Evil Star Trek, our next WW adventure... To Boldly Go, Where No Man (Except Gene Roddenberry...) Has Gone Before...

Kirk is featured here in the more outlandish uniform of the evil universe as he tries to figure out how to get back to a universe where Chekov isn't trying to kill him. Notice Uhura's kickin' bod and ripped midriff in the background.

The starship USS Enterprise is beaming back its away team--including Capt. James T. Kirk--from its most recent mission when it is hit by an unexpectedly powerful ion storm. In the physics defying way that can only happen on a TV show, the transporter beam has crossed into an alternate realty and stranded our captain and his companions in an alternate realty Enterprise, where things are somewhat familiar and yet altogether wrong. For one thing, everyone's evil in this alternate universe! Even Spock.

Meanwhile, the evil Kirk and his away team are similarly accidentally beamed to the "good" universe. Will Spock--good Spock--figure out what's going on? Can good Kirk find his way back to his own universe? Will evil Kirk willingly return to his own universe when he could rule in this one?

The villagers in this one will be trying to return things to what they should be. The wolves will be fighting to survive--no matter what universe they're in!

For more information on Mirror, Mirror, feel free to read up its Wiki page (link at end of paragraph). This game will be based around the conventions and characters of the original Star Trek universe and take some story elements from this episode, but not all elements in the episode or the universe will necessarily be used or be exactly the same. A little knowledge of the show is useful, but not necessary to play.

Mirror, Mirror Wiki page

Kirk and evil Spock assessing an unexpected situation. How do you know it's evil Spock? Dude, look at that goatee, he's obviously evil!!!

BASIC GAME DETAILS

This section will likely be expanded as we go along, but this is where the basic game details will be posted.

I anticipate getting this game up and going by Tuesday (with roles going out either early Monday night or late Monday night, depending on if I can get everything set to go out from work Monday afternoon).

I believe it is important we get this one going fairly soon, as Thanksgiving is looming. A Tuesday start will ensure this game will end well before the holiday break.

This will be a one "necessary" deadline game (i.e. a 24 hour, one deadline per day, game). That deadline will be a 9 p.m. EST/6 p.m. PDT.

I believe any later than that is just too late for the East Coast folks, but any earlier, and West Coast folks (like me) find it hard to get home from work in time.

There will be no weekend play.

I am still working out some of the finer balancing details and one of the details in the balance is a possible optional midday trivia contest deadline, in which the winner may obtain an item of some use in the game. If this optional trivia deadline is used (and I reserve the right to not do it--this will be fully spelled out in the Game Rules & Roles), it will likely be somewhere from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. EDT.

But this second deadline, if used, is entirely optional, and it is not necessary to be present or to participate whatsoever to play in the game.

Standard WW posting rules will generally apply, and where they differ, I should note in the rules (or if I forget some detail, just ask me, of course). Voting, or any other public actions, will need to be BOLDED to be counted. Caps helps it to stand out, but only the bold is necessary for the vote/action to count.

Votes/actions/PMs will be accepted up to and through the "zero" time (i.e. votes will be accepted up to and including 9:00 p.m. on the forum clock; votes at 9:01 p.m. and beyond will count for the next day).

Although there will be a lot of color and some key differences, for the most part, this should be basic WW play, with the usual roles in place, but maybe dressed up to fit the story or for balance.

I can take as many players as wish to play, although ideally no more than 20 to be sure to not unnecessarily hit the holiday break.

If enough players sign up, this game will be a two thread game (two smaller games running concurrently), an "evil universe" thread and a "good universe" thread. But if the sign up list is light, I have a modified version that will work in one universe (one thread).

Up to two days per week (Mondays and Wednesdays), I work at a second job at night and will not be available at deadline. The deadline remains the same, but I will run the results when I return from work. I may get someone to run the results for me, but that is still to be determined.

I have decided to go with the single game/thread universe, as it will be easier to manage. If this game goes well, I might at some point re-do this theme with the two universe concept.

GAME RULES

This game happens aboard the Starship ISS Enterprise--in the alternate "evil" universe.

An away team from the universe we know as the "good universe" have been beamed into the evil universe and are trying to get back. They are the wolves. Physically, they resemble the evil versions of themselves, whom have also been accidentally beamed to the good universe. For now, Spock, back in the good universe, will have to deal with the evil versions that have shown up they are. We are only concerned with the evil universe.

In this universe, the villagers are actually "evil". They are this universe's standard crew, and they are trying to determine if the new arrivals are their comrades from before, or mysteriosuly good-natured copies who will instead sabotage the evil crew's continuing attempts to do evil things.

Except where otherwise noted, the goal of the village is to find and eliminate the wolves. Villagers win the game when all wolves have been lynched/removed from the game.

The goal of the wolves will be to reduce the village to even numbers, so that they can take over the ship and thus find a way to return back to their own universe. The wolves will know each other's identities and will be able to PM with each other, as usual. There will be a number of possible roles in this game. The wolves will be aware of how many roles will be in the game, but not which roles are present.

The wolf role of Kirk, and the villager role of Evil Spock are guaranteed to be in the game.

There is one "game moving" deadline per day, at 9 p.m. EST/6 p.m. PDT. All actions submitted will be good up to and through the "00" minute, but count toward the next day after that. Any night/private actions can include conditionals. I reserve the right as game moderator to interpret any instructions given as I see fit, if I cannot reach a player for further clarification.

All night/private actions are due by the 9 p.m. deadline.

Additionally, the village will vote each day to throw a player in the brig, rank be damned, in its effort to uncover the wolves. The player with the most votes from the village will be thrown in the brig and removed from the game (there is no "release" from the brig in this game) at each daily deadline.

No "no lynch" votes will be accepted. In case of a tie, one player will be placed in the brig. The tiebreaker method is secret.

POSSIBLE VILLAGER ROLES

Evil Commander Spock Evil Spock is Kirk's second in command. Every night, Spock can choose to enter another player's quarters and mind meld with them to determine their identity. No player in the game will know they have been mind-melded by Spock, except for Kirk, who is so familiar with his best friend's mind that he will recognize the meld and remember it upon awaking. Spock also has the ability, one time per game, to apply a Vulcan nerve pinch on any player, incapacitating that player for a full day. This ability can be used either as a night action or at any point in the day.

Evil Ensign Chekov Evil Chekov is the ship's navigator and an ambitious young man. He is skilled with the knife and always has one on him, awaiting an opportunity to assassinate Kirk to become captain. One time in the game, Chekov may attempt to attack a player. If that player is Kirk, Chekov will not succeed in killing him--but Kirk will be revealed for who he is. If that player is not Kirk, that target will be killed. If the target is a wolf (but not Kirk), the wolf will kill Chekov at the same time. If the target is not a wolf, Chekov will be thrown in the bring and removed from the game. Chekov cannot reveal in the game, or he will lose his kill ability, as his attack relies on surprise.

Evil Lieutenant Sulu Evil Sulu, in addition to being the ship's pilot, is also skilled in martial arts and ancient weaponry. As such, he serves as security officer when he is not at his post on the ship's bridge. Every night, he may guard one player per night. If the player is protected, any action taken against the player that night--regardless of intent or the allegiance of the action taker--will not work. Sulu will be unaware of who performs an action against his protectee, but he will be aware that an attempt was made. Sulu may not protect himself, and may not protect the same player on consecutive nights.

Evil Doctor McCoy The ship doctor, Evil McCoy has the ability to keep an eye on one player per night. If that player is attacked, McCoy has a chance to save him. If McCoy succeeds, the player will be unable to participate in the game for one full day, but will not be removed from the game and will return after he/she heals. McCoy can only do this once per game. McCoy's healing powers cannot stop the target from dying if Kirk is the killer, nor can he stop Spock from dying, regardless of his attacker, due to his own ambiguity about the Vulcan. He cannot heal himself.

Evil Lieutenant Uhura The ships' communication specialist. Uhura is so persuasive a speaker and communicator that she may, one time in the game, persuade the ship's crew to throw another player in the brig.

Evil Commander Scotty The ship's chief engineer. Two times per game, he may choose to follow a player at night and observe his actions, using the personal cloak shield he has been working on in his quarters. He may not follow a player more than once. As he is a very hard worker in the day time, Scotty needs his sleep, so he cannot follow a player on consecutive nights.

Evil Lieutenant Nurse Chapel McCoy's chief assistant in the medical ward. Evil Nurse Chapel is particularly empathic and has the ability to, one time per game, look at a post in the game and determine if that player is telling the truth. This ability will not work if used on a post by either the villager or wolf role of Doctor McCoy, as, good or evil, she is convinced McCoy is an honorable man and will not believe herself if she sees he is lying and will only report he told the truth.

Evil Yeoman Janice Rand Rand has a crush on Kirk and is insanely jealous of Lieutenant Marlena Moreau, the evil Kirk's woman. Every night, Rand may investigate a player, and if that player is Marlena, she will be revealed to Rand. If Kirk is lynched, Rand will commit suicide.

Evil Lieutenant Kyle The ship's transporter engineer feels guilty about the mishap that caused the accident, and having been attacked with an Agonizer, he has become delusional and paranoid. He has convinced himself he is Evil Spock. He will have all of Spock's abilities but his reads of players will be random. He will be able to perform the Vulcan Nerve Pinch and it will work, but if he does, Evil Spock will lose his ability, as he will believe it is not a logical action to take at this time. If Kyle discovers Evil Spock's identity, he will lose all of his powers and essentially be just another Ensign Smith.

Evil Ensign Smith This is the standard ensign making up the rest of the village. Anyone following the series will know that these ensigns are particularly susceptible to dying, but have no other ability.

POSSIBLE WOLF/AMBIGUOUS ROLES

Good Captain Kirk Masquerading as the ship's captain, Kirk is the highest ranked wolf. He will remember if Spock mind melds him and McCoy cannot save a victim of Kirk's attack. With his high rank, he has access to the Evil Kirk's personnel records on the ship's crew and can search for the identity of any player in the game. He cannot kill and search on the same night. He will not be able to bring himself to kill his best friend, Spock, even the evil version.

Good Uhura Masquerading as the ships' communication specialist. Uhura is so persuasive a speaker and communicator that she may, one time in the game, persuade the ship's crew to throw another player in the brig.

Good Scotty Masquerading as the ship's chief engineer. One time per game, Scotty can sabotage the ship engines. Dealing with this emergency will take all ship's personnel, so no lynch will happen that day.

The remaining wolves will be "good" versions of the above evil roles listed in the village section, except for Spock (good Spock is not in this game). The cunning and brutal powers common to WW games may be assigned to any of them.

Evil Marlena Moreau The beautiful Marlena Moreau is the captain's woman. She will know who the wolves are to start, but they will not know her. If they attack her, she will convert to their side to help them get back to their universe. She will be able to communicate with them, but she will still count as a villager for win condition purposes.

DAILY TRIVIA DEADLINE

Every day, at 4:30 p.m. EST, an easy trivia question about Star Trek will be posted in the forum. The first PM to me with the correct answer will receive a prize. These trivia contests will not start until Day Two.

Possible prizes are a "free night of personal bodyguard", "one avoid bodyguard protect", a phaser with max setting stun, a phaser with max setting kill, a tricorder to be used to save oneself from attack, an Agonizer (evil universe tool), a Tantalus Field (evil universe tool), and so forth. Details of the prize will be announced the previous evening in the night writeup.

It is not necessary to participate in the trivia contest. The contest may be won by either wolves or villagers.

In, and expecting to become the new "default guard - N1" decision any day now. It is clearly a higher probability play now than "guard self".

By "necessary" deadline, do you mean that you have to be online for it?

The GM will reserve the second and third post in the thread. That way they can go back and edit it to out in rules, etc...

IIRC it was more focused on the newer ones with Sith lords, etc...

I'm thinking of tackling the Matrix as my next game.

I mean necessary deadline as in a regular deadline. You don't have to be present, but that's the one that drives the game, like usual WW games.

Naw, no Star Trek knowledge is needed. If you read the Mirror, Mirror Wiki link (mostly the plot), that will help a lot to understand what's going on in the story at least, but even that's not necessary. Just reading the rules & roles (when posted) should be all you need to play.

The optional midday trivia deadline (if I do that) will involve knowing Star Trek a little, but no one needs to participate in that. Plus, the questions asked will be relatively simple. They aren't regular Jeopardy hard. Think Celebrity Jeopardy.

I loved this episode of the original series, probably my favorite one. I'm in.

I will be updating the game rules and roles throughout Sunday as I watch football.

Only if he can speak in that low voice.

I am trying to write up the roles right now. I forgot how long this stuff can take, lol.

Still on schedule for roles to be sent out tomorrow evening, probably before I head to the other job, Tuesday being Day One.

I am hoping to get to 20 players. I am leaning toward keeping this one thread, one universe if I don't, as essentially, the two universe concept is a two concurrent game concept that requires balancing within each universe.

The two game concept is a fun one with a lot of potential, while the single thread, one universe game is more of a basic game. But I'm going to go with the one that is easier to balance, and right now that is the one universe concept.

If we get enough players, I'll switch out the rules for the two game concept.

You will either love it or hate it.

If you hate anything that changes the original series canon then you'll hate it.

If you love the universe and enjoy new and entertaining storylines, you will absolutely cream your jeans.

Would it be possible for both versions of a Star Trek character to be present? For example, Evil Scotty and Good Scotty? From a show perspective, I would expect the answer to be "no" but based on the limited "good" roles I am guessing the answer is "yes".

Actually, with nine good roles (not counting the ensign and not counting Marlena), that's a decent set to operate out of, IMO. Heh, heh, maybe I'll have to cook up a couple more possibilities to screw with yer mind, hoops.

There will be no duplicates (no Good and Evil Scotty in the same game). This will follow the show concept; the evil versions of the wolves are presumed to be in the good universe at the moment.

Found a use for that extra reserved post after the player list (Post #5).

Having put up rules and roles, I will note what changes I have made or clarifications that came up in this post, including the date and time.

This way, anyone reading the rules will know if the changes were added in or made before or after they originally read the rules, and give everyone one psot to look at for changes, instead of having to search the lengthy rules/roles post for the changes.

That's an excellent idea and is welcome considering I typically read over the rules multiple times during a game.
