iws #191: Results

1. Name a common phrase that includes the concept of "three" but doesn't specifically use the word or number three (i.e., may use triple, third, tres, etc., but not "three" or "3").

triple play 12
Third time's a charm 5
Triple Crown 5
triple 2
Third Base 2
Trinity 1
Triple Threat 1
Trio 1
Trifecta 1
menage a trois 1
a couple of 1
Third 1
Tres Bien 1

This one makes we think that I should have put the Yankee question last, because it might have made these other questions a bit too baseball focused. That said, the difference between winning and losing IWS can be captured by those folks who not only had the reasoning to go with baseball but also had the instincts to pick Triple Play instead of Triple or Third Base. I don't know if that can be taught. A few people took a (unintentional) hint from the intro and went Triple Crown.

I would have either gone Triple or Triple Play here.

2. Who is the third greatest Yankee of all time?

Mickey Mantle 9
Joe Dimaggio 9
Lou Gehrig 8
Derek Jeter 6
Babe Ruth 2

I liked this question a lot. I thought that there would be more 1 pointers here. I would have gone with Jeter on the theory that he's currently playing. I thought that with Rivera's injury putting him in the news, we might have gotten a couple of hits for him.

3. Who is the third greatest American President of all time?

Thomas Jefferson 9
FDR 8
George Washington 5
Reagan 4
Lincoln 2
Teddy Roosevelt 2
Roosevelt 2
Kennedy 1
Obama 1

Bit of a decision here as I had to decide what to do with the Roosevelt answers. Since it did not affect the winner, I decided to keep them as a separate entry. In my mind, the top two Presidents (for IWS purposes) are Washington and Lincoln. That made picking #3 interesting. I would have gone with my gut here and picked TR (and only gotten 3 points). I think that Mount Rushmore (and the fact that he was the actual third president) made Jefferson the best choice here.

4. Fill in the blank: Three ______.

Stooges 10
Musketeers 7
Amigos 6
blind mice 3
peat 2
Strikes 2
Strikes and you're out 1
some 1
Four 1
Little Pigs 1

The comedy group wins out over the classic French novel and Martin Short movie. I guess that makes sense. I like the spread here. I'm not sure what I would have put. I might have decided to keep the focus on baseball and picked strikes or "strikes and you're out." My favorite answer here is "Four."

5. Which movie series has the best third movie?

LOTR 16
Star Wars 12
James Bond 1
Harry Potter 1
Back to the Future 1
Die Hard 1
Indiana Jones 1
Terminator 1

Classic IWS Battle Royale here between Star Wars and LOTR. If you did not pick one of those, then you were not with stupid. I would have gone Star Wars here, but think that LOTR is the right answer.

6. Your friend is coming visit the United States for the first time. He wants to know which states are the most awesome to visit, so you make him an ordered list. Which state is third on your list?

Florida 11
California 9
Hawaii 5
New York 4
Texas 2
Alaska 2
Nevada 1

In my mind, the first two IWS answers are New York and California. Why Florida after that? I have no idea, but that's what my gut would have told me too. Kind of surprised that the Vegas contingent didn't give Nevada a bit more love.

Damn, I missed third place by only 3+3 percent.

I don't even remember some of my answers. The one I debated the most in mind was the third best Yankee. I went with Mickey Mantle, though Joe DiMaggio was my second choice, so that could have granted m more points to choose DiMaggio. The only other answer I clearly remember was "Three Stooges."

Only one other person said Teddy was the 3rd best president? Crazy!

Also... in my mind the top 3 Yankees are easily Ruth-Gehrig-Dimaggio, in some order. How did Mickey sneak in there??

Missing out on Jefferson is my biggest regret here.

I really figured that stupid would read the intro and settle in with the triple crown.

Three stooges...That never occurred to me. Doh!

Because he's better than DiMaggio.

I considered going Ruth because he wore #3 as well, but went Gehrig instead.

Great set of questions!

It's not even particularly close, IMHO. Mick obviously takes the counting stats due to DiMaggio's military service taking 3+ seasons. People often forget, though, that Mantle put together nearly 10,000 PA because of his reputation for being injured - he put up 12 years with 140+ games.

Though Mickey & Joe D finished with an identical career OPS of .977, the 50's and 60's were far less of a hitter's era than the 30's and 40's. Dimaggio's prime years in the late 30's came at a time when AL teams averaged nearly 5.5 runs/game, while Mantle was still getting a lot of AB in his decline phase in the mid-60's when that number dipped below 4.0 runs/game.

Wouldn't have won, but slamming my head for switching my answer from Jefferson to Reagan right before turning it in.

I love Mickey Mantle, I do. He's more iconic than most figures in baseball. However, Dimaggio missing years 28, 29 and 30 of his career, the usual prime for a baseball player, and then being able to come back and continue where he left off says a great deal.
