There are some fans on the board of traditional PC strategy games who do not like it or Crusader Kings, but for my money, its the best historical strategy gaming experience I've ever had, better than Civ (barely). Many others love them too, but if you want a different viewpoint, you can head to the main thread and serach for Eu3 threads.

The Irish Colonial Age: The Year of Great Change, 1545-46 - Vol. 2 - Eyes Toward The Continent

I still only have a 3.5 badboy.

I fabricate claims against Hesse

I DOW Hesse

Brabant is Hesse’s ally and they are joining her. Excellent. Two birds, one stone

July 8 - Rebels in Ottawa

July 14 - Breda fell

I annex Brabant which gives us a ton of badboy

Aug 14 - Gelre converts

Aug 17 - Grain in Allegheny

Sept 1 - Nassau falls

Sept 9 - Revolt in Oxfordshire

Sept 18 - Koln falls

Sept 20 - We get Hesse to release Mainz as a free state (which we enter into a RM with), give us Koln, revoke their core on Berg, and give us a little cash

Breda - 49267 Dutch Reform, cloth makers, 24.50 ducats, workshop, temple, completely surrounded by my provinces.

Koln - 105485, Protestant Hessian, workshop, customs house, marketplace, temple - grain, 16.73 ducats. Between Limburg and Berg, and above Liege, Luxembourg, Trier and Koblenz, and west of Nassau

I now have 100 prestige, 15.2 badboy, and a need to really spend some time and just clean up. A lot of missionaries and infrastructure is needed here and abroad.

Provinces with revolt risk above 1%:

Ontario
Ottawa
Seneca
Oneida
Mohawk
Cayuga
Onondaga
Niagara
Huron
Breda
Koln
Utrecht
Gelre
Fife
Calais
Kent
Lothian
Aberdeen
London
Oxfordshire
Hainaut

All of those actually have 3% or higher

Like Abe, I really like the EU games and they are my favorite historical games. EU3 especially. HTTT really changes a lot about how the game is played. I played through a few games with it, and am waiting for the MMP mod to come out for HTTT to see how that changes things as well. As great as EU3 is, I think a few things about it are too easy, like colonization.

The Irish Colonial Age: Post-War Expansion

Oct 1 - We win in Oxfordshire

We discover Potawatomni and Lake Ontario.

I order a fort in Ottawa

Nov 9 - Mobile now a full colony

Mobile - 2096 Irish Catholic cotton growers, 5.13 ducats, I order fort here, next to Cherokee in Tuskegee, Alabama and Pensacola. Next to us In Bayougoula. South of unknown province.

Dec 6 - Fife converts

Dec 12 - Generals Concerned by Unmanly Tactics and I lose 10 prestige rather than move us defensive

Dec 14 - White peace with Bohemia

Within the span of one year, I have won war against three nations, and annexed two of them, and added 11 provinces to our might

Post Office in Connecticut and Narraganset

Jan 2, 1547 - I send colonists to Potawatomi

Feb 9 - Post Office in Pocumtuk

Feb 22 - Slave Uprising in Cameroon. We stopped it but it gets +1 revolt risk

Mar 15 - Coffee in Guadeloupe

Apr 1 - NLD Algonquin, inland of Hochelega and east of Ottawa

Apr 16 - Slider time

I move us closer to Naval and lose some more army investment

This gives me cheaper colonist costs, more tarriff money from the colonies, cheaper ships, etc

June 9 - Rebels in Cayuga and luckily I was moving through there

What I have to do with the natives is build forts first, and then send Missionaries. Right now, any rebels can capture the province, and that stops the missionary and I have to pay to send another. The same is true of building something, so I have to keep an army in a space where a fort is being built for a year, so I can’t just build a bunch of forts all at once, but slowly. This will take a while.

I send Missionary to Koln

July 19 - Colony established in Potawatomi

Sept 1 - NLD Caddo, Inland of Bayougoula

Oct 1 - Naval Tech Increase

Oct 10 - I order a fort in Seneca

Oct 23 - Land Reform in Pocumtuk

Feb 4, 1548 - Allegheny Expands

Apr 12 - Rebels in Onandaga

June 12 - Rebels in Hainaut

July 27 - We win in Hainaut

Sept 1 - Native Attack in Narraganset

Pocumtuk is now self sustaining

Pocumtuk - I order a fort here. 1500 Irish fur trading Catholics make us 6.58 ducats. Adjacent to Mohawk, Massachusetts, Pennacook, Mahican and Kwedech

Sept 16 - Land Reform in Mahican and Narranganset

Sept 29 - Huron rebels killed

Oct 1 - Mahican is now self sustaining too

Mahican - Fort built. 1504 Irish farmers. Catholics. 5.47 ducats. Next to Massachusetts, Mohawk, Oneida, Pocumtuk, Connecticut, Manhattan, Unami, and Lenape

I order a level 1 fort in Cayuga

150 Year Review

Oct 14, 1549

Prestige - 78
Badboy - 11.8
Ducats - 283
Stability - 3

Vassals - Scotland, Auvergne, Holland, Oldenburg

Lead Personal Union with “Norway,” which is just the Orkneys.

Allies - Norway, Scotland, Auvergne, Holland, Oldenburg, Mainz

Ideas:

Military Drill
Quest for the New World
Colonial Ventures
Land of Opportunity

Feudal Monarchy

We have the most prestige
4th worst inflation at 19%
2nd highest income behind Austria by 3 ducats

I am behind the leaders in everything but government, tech wise

6th biggest army. I have around 65k, Austria has almost 200k
4th largest navy, we have 53 ships. Ming has 70, Scandinavia 59 and Japan 58

My current ruler, Muchadh, has been ruling for 31 years.

We have just five current colonies - Guadeloupe, Allegheny, Narraganset, Nunavik and Potawatomi. I need to focus on other things for a few years, so expect this number may lower

Antwerp is the second most valuable COT in the world behind Lubeck. Massachusetts is 6th behind Andalucia, Alexandra and Gorz.

Currently, the most valuable trade good is salt.

Salt
Fur
Wine
Slaves
Iron
Cloth
Fish
Grain
Wool
Coffee
Chinaware
Tobacco
Naval Supplies
Spices
Sugar
Ivory
Tea
Cotton

Provinces:

The most tax - Antwerp - 31.2. L

Antwerp
London
East Anglia
Gloucestershire
Yorkshire
Ulster
Wessex
Lancashire
Brabant
Cornwall

The most production -

Vlaanderen *
Antwerpen *
Brabant *
Zeeland
East Anglia *
Hainaut
Limburg
Yorkshire
Utrecht
Northumberland

Countries with a * have a manufactory or university

The most tariffs:

Massachusetts
Onondaga
Stadacona
Huron
Pocumtuk
Niagara
Kwedech
Unami
Abnaki
Micmac

How Many do we Have?

Fur: 20
Grain: 13
Iron: 5
Naval supplies: 7
Salt: 1
Slaves: 1
Sugar: 3
Tobacco: 9
Cloth: 10
Coffee: 2
Copper: 1
Cotton: 6
Fish: 18

It’s nice that I have a money product like fur to really corner the market in.

I don’t have any tea, spices, ivory, chinaware, wine, wool or gold. I can’t believe I don’t have any wool provinces. I usually can’t get rid of the nasty things.

I think there is way much tobacco and cotton on the map this time, and the prices for it are lowered. Plus, you need more slave provinces to really help their value. I’m not sure how many slaves are out there.

Castille is at war with two Indian nations, so again, they must be really far out there.

The new world is really just a three man race between Castille, Portugal and me. England is gone. The Netherlands probably will never form and Holland is my vassal while I own the other land. France is going through major issues for decades. Aragon colonized Cape Verde and I hope it is the beginning.

There are still a few new world provinces left in prime places, but not too many. Curacao, Jamaica, a bunch of South American coastals with low tax value.

We each have three of the islands in the Antilles. Castile has St Kitts, Martin and Antigua. Portgual has St Thomas, Lucia and Barbados. I have the other three. Castille has Trinidad and Puerto Rico. I have Cuba. Portugal has Hispaniola. I have some nearby island groups like Turks and Bahamas. Portugal has Azores, and Madeira. I have North America, they have provinces in Brazil and south, plus some more north.

Portugal has taken over almost all of Aztec. Castille has annexed African nations like Kongo, Portugal annexed Zimbabwe.

Castille has North Africa locked.

Landwise - I do not know who is ahead and who is behind. We are all doing very well.

My guess is Castille, but I took a major chunk out of that I suspect in the last few years with Huron and continental provinces

Oct 8 - Revolt in Western Isles

Dec 9 - Rebels in Huron

Jan 3, 1560 - Victoire in Huron

Feb 2 - I order level 1 forts in many of the provinces that have gone without up until now

Apr 1 - Atakapa expands. Okay, I want to put a colony in Caddo, but the natives are quite aggressive. I’ve saved up some colonists, and my plan is to blanket it with colonists until it is set up. Just one set after another.

The first leave now, and have a 78% chance of taking

Apr 17 - Huron converts

May 1 - Hungary declared free from castille

June 1 - NLD - Michigan

Sept 1 - Taqamkuk is now a core

Oct 9 - revolt in Huron

Oct 20 - Defeated

Nov 16 - RM with Brittany, Auvergne

Bohemia and the HRE passed a law and now all of my vassals are Bohemia’s. That means Holland and Oldenburg are no longer mine. So I only have one vassal left 0 Auvergne. Note that they are still my allies.

Nov 17 - France rejects our RM offer. Caddo is colonized and more are dispatched, as I said.

Now if I wanted to, I could Excommunicate DOW Bohemia. However, with their 20 vassals or so, that would be quite difficult

Dec 5 - Missionary to Taqamkuk

Dec 9 - Revolt in Onondaga

Dec 18 - Defeated

Jan 16, 1561 - We get a temporary CB against a couple of provinces in Oldenburg due to border tension

Feb 1 - Pamlico a core now

Mar 1 - Bahamas, Turks and Santeee are all now cores

Mar 15 - Rebels in Epekwitk killed, and that ends the Pretendder issue

Apr 7 - Rebels in Taqamkuk killed

May 9 - Minorities to Algonquin

Algonquin - 1729, Protestant, Irish, fur traders, 4.58 ducats, I order a fort, next to Hochelega, Ottawa, Sault, and Onatario, plus an unknown province. Religious Migration.

Dec 1 - Another insult

Jan 1, 1562 - It looks like Hesse, as I inspect it, has left the HRE at some point in time, because hey are not a vassal of Bohemia. Good for you Hesse. I have no designs on your remaining provinces, so you’re good.

Note that Austria did become a vassal of Bohemia. That’s gotta be odd

Jan 25 - Bohemia Defender of Faith

Feb 10 Caddo expands

We finished our mission in Yorkshire and a get a new one to build a weapons Manufactory this time in Ayrshire, Maybe

Wow, there is a five star Banker out there I could hire, and it would give me -55% interest, that would be awesome. The other way to do it is to build Tax Assessors when you get 31 government. I currently have 18. That might be a while.

As long as Austria is Defender of the Protestant Faith, oddly, then I will nto risk a war with France to bring them in. My CB on France ends July 1, but I will let it expire.

May 3 - Caddo expands

June 2 - Portugal screwed up, possibly. They DOW’d Meissen. Noiw the entire HRE and all of the vassals are coming after Portugal

I have an alliance CB against Portugal because my allies are at war with them.

July 1 -

Choctaw - 2004 Irish Catholics, tobacco, 2.46 ducats, fort, next to two Cherokee provinces in Chichasaw and Tuskegeee, north of Mobile, Bayougoula, east of Caddo

Oct 8 - I have managed to convince the Cherokee to open their market to me, and I send merchants to their COT in Chickasaw. I can monopoly it, and the Cherokee only have one merchant there, so despite the fact that it only gets 120 ducats in trade, I may have the lion’s share of that very soon

Dec 13 - Caddo expands

Dec 24 -

Atakapa - I order a fort here. 2091 Irish Catholic farmers make us 2.72 ducats. East of Castille in Karankawa, west of us in Caddo and Chitimacha, and south of inland provinces(s) unknown

I feel like I am approaching the end of this dynasty. I know I’m not even 200 years in, but what is left? I haven’t had a large badboy in forever, I have the isles to myself, I have a nice chunk of continental real estate, I have almost every open province in Canada and the US other than Florida and south Texas, I’ve already colonized into the mid-west and Michigan, and up through Arkansas. I have Cuba, three Antilles islands, Turks, Bahamas, and Bermuda, plus The Canarias and Cameroon. How much longer before I’ve united my growing colony up the Mississippi river and the one in the Midwest? How much longer before I’ve colonized the west coast? that’s all I’m doing, colonizing. I haven’t waged war against Europe for new land at all. I’ve already bent the original rules of the dynasty to grab land in the lowlands and a bit in Germany, how much farther do I push? I’ve already met all of my goals.

I started Songhai with one goal - Unify Africa. I also took Mecca and the land path to it, like I though a Sunni state would want. After that, I was done, and I set the dynasty down. I started this dynasty with the desire to unite Ireland, take Britain, and colonize Canada and the US. No one can stop my colonization. We are so deep inland that no other power can stop us.

I have never taken Land of Opportunity before as my Idea, nor have I ever had a Estates General advisor (the colony grower) so I got a chance t o do some new things.

The new expansion does add a lot. The HRE stuff is awesome, so much so that I am tempted to try out an HRE power next time. One more edict and the HRE would have stopped being vassals and all been one country. Awesome. Magistrates and what they add are great. I absolutely adore cultural tradition and being able to choose your advisors, just like you can make generals, admirals, explores and conquistadors. I love the idea of an heir and legitimacy. Having visible badboy was great too. I think the expansion was a good one.

Each expansion really added a lot to EU3, no doubt. Decisions, additional spy options, missions and such have made the game much better.

What would I want to see in EU4?

The ability to do stuff with Wasteland provinces, like move across them with armies at a massive attrition, or the ability to make them settle-able with some serious financial input, etc. Make them small provinces and more realistic. There is no reason that jungles throughout Africa are very settle able, but inner Jungles are not. Many deserts are provinces, but some aren’t Many mountains are settle-able,m but a few aren’t. EU has always given you the historically used provinces, but there is no reason tot think that places like Montana and Idaho, or Quebec, couldn’t be settled. I rather have the choice, I don’t like being told I can’t do something.

I would like to see some diplomacy changes. I love diplomacy in this game, but sometimes weird stuff happens to your relations with another country, and you don’t know why. Within my first year at Barrois, some of the countries in the HRE with whom I began the game with good relations would invariably have severe relations in every time I tried to play it. My relations with Castille went from 140 to -40 in this game, and I could not tell you why. They should add a historical screen for each country you can click on to document all of the diplomatic changes that were made.

In EU2, economic products were always the same value. Chinaware was always uber-valuable, with Spices and Sugar quite high as well. In EU3, with the random product to a province, sometimes you get unrealistic products. There is no way you are getting cotton in the mountains, for example. You can’t get iron in the Applachian mountain chain, for example. Why not? Why not add Naval Supplies as one of the options in Jungle colonies, (in real life jungle colonies were often used to timber for boats)? In this game, they are too fickle. They need to hit a medium. Chinaware, with established trade to Europe, should always be the most valuable good. So should spices. Wars were fought over the spice trade. The entire exploration and colonial effort was started simply to break Venice’s hold on the spice trade. Spies were so valuable, that they drove diplomacy, war, and exploration for centuries. In the game, they should not be less valuable than things like Copper and Wine. If you have a spice province in the Caribbean, that is money on trees literally. Salt, Spices, Chinaware - some products should always be near the top of the food chain.

And some should always be near the bottom. Naval supplies, grain, fish, wool - these should always be chump provinces, although sometimes in EU3, you get a weird economy like I had where grain is more valuable than cotton, tobacco, etc. These provinces instead should have other abilities. Grain provinces should give you better manpower (they do), naval supplies should help with building or upkeeping ships, etc.

I want you to be able to have a decision that changes a province’s good. This happened a lot in real life. Bermuda went from naval supplies (lumber) to tobacco. One of the Caribbean colonies whose name escapes me moved to spices after they were imported from Asia. Trinidad went from sugar to cocoa. Antigua went from tobacco to sugar. This happened in real life. Besides, shouldn’t you be able to move from cotton to grain or from tobacco to grain with little trouble?

I want to see dyes, wax, whales, New World foods, pearls and silver mines. Perhaps even cocoa and rubber. Take Socotra, for example. Socotra was quite valuable in real life, because only on it could you find the sap, Dragon’s Blood, which was used as a dye. But, in EU, there are no dyes, so how do you value the province? You Can’t give it spice, that’s over-egging it. What do you do? It would be nice if, after years of playing with the same 20, we get a few new things to play with. Especially since many are localized to certain regions of the world, like slaves or tobacco, tea or chinaware. Another example is Margarita, which had a strong pearl farming economy, so powerful, that the Spanish began to raid Trinidad as slaves for its operation in 1511.

I’ve mentioned in the Songhai dynasty the surrealness of an empire that had so many slave provinces. Could you imagine Rome selling off its citizens as slaves to the Germanic Tribes for profit? That needs to be fixed.

For colonies, in EU2, you could build a colony or a trading post, but the Trading Post idea is gone. Why? I like it. I would like to see it return along with two new options. In addition to building colonies or posts, what if you could build a fort there, or a Mission there. The mission would take a missionary and try to convert without you being there, but you would fund it like other missionaries. You could claim an area with a Fort and some soldiers to gaud it, and then colonize later. Make that take up some manpower or something, and not a colonist. Then you can move sliders into and out of the province without always having to face natives.

I also think there should be an economic advantage to having a majority of the provinces that make something. It you have 8 of the 10 tea province in the world, there should be some extra bonuses.

Loved the dynasty Abe. Very engaging. I'm gonna fire up EU3 and give it another whirl. I used to play EU1 all the time when it came out, EU2 kind of burnt me out, and EU3 has barely gotten any play from me. Time to fix that, I think.

EU Rome is a different game and many do not like it.

EU3 has these expansions:

Napoleon's ambition
In Nomine
Heir to the Throne

I think complete has the first two.

Right, EU3: Complete only has the first two expansions. They didn't intend to make a 3rd expansion, but I'm glad they did. EU: Rome is a different game. The original game was basic and "bleh", but the expansion did add a lot to it and I liked it after that. Still plenty of minor complaints, though. I was thinking of diving into modding it to see what I could do with it. I enjoy EU: Rome + the expansion, but EU3 + the three expansions is much, much better.
