I'm holding you responsible for my PS3 not playing any games while PSN is having issues. Fix it!

Dola
I've also heard rumblings about potential lost/corrupted saved data when/if you receive an error message trying to connect...I would double check.

That and it cost me about $75 to get one whereas you can get a cheap NES for $10

I got mine for about $25. Next time the guy who sold it to me had one, he was selling it for $80.
I didn't realize they were worth that much when I bought mine. |

I have a "fat" 80 GB model that has been, and still is working fine. I wonder why I fell into the "some fat models have worked ok" category. Oh well, good for me. Hopefully I get that early copy of The Show 10

Well, the 80 GB model is a different model number. Different hard drive size, obviously, but different guts, too - it lacks the Emotion Engine. So it's possible that something else in the 80 GB production run was changed that kept the flaw from hitting you. My bet? the 60s and possibly 20s are the only ones suffering among the "fat" models. |

I have also the 80Gb model and the date is correct for me too.
The bug is related to old models clock miscalculating a leap year, so it couldn't advance from Feb 28th to March 1st. Sony has said in their twitter that they are working on it now, i guess a new firmware will be released asap, but yeah, not the best PR thing for Sony, i guess some heads will be cut after a massive bug like this. Y2k bug is back!!!

I still remember Dec 31, 1999. Sat in an office for hours waiting for a tsunami of system errors that never happened. Ah well. At least the pizza was good.

ha yeaaaa mine thinks its 6pmish december 31. Didn't bother to check the year. Ah well, if it is back up and running fine tonight, I am still very happy that my 60gb launch hasn't had any problems up until now.

So if it's fixed in the slim model, they must have known about it beforehand right...?
I got the error (I have the 80GB hardware backwards compatible one). If I can't play Battlefield tomorrow, I will not be very happy with Sony. |

I believe the firmware varies slightly between the models because the hardware inside each one isn't exactly the same. Given the symptoms, I'm guessing they made a goof in the firmware on one model and it was done correctly on other models. |

How long has the PS3 issue been going on? I played Heavy Rain yesterday with no issues so am I safe?

Yeah the only word I see from Sony right now is to wait 24 hours. If I can't play Bad Company 2 tomorrow, it's a sign I should just quit console games. I have never bought a console FPS, and actually had fun with the BC2 demo. So much fun that I pre-ordered it and was floored by the $80 price tag after taxes. If I can't play it on launch, my relationship with consoles is done.

Right, because PC's never have issues, and PC gaming is always bug free. Build me a $300 rig that can play every single game on the market and is so reliable that when there is one bug reported in the system (that supposedly has a 24 hour shelf life) everybody is shocked, and that will also be considered top of the line for 3-4 years.

Save your rolleyes for someone else, I rarely play any computer games right now either and really the only time I play any video games is if it's some kind of multi-player thing, and I could care less about the console vs PC debates. I find video games less and less enjoyable, except for some reason I found Bad Company 2 fun with friends (and not against random people). If the PS3 has some stupid bug the day of release for the first game I've pre-ordered in years... that's a sign to me that I'm pretty much done with gaming. That's all I'm saying ("console" should be taken out from my post). |

Given that it's happening to quite a few people, I'm sure they're taking that into consideration. Just speculation, but I'm guessing they could implement a server patch that would allow those consoles to connect with the bad date and then send a patch to correct the issue. |

You can deliver firmware updates via a USB flash drive. It's how I used to update my PS3 when there was a new firmware update, since downloading via wireless took all month, practically. Download it via PC, transfer it to USB, install from there. |

I would guess that would be a last ditch effort. They'll want to do a server side patch if at all possible. Otherwise, you have the issue of communicating the fix to people so they can do it manually. That just sounds like a nightmare. |

I guess that depends on whether the bug is locking down all network activity with the PS3 or just the PSN connectivity. I haven't clicked on 'network update' to see if it tries to do anything. If it can't connect to look for firmware, the option I listed would be pretty much the only one. |

Since I heard earlier that Heavy Rain is unplayable for some people because of this, I am glad I finished it yesterday. My guess is if you don't have auto PSN sign-in turned on you would be ok, but I don't know just a guess. I have it turned on, so I am not turning on my PS3 for a day or so.

Interesting, I never look at my control panel, but given that I have an original 60 GB (launch) unit, I'm guessing I'm hosed.
I'm sad that all I really do on my PS3 is watch DVD's. I even pre-ordered Final Fantasy XIII for 360. I just don't enjoy playing games on my PS3. Sad, last generation I definitely would have been labeled a Sony Fangirl. /tk

I normally wouldn't care about this, but my buddies and I play FIFA on PS3. We tried getting our usual 2 on 2 (all in person) game going last night but couldn't, and it infuriated me.
In all honesty, a network problem causing a system to not even allow you to play offline games is the stupidest fucking thing I've heard in my entire life, and I spend my days talking to bankers. Last edited by Logan : 03-01-2010 at 05:46 PM. |

Yeah, working here now, although the clock was set to 2/28. I had to do an update-via-Internet on the time to get the correct date.

Oh this is (potentially) glorious. I'm needing a fix of the new Borderlands DLC something fierce.
Here's hoping my character didn't get deleted somehow with these issues.

Server-side patch, as I had thought. The fix they did for date correction was relatively easy. I'm guessing it just took awhile because they wanted to make sure they didn't screw something else up in the process.

ROFL. Nah. System clock was bugged. Not the one you see when you turn on the console (although that was an artifact of the issue), but the hardware clock. That's why they said "We hope to have a fix in 24 hours." Waiting for the system to stop choking on "Feb 29, 2010." I had my PS3 disconnected from the network after the issue first popped up, and it still fixed itself after 24 hours. Patch had nothing to do with it. |
