SkyDog Takes The One And Done Challenge

PHASE ONE: INTERVIEWS
I got lucky here. The second guy I interviewed at QB, Peter Briggs, came out Underrated. I was able to save QB interviews that way.

PHASE TWO: TRADES
I started out listing them all, but they got too numerous. You'll see what picks I have when you see my draftees. On to the draft.

Rnd 1 - Peter Briggs, QB, North Carolina
Rnd 1 - Sammie Newman, WR, North Carolina
Rnd 1 - Bernard Delgado, CB, Indiana
Rnd 2 - O.J. Winters, RB, Idaho
Rnd 2 - Jerry Reeves, WR, Boston College
Rnd 2 - Vince Schmidgall, DE, Alabama
Rnd 2 - Sammie Carr, DT, Wake Forest
Rnd 3 - Wes Middleton, TE, North Carolina State
Rnd 4 - Cedric Garrard, DT, Boston College
Rnd 6 - Jim Sheldon, G, Virginia Tech
Rnd 7 - Harvey Halama, C, Florida State

I saw two great, fast, underrated WRs, so I decided they'd be perfect matches for Briggs, which in turn led me to go heavy on offensive skill positions early. I figured I'd just try doing what I do best here.

Obviously, lots of undrafted free agents signed. Here's the report from our first camp. Lots of the guys who lost points will be replaced with 1st-year FAs who gained 'em.

I guess overall, the prevailing strategy was to grab as many suspected creepers as I could, and give them playing time. The 1st-year starting lineups reflect that.

Briggs looks like a star in the making. I just hope he can stay healthy. Mirer has a similar skill set and gave a mild creep, so that combination puts him in firmly as the #2.

O.J. Winters RB 38 38 44 49 6 11
Jose Greene RB 24 28 26 30 2 2
Trevor McElrath RB 27 41 27 37 0 -4 up to 15/36 as a WR.
Ken Kelly FB 18 37 22 36 4 -1
Winters=star. He has only E positional experience, and his all-too-similar bars at three places make me wonder if he's a Dusty Ford/Swamp Thing Johnson heavy unmasker.

Wes Middleton TE 23 44 28 49 5 5
Kendall Garvin TE 19 25 21 28 2 3
Johnnie Worthington TE 24 44 27 41 3 -3

Preston Turnbull SE 14 19 17 24 3 5
Glenn Stevenson SE 15 29 18 30 3 1
Our QB/receiver combo should be very, very good in a few years. I expect serious creeping from the starters at TE/WR, probably into the 60s for Middleton, and somewhere in the 70s for both starting WRs. Dagostino climbed to 15/36 as a WR in the position switch, so he could be a factor one day, too.

Alex Pfaff RT 12 31 14 32 2 1
Dusty Drayson LT 18 41 22 41 4 0
This is where misunderstanding the rules could get me in trouble. My plan was to grab the nearest creeping rookie FAs after camp to be my fourth G and fourth T. I only carried 60 into camp, so I had plenty of room for more. I kept extra defensive linemen for switching over if necessary.

Brady Roberson P 41 51 42 49 1 -2
Joel Bass K 41 64 42 58 1 -6
Another place where I'd planned on grabbing the best postcamp creeping rookie FAs, so I didn't really pay attention to the guys I got here. Oh well.

Daniel Wilkins LDE 16 28 17 30 1 2

Darrell Brody LDT 29 53 31 48 2 -5
Cedric Garrard RDT 25 50 30 50 5 0
After the creeping is done, we should be pretty solid up front. Turnbull is high in PR technique, and will play LDE in nickel/dime sets for now.

J.T. Mills MLB 13 22 14 23 1 1
Brenden Godfrey MLB 16 30 18 30 2 0

Johnnie Rayburn SLB 13 32 14 28 1 -4
Brandon Beyer WLB 22 35 25 32 3 -3
I'm most concerned about this position group, in terms of talent. I didn't draft anyone, and my FA pickups were pretty haphazard, too.

Joel Pancake LCB 15 19 18 23 3 4
Korey Gottschalk LCB 16 22 19 25 3 3
Bernard Delgado LCB 66 70 71 71 5 1
Roosevelt Sherman LCB 23 35 25 36 2 1
Lance Zitnik LCB 18 29 20 29 2 0

Ron Moeller FS 10 24 13 28 3 4
Mel Grier FS 20 43 21 38 1 -5
Kerry Andersen FS 23 47 25 41 2 -6
Trevor Gomez SS 12 39 15 41 3 2
Delgado looks to be a stud in the making, and the other creeping should make this group above average fairly soon.

OVERALL: Obviously we've got a few years until we're competitive, but I like our roster, especially the offense. I'll be using an offensive philosophy that I call "The Lowcountry Shuffle." It's a mixture of the "West Coast" and "Play Action Vertical Passing" philosophies that I made public. It makes heavy use of the Adjustments screen to move between the two philosophies at various points of the game. I had a lot of fun working out the mathematics for this. Depending on how the game plays out, you could see nearly 100% usage of one philosophy or the other, or you could see the team switch philosophies multiple times during the same game.

Year 1 Summary

Things went better than I would have guessed, especially considering that O.J. Winters missed most of three games with an injury. we had some nice development, including CB Delgado going up to 81/81, and QB Briggs getting up to 40/48. The longest injury was a 6-weeker to backup TE Garvin, so no worries on that front yet.

SE Jerry Reeves goes to summer league, six he only gained six current points last year despite participating in around 750 plays.

I show him the money, of course, since I have lots of it.

It's just preseason, but 4-0 and outscoring opponents 119-54 gives me a bit of cause for optimism for 2009.

Year 2 Summary

Maybe I went a little offense-heavy in the draft.

Seriously, I'm just hoping that the rising of the defensive cohesion will get us somewhere in the mediocre range there to enable us to win a title or two. Briggs and those two gazelles should be able to do the rest.

AWARDS
MVP: Briggs
OPOY: Briggs
1st Team QB: Briggs
1st Team WR: Newman

2010 Offseason.

Biggest early news is that O.J. Winters has continued to creep like mad, and probably is a Dusty Ford/Swamp Thing kind of player. He's up to 71/71 after FA1, that's +33 overall. Now if he can just stay healthy for an entire year (missed all or part of 9 games in his first two years)...

I definitely hit the jackpot on the QB/RB/TE/WR/WR group. As a whole, they were +29 in FA1 this year. As of FA1:1, they are:

QB Briggs, 1(3), 23/43-->54/54
RB Winters, 2(1), 38/38-->71/71
TE Middleton, 3(1), 23/44-->55/55
WR Newman, 1(9),31/51-->62/62
WR Reeves, 2(5), 24/45-->61/61

Turf will be upgraded for the 2013 season. That should help with injuries. I've also hired a H.C. who is Excellent in avoiding injuries, and bumped up the training room time a bit.

Briggs gained 2 more formations (up to 14 now) in training camp, with 22 intelligence. The backups also look pretty close to their capacities, so I'll scale back on playbook the rest of the way and get some extra help in other areas, especially injuries.

No significant gains in 2010TC (none that were > +2), but two big losses for backup WRs Chad Turnbull (now 11/16) and Grant Dagostino (now 16/26). Keeping the two starters healthy is going to become absolutely critical to success here, it appears. Big misses on Turnbull and Dagostino for me.

First longer injury, and it's at my position group of least depth: RT Clyde Powell gets a broken foot (O10) in the last week of preseason.

Year 3 Summary

The defense improved quite a bit, I presume due to cohesion improving. (We're now up to 95-92-93-90 there.) We won the exact same awards as last season:

AWARDS
MVP: Briggs
OPOY: Briggs
1st Team QB: Briggs
1st Team WR: Newman

At the end of the year, only one potential carry-over injury, but it could be important:

Quote:
Vince Schmidgall, RDE - Strained Hamstring, Questionable, return to full strength unknown.

Schmidgall has recovered from his hamstring injury

FA1 CREEPING
  • Winters gives another +4. Up to 75/75 now. Yowza!
  • No one else gained more than 2 points.
  • FB Kelly lost 3 points down to 30/30.
  • No one else lost more than 1 point.
Looks like most of the team is getting very close to the most unmasking I'll see. My plan is to do a full report after training camp of year 6.

TRAINING CAMP
  • Seemingly-random small veteran increases to FS Kerry Anderson (27/27-->33/33) and RCB Adrian Collier (25/25-->28/28) should help the secondary a little.
  • Another -9 for WR Grant Dagostino. He's now 12/17, and my #1 choice when I have to position switch to keep a legal roster.

Stadium Renovation is complete. Everything's "Excellent" now. Should be helpful with injuries.

FA1 CREEPING

Once again, no one changes more than +/- two points, but it's worth noting that O.J. Winters was one of the +2 guys. He now sits at 78/78, or +40 since he was drafted.

Quote:
From: Zack Swift

I have decided to hold out until I receive a new contract.

I believe I made a huge difference on defense last season. I believe I'm very seriously underpaid, and will not report to camp without a new contract.
Heh. He's been starting for five years, finally gets more than 75 tackles (88), and wants a pay raise for it. The gall. This clown has started at MLB every season, and doesn't even lead the team in tackles.

TRAINING CAMP

Aging is starting to kick in now. 11 guys lost 3 points or more. We also have one minor veteran boom in LCB Roosevelt Sherman: 33/33-->39/39. Biggest hit is to RB Winters. He's down to 69/69.

Year 6 Summary

We were *VERY* injury-free this year in our new digs. We actually entered the postseason with zero injuries. The cohesion seems to be really helping the defense. It's certainly not ratings or game plan that's causing it. I have made slight 1st and 10 changes for defense for postseason games only, based on whether I perceive the opponent to be more of a threat passing or running, but nothing dramatic. The swing has been between 40 and 55% run expectation on 1st and 10, with zero other changes. (On offense, I've used nothing but the Lowcountry Shuffle since preseason game one of this challenge.)

AWARDS
  • QB Briggs gets the full quad-fecta.
  • Schmidgall, 1st Team DE (third straight year)
  • Reeves, 2nd Team WR
  • Sammie Carr, 2nd Team DT

2013 Offseason

DE Henry Turnbull retires. Not a good idea to give a guy 10+ starts for four consecutive seasons, then relegate him to only 89 plays in 2013. Oops. I have a strong suspicion this retirement was very avoidable.

No significant creeping in either direction in FA1...

TRAINING CAMP
Definite aging now. 16 guys lose 3 points or more.

The dominos may begin to fall now. After the retirement, I got hit with some DL injuries in preseason. The upshot is that in order to stay legal, I'm forced to play DT Garrard with a strained hamstring and a High risk of re-injury, for possibly as many as seven weeks (when the "Out" guy returns.) If Garrard gets re-injured, I will have to position-switch someone, probably a linebacker.

CB Joel Pancake ruptures his Achilles' Tendon around midseason. That could be another retirement.

And then later this season, we get hit with LB injuries, and end up position-switching S Grier.

Injuries all over the place this season led to us having three 1000-yard receivers, and with a little luck, all that divided-up playing time might help us with retirements. Dominant team. Too bad we couldn't do it in the postseason.

Injuries all over the place, and I needed to play several guys who sucked to keep them happy. Missed the playoffs.

I had to play Mirer some, as he was getting Angry. Didn't want him to jump ship and retire. If I hadn't, it's possible that Griggs would have had thrown 50 TDs.

Oh well. Lost two guys to injury in the preseason, putting me at 43 and unable to continue.

.600 winning percentage = 60 points
96 wins = 96 points
5 conference titles = 10 points
4 championships = 8 points
TOTAL=174 points.

As I posted elsewhere, the docs are wrong about hte positional requirements. I played 11 more games before I was truly done, so updated score is:

.590 winning percentage = 59 points
101 wins = 101 points
5 conference titles = 10 points
4 championships = 8 points
TOTAL=178 points.

Quite honestly, I got a bit lucky with Winters. I was pretty sure he'd be a very good player, but he wasn't really on my target list, either. But when he fell to 2(1), he became a "best player available" pick. I just didn't think he'd be THAT good. If I had, I would have grabbed him with one of the top 10 picks I had.

As far as the QB situation, I did identify Briggs as a top QB, and that made a *huge* difference. He was a lot better than any of the others. I talked with Quik some this afternoon, and he said that Briggs was very good on an AI team in his career, too. It's not terribly difficult to do well with a top-tier QB, two very good WRs, and a top-tier RB.

Sky, I picked up Winters at like 1.28 IIRC, same experience. I really think that 10 point drop you had with him was random bust/injury though, and not aging. He stayed healthy on my team and when my career died in 2017 he was still mid 60s. Absolute monster.

I played GSOT offense, and he put up like 14-1600/6-900 every year, with atleast 15 combined touchdowns.
