Dashiell Spivey, be prepared to be the most dominating player on the PCL's worst team. I'd like to have some words of hope, but i can't see any right now.

Rod Lockheart was the most frustrating created player for me to watch this spring. In his 8 spring starts, only 3 were as dominting as I though he could be. Thankfully for Rod, the last 14 IP (0 R, 0.71 WHIP) were what was expected from him, so that bodes well for the future.

If his season long performance is more in line with the last 1/4 than the first 3/4, he will be a valued bench performer. The biggest worry for Rabbit should be the weakness at first base for the Cowboys. If a trade is made before Donovan can establish himself as the top back up infielder, he'll probably be sent to AAA. He has to start strong. Keep your eyes now on the Roster thread. I'll soon be posting the Opening Day rosters, line ups, pitching staffs and some general comments about the squads.

Winston Lafayette will open the season as the relief ace of the A's. He didn't lose the 4th rotation spot by much, so there is a good chance he'll move into the rotation at some point in the season. Right now, all the important late innings will be yours.

One of our mulitiple player teams; both players made the team, here are their roles.
Graham Walker will start the year as Lloyd Waner's back up in centerfield and the number 2 or 3 option for pinch hitting. It doesn't look like a whole lot of AB at this point. Probably would have been better served at AAA, but the Bison are throwing all the kids into the fire. If he can make the best of the chances he gets he'll get more playing time. Achilles Brown barely made the staff, but Jewel Ens shows confidence in the young hurler. Achilles will be the No. 2 guy out of the bullpen. There is still a gap between Brown and making the rotation. It can be done, but a bad inning could be a huge setback--depending on how many innings he throws. Not the best situation, but not the worst situation either.

Owen Hunter is the number 2 prospect for the Clippers and will start the year in the rotation at AA Providence. As the Clips figure to move some of their veterans for prospects; a major league appearance is not out of the question for this season.

Wally Klukas will start his career with the Class A Troy (AL) Trojans, batting 3rd and playing short. The Millers are moving Miranda over the second. Klukas is the Number 1 prospect of the Millers.

Maximus Meridius will hit number 4 in the order and be one of the best offensive players in PCL. I really think he could win the MVP, if enough guys get on in front of him.
Harley Gathers will be getting on base alot for Meridius--but may drive in more runs. One of the top hitters in baseball, may split the MVP vote with Meridius. Vince Cressio is starting the season as the number 1 back up at short. Maybe 1 game a week at this point. Great group of veterans to play with.

Rabbit Donovan starts the year as the number 1 backup at short. He will probably get some games at second as well. But Rabbit is in probably the hardest situation for any of our major league roster players. The guy who is the everyday shortstop is the number 8 prospect in the organization, Rabbit is number 1. Both are good players, Clem is closer to his peaks right now; Rabbit has the long term upside. The problem with having just kids to deal is usually teams in the pennant chase don't like to deal for kids. They'll do it in the off-season, but not in-season. Phoenix, like Minneapolis with Klukas/Miranda, has to decided do they keep both Donovan and Koshorek or move one for pitching? Probably won't find out until the off-season.

Charlie Denton will hit 3rd in a potentially potent Portland offense. With Parnell Woods hitting 2, Denton will be hitting with men on alot. If Newsome gets on consistnetly, Denton should pass 100 runs and 100 RBI.
Jimmy Fitzpatrick will get all the RBI that Denton doesn't get. He has good protection in the 5 spot, so this clean up hitter will clean up. Will challenge Meridius of Hollywood for the top slugger of the PCL.

Anton Gogolak had a very unpleasant end to his spring, going into a 4-34 slump over the last weeks. It could have been worse, he was 1-29 before a couple pinch hits. All in all, he did have a good spring, starting very hot. He will bat 5th versus right handers and 3rd against lefties. I think the 3rd slot might be too high, as he struggled against lefties. There really isn't the depth here for anyone to challenge his spot, so I don't think there is danger of him losing the job. Should be a key bat for a pennant contender.

Dashiell Spivey will have an MVP type season for probably the worst club in baseball. Hitting third, he is the most important cog in the offense. If he is hitting, they have a chance to win the game. Overall the RBI and Run number will be lower than expected because the terrible offense surrounding him. Could be moved for "major league ready" kids.

Rod Lockheart starts off as the #2 starter, behind Eddie Lopat. It tells you something about how good he is when I thought he underperformed and ends up the number 2. Could be frustrating season depending on how good the offense turns out to be. Needs to get off to a quick start. The staff is so deep, an early slip could result into a trip to the bullpen, which may be hard to get out of.

Josephus Bricker will play for the Kansas City Monarchs. His major league rights are owed by the Phoenix Cowboys. If Big Joey can draw a walk or two, a real problem for him in the tryout camp, I can see Joey playing in the PCL this season.

Good to hear that both Lockheart and Cressio made the team. Sad that Cressio's not the starter, but worse things could have happened.

Cressio came into the game as a pinch hitter for Allie Clark in the 7th. He didn't get a chance to swing as Mike Kreevich was picked off to end the inning. Cressio stayed in the game and lead off the 8th, failing to get on base.

I brought in Winston trying to keep the game close and for 6 batters he was doing the job. Reiser's homer didn't mean much in terms of the outcome, but I would have liked Winston to get out unharmed. He'll have to have a good string of outings to stay in the hunt for a rotation job.

Graham Walker collected a 9th inning pinch-hit single in his first appearance. Lloyd Waner, who Graham is backing up, hit two doubles however, showing he is not yet ready to call it quits. Minneapolis Millers Wally Klukas went 3-4 in his first game with the Troy Trojans. Phoenix Cowboys. Rabbit Donovan flew out to center in his pinch-hit appearance. Salt Lake City Saints Dashiell Spivey went 0-4 in his first game. If he could have gotten a hit or two, Harry Brecheen's great performance might not have been wasted. Portland Beavers Charlie Denton had a nice little game, 1-3, with a run, walk and a stolen base. He also had two strikeouts, which isn't as good, but opening day jitters (or the rain) may have played into that. Jimmy Fitzpatrick did what he was supposed to do, 2-4, a run and RBI. I expect monster seasons from both of these players. Sacramento Salons Anton Gogolak was part of a very balanced and even attack by the Salons on opening day. 1-4 and run and RBI.

Achillies Brown came in after the horse was gone but did his job. With two runners on and the Blues threatening to extend the lead even further, Brown got a strike out and fly ball to end the inning. He was removed for a pinch hitter in the next half inning. San Diego Padres Rod Lockheart pitched a good game but showed some problems late in the outing. In the 6th, Lockheart walked two men, though he did not give up a run. In the 7th, a lead off single was followed by a home run from left-handed Aaron Robinson. Rod will have a lot of loses like this during the season. Negro League Joey Bricker made his first start for the Monarchs, going 0-4 with 2 strikeouts.

Something for Grandpa to worry about (see roster thread for complete list) is of the 9 Negro Leaguers Minneapolis holds the service rights to, 5 are infielders. Only one (31 year old Bus Clarkson) is the only shortstop, still, it isn't like the Millers are short on shortstop prospects. BTW, Wally Klukas is rated the 6th best prospect in all of baseball!

Baltimore Athletics: Winston Lafayette
Code:
Winston had a very rough first week in the majors, he was trusted with two leads and lost them both. His second week was the type of pitching Ruth was hopeing for. His problem is not the number of hits, but how many are for extra bases. Four of seven have been at least a double. Thankfully the control has been impecible and has limited the damage. But I will tell you this--Ruth likes Lafayette and I would not be surprised if Winston is in the rotation. The starters have been wild and that has made for a real fight for a club with little power. Those first two outings can be written off as jitters. We know he can get outs, but can he limit the extra base hits? That will be the question when the move happens.

Columbus Clippers: Owen Hunter #48 Prospect
Has not appeared in a game for the AA Providence Chiefs. Was traded from Columbus with Martin Dihigo and Dan Bankhead to the Brooklyn Dodgers. He has been assigned to AA Mobile Bears where he is made the number one starter. This is the #3 pitching prospect in baseball, and the Clippers wouldn't pitch him. Now Ralph Branca will be a good pitcher, but Hunter will be better longer I think.

Buffalo Bison: Walker and Brown
Code:
Our young centerfielder has been put in a difficult spot to learn about major league pitching: he has been anoited the Bison's number 1 pinch hitter. He has hit .250 in that role, which is decent for a rookie pinch hitter. Lloyd Waner has been struggling as the starting centerfielder. I don't think Waner will get better, he can only worse at this point. If Walker can sneak in a few more hits he will be the starter. The performance of fellow rookies Chuck Harmon and Gus Zernial will make it easier for the club to push aside Waner somewhat greatful. Code:

Hollywood Stars: Meridus, Gathers and Cressio
Code:
After starting the year in a 4-24 slump, Max is finding his groove as a hitter. However, there are signs he still has a way to go before really showing how potent his bat can be. In an effort to be a 'patient' hitter, he has been hitting behind in the count consistantly. The walks are great but this era does not look to kindly on the high strike out rate. The limited evidence shows that when Max is aggressive in the box, the hits go up and the strike outs go down. The Stars would like to see more run production from the presumed PCL MVP. There isn't a lot of competition for the starting role, so it will take injury or 'falling off the cliff type slump' to pull Max to the bench. Code:
Hog has been Mr. Automatic for the Stars. Getting the hits to continue an inning or drive in the run; he has been super consistant. With Meridus starting to find his groove, Harley should start scoring lots of runs. His power has been of the doubles variety; I like that thinking from the third slots. What I don't like is the lack of walks. Granted he has been making contact--lots of contact--he is not going to hit .400 for the season. Harley is the early team leader in several catagories. It has to be frustrating for these two to know they are performing at high levels while the rest of the offense stagnates. They need another bat or two to help the Stars out. Code:
Could one of those bats be on the team already? Vince lost the starting job in spring training more than Red Barkley won it. And two weeks into the season, Cressio is on the brink of winning the job back. The fans are taking a shine to the kid. Just like Minnie Minoso out east, when Vince enters the game, something is about to happen. Something good is about to happen. Everything this team has asked of the young shortstop he has done. With his spark for a full game might help pull the pre-season favorite Stars pull out of fifth and back into a fight for the PCL title.

Grandpa Wally has been haveing trouble at the plate ever since his debut. On the plus side, noone else in the organization is hitting either. Miranda is getting a look in centerfield, effectivley eliminating him as a competitor for the future SS job. Tod Davis at AA Sherbrooke is not doing anything either. Scouts are still high on Wally, so once he gets his swing down should cruise through the organization.

It is hard to get a read on how well Rabbit is doing. Good job pinch hitting and has been good with the glove. He just can't seem to get good wood the second time around. His pinch hits have been early in the game or when there is no one left on the bench. In danger of being farmed out, but a couple hits would go a long way to staying on the team. And as long as starter Clem Koshorek struggles, there is a slim shot at starting.

Portland Beavers: Fitzpatrick and Denton
Code:
The most amazing thing about Jimmy's early season RBI binge is the relative lack of extra base hits. He has just put his effort into meeting the ball and not mashing it, as he could. His production with a runner in scoring position is phemoninal. The numbers just speak for themselves--when the power comes he'll put up MVP numbers. Code:
Unless of course the MVP voters go for his teammate Denton. Denton's number are not as big as Fitzpatrick's right now, but I think this is a good picture of what his whole season will be like. Both guys will score and drive in over 100 runs, it will be hard to chose among them. The oddest thing about Denton is while he is 8 for 8 with steals, he has hit into 3 double plays already.

Sacramento Salons: Anton Gogolak
Code:
Gogolak is part of four hitters who is keeping hope alive for the Salons. He gets big hits and is playing like a star. However, his supporting cast is costing the Salons' wins. Gogo should be the anchor in the three spot, but more often than not, he is where the hitting starts. The Salons did make some changes to the pitching and position players, but I'm not sure they have the hitting to contend for the PCL crown. Gogolak, if he maintains this level of production, gives Sacramento a chance. And if one or two more start finding the holes, then a pennant there might be.

Dash is one of the leading hitters, with Connie Ryan and Paul Waner, of the worst pitching club in major league baseball. Because of a inadequate pitching the Saints have to outslug their rivals everyday. Spivey is certainly doing his part in that matter. The power isn't quite there yet, but he can do marvlous things with the bat. Saints will have to decide whether to trade Spivey or build around him.

Without much surprise (and despite a subpar last start) Rod has established himself as the Pads number one starter. Control has not been as exceptional as it could be, but he makes enough hitters miss to not let it hurt. Lefties seem to have the power stroke locked in--this could cost runs down the line. San Diego is hanging around .500 on the strength of its arms. In a roster shake up many of the rookies who started the season with San Diego have been farmed out for some veterans. If this group can do more with the bat, then a guy like Rod has a chance to be the pitcher of the year in the PCL.
