Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys

October 2, 2004

Official Press Release

Southern Arkansas Muleriders (1-2) @ Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (1-2) Preview

Arkansas Tech plays their first home game as well as their first conference game of the season as they host the Muleriders of Southern Arkansas.

Tech's Ray Best and Ross Chitwood combined for a disappointing 79 yards rushing against Alabama but appear ready after an off week to run against a defense that has already given up over 500 yards on the ground. Best leads the team in rushing with 170 yards rushing.

Lamont Pearson will be out to prove he deserves to retain the starting quarterback position. Marlon Beyer, the backup, had a good game against Alabama and it stirred up a storm in Blytheville the past two weeks.

Southern Arkansas runs the West Coast offense, but hasn't been very effective. QB Colin Ljunghammar has 4 TDs but also 7 INTs in just 3 games. Their leading rusher is running back Timothy Burks with 209 yards.

Arkansas Tech's defense has been exposed the past two games, but looks to be rested, prepared, and better suited against conference competition. Defensive end Isaac Hedges leads the team with 21 tackles, while team captain and middle linebacker Trent Lynch leads the team with 5 tackles for loss.

The Mulerider's defense has allowed an average of 31 points a game, but that's mostly due to a 56 point pasting by UConn. They held a good Miami OH team to 27 points and San Jose St to 10.

Injury report
Arkansas Tech
Out: S Neil Jamison (high ankle sprain)
Probable: DE Jamal McCarthy (sprain knee) RB Ray Best (concussion), K Andy Fredrickson (bruised ribs)

Southern Arkansas
Out: T Leo Skladanowski
Probable: RB Trevor Harrison, FB Tony Wannamaker, FB Alan Banks

Prediction: ATU is favored by 18. I'd take SAU and the points myself, but I see ATU winning.

Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys

October 2, 2004

Official Press Release

Wonder Boys Drive 95 Yards for Winning TD in Final Seconds

ATU also had 99 yard TD drive in 2nd Quarter

The Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys won their home opener, 24-17, on a 16-yard Ross Chitwood score with just 8 seconds left in the game. The Wonder Boys (2-2, 1-0 conf) were running a no huddle offense with just 2 minutes and 15 seconds left in the game starting on their own 5 yard line.

An option run gained 10 yards, but two incompletions soon set up a 3rd and long. With the Muleriders thinking pass, ATU head coach Ardent Enthusiast called for his toss play. The toss, which is exactly what it is called in their playbook, is actually an offtackle play and gained 12 yards to the Wonder Boy 27.

"We believed," said quarterback Lamont Pearson, "we believe in this offense. We knew we could convert that 3rd down." Pearson had a good game passing himself, hitting on 6 of 9 throws, including the next play.

Having just surprised the Muleriders, the Wonder Boys reached into their trick play bag. Running back Ray Best, who finished with 177 yards rushing and 2 TDs, went in motion but never stopped. Best, who goes in motion nearly every play, usually finishes his motion behind the quarterback. Instead, he went all the way to the sideline as a flanker. The Mulerider defense refused to call a timeout with the clock ticking down and inside linebacker Benjamin Freeman followed him in motion.

"That was the matchup we wanted," said Pearson, "We were prepared to call time (out) if they sent a corner out with him."

Best turned on the jets and quickly outran the linebacker down the sideline. Pearson threw a jump ball up to Best who came down with it and was finally brought down by a safety at the Mulerider 27 and a gain of 46 on the play.

Two plays later, and with just 8 seconds on the clock as he crossed the goalline, Ross Chitwood scored the winning touchdown.

"It feels good to be back on track," Enthusiast said, "we've had a rough couple of weeks." Arkansas Tech had been outscored 80-13 over their last two games.

The Muleriders definitely gave the Wonder Boys more than they were expecting, going up 10-0 in the first quarter and pinning ATU on their own 1 yard line early in the 2nd quarter.

Tech converted crucial third downs the entire drive and capped it off with a Ray Best 6 yard score, his first rushing TD of the year.

With just 8 seconds remaining in the first half, kicker Andy Fredrickson hit on a 23 yard field goal to tie the game up at the half.

Southern Arkansas came out and scored again in the 3rd quarter, and ATU faithful had to be concerned as Best fumbled 3 times on his way to the endzone in the 3rd and 4th quarters. His second fumble came at the Southern Arkansas 3 yard line. Still, Best did score again early in the 4th to tie the game up at 17 and had the huge catch to set up the winning score.

Mean streak: Guard Quinn Hampton and the rest of the Wonder Boy offensive line showed renewed determination to establish the run. Hampton led the linemen with 6 key run blocks.

Injury report: No injuries were reported after the game.

Craig Sighting: TE Antoine Craig assisted in the 99 yard 2nd quarter drive with his first reception in three games. He gained 10 yards on a 3rd and 8 play, gaining 4 crucial yards after the catch.

6 of 9: Lamont Pearson looked poised and relaxed today completing 6 of his 9 passes. One of the three incompletions was actually a drop by receiver Scottie Baerg. Backup QB Marlon Beyer did not play in the game.

Stepping up: Linebacker Trent Lynch stepped up with 9 tackles, 2 assists, and half a sack. He shared the sack with defensive end Damon Kaplan.

Who's next? ATU travels to Texarkana to play their second conference game, Volmert State (2-3, 1-0).

Other scores:
Boston College 48, Mayes 3
Central Arkansas 38, Louisiana-Lafayette 7
Arkansas A&M 29, Northwestern St 10
Volmert St 42, Little Rock 35

TE Strzelczyk Commits

Arkansas Tech didn't waste any time getting their first commitment of the season. TE Brock Strzelczyk from Marmaduke committed after the Southern Arkansas game.

"It's a great fit for me, really," said Brock, "it's near home and I never even considered anyone else. It really just boiled down to taking my official visit and finally getting to commit."

In other news, ATU won't be adding DE Xavier Hayes, which means Tech missed out on the #1 and #2 DEs in Arkansas this year. Hayes committed this week to Vanderbilt.

It's been reported that the Wonder Boys hit the road hard this week to try and bring in at least one defensive end this recruiting class. DE Emmitt Sauter is probably out of their league, but hadn't officially been offered by anyone yet. He's been contacted by 10 schools, however.

Jimmie Pinson has been offered by Bowling Green, but has yet to take an official visit anywhere.

Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys

October 9, 2004

Official Press Release

Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (2-2, 1-0) @ Volmert State Bulldogs (2-3, 1-0) Preview

Arkansas Tech will try to remain undefeated in conference play today as they go to Texarkana to play the Volmert State Bulldogs.

Tech's Ray Best had more yards rushing against Southern Arkansas (177) than he did the three previous games combined (170). He figures to play a prominent role in today's game against the Bulldogs, who have given up 70 or more points twice this season and 35 to Little Rock. Best leads the team in rushing with 347 and is third in the conference.

Lamont Pearson had a good game last week as well and looks to be ready against the conference's worst pass defense.

The Bulldogs run a Wing-T offense, and are a very good rushing team featuring the conference's leading rusher, Danny Eaton (371 yards). Freshman Bob Andrews is their change of pace back and has 237 yards himself. The amazing part? Eaton entered the season #2 on the depth chart and Andrews was 3rd string. An injury to Don Fletcher gave them their chances.

Tight end Jason Keillor has 5 catches on the season.

Arkansas Tech's defense looks to focus on the run today. Defensive end Isaac Hedges leads the team with 26 tackles, while team captain and middle linebacker Trent Lynch leads the team with 7 tackles for loss.

The Volmert State defense has allowed an average of 45 points a game and has been equally horrible against the run and the pass. Defensive tackle Aaron Lyle is the captain of the defense and has 10 tackles for loss. Unfortunately, injuries at their defensive end position are forcing the Bulldogs to start walk on freshmen.

Injury report
Arkansas Tech
Out: S Neil Jamison (high ankle sprain)
Probable: RB Ray Best (concussion), K Andy Fredrickson (bruised ribs)

Volmert State
Out: RB Don Fletcher, DE Wes Bickford
Questionable: DE Randal Randle

Prediction: ATU is favored by 1. Take it, ATU wins this one on the road.

Official Press Release

Wonder Boys Impress With 35-7 Win over VSU

Best with 245 yards rushing; 3 TDs

The Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (3-2, 2-0) remained undefeated in conference play today by defeating the Volmert State Bulldogs (2-4, 1-1), 35-7.

The game was tied at 7 at the end of the first quarter thanks to safety Leon Jagger's 50 yard interception return for a TD by the Wonder Boys and a 1 yard scoring run by Danny Eaton of Volmert State.

ATU running back Ray Best had a career day, carrying the ball an astonishing 43 times for 245 yards. Both totals are single game records for the NCAA so far this season. Two of those carries resulted in touchdowns in the second quarter, including a 38 yard run up the middle with 29 seconds left in the half.

Best would later score in the 3rd quarter as well. The final score was a 4th quarter touchdown pass to backup tight end Alan Dennis from Lamont Pearson.

Running back Ross Chitwood added 63 yards rushing as well as the Wonder Boys piled up more yards rushing (331) than the Bulldogs did total (269). Offensive lineman Vinny Sawyer paved the way with 10 key run blocks.

The ATU defense was up to the challenge as well. The Wonder Boy defense intercepted the Bulldog quarterback 4 times, including the first quarter interception for a touchdown. Leon Jagger and cornerback Irving Swift each had two interceptions.

"We had to stop the run and get ahead of them," Jagger later said, "We knew if they had to throw the ball they were in trouble."

Volmert State entered the game with the conference's leading rusher, Danny Eaton. He finished with 63 yards rushing on the day.

Mean streak: Guards Quinn Hampton and Vinny Sawyer have led the Wonder Boy offensive line in a renewed determination to establish the run these past two games. Sawyer led the linemen with 10 key run blocks.

Injury report: No injuries were reported after the game.

3 catches: By the entire Wonder Boy offense, and 2 drops. That led to a misleading passing line of 3 for 8 by quarterback Lamont Pearson.

Osky! The four interceptions by the Wonder Boy defense ensured that the lead was never in question today. Jagger's return for a touchdown was his second of the year.

Who's next? Tech hosts their first and only non-conference game of the year as they host the 2-4 New Mexico State Aggies

Other scores:
Central Arkansas 17, Southern Arkansas 14
Northwestern St 35, Mayes 21
Little Rock 25, Arkansas A&M 22

Tech Hit With Big Surprise

Every Student-Athlete Targeted Will Visit Campus

Shortly after returning from their conference road win, Arkansas Tech head coach Ardent Enthusiast was given the news that every recruit that they had offered a scholarship to had requested a visit to the campus.

Running back Ray Best's career day (and current NCAA season high) in carries and yards probably had a lot to do with the decisions of the student-athletes.

Arkansas Tech has 15 scholarships available for student-athletes. Tech, which has a large senior class this year, will likely have 16 dead scholarships.

The NCAA ruled this offseason that schools could offer a maximum of 16 scholarships a year. Arkansas Tech plans to use all 16 scholarships this season.

Official Press Release

New Mexico State Aggies (2-4) @ Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (3-2) Preview

The Wonder Boys hope to split their record against non-conference foes today as they host the Sun Belt Conference's New Mexico State Aggies.

Wonder Boy running back Ray Best had a career game last week and hopes to build on his success. He's now the conference leading rusher (592) by over 150 yards and is averaging 118 yards per game. Fellow back Ross Chitwood has chipped in 281 yards on the season as well.

Quarterback Lamont Pearson has a new favorite target of late, receiver Nate Matthews. Matthews has 9 catches for 110 yards on the season.

New Mexico State runs a Wing-T offense, but doesn't appear as formidable as Volmert State in their execution. Three backs split the carries out of the backfield, while quarterback Juan Witt has thrown 10 interceptions and has been sacked 12 times.

Running back Craig Kuhfahl leads the team in rushing (305 yds, 2TDs). Senior receiver Ben Chapman leads the team in receiving (17 rec, 172 yds, 3 TD).

The offense took a hit in their first game when their best receiver, Jimmy Givens, went out with a torn wrist tendon. They will be without their starting guard Ken Stewart and may be without starting tackle Dwayne Sinclair as well.
ATU's defense was outstanding last week, sacking the quarterback once and forcing 4 interceptions while allowing a season low 7 points. Linebacker Trent Lynch and defensive end Isaac Hedges are the leaders of the run defense, while safety Leon Jagger has emerged in the defensive secondary with three interceptions, two for touchdowns.

The Aggie defense has the worst run defense in the nation having allowed 1441 yards rushing already this season. Teams are averaging nearly 5 yards a rush against them. Defensive end Lester Sutter has 5.5 sacks on the the year, while safety Herb Francis leads the team in tackling with 42 tackles, 20 assists.

Injury report
Arkansas Tech
Out: S Neil Jamison (high ankle sprain)

New Mexico State
Out: WR Jimmy Givens, G Ken Stewart, P Antonio Williams, OLB Brian Cattell
Questionable: T Dwayne Sinclair
Probable: CB Ray Clements

Prediction: Tech is favored by 18, but shouldn't win by that much.

Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys

October 17, 2004

Official Press Release

Wonder Boys Ride Best to Victory

Back scores winning TD with 2 minutes remaining

BLYTHEVILLE, Ar (AP) -- Before this year, Ray Best didn't know much about the double wing offense, now he's the star of it.

"Coach said he was going to run me. I didn't know he was going to run me this much," the Wonder Boy running back said on Saturday. Best's wide smile showed he hardly minded head coach Ardent Enthusiast relying on him to rescue Arkansas Tech from blowing a 14 point lead in the fourth quarter. Best finished with 209 yards on 28 carries with two touchdowns.

Best was held in check for most of the first half as the Aggies held a 12-7 lead. He and the Wonder Boy offense opened up in the 3rd quarter. Best scored on a twelve yard run, while Lamont Pearson connected with Scottie Baerg on two of his three touchdown catches.

The Aggies nearly took the lead when kicker Kerry Heier missed on a 56 yard field goal attempt. Heier, who entered the game 2 of 3 on field goals and a perfect 11 of 11 on extra points, missed all three of his kick attempts in the game. After the first touchdown by the Aggies, Heier's extra point was no where close and wide right. The Aggies went for two after the rest of their touchdowns.

Taking over on their own 39 after the missed kick, the Wonder Boys needed just one play. Best's 61-yard sideline run with 2:14 to go clinched Tech's 4th win of the year.

"Whew! This sure makes next week exciting," Enthusiast said of the Wonder Boys upcoming trip to powerful Central Arkansas -- despite sloppy pass defense Saturday.

"I think this is a hell of a start, who would have expected us to be 4-2 half way through the year?" Enthusiast said.

New Mexico State rallied to tie the game and was in a position to win the game in the fourth. Quarterback Juan Witt his Adam Rodriguez and Ben Chapman with touchdown scores to tie the game up.

The Aggies nearly tied the game at 35 after Witt hit Chapman with a 48 yard pass from the New Mexico 19 yard line. Three plays later Wonder Boy safety Leon Jagger made his 4th interception of the season on his own 4 yard line. Tech, favored by 18 points, then ran the clock out for the win.

The Aggies' repeated rallies stunned the crowd of 18,000 -- Tech drew just 16,700 in their home opener.

"We didn't want it to be this close, but in the long run we can build on this adversity," Arkansas Tech offensive coordinator Jeremy Hulsey said.

Pearson finished 8-for-10 for 145 yards and the three touchdowns to Baerg, who tied a school record for receiving scores. Baerg's 66-yard touchdown reception came on a 5-yard curl. Baerg broke a tackle and streaked to the endzone for the go-ahead score to start the 3rd quarter. Baerg finished with 3 receptions, all touchdowns, for 86 yards.

Best, who had entered the game off a career game last week and up against the worst run defense of the nation, drew high praise from the Aggie defenders.

"He was more than advertised," New Mexico State linebacker Archie Stafford said of Best.

"He's faster than we are. The Solecismic Eight is going to have trouble with that all year," Stafford said, knowing Best and the Wonder Boys remaining schedule is conference play.

"It's a pretty good feeling going into (Central Arkansas)," Best said. "We're just going to sneak in there and see what we can do."

Best may have trouble sneaking into anywhere over the coming weeks and years.

Follow me: Guards Quinn Hampton and Vinny Sawyer continue to lead the way. The linemen combined with 10 key run blocks.

Injury report: ATU suffered their first serious injury in weeks when nickel corner Terry Fredrickson went down in the 3rd quarter. The corner has been scheduled for arthroscopic knee surgery and is expected to miss the next 7 weeks, virtually ending his season.

Injury update: Safety Neil Jamison, out since the second game of the season with a high ankle sprain, is still hobbled but hopes to begin practicing with the team after the Central Arkansas game.

3 catches: After the team had just 3 catches last week, Scottie Baerg hauled in 3 catches himself this week. Ray Best and fullback Jim Fredrickson had 2 catches each as well.

Osky! Jagger intercepted his 3rd pass in 2 games to seal the win. Jagger also led the team in tackles with 9.

Who's next? Tech hits the road and the conference championship may be at stake. Central Arkansas sits on top of the SOL 8 with an undefeated record in conference and a 5-1 record overall. Central Arkansas is ranked 41st in the nation.

Other scores:
Louisiana-Monroe 24, Arkansas A&M 10
Central Arkansas 24, Volmert State 17
Southern Arkansas 42, Northwestern State 13
Mayes 45, Little Rock 6

ATU Gain 6 Commitments, Lose 2

Gaarder to Arkansas, Bradford to Memphis

ATU is reaping the benefits of their early NCAA D1 success, as the team gained six new commitments following the home win over New Mexico State.

Is winning a major factor? Maybe. Running back Blake Fulton from Athens, Alabama, chose the Wonder Boys over nearby 1-5 UAB.

Other student-atheletes committing this week were OT Lionel Ladd, OG TJ Stewart, OLB Sammy Michalske, DT Gary Talley, and FB Duane Duveneck.

Two athletes that got away were ILB John Gaarder, who chose Arkansas over a number of schools, and DT Vinny Bradford, who chose Memphis.

With the fresh commitments in tow, Tech offered two more scholarships to defensive tackles who haven't made a decision. Kerry Ferguson (Buffalo, MO), is a highly touted defensive lineman who's grades aren't great. His grades have scared off a number of teams (2.1 GPA, 901 reported test score).

Defensive tackle Jonathan Isaac from Nashville, TN, isn't as highly touted, but definitely has the grades to qualify.

Official Press Release

Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (4-2, 2-0) @ Central Arkansas Bears (5-1, 3-0) Preview

The Wonder Boys travel to Conway, Arkansas today to play the conference leading Central Arkansas Bears. Winning the Solecismic Eight guarantees a spot in the first ever NCAA D1 playoff. If Arkansas Tech is to make the playoffs, they'll have to go through the Bears. The game will be televised on TV4.

Wonder Boy running back Ray Best has been impressive since starting conference play. His 801 yards rushing is good for 1st in conference and 5th in the nation. It's also 214 yards better then the 2nd leading rusher in the conference. Ross Chitwood has 304 yards as well.

Quarterback Lamont Pearson was 8 of 10 last week against the New Mexico State Aggies with 3 touchdowns. Receiver Scottie Baerg caught all three touchdown passes.

Central Arkansas, like many other teams, runs a Wing-T system built on misdirection. Quarterback Marshall Hamilton may be the most accomplished passer the Wonder Boys have seen all year. He has completed nearly 60% of his passes on the year for 726 yards and 7 touchdowns.

Running backs Kris Graff and Darrell Kaplan split the carries on the ground and have combined for 1001 yards total. Receiver Charlie Paup has 12 catches on the year, but is out with knee surgery. Three other players have 10 receptions each.

Defensively, the Bears have been impressive as well, having allowed just under 17 points a game (100 points in 6 games). Linebacker Nicky Huffman leads the team in tackles with 38 (6 for loss), while defensive end Louie Hines leads the rush with 3.5 sacks.

Injury report
Arkansas Tech
Out: S Neil Jamison (high ankle sprain), CB Terry Fredrickson (arthroscopic knee surgery)

Central Arkansas
Out: WR Charlie Paup
Probable: DT Jason Reichart

Prediction: Central Arkansas, favored by 12, will probably win this one.

For those curious, Arkansas Tech won 27-17, with late interceptions by Swift and Lynch (returned for a TD) sealing the victory.

I was waiting to do the write up until I got to Chicago. This afternoon my saved game was corrupted.

Bummer.

I was enjoying the game.

I'd like to hear what you liked and didn't like about the dynasty, short as it was.

Personally, I thought I went a bit overboard with the pregame and post game. It was a ton of fun, but it did keep me from playing. My original intent was to be much more involved with who my players were...not just a few key starters, or even just the starters...darn near the whole team, just like I am in real life with my Vols.

I liked knowing full well each player I was considering for scholarships...that was the first time I can remember doing that.

Sorry, buddy.

I've bounced around a few ideas, but I really liked the storyline I "developed" for this. I was really bummed to let it go.
