BBCF 1.52 - The Glenn Grubb Dynasty

A player like Glenn Grubb comes across once in a lifetime. He has all the tools you want to see in a QB - a strong arm, terrific accuracy, great running speed, trmendous instincts, and great intellect. This guy excels in every single category. He's more talented than any other player in college football history. The buzz about him during recruiting season was enormous. The star from Palm Bay High School in Melbourne, FL obviously received attention from Miami, Florida, and Florida State and it was expected that he would choose between one of these three schools. On signing day, it was still unclear who he would choose. At his announcement press conference, he broke the news by holding the following helmet in the air....

The room was dead silent. Everyone was waiting to see if it was a joke. It wasn't. Glenn Grubb was going to Duke, and the college football world would never be the same.

Note: With 1.52 being released, I thought it would be fun to get back into BBCF. I still want to get my massive interactive dynasty restarted, so this is a sort of test run for that.

The idea here was to create a maxed out player (I gave him 100 in every category) and see what he would do on a terrible team.

How do you go about creating guys? It's probably something simple I am easily missing, but any help would be awesome.

After you've started a league, you click on the Options tab (under History) on the left side of the screen. This will bring up a new list of links on the far left. The 3rd one down will be player editor. Then you just pick a team and player to edit.

Roster Overview

Backfield: Other than Glenn Grubb, not much to work with here. Ewing is a decent backup QB but will probably not see the field very much. Barnes has the potential to be a very good RB, but as a junior, will he ever reach that?

Receivers: Good news for Grubb. Duke actually has some talent at this position. Hargrove and Thomas are decent wideouts, and Payne has excellent potential. Henry will start as a freshman and hopefully develop quickly.

Offensive Line: And the bad news for Grubb is that Duke is absolutely miserable here. Covington is the only decent starter. Walker might turn into a decent Tackle, but other than that you've got a bunch of one star players with no potential. At least Grubb has great mobility.

Defensive Line: Junior DE Charlie Moore is a stud, by far the best player on the defense. The rest of the line is a joke, although Montgomery, Rosenthal, and Jacobs have decent potential

Linebackers: Wilson and Meyers are pretty good, but both are seniors. The future does not look very bright after they leave.

Secondary: The CB's will be abused by the receivers in the ACC. None of them can cover well and only Williams has any potential. Lewis Reeves is a very good Safety, but the Free Safeties are worthless. Expect this squad to give up lots of big plays.

Special Teams: Garcia is a good senior punter, but hopefully he won't see the field much. The Kickers suck. In a rarity, Grubb will be handling Kick and Punt return duties and he's superb at both.

Week 2 - South Carolina at Duke

Glenn completes his first pass and leads the Blue Devils to a FG on his first drive. However, the Duke defense is weak as expected and South Carolina quickly takes a 10-3 lead. After returning a kickoff to the 45, it only took 4 plays for his 1st career TD pass and a 10-10 tie. Glenn followed that up later with a 73 yard punt return TD. The teams then traded FG's befor the half for a 20-13 Duke halftime lead.

In the 2nd half, Glenn took over the game. A 10 yard TD pass gave Duke a two possession lead in the 3rd quarter. In the 4th quarter, with South carolina trying to hang on, glenn broke their backs with a beautiful 41 yard TD pass to Thomas, making it a 34-13 lead. The teams would tradre pointless TD's to finish the game at 41-20.

Stats:
Glenn Grubb, 25-31,399 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT. 5 rushes, 17 yards.
WR Marlon Thomas 8 catches, 147 yards, 1 TD
WR Hugh Hargrove 6 catches, 72 yards
WR Scott Payne 5 catches, 68 yards, 1 TD
MLB Geoffrey Wilson 8 Tackles, 2 Assists, 1 Sack, 1 Hurry, 1 Pass Defended

Duke at Tennessee

Glenn's 2nd game was a very tough assignment: on the road at Leyland stadium. The Blue Devil defense played spirited at the beginning, stopping a couple Volunteer drives and coming up with a turnover. Still, it was Tennessee that would strike first on a 3 yard TD run by Austin Crook. Grubb followed that up by connecting with Payne on a 33 yard TD pass at the start of the 2nd quarter to tie the game. The Duke defense was caught off guard ont he next series, as it took Tennessee only two plays to score on a 56 yard TD pass. Grubb wasn't finished. He completed several clutch passes on an 8 play drive that tied the game at 14. Tennessee added a FG before halftime for a 17-14 lead.

The Volunteers scored a TD on their first drive of the 2nd half. Duke couldn't keep up, as Grubb's receivers started to betray him. Thomas ran an incorrect route on a key play and the drive stalled, although Tennessee was pinned at the 3. The Duke defense could no longer keep up with the Volunteer offense (681 total yards in the game), who ripped them apart on a 97 yard drive that ended in a 5 yard TD pass, giving Tennessee a 31-14 lead. Grubb was unable to get the dispirited offense moving again, and Tennesee tacked on two late FG's for a 37-14 victory.

QB Glenn Grubb: 16-35 for 258 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT, 3 rushes, 19 yards.
RB Michael Barnes: 19 carries, 74 yards
WR Hugh Hargrove: 5 catches, 129 yards,
WR Scott Payne: 7 catches, 93 yards, 2 TD
MLB Geoffrey Wilson 8 Tackles, 1 Pass Defended

Week 4 - Duke at Boston College

Boston College came otu with a gameplan designed to make us beat them on the ground. They focused on hindering Glenn's passing, and they were enormously successful at accomplishing that. Glenn would only have 68 yards passing on the day. Despite this, Duke managed to keep it close thanks to a 64 yd INT return by MLB Geoffrey Wilson and two Marvin Morris FG's (set up by big running plays from Grubb). Duke actually led 13-6 at the half.

BC's offense finally got on track in the 3rd quarter when QB Monty Brown completed a 64 yard TD pass to tie the score. Two plays later, Grubb was intercepted and Monty Brown threw another TD pass. Suddenly, the Eagles had a 20-13 lead. Duke never recovered from this. BC would add a 4th quarter FG for the 23-13 victory.

Notable Stats:
QB Glenn Grubb 8 of 26 for 68 yards, 0 td, 1 INT, 8 carries, 100 yards
RB Michael Barnes 18 carries, 75 yards, 3 catches, 36 yards
MLB Geoffrey Wilson 6 Tackles, 3 Assists, 1 INT, 1 TD, 1 Pass Defended
SS Lewis Reeves 7 Tackles, 3 Assists, 2 Passes Defended, 2 Stuffs

Week 5: Duke at North Carolina

Glenn had a better go of it in this game. While North Carolina's ground attack abused the Duke defense for a quick 14-0 lead. Grubb's passing kept the Blue Devils in the game. North Carolina still kept piling on the points (partly thanks to a Grubb INT returned for a TD) and built a 31-7 lead at the half.

Undaunted, Grubb struck quickly in the 2nd half when he hit William Walker for a 55 yard TD pass, cutting the lead to 31-13. Duke's defense forced a stop and Grubb was able to drive Duke to the Tarheels 7 yard line. Unfortunately, Duke had to settle for a FG, but this did cut the lead to 31-16. It was now a two possession game. Another stop gave Duke a prime chance to get back in the game, but penalties killed the next drive and North Carolina was able to add a FG to make it 34-16. In the 4th quarter, Grubb was able to drive to the NC 10 yard line but a penalty set up a 3rd and goal from the 20 and Grubb's desperation pass was picked off. UNC would soon put the game away on a 4 yard TD run, and Grubb would add a meaningless TD pass with 2 seconds left.

The Duke defense just can't get the job done to help Grubb out. They have up 301 yards rushing in this one.

Final Score: North Carolina 41, Duke 23

Notable Stats:

QB Glenn Grubb 25-44 for 394 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT, 7 carries, 13 yards, 1 TD
WR Hugh Hargrove 8 catches, 164 yards
WR William Walker 6 catches, 70 yards, 1 TD
SS Lewis Reeves 6 Tackles, 6 Assists, 1 Pass Defended
MLB Geoffrey Wilson 5 Tackles, 5 Assists, 1 Stuff

NC State 27, Clemson 22
Virginia 17, Boston College 13
Maryland 33, Miami 30
Florida State 41, Wake Forest 10
Virginia Tech, 24, Georgia Tech 17

Offensive POTW: WR Victor Cook, Kansas State 8 catches, 175 yards, 3 TD

Defensive POTW: MLB Ricky Calderon, Texas Tech 8 Tackles, 6 Assists, 1 Sack, 2 Stuffs, 1 Pass Defended, 1 INT (In 19-18 win over oklahoma State)

Special Teams POTW: PR Juan Nguyen, Northern Illinois 4 Returns, 178 yards, 2 TD

Juan deserves a special mention for his overall performance. In a 31-9 win over Ball State, he returned two punts for TD's, and also had 5 catches for 159 yards and 2 TD's.

Game of the Week: Maryland 33, Miami 30 - This was a back and forth game where the lead changed hands 4 times during regulation. The Hurricanes sent it to OT with a 28 yard FG. Both teams opened with TD's in the 1st OT. In the 2nd OT, Maryland kicked a FG and Miami had a chance to win it with 2nd and goal from the 2. The Maryland D held and Miami kicked a FG to send it to 3 OT's. Miami continued to self destruct as an unnecessary roughness penalty pushed them back too far and their kicker missed the 49 yard try. Maryland went three and out in their possession, but their kicker was able to hit the 44 yard FG for the victory.

Weekly injury report

RB Michael Barnes is really hampered by an injury to his Wrist (Broken). He could play as an absolute last resort, but we would strongly advise against it.

RB Joseph Kennedy is recovering from an injury to his Ankle (Hyperextension). He seems to be progressing well and we recommend playing him this week.

WR Marion Thomas is saddled with an injury to his Groin (Torn Muscle). His performance would certainly suffer if you played him so we recommend letting have a little more time to get back closer to 100%.

CB Abe Baker is currently battling an injury to his Ankle (Nerve Injury). He is getting better and able to play, but you might want to sit him out one more week.

Week 6 - #2 Florida State at Duke

FSU fans were looking forward to this game. So far they had enjoyed the struggles of the star recruit who picked Duke over their program. They couldn't wait for the championship bound Seminoles to beat up Glenn's overmatched Duke team. Many of them travelled with the team just to taunt Glenn.

The game started out exactly as the Noles wanted. Only 4 plays in, FSU QB James Woods threw a 48 yard TD pass for a 7-0 lead. Duke pinned the Noles deep on the next series, but Woods was still able to drive them to a FG for a 10-0 1st quarter lead. Duke finally gets something going when Grubb connects with Payne on a 49 yard pass, putting the ball at the 5 yard line. Duke had to settle for a FG but it was now 10-3. FSU drives right through the Blue Devil defense again, but cautiousness in the red zone forced them to settle for a FG and a 13-3 lead. Grubb would make them pay with two completions of over 30 yards ont he next drive, the latter being a 30 yard TD pass to Hargrove. Now it was 13-10 and the FSU fans taunting Grubb are silent. Sensing danger, the Noles offense only took 4 plays to score another TD. After a Duke 3 and out, the Noles drove right back through the Blue Devils D and scored on a 17 yard TD pass for a 27-10 lead. Late in the half, Grubb was backed up at his own 4 yard line. He completed a simple slant pass to William Walker who found himself completely wide open and ran 96 yards for the TD. This once again silenced the Grubb haters.

Grubb opened up the 2nd half by returning the kickoff 90 yards for a TD. Suddenly it was a 3 pt. game. A stunned FSU went 3 and out and Grubb found himself with the ball at midfield. 3 plays later, he hit TE Leon Henry for a 41 yard TD pass and amazingly Duke now had the lead!! Suddenly the home crowd was alive and many Duke students were rushing to the stadium to watch this game. Now the Duke defense was fired up. Wilson and Reeves made big plays to force another 3 and out. Then on 3rd and 9 at the Duke 30, Grubb saw his RB Joseph Kennedy wide open on a deep route and 70 yards later, Duke had a 38-27 lead! A furious Bobby Bowden finally gets his team fired up again, and the Noles pick apart the Duke defense on an 8 play drive. The 2 pt. conversion was missed but it was now a 38-33 score with 3:18 left in the 3rd. Helped by a foolish roughing the passer penalty on 3rd down, Grubb drove Duek down to the FSU 4 yard line, where Kennedy ran it in from 4 yards out. With 1:13 left in the 3rd quarter, it was a 45-33 Duke lead. In the 4th quarter, FSU blew their first drive with stupid penalties. Then on Duke's ensuing possession, they gave up an 18 yard run on 3rd and 11. Later in the drive, Grubb would complete a 20 yard pass on 3rd and 10. This 14 play drive that destroyed FSU's spirit ended whtn Grubb found Walker for a 3 yard TD pass. The score was now 52-33. The Noles would play the rest of the game out, but they were just going through the motions. They knew it was over: not just the game, but also their national title hopes.

What a HUGE win for Glenn. He almost singlehandedly destroyed Florida State's national title hopes.

Final Score: Duke 52, Florida State 40
