MTW vs. RTW
I am considering getting either Medieval Total War or Rome Total War. Other than the genres, is there much difference?

RTW is more or less a refined version of the game. But the storylines are different and RTW is more scripted than MTW. (You have to play as one of three factions as far as I can tell).

The first time through you can only play as the three Roman houses, you can unlock the other factions

Cool. I am still my first time through, putting through about 5 years at a clip with 2 or 3 battles....it could be next year by the time I unlock any other factions, however. Just in time for the patch maybe?

Rome? Prettier, many improvements throughout. (Though in desperate need of patching.)
Medieval? As it stands, longer term playability and just more fun. |

Did they ever release a patch for RTW? I recall that many stopped playing it because of the stupid AI in battles (i.e., making them too easy to win - unlike MTW).

Bucc...the patch is coming out in mid-January apparently. They want to extensively beta-test it first to make sure it's got everything patched up right.

Another thing to note on MTW is all the mods and different maps available. At this point, MTW has much more replayability because of the user community. Perhaps next year at this time the same will be said about RTW. Still, for $19, you can do a lot worse than the MTW and Vikings expansion combo.
