SOUTHERN CONFERENCE WELCOMES COLLEGE OF ST. CHARLES

The Southern Conference, home to talented programs such as Davidson, have welcome the College of St. Charles, fresh off their run to the Sweet 16 in this year's NCAA tournament. VMI has opted to become an Independent as a result.

"We're happy to be a member of the prestigious Southern Conference," said the school's athletic director Martha Kipley. "We're appreciative of the opportunities this will give our student-athletes to compete at a high level all year long."

YELLOWSTONE UNIVERSITY HIRES CAREY AS HEAD COACH

CODY, WYOMING -- Yellowstone University President D.C. Daly and Athletics Director Bob Driscoll announced today the appointment of Matt Carey as the head basketball coach of the University. Carey, who becomes the 2nd head coach in school history, comes to PC after spending the 2014-15 season as the head coach at the College of St. Charles. Davis, a 2005 graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, was named the 2015 National Coach of the Year by the ESPN the Magazine.

"We are very excited to have Matt Carey leading our men's basketball program," Father Shanley said. "Over the last several weeks, we have conducted a thorough search. During this process, we talked to some of the most knowledgeable members of the college basketball community. It was our task to find a coach who would lead our student-athletes and embrace the University's mission. Keno Davis met all of our selection criteria."

In his first season as a head coach, Carey led the St. Charles Beagles to a 27-4 mark, as an independent. His team advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history, in their first year of eligibility for the tournament as a Division I school. Drake was defeated in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament by Florida, 65-61.

Last season, the Yellowstone Wolves were 25-6 (13-3 in MWC play) and lost in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Here's our schedule for the 2015-16 season. I made it tough intentionally out of conference, because I really wanted to see what these kids are made of. Chances are, we'll get beaten bad, but that's okay.

We join the 2015-16 season in progress.

What I am truly excited about is our recruit class for next year.

We recruited three kids that should help us a lot.

All three are west coast targets, which wasn't my original M.O, but it ended up working out for us I think.

Ok, our last non-conference game of the year is against Nebraska.

I think we can beat them, they have a better record than us, but they didn't play a schedule like we did.

I'm simming the game now and at half-time. We led the game 53-35. Sandy Ordonez has sixteen points at the half and Andy Kazmbe has 5 boards and 3 points.

Second half, we just came out and roared, keeping the lead and extending it massively and in the end, we won 101-68.

This was the sort of output I wanted from these guys, because this is the sort of team we're supposed to beat and going into the conference schedule, this is the sort of talent we'll face off against more often than not, except for the upper echelons of the conference.

I'm proud of the team, again, for how they showed up in this one. Sucks to lose, but I'm confident that this is just the beginning of what ought to be a strong conference year for us, heading into the MWC tourney in two months.

Here's the rest of our regular season schedule. I'm going to do a cursory runthrough, in part because I'm not sure how interesting it is when I go game-by-game, unless we run into something worth sharing.

The rest of our schedule should yield us 6-8 more wins, which would give us a pretty good record headed into the tournament. That said, I dunno if we're really going to be anywhere close to the tournament unless we can get more wins piled up later on in this season.

We're riding a four game win streak that began with our win with Utah. With that, we added wins against Air Force, Colorado State and Fresno State, the latter of which was 16-8 before the game started.

Here are our stats on the season. We're clearly not a team that plays defense, but our run and gun style of play is doing someting right.

After late February losses to Air Force and Tulsa, we squeaked out a W against Utah, we head into the conference tournament as the 4th seed.

Conference tournament is all set.

Before I get to that, here's the bubble watch. Notice that Seton Hall, the gig that I spurned to come to Yellowstone, is 20-8, rebounding from last year, by loading up on weak non-conference games and going 9-7 in the Big East to put themselves in good position to make the tourney.

But no matter, if we can notch a few wins, I like our chances.

The tournament seeds:

1. Gonzaga
2. Tulsa
3. BYU
4. Yellowstone
5. Utah
6. TCU
7. UNLV
8. Fresno State
9. Nevada
10. Air Force
11. Wyoming
12. New Mexico
13. Colorado State

We should get past CSU, which would get us a date against the winner of Utah/New Mexico. We've owned Utah this year for some reason, so I like our chances against them. The winner of that matchup would play the Gonzaga v. Fresno State/Nevada winner. Gonzaga would be a tall order, I think, given we simply haven't beaten a team of that caliber all year and so, I dunno. But that'd be the semi-finals and I dunno if two more wins would be enough to get us into the tournament.

It'll be a close one for sure, I think and it's hard to say how it'll pan out.

MWC TOURNAMENT QUARTER-FINALS

YELLOWSTONE 78, UTAH 70
It seems we've got their number this year. Rebounding was the name of the game, too. We outrebounded them 50-40, with major contributions from freshman Andrew Kazmbe, who logged a double double and William Moynihan, who did the same. We just played aggressive, Wolves basketball and we now have a date with Gonzaga in the next round of the tournament. The #15 Zags are going to be a formidible test.

We just got blown out in this one. We were down 50-26 in the first half. They're just better than us, really.

So I decided to see if I couldn't intervene and help things a bit. Probably not, but...I didn't know what else to do.

I decided to set the Pace to 10, Motion and 3pt usage to 10 as well. I decided not to double team anyone on their side, made Kazmbe a key player along with Moynihan and Ordonez and went with an Auto Defense, because the 3-2 clearly wasn't getting it done.

Sandy Ordonez fouled out with about six minutes to go and I replaced him with Allan Mendes who was like the least worst option we had on the bench anyway.

With about a minute to go, we were down 66-60. I think we put up a valiant effort and maybe if I'd intervened sooner we might have won this one, but it's obvious that we just don't have the horses to compete and run a system like that this year. Next year, maybe. But for now, we'll just have to wonder what might have been.

Final score: Gonzaga 68, Yellowstone 60.

Gonzaga won the Mountain West Conference tournament.

I decide to watch the NCAA Tournament selection show.

Here are the seeds by region:

Code:
WEST --- 1. Syracuse 2. Gonzaga 3. Oklahoma State 4. Ohio State 5. North Carolina 6. Notre Dame 7. Arizona 8. Temple 9. Iowa State 10. Iowa 11. Charlotte 12. Butler 13. Southern Illinois 14. Chicago 15. Oral Roberts 16. Bethune-Cookman

Code:
MIDWEST ---- 1. Kentucky 2. UCLA 3. Cincinnati 4. Texas 5. Maryland 6. Missouri 7. Indiana 8. Kent State 9. Wichita State 10. Utah 11. Western Kentucky 12. Villanova 13. Montana 14. Wisconsin-Milwaukee 15. UC Santa Barbara 16. Elon

At this point, I'm watching and it looks evident that we're not going to get in. It's hard to say, but I feel like we just don't have the resume, given that I can't see any at-large bids from our league of teams that should be in. Utah hasn't gotten in, neither has Tulsa yet. So, it's hard to say what it looks like for us, but it seems like we'll be dancing in the NIT. Which is fine, we'd probably get a lot further over there anyway.

Let's get to the rest of the brackets.

[i]So, one bracket to go. I don't see College of St. Charles and I don't see Tulsa. That's not good. The former, is probably hobbled by their crap conference and an upset loss in the early rounds of their tourney. But I didn't look to see how they did. Seton Hall got in, but they play in the Big East and we'd played a creampuff schedule to start the year, we'd be sitting pretty now too. In retrospect, we probably should have. Our RPI stinks and we lost too many pivotal games.

Seeing BYU get in, is a good sign, because that's two teams from our conference. But that's it. So..I dunno what to expect for this last bracket, but let's just go ahead and get it over with.

EAST
----
Code:
1. Duke 2. Kansas 3. Arkansas 4. Connecticut 5. Tennessee 6. St. John's 7. St. Bonaventure 8. College of St. Charles 9. Tulsa 10. Florida International 11. TCU 12. Princeton 13. Manhattan 14. Vermont 15. Alcorn State 16. Fairleigh Dickinson

TCU and Tulsa both get in. There goes CoStC as the 8th seed. They went 30-1 this year. But all of that and we didn't make it, of course. When I saw Tulsa as a #9, I knew we weren't going to get in.

So let's see what the NIT bracket is gonna look like for us, now that we're not in.

NATIONAL INVITATION TOURNAMENT

We're the #2 seed in the NIT's south Region bracket.

We get a bye in the first round, then we'll end up playing the winner of the Purdue (16-14) v. Northern Iowa (19-12) matchup. Fresno State is the #3 in this bracket, USC is the #1 seed at 19-13.

I think this is probably the sort of tournament we need to be in and it'll be better for our guys going into next year to win more games here, than going to the NCAA's and getting blown out after one round as a #14 seed or something.

Let's see if we can rebound and be successful here. Right now, you could say that I don't look good. I left St. Charles who are still soaring high, I turned down Seton Hall who are in the tournament and I'm just playing for pennies in the NIT.

But it could be worse, we could've not made the tournament at all. And I think our tough schedule is all about getting our kids mentally tough and about building something long-lasting.

I have the support of the administration and I have a strong recruit class coming in this next year, which will help. We need depth and I think we'll get there and it'll make it all better.

NIT SECOND ROUND

We're hosting a game against Northern Iowa in our first NIT game. We have a common opponent, as we both beat Nebraska.

I'd like to believe we can win this game, because we're battle tested.

Instead, we get upset by them 83-80 and our season is over.

This is just a disappointing year and I can't wait to get better assistants and get on the road and get more depth on our bench, because we're getting killed as it is.

I got job offers from Arizona State, Fordham, Mississippi State, Louisville, Richmond, USC, St. Joseph's and Vanderbilt.

I won't be accepting any of them.

We've been invited to the Preseason NIT as the 6th seed and we'll be going.

Maybe last year's rough schedule might have helped.

I owned it for years, but had to get my license from elicense, as I'd forgotten it long ago.
