This was a really sloppy win against a very bad team. We only led by three points at the half, and let a backup guard (with no rating higher than a 5) put up 16 points on us. Code:

Not really sloppy this time, we just got hammered inside. Wilson and Moungey were in foul trouble throughout and UTEP outrebounded us 43-27. We were also being heckled by some drunk UTEP fan. Still, with 1:36 left we took a 61-60 lead on a dunk by Moungey. Then we suffered misses by Nielsen, Bright, and Wilson in consecutive possessions, while UTEP hit their shots and took a 67-62 lead with 15 seconds left. Backup Elmer Clowers (who was in the game at this point for reasons that baffle me) hit a three pointer to pull us within 2. After UTEP hit one of two free throws, we came back down with a chance to tie it. And of all people to take the game tying three pointer, it was ... Rob Nielsen??? Of course he missed and we lost. The drunk UTEP fan went nuts and said something about "telling (his) friends on FOFC" whatever that means. Code:

Bright and Wilson combine for 41 points, 17 Rebounds, and 10 Assists in leading us to victory. Stanford actually shot 60% from the field to keep it close, but we beat them on the boards and forced 21 turnovers, allowing us to get off 21 more shots. Code:

Everybody showed up for a good ol fashioned butt whippin. Moungey put up a double-double in only 19 minutes. Code:

The Fab Five had a terrible afternoon. Because of fouble trouble, only Rob Nielsen played more than 21 minutes. Boston College took advantage of this and held a 46-45 lead early in the 2nd half. This was a big test for our unheralded bench, but they came through big. They shot a combined 60% from the field and hit on 11 of 14 free throws, mostly in the 2nd half and we were able to pull away. Nielsen and Moungey did combine for 10 steals. Code:

Lots of fouls in this one too, but at least nobody fouled out. After only leading by 10 at the half, we ripped SMU apart 51-26 in the 2nd half to cruise to victory. Nielsen had 5 steals again. Code:

UTEP at #1 Central Florida
With a 7-1 conference record, UTEP came into this game with hopes of winning the conference championship. Central Florida had other ideas. Obviously upset at the earlier loss, the Fab Five ran UTEP out of Orlando in stunning fashion. Central Florida jumped out to a 31-5 lead and built it up to as much as 68-18(!!!) before the dogs were called off. Moungey, Nielsen, and Provost (The Triplet Thieves) combined for 17 steals. Moungey has one of the best games of his career in the slaughter. He still can't hit free throws. Code:

#1 Central Florida at UAB
Now this is one worth writing about. We jumped out to a very quick lead and led 47-42 at the half. UAB kept fighting back. After we took a 57-51 lead with 13:27 left, UAB took advantage of poor shooting and turnovers to go on a 13-2 run for a 66-59 lead with 10:20 left. UAB kept the pressure on and we had trouble fighting back. With only 3:33 left, things were looking pretty grim as UAB led 84-77. Danny Wilson came up with a 3 pt play, and Moungey followed up with an inside shot to cut the deficit to 2 with 2:40 left. After the teams traded free throws, Wilson hit an inside shot to tie the game at 85 with 2:04 left. Both teams missed shots until Bright put us ahead 87-85 with 43 seconds left. UAB came right back down and tied it. With 13 seconds left, Provost found Moungey wide open at the top of the key, who drills the three to give us a 90-87 lead. Unfortunately, UAB's mediocre 3pt shooter (.222 on the year) hits a three at the buzzer to send the game into OT. We again came out quick and took a 97-92 lead with 2:53 left in OT. UAB went on a run and took the lead 100-98 with 13 seconds left. In a puzzling moment, UAB fouls Vincent Bright almost immediately after the inbounds pass. Bright hits both free throws to tie it and UAB misses their final shot, sending us into a 2nd OT. The 2nd OT was a back and forth affair. No team led by more than 2 pts at any time in the period. With 7 seconds left, a very controversial play took place. The score was tied at 108 and UAB had the ball. However, they were called for an illegal screen. Since UAB was in the penalty, that sent Danny Wilson to the line. Danny hit both free throws, and UAB missed a game winning three pointer at the buzzer. Code:

Marshall at #1 Central Florida
Here is another one where we underperformed. Moungey's 3 pointer with 13 seconds left put us in the lead and Marshall turned the ball over on the ensuing possession. We took 23 more shots than Marshall in this one but only won by 4 pts. We can't shoot this poorly in the tournament. Code:

UAB at #1 Central Florida
UAB gave us trouble once again. They just seem to know how to match up with us. Things didn't look good for us when Vincent Bright got into foul trouble very early and only played for 12 minutes. Thankfully, Provost stepped up with a 23 point game and Wilson was unstoppable inside. Still, UAB led 63-54 with 13:26 left, but we outscored them 31-13 the rest of the way. This was the regular season finale for the Fab Five. Code:

UAB at #1 Central Florida We can't seem to get rid of these guys. We played alot better in this one, leading almost the entire game and by as much as 14 int he 2nd half. However, UAB did make several runs to keep thigns interesting. With 3:33 left hit a basket to close within 3 at 83-80. We've never lost in the conference tourney, and this wasn't going to be the first time. A 13-2 run closed out the game and send us to round 2. Code:

Whoot! The march to another title continues! Way for me to have that stretch of 20+ point games and make some clutch three-point shots down the line And even when my point total started dropping, I picked it up by racking up my steals total again.
Go me!

Round 2: #9 Florida State vs. #1 Central Florida Not many people gave FSU much of a chance in this one, but they played us pretty tough in the 1st half, and were still within striking distance as the 2nd half began. However, we held them to only 10 pts. in the 2nd half by holding them to 33% from the field and the rest was academic. We were winning by so much we sent Danny to the bench early so he could get study for his upcoming exam. Code:

Bad News: We have another suspension.
Good News: It's not one of the Fab Five. SG Howard George has been suspended due to poor Academics and will not participate in the final 4. It will now be imperative for starting SG Vincent Bright to stay out of foul trouble.

The Final Four #3 Ohio State vs. #1 Central Florida Nielsen makes a basket to give us a quick 2-0 lead, but Ohio State quickly came back with a 7-1 run for a 7-3 lead. Bright hit a 3 pointer to put us within 1. Ohio State then went on an 8-0 run until Bright hit another three to make it 15-9. This is not so good. We can't keep resting on Bright's shooting to keep us in it. Ohio State goes on yet another run, this one 7-0 for a 22-9 lead. Our rebounding is atrocious so far. Ohio State is completely manhandling us and getting several second chances. Nielsen leaves the game due to early foul trouble. Things looking pretty bleak with 12:09 left in the half. Ohio State builds their lead to 26-14 until we can get some rhythm going. An 11-3 run puts us within four, but it's mostly on free throws. We can't seem to hit anything from the field and the rebounding hasn't improved. Still, we manage to match Ohio State for the rest of the half and go to the locker with a 34-30 deficit. We start the half with baskets by Bright and Moungey to tie the score at 34. The bad news is that Nielsen has already picked up his 4th foul and there's still 18:47 left. We miss our next 5 shots from the field and Ohio State now has a 43-34 lead with 14:56 left. Provost, the only Golden Knight that seems to be awake, cuts the lead to 46-40 after a layup. However, Ohio State clearly wasn't intimidated by us and went on a 13-2 run for a 59-42 lead with 9:25 left in the game. It was desperation time for the Golden Knights. Moungey and Provost get the comeback going by hitting consecutive three pointers, which Provost follows up with a steal and layup. This put us within 12, but time was our enemy. We only had 6:52 left to save our season. We can't make a run until Provost finds Moungey for a basket with 4:45 left, cutting the lead to 9. We manage to stop Ohio State on their next three possessions, but Provost misses two three pointers. (Bright's shooting was so atrocious that he wasn't an option at this point). Nielsen finally re-enters the game with only 3:49 left, and comes up with a steal leading to a Moungey layup, then follows it up with his own basket. Now we have some life! With only 3:00 left, we're down 69-64. Ohio State called a timeout to calm things down. They make a basket on their next possession to pull ahead by 7. Moungey misses a free throw (in a 1&1 situation), and Ohio State splits free throws on their next two trips (Wilson missed a shot in between) to take a 73-64 lead with 1:50 left. Even worse, the two fouls on those two trips were the 5th for both Wilson and Bright. Provost quickly hits a shot from the top of the key to put us back within 7 with 1:40 left. Ohio State splits free throws yet again to take a 74-66 lead with 1:24 to go. We still have a shot to get back in this one! The next two possessions were key: Code:
It can't really be happening, can it? Sadly, it is so. Provost hits a three as the final sick seconds tick down and we suffer a 76-69 defeat.
