FOFC Stock Car Challenge: In the beginning

Ok folks, I loaded NASCAR Season 2003 back up on my laptop and felet like messing around with things and remembered that a lot of you really enjoyed our old league. So, I'm going to take the first come first served requests to fill in rides in my new dynasty. I'll be doing the simming and writing up race reports.

I will take the first 5 people to request a car and Number (I will post a list of those available below but feel free to get your requests in before that if you know a car you want.) The cars will be those that have run in the Winston Cup series over the last decade or so. (Yes winston cup, this sprint cup shit is for pussies)

All the engine/car/pit crew scores will be standardized for every car in the field.

The drivers stats will be generated by random.org and will not be made public.

The first season will pit 5 rookie FOFC drivers against 5 randomly selected real drivers with their stats modiied from an old list I found based on an online leagues re-creation of a real season.

As the season goes along players will gain/lose points within their stats based on performance. (random.org will be used liberally but for small effect at any given change)

So, who wants their name in the game? I will be using your FOF username for simplicity's sake.

Alrighty folks, we have 15 cars for our inaugural season. The teams in bold are FOFC drivers, the teams in Red are fillers.

The season will be 15 races on 15 different tracks determined randomly.

Each race will be at 25% of its standard length to represent this as the rookie level of racing.

Stats for each driver (including the fillers) are set at 40-60 (max of 0-100)
Stats for engines/cars/pitcrews are all 100-100 Maxed out to keep things even.

As I run the races I will award points for the following:

pole position: 10 points
Outside Pole: 5 points
Lead most laps: 10 points
Lead any single lap: 5 points
Positions gained during event : 1 point per position
positions lost during event: -1 per position
Race win: 10 points
Finish 2-5: 5 points
Finish 6-10: 3 Points
Finish on lead lap: 1 point (positions 11 and down but on lead lap)
Finishing laps down: -1 point or each lap down (This only affects cars that are RUNNING at the end of the race, those out due to engine failures or accidents will not incur this penalty)

These points will be then added into your drivers stats based on the type of track followed by a random.org spin.

Drivers losing points will lose them the same way.

There will be advancement and relegation in the future if/when enough new people join up to create a second group of 15 drivers. The top 2 drivers each season will advance, the bottom 2 will fall to the lower level.

I'll dpo random snap shots from time to time. I will also post shots of everyone's car's at some point.

more to come!

Race Number 1 is in the Books.

One of the Drones, Ernie Irvan, stole the show early leading 29 laps. On laps 29 and 30 pit stops were made by all teams and the field got shuffled. Irvan couldn't get back up to the front and finished 2nd. Only 2 FOFC drivers cracked the top 5. Clean race, 50 laps at Texas Motor Speedway. Links to results below.

Winner of the Texas Race: PurdueBrad!!

NR 2003 Season is the best real simulator/game ever made. You can probably find it for dirt cheap on ebay or free to download somewhere if you look around a bit.

Race Number 2 is in the Books.

This was a race of segments, early on it was CoffeeWarlord leading the way to be overtaken by BYU14. After the first round of pitstops BYU simply dominated. The second set of pitstops shook up the standings a bit but no one had anything for that mountain Dew car as BYU14 simply ran roughshod over the North Carolina Race track.

Yes, thats how I run this game =) Basically you go into it as if you were driving an extra car (in our case I add the game default #86 car) but when teh race starts you don't click on drive you just let the game run and watch the fun.

Its the last version of the ultimate nascar simulator. EA bought out the rights from NASCAR and their version sucks ass, is a kiddy game. Papyrus is the only company that should have ever touched a NASCAR sim. Thats why its still pricey. Keep looking though, you can find one cheap somewhere.

I was the only driver to LOSE points in this race. Man my car sucked ass. The most points you can gain in any given event is 34. Start last, Win and lead the most laps.

Starting on the pole, winning and leading the most laps only gets you 30.

Okay a couple of questions for you NASCAR guys. How does NASCAR 2002 compare? Can you do some kind of a career sim with this if not is there a game out there that allows you to. I am not so much concerned with the graphics being top of the line. After playing around with demo for 2003 i am intrigued and thought it might be cool to mess around with.

2002 is just the previous incarnation of 03, its the same engine ad pretty much the same simpulation. The big upgrades from 2002 to 2003 were graphics and updating for a new group of drivers. You can do everything the same way tiwh 2002 that I am doing with this one.

You basically run one season at a time, If you want to track data of=ver multiple seasons you have to make sure you export your results after each race (it generates html files like the ones I linked above) The game itself does not track much of anything, IE you can't go into anything IN the game and see everyone's statistics over the life of the driver.

So I guess the answer is, its single season at a time and any data mining you want to do you have to generate on your own.

Race Number 3 is in the Books.

RendeR has had a rough couple races so far, but this week it was ALL the big guy as the Exxon Chevrolet not only blistered the field to take the pole position, but led 38 of the 67 laps to take home the win!! Top points gained by way of the polr position for the first time this season. BYU14 and his Mountain Dew team tried valiantly to use strategy to enhance their chances. Pitting 4 laps after everyone else during the first cycle and trying to stay out and steal the win at the end of the race, only to fall 3 laps short on fuel and have to pit. Returning the lead to RendeR who pulled away from Damnmikebrown and PurduBrad for his first Victory of the year.

Winner of the Las Vegas Race: RendeR!!!

It interesting watching the cars interact on the track. The stats are all nearly identical but some cars have good days and are obviously stronger than others. I love the sim engine behind tihs.

A couple major Announcements were made this weekend at atlanta motor Speedway:

Mountain Dew representative Rapid Q Spasm stood with Driver BYU14 and other members of the #14 team and announced that they have re-upped their sponsorship deal for next season. Spasm spoke jerkily and quickly when he said "Dude wins, DO THE DEW!" after which is pounded a 1 liter bottle and passed out cold on the stage.

After the race another team got word that its sponsor would return as well. In Victory LANE. Crown Royal Chief executives were on hand for the Atlanta event and after watching their driver, PurdueBrad, dominate the race and hold off a HUGE effort by the Exxon team at the every end for the win said "This is our man, we're gonna ride this boy all the way to the top!"

Two teams, 3 wins between them and two sponsorships locked in for 2009.

Race Number 4 is in the Books.

It looked as if the smart remarks and "We're #1" attitude of the Crown Royal Ford team was going to come up short today. The Exxon #51 Chevy twice came roaring back from large time deficits on the track but the second time just came up a bit short.

The start of the event was quite calm and the cars ran single file most of the way. PB pulled out to a 3 second lead and it looked like a runaway show. Then around lap 16 RendeR's Impala simply took off like a rocketship. He cut the lead away 2 and 3 tenths of a second at a time. Finally taking the lead from PB.

Everyone made pit stops betwee laps 29 and 33 and the field settled back in and as luck would have it, PB was again 2+ seconds ahead and he held it for awhile until again RendeR flipped some switch and his car rocketed forward to take the lead.

Pitstops on lap 58 set the field up for the final run, 20 laps to the finish. PB came out fast and again had a 2.60 second lead. RendeR lay in second trying to cut into that lead. Unfortunately for the rest of the field it bacame a two horse race. 3rd place CofeeWarlord was almost 6 seconds behind RendeR.

So the laps wound down. 18, 15, 14 to go and the lead had dwindled to 1.6 seconds. 10 to go and still PB held a 1.2 second lead. 8, 6, 5, 4 laps to go and here came RendeR only .97 seconds back. 2 to go and the lead was merely a half SECOND...the final lap was a dead sprint for both cars, RendeR closed in but simply couldn;t catch PB at the line.

Victory for PurdueBrad and the Crown Royal FORD!

Not all the news was good today, outside Pole sitter SirFozzie was suffering from Flu like symptoms and it showed today as he went from the outside pole to dead last during the race. He showed some spark and grit during the event but lets just say this is a day SirFozzie would rather soon forget.
