Go Wolves! Yellowstone University Basketball (FBCB)

The primary intent of this dynasty is to profile the life and times at Yellowstone University, a fictional institution that I've created in Cody, Wyoming.

As a new school on the block, with deep pockets, Yellowstone is trying to distinguish itself, using the iconic name of the national park to drive the university into the big time in basketball and football.

I'll detail the football part in another dynasty, but this dynasty will focus primarily on the basketball program and it's rise from mid-major to national power.

The Mountain West Conference is aligned in two divisions of eight teams for basketball, making it the only other 16-team power basketball conference in the country.

Here's what it looks like:
Quote:
EAST
Air Force
Yellowstone
Colorado State
Houston
TCU
Tulsa
Wyoming
New Mexico

WEST
Boise State
BYU
Fresno State
Gonzaga
Nevada
San Diego State
UNLV

After creating my mega basketball conference, there was the matter of figuring out a conference alignment that worked.

After rankling with it for a while, I came up with an alignment that worked me. What I did was, cannibalize parts of Conference USA and the WAC with the Mountain West.

What we ended up with, are two conferences called the Mountain Athletic and the new Western Athletic Conference which are managed by the Mountain West Conference. The WAC agreed to the deal, because it gave the opportunity to keep their football operation alive, for fear the MWC would take their best teams somehow and render them meaningless in football.

So here are the new conferences:

MOUNTAIN ATHLETIC
Quote:
Boise State
BYU
Air Force
TCU
Utah
Fresno State
New Mexico
Tulsa
Nevada

The new WAC is a 12-team conference with a championship game and two divisions

Quote:
WAC PRESIDENTS DIVISION
San Diego State
Wyoming
UNLV
Colorado
Hawaii
San Jose State

WAC GOVERNORS DIVISION
Southern Miss
SMU
Yellowstone
Houston
UTEP
Rice

Conference USA is now a ten-team league of castoffs from all over America.
Quote:
Tulane
LA Tech
Utah State
Memphis
Central Florida
Marshall
New Mexico State
Idaho
UAB
ECU

Fast Break College Basketball: Starting out under the rim

In basketball, I won't even be starting at YU. I'm going to start at a tiny school in South Hill, Virginia called the College of St. Charles.

The school has an enrollment of about 1,450 students. St. Charles was founded in 1936 by five members of the community, comprised of two former slave owners and three former slaves, who eventually became property owners and two of them, the parents of college graduates. Their idea was a humble one, but ambitious plan to create an institution that prepared students for careers and for life. The Saint Charles School grew and in 1943, was approved by the state to begin awarding bachelors degrees.

The school integrated, with its first white students attending in 1959, as the parents of five northern professors enrolled their students at the institution. There was never an explicit rule that prevented the institution from only accepting blacks, but no local whites would send their students to the school, though many were supportive of its mission, due to the "goodwill" the students brought to the area, as well as the money their families spent in remittances and later, as visitors to their children at the campus.

The 63-acre campus isn't intended to be the most grand or celebrated place, it's simply a good school for people who want to learn and live life right. That's the school's motto. "Opus ferreus quod vado vox via" or loosely translated "work hard and go the right way."

The school supports itself by recruiting heavily around the globe, through several international grants, as the school was a pioneer in the 1960s at recruiting students, via its work program which has become well known the world over. Students pay only for incidental expenses such as textbooks. Tuition, room, and board are covered by scholarships.

The school will begin its newfound life as a Division I school, after completing the probationary period. The school will start its first season as a D1 school as an independent, but hopes to join a conference in due time.

Now, I've never done a basketball dynasty that I can remember and so, I'm going to have to figure out how best to organize this thing.

The hardest thing to do as an independent is get games. We're going to be shaking the trees to get anyone we can to check us out and get us a ballgame, if we can. The whole idea behind this thing, is the fact that we're a school that can 'woo' people to come play against us, etc., we're not a bottom of the barrel D-1 school or else, the story wouldn't work.

We're not really partial to schools that are lower of the rung, because while it seems unlikely we can make it to the tournament, we'd like to at least have a winning record this first season and see what we can do from there.

So with that, here's our final schedule for the 2014-15 season.

I don't coach my games in text-sims, I find it tedious. Instead, I'm all about the results, so I'll give you all a game-by-game and try to talk highlights and such, but...that's it.

That said, if people give me suggestions about lineup stuff or anything else, I'd be likely to take it. I'm still trying to wrap my head around this game.

Our starting lineup heading into the season is comprised of:

Quote:
C Blanc
PF Diorio
SF Young
SG Jones
PG O'Sullivan

With a friendship spanning over thirty years, the coach at Duke agreed to usher in his pal's new team's first game as a full member in D1.

But no one really expects that the Beagles would win, right?

After the Duke win, people started talking about the little college from South Hill. Maybe these boys were serious?

Next game is against Seattle University, who replaced Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference when the Zags went to the Mountain West.

Despite a 46-38 lead at halftime, the Beagles ran out of gas on the road and ceded their first game of the season, to the Texas Longhorns 87-80.

Claud Jones continues to impress, going 25 points on 9 of 16 shooting.

Texas took the lead early in the second half and the game remained close into about 8 minutes to go, before the Longhorns took the lead for good and never looked back.

To reduce the stat dumpy feel of the dynasty, I'll only do the boxscores to games against opponents that are interesting or when we get upset or lose.

Recruiting, we're looking strictly at foreign players at the moment, as well as a few local targets. No real news on anyone yet, as our prestige is deterring the stars from being super interested and so, we're scraping for something that works.

Now, we're headed on a swing around Boston area and we drop our first game of that three game road trip and we drop the game. Turnovers are a huge problem for the team, still. No real need to panic, though.

The Orange won with a last second shot, after the team went for a three-pointer and missed and the team went for a dunk, made it and won the game.

The Beagles were up 40-27 at halftime and managed to blow the game.

With a dearth of games left on the regular season schedule and no post-season tournament to speak of, I'm going to go ahead and sim to the conference tournaments and see what we can find out. As always, if you're interested in knowing about a particular team, lemme know.

I'll do a cursory runthrough of the rest of the league and talk about interesting things, before getting down to the tournament brackets and seeing where we'll lineup.

I'd like to believe that our performance this year, would merit us a low seed in the NCAA tournament. But our goal is just to make a postseason tourney, so the NIT would be just fine.

The play-in game is Alabama State (14-17) versus UMKC (12-19), both of whom won their conference tournaments to get here, ensuring a team with a losing record will play in the main draw.

Our schedule this season was the 188th ranked schedule in the country, our RPI was 35, though.

We face off against the Virginia Cavaliers, who had an RPI of 29 and had the 49th ranked schedule in the country.

Common opponents between the two schools:

Rutgers L 72-69
Boston College W 83-57
Duke L 94-65

We beat two of three common opponents between us, though they beat BC and we lost to them.

We're obviously not battle tested compared to an ACC team, so we're not sure what to expect.

The Cavs season stats are as follows:

On paper, I think we match up better against them, in that, Edward Blanc is simply a guy that they don't have an answer for. He's a monster on the boards, he scores points and so, up the middle they're just gonna have to figure out how to handle him. Claud Jones is known to be a big-game solution and I expect him to put it down.

They have way more balance offensively, but I don't really think that it matters that much in the end, because if our boys show up and do what they're capable of -- forcing turnovers, playing lock-down defense and scoring points at will -- we'll get out of this matchup.

The winner of this game plays the winner of #2 St. Johns and #15 Hampton and I think we matchup well against those teams too. So really, we're angling for a Sweet 16 appearance, but it'll really rest on our ability not to blow this game when we manage to get a lead and to put them away when it matters most, which we struggled with at times during the year.

Let's see how it goes.

UMKC won the play-in game, beating Alabama State 57-48.

FIRST ROUND GAME: Virginia v. College of St. Charles

I knew it would be a tight battle, just given the way everything looked.

We were up 38-29 at halftime, but I wasn't really expecting that lead to last. UVa could never really get a big enough lead to put the game out of reach. They led by 2 with 4 1/2 minutes to go, before the Beagles began to press into action.

With 26 seconds left, Virginia made two free throws to get within two (61-63), but rather than letting St. Charles run the clock out or attempt a shot, they fouled. Wiley O'Sullivan of St. Charles made both free throws, making the score 65-61. The Beagles defense held the Cavaliers from attempting a three pointer with about 4 seconds to go, that they missed and the Beagles will advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament!

Final score, 65-61 St. Charles.

2ND ROUND PREVIEW:

The Red Storm of St. John's finished the season 30-4 and went 15-1 in the Big East. So to say that it'll be a strong test would be an understatement. They're a strong team on the boards and their point guard Carson Leigh is a threat scoring the rock or distributing it to his teammates.

It'll be an interesting matchup for us. I think the trick here is going to be, that we need to simply outrun them and to minimize our mistakes.

I feel like we can win it, but it'll come down to our players being able to manage the game and to not give up bad shots.

NCAA Tournament 2nd Round: College of St. Charles 82, St. John's 63

An 18-0 run early in the second half was the difference in this ballgame, as the Beagles advance to the Sweet 16. Beagles coach Matt Carey has been dogged by rumors that several teams are interested in interviewing him after the season is over and are "waiting for his team to lose, so they can begin to interview him. They're like vultures..." said one source.

Schools showing interest include Rutgers, Georgia and Seton Hall. Also, the Beagles are expected to get hounded by offers of conferences looking to have them join after this season, on the heels of their successful run. But it's not clear yet whether they'll join a conference or which one they'll join.

"We're just enjoying our ride and we're not planning to go home yet," said Coach Carey.

Here are the Sweet 16 Matchups:

WEST REGION
----
(8) Western Kentucky v. (4) Arkansas
(2) Maryland v. (6) Arizona

MIDWEST REGION
-----------
(1) Illinois v. (5) UCLA
(2) Syracuse v. (3) Stanford

(1) Kentucky v. (4) Cincinnati
(2) Michigan State v. (3) Duke

EAST REGION
------------
(1) Miami v. (4) Oklahoma State
(10) St. Charles v. (3) Florida

So needless to say, we busted a bracket, as did Western Kentucky. Let's see how far we can keep the run going.

SWEET 16 PREVIEW: Florida v. St. Charles

Florida went 30-6 this year, including a 14-2 record in the SEC. Their losses this year were against Pepperdine (1st game of the year), Oklahoma on the road, Illinois on the road, Kentucky on the road, Alabama and then Kentucky in th SEC tournament. Needless to say they're battle tested and we're not Kentucky.

The key to beating them will be similar to St. John's. Force turnovers like mad. We've been doing it all year and that's how we've made it this far. Our offense knows how to show up and so, if we can manage to keep them off the board, we'll muscle our way through this. But I think it's a formidible challenge and really, it's hard to say what'll happen in this one, as I don't have any real clues to know what it'll look like.

My guys are capable of beating top-tier talent, as they've done throughout the year, but also lapse massively at times when they ought to keep their composure.

We'll see how it goes.

We were down by 12 with about 3:16 to go and that really spelled doom in my mind, as I wasn't convinced we had enough juice to get back in the game and I ended up being right.

After being down 43-22 at halftime, the fact that we made it close at all, is a testament to the resolve of the kids on my team.

We played hard and really, we jsut couldn't get our game in check all night. We had 21 turnovers, which is just not Beagles basketball and they only had 10, which is anti-gameplan.

So our tournament run is over, which is sad, but we've got a lot to build on now and that's an exciting thing.

OFF THE HOOK

The following schools have called me up, literally 24-hours after we lost that game.

Quote:
Southern Mississippi
DePaul
Seton Hall
Michigan
Oregon

That list wasn't exciting, but most of the schools I might be interested in talkng with, are waiting until the tournament is over to make moves. So I agree only to meet with Seton Hall off that list. I want a safety school, I know the area well and I think it's a job I can get and they'll pay, as I know that St. Charles just doesn't really have it in the budget to pay much more than the terms of my contract will give me for making the tournament.

So I agree to meet with them Monday.

SETON HALL INTERVIEW

The Pirates were 16-16 last year, finishing 6th in their division of the Big East last year, going 6-10 in league play.

They lost in the 1st round of the Big East tournament to Georgetown 67-47 and lost to UL-Lafayette in the first round of the NIT 58-50.

This job would be a fixer-upper for sure, as the roster contains four seniors and three juniors.

In short, while I appreciated that they were really interested and I feel like if I want the job, I can have it, I'm probably going to have to pass. This team -- while in the Big East -- isn't an improvement over what I have now.
