The Legend of '83 - a FOF2K7 historical dynasty

In this dynasty I will be using Nilodor's historical roster and draft files. I will be starting in the year 1983, just after the legendary draft class that historically produced six hall of famers out of the first round. I will follow the best rookies out of the class and see if their careers in FOF match how well they did in real life.

One drawback is that we can't change the league format, so all the teams that historically came in after 83, the Panthers/Jaguars/Ravens/Texans, will be in the league. I have changed their franchise names and will presume that they all entered the league in 1983. So in addition to the historical teams we will have the:

El Paso Warriors
Jacksonville Rowdies
Indianapolis Mustangs
Carolina Wildcats

Also, if you have a favorite class of 1983 player who isn't here, ask me and I'll see how he's doing!

1983 Start

John Elway, QB – Denver Broncos

Elway was taken #1 overall in the 1983 draft, after the Broncos traded with the Baltimore Colts who took guard Chris Hinton. My good scout grades him 28/91 at the start of the season. The Broncos have him pegged as their starter, and right now he looks like he could be a legend. He will have capable WR Steve Watson and not a whole lot else in terms of targets this year.

Eric Dickerson, RB – Los Angeles Rams

Eric was taken at #2 overall by the Rams who are desperate for a quality running back. My very good scout rates him 54/80 and he will be the starter for the Rams. He will have a mostly very solid offensive line to run behind, led by C Mike Smith.

Curt Warner, RB – Seattle Seahawks

Warner was selected #3 overall by the Seahawks. My very good scout grades him 28/48 – he's got a lot of power but doesn't appear to be the complete package. Seattle's line has some holes so he will have to make do this season.

Bruce Matthews, G – Houston Oilers

Bruce was selected at #9 and looks like a great prospect, as even our poor scout grades him at 30/66. He will start this year and shore up Houston's line.

Jim Kelly, QB – Buffalo Bills

Kelly looks to have a lot of talent, though he is raw right now, rated 18/67 by my scout. He was taken at the #14 spot. He will probably start this year anyway, with veteran Joe Ferguson available to take over if needed.

Ken O'Brien, QB – New York Jets
Ken has some potential, and is scouted 14/48 by my scout. He will most likely back up QB Richard Todd for the Jets this year.

Dan Marino, QB – Miami Dolphins

Marino was drafted with the 27th pick in the first round. He has all kinds of talent, and is scouted 23/72. With some development time he could be a great one, and he should start this year.

Darrell Green, CB – Washington Redskins

Darrell was selected with the last pick of the first round. He is currently scouted at 27/71 and should start for the Redskins.

Henry Ellard, WR – Los Angeles Rams

The Rams may have struck gold with the #4 pick in the second round. My average scout rates Ellard at 33/63 and he will get a chance to show his stuff this year.

Leonard Marshall, DE – New York Giants

Leonard was taken at #9 in the second round, and looks to be a very promising DE out of LSU. Our average scout grades him at 29/60 and he has plenty of room to grow. He will start at left end for the Giants.

Darryl Talley, LB – Buffalo Bills

Darryl has potential, and is rated 23/55. He looks like a strong hitter who can improve in other areas of the game.

Roger Craig, RB – San Francisco 49ers

Roger was drafted deep into the 2nd round, but looks like a great pickup. Our scout rates him 45/67, and he should provide an immediate option for QB Joe Montana, as he is elusive and can catch the ball well.

Richard Dent, DE – Chicago Bears

Dent wasn't taken until the eighth round, but it looks like the Bears got a real steal here. Our average scout thinks he has a ton of potential and grades him 40/90. It should be fun to watch him play.

Mark Clayton, WR – Miami Dolphins

Mark was taken at the end of round 8, and should give rookie Dan Marino a great target. Our average scout rates Clayton at 34/65, and along with rookie Anthony Carter and 2nd year man Mark Duper, the Dolphins look to have one explosive receiving unit.

Anthony Carter, WR – Miami Dolphins

Anthony fell almost out of the draft, taken in round 12 with the second to last pick. (The historical rosters can't account for the USFL. Of course in real life AC was dealt to the Vikings where he made his name, but what if he had stayed with Miami? Craaaazy.) Our average scout rates him at 44/70.

1983 Season End

In the Super Bowl, the veteran Steelers made an impressive drive led by Terry Bradshaw and Franco Harris. They would face off against a polar opposite of sorts, the San Francisco 49ers. In the end the 49ers won the Super Bowl on a 19 yard Freddie Solomon touchdown pass with 47 seconds left on the clock, 24-23.

Top Performers

Ron Jaworski threw for 4,524 yards and 41 touchdowns.
Walter Payton led the league in rushing with 1,961 yards and 11 TDs.
John Jefferson led all receivers with 103 catches for 1,628 yards and 14 touchdowns
Eddie Edwards of the Bengals led the league with 27.5 sacks

John Elway, QB – Denver Broncos

Elway stayed on the bench this year as Steve Deberg ran the offense for the Broncos. He finished 6-11 for 56 yards on the season.

Eric Dickerson, RB – Los Angeles Rams

Eric had a great rookie season, and came very close to winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. In only 14 starts he had 273 carries for 1286 yards and 8 touchdowns. He also had 245 receiving yards and two touchdowns. He is going to be very hard to stop.

Curt Warner, RB – Seattle Seahawks

Curt didn't start this year, but got a good amount of play as the second back. He looked good, finishing with 148 carries for 646 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Bruce Matthews, G – Houston Oilers

Despite several injuries, Bruce started every game this year, with 19 of 38 key run blocks and allowed 5 sacks. He's definitely growing into a special player.

Jim Kelly, QB – Buffalo Bills

The Bills decided to let Joe Ferguson start this year, with Jim as backup. He saw minimal work, endind up 30-65 for 268 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception

Ken O'Brien, QB – New York Jets

Ken was second QB most of the year but got to play a bit. He started four games, and finished 70-122 for 610 yards, with 3 touchdowsn and 1 interception. He doesn't appear to have the awesome talent of many on this list but should be a solid player.

Dan Marino, QB – Miami Dolphins

Dan was handed the ball from Day 1, and started 15 games this year, missing one due to injury. He was hesitant at times and threw a good many interceptions, but a pretty good year overall. He finished 294-486 for 2,921 yards, with 17 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

Darrell Green, CB – Washington Redskins

Darrell impressed the Redskins and their fans this year, starting 15 games and ending up with 3 interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, along with 66 tackles, 12 assists, and 2 sacks.

Henry Ellard, WR – Los Angeles Rams

Henry led the Rams in receiving this year with 51 catches for 745 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also returned kicks all year.

Leonard Marshall, DE – New York Giants

Leonard was the #2 man at his position this year, and recorded 4 tackles and 3 assists on the year.

Darryl Talley, LB – Buffalo Bills

Daryl was a backup this year and rarely saw the field. He had 6 tackles and an assist in minimal play.

Roger Craig, RB – San Francisco 49ers

Roger proved a perfect fit for the new style 49ers offense. He pounded opponents, running for 1272 yards on 297 carries for 9 touchdowns. He also added 279 receiving yards and a touchdown. He was named 1983 Rookie of the Year and won a championship ring, even scoring on a 4 yard run in the Super Bowl.

Richard Dent, DE – Chicago Bears

Dent started all year across from Dan Hampton, and was very effective. He ended up with 50 tackles, 17 assists, 9 hurries, and 4.5 sacks on the year. The Bears think he could end up a monster before he's through.

Mark Clayton, WR – Miami Dolphins

Mark was used sparingly this year, he had some injury problems. He caught 17 passes for 268 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Anthony Carter, WR – Miami Dolphins

Anthony showed a lot of explosiveness this year, catching 38 passes from rookie QB Dan Marino for 564 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also returned punts with some success.

Notable Draft Results

Steve Young, QB – El Paso Warriors
Warren Moon, QB – Buffalo Bills
Earnest Byner, RB – Indianapolis Mustangs
Boomer Esiason, QB – New England Patriots
Irving Fryar, WR – Baltimore Colts

John Elway, QB – Denver Broncos

John was sent to play in the summer league and has improved, but the Broncos used their franchise tag to keep Steve Deberg from leaving the team. Personally I'd start Elway but the Broncos seem to want to wait a bit.

Eric Dickerson, RB – Los Angeles Rams

Eric is ready to go for another good year.

Curt Warner, RB – Seattle Seahawks

Curt looks like the best of an average bunch of RBs and should get his chance to run this year.

Bruce Matthews, G – Houston Oilers

Bruce was the extremely rare o-lineman that was sent to summer league to improve. He will start again this year.

Jim Kelly, QB – Buffalo Bills

Jim was sent to summer league, but then his team drafted excellent prospect Warren Moon. Things aren't looking too good for him now, as Moon is much more developed and looks like he may start this year. Joe Ferguson is still in the mix as well.

Ken O'Brien, QB – New York Jets

Ken will probably back up Richard Todd again this year.

Dan Marino, QB – Miami Dolphins

Dan went to summer league, has improved and is looking forward to a new season.

Darrell Green, CB – Washington Redskins

Darrell is back for another season as the Redskins top corner.

Henry Ellard, WR – Los Angeles Rams

Henry should be the top target for the Rams this year. They got rid of mediocre QB Vince Ferragamo, and replaced him with mediocre QB Jeff Kemp.

Leonard Marshall, DE – New York Giants

Leonard looks to be in position to start this year, but he thought so last year too.

Darryl Talley, LB – Buffalo Bills

Darryl will have to fight for a starting spot this year, the Bills have several quality linebackers.

Roger Craig, RB – San Francisco 49ers

Roger had an unbelievable year last year and is ready to go again.

Richard Dent, DE – Chicago Bears

Dent is ready to rock for another season. He and Dan Hampton should tear up opposing QBs.

Mark Clayton, WR – Miami Dolphins

Mark looks good, but hopes to see more playing time this year.

Anthony Carter, WR – Miami Dolphins

AC is ready for another year, bigger and better. He re-signed with the Dolphins for a four year, $4 million contract.

1984 Season End

In the Super Bowl, the Green Bay Packers faced off against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Packers won, 38-28, behind four touchdown passes thrown by QB Lynn Dickey.

Top Performers

Walter Payton led the league in rushing with 1,819 yards.
Lynn Dickey was the best QB this year, throwing for 4,820 yards and 37 touchdowns.
James Lofton profited from Dickey's year big-time – 108 catches for 2,027 yards and 13 TDs.
Dexter Manley led the league with 24.5 sacks.

John Elway, QB – Denver Broncos

John was the starter for the Broncos all season, and he really impressed a lot of people, completing 65% of his passes for 3,348 yards, with 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Eric Dickerson, RB – Los Angeles Rams

Eric ran the ball well this year, racking up 228 carries for 1,002 yards, with 6 touchdowns. Unfortunately he only started 12 games before going down with a major knee injury. He will need ACL surgery, and the Rams are hoping he'll bounce back next year.

Curt Warner, RB – Seattle Seahawks

Curt ended up as a backup again this year, but ran well, with 130 carries for 525 yards and 5 touchdowns. He added two more touchdowns in the receiving game.

Bruce Matthews, G – Houston Oilers

Bruce was a full-year starter again this year, and had 21 out of 71 key run blocks, and allowed 6 sacks. He's already become the best player on the Oiler offensive line.

Jim Kelly, QB – Buffalo Bills

Jim was the #2 behind Warren Moon this year, and ended up starting 4 games, and completing 97 passes for 973 yards, with 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

Ken O'Brien, QB – New York Jets

Ken didn't start any games this year, and finished with 29 completions for 326 yards, and 2 touchdowns, 4 interceptions.

Dan Marino, QB – Miami Dolphins

Dan broke 3,000 yards passing this year, completing 57.8% of his passes for 3,040 yards, with 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He's still developing as a player but already looks great.

Darrell Green, CB – Washington Redskins

Darrell was a top tier performer this year, and was rewarded as the First Team All-Pro Cornerback. In 15 games he had 5 interceptions, defensed 22 passes, and had 50 tackles, 18 assists, and 2 sacks.

Henry Ellard, WR – Los Angeles Rams

Henry stepped up this year and looked great, with 70 catches for 1,039 yards and an impressive 12 touchdowns.

Leonard Marshall, DE – New York Giants

Leonard fought his way to a starting spot at left end this year, and immediately impressed his team. He had 43 tackles, 13 assists, 8 hurries, and 8.5 sacks this year, along with 8 blocked passes.

Darryl Talley, LB – Buffalo Bills

Darryl started 15 games this season, and ended up #2 on the defense with 62 tackles, 26 assists, and 3.5 sacks. He also showed his versatility by defensing 9 passes.

Roger Craig, RB – San Francisco 49ers

Roger had a similar year to last year, recording 1,187 yards on 269 carries, with 9 touchdowns. He missed two games at the end of the season but can rack up the yardage. He hasn't done as much in the passing game as many expected, though, catching 35 passes for 235 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Richard Dent, DE – Chicago Bears

Dent stepped up his game this year, especially in the pass rush, and ended the year with 38 tackles, 14 assists, 21 hurries, and 9.5 sacks. He's already become a feared defender.

Mark Clayton, WR – Miami Dolphins

Mark got more playing time than last year but not as much as he'd like, catching 37 balls for 558 yards and 2 TDs.

Anthony Carter, WR – Miami Dolphins

AC split duties with Mark Clayton and neither put up impressive numbers this year – Anthony had 34 catches for 380 yards and 4 TDs.

I'm going to combine each yearly update into one from now on, should be easier to read and I can include more details, like the teams' records. Let me know if you'd like to see anything else.

Wow, I forgot how much talent was in that class.

I know he wasn't part of the class, but you mind throwing in an occasional Jim McMahon update?

Sure - it's definitely not a pretty picture for McMahon. He's one of those QBs who has potential, but he hasn't gotten his shot yet. The Bears released him after one backup season, then he's spent two years with Cleveland holding the clipboard, and now will probably be on another team next year.

Notable Draft Results

Reggie White, DE – Miami Dolphins, #1 overall
Bernie Kosar, QB – Carolina Wildcats, #3 overall
Lomas Brown, OT – New Orleans Saints, #4 overall
Randall Cunningham, QB – St. Louis Cardinals, #5 overall
Bruce Smith, DE – New York Giants, #6 overall
Herschel Walker, RB – Baltimore Colts, #7 overall
Jerry Rice, WR – Minnesota Vikings, #21 overall
Andre Reed, WR – Carolina Wildcats, #34 overall
Doug Flutie, QB – Cincinnati Bengals, #91 overall

The Cincinnati Bengals took on the St. Louis Cardinals in the Super Bowl this year. It was a heavy passing battle between the Bengals' Ken Anderson and Neil Lomax of the Cards. In the end the Bengals came out on top, winning the Super Bowl 27-24.

Top Performers

Joe Montana won the MVP award and threw for 4,563 yards and 41 touchdowns.
Greg Bell of the Falcons ran for 1,486 yards and 9 touchdowns to lead the league.
Art Monk caught 103 passes for the Redskins for 1,549 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Kyle Clifton of the Wildcats led the league in tackles with 133

John Elway, QB – Denver Broncos

Elway led the Broncos to a 7-9 record this year but struggled at times. He ended up completing 63.6% of his passes for 3,474 yards, with 13 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Eric Dickerson, RB – Los Angeles Rams

Eric recovered from his knee injury quite well, and helped lead the Rams to a 8-8 season. He ran the ball 244 times for 1,053 yards and 8 touchdowns. He looks really good out there, and if he got more carries he should be able to compete for a rushing title soon. He also caught 81 passes this year for 606 yards, with 7 receiving touchdowns.

Curt Warner, RB – Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks were 12-4 this year but were bumped out of the playoffs in their first game. Curt continued his excellent backup play, this year running 205 times for 851 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Bruce Matthews, G – Houston Oilers

Houston was 4-12 this year, but Bruce continued to improve, with 30 out of 72 run blocks and 4 sacks allowed.

Jim Kelly, QB – Buffalo Bills

Kelly has really developed a lot and is now rated 50/80, but Warren Moon still got the starting job this year. I'm not sure how long the Bills can keep two highly touted, expensive quarterbacks on their roster. Jim had 4 completions this season for 29 yards as he watched the Bills go 4-12.

Ken O'Brien, QB – New York Jets

Ken got to start four games this year as an injury backup, and made the most of it, completing 100 passes for 993 yards, with 8 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. The Jets finished 9-7 and won their division to make to the playoffs, before losing to Baltimore. Ken got to start in their playoff game and threw for 284 yards and 2 TDs, but it wasn't enough.

Dan Marino, QB – Miami Dolphins

Dan led the Dolpins to the playoffs this year after a 13-3 regular season. He broke out for his first huge season, completing 371 passes for 4,403 yards, with 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Unfortunately the Fins were knocked out by Cincinnati, 26-21, on the Bengals way to the Super Bowl.

Darrell Green, CB – Washington Redskins

Darrell played in 14 games for the Redskins this year, as they went 8-8. He had 4 interceptions and 10 passes defensed, as well as 62 tackles, 16 assists, and a sack. He's really a great player against the run and the pass.

Henry Ellard, WR – Los Angeles Rams

Henry was fantastic this year, catching 89 passes for 1,465 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was named 2nd Team All-Pro Receiver. He really has a knack for finding the end zone, with 28 touchdown catches in 3 seasons.

Leonard Marshall, DE – New York Giants

Leonard remained very consistent to last year, posting almost identical stats – 40 tackles, 12 assists, and 8.5 sacks, along with 17 hurries. The Giants were 7-9 this year.

Darryl Talley, LB – Buffalo Bills

Darryl was excellent this year, racking up 91 tackles, 20 assists, a sack, and an interception for a touchdown. He and fellow LB Jim Haslett (who had 120 tackles this year) are doing all they can to hold the run defense together.

Roger Craig, RB – San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers went 11-5 and powered their way to the NFC championship game this year before losing to St. Louis. Joe Montana was league MVP this year and Roger had a great year too, running 302 times for 1,324 yards and 7 touchdowns. He also got more involved in the passing game, catching 64 passes for 424 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Richard Dent, DE – Chicago Bears

Richard was hampered some by injuries this year, but still played in 14 games, and finished with 33 tackles, 9 assists, 7 sacks, and an impressive 36 hurries. The Bears went 7-9 on the year.

Mark Clayton, WR – Miami Dolphins

Mark and Anthony both played second fiddle to Mark Duper this year, as he racked up over 1100 yards and 10 TDs. Mark caught 42 balls for 630 yards and one touchdown.

Anthony Carter, WR – Miami Dolphins

AC caught 32 passes for 440 yards and 1 touchdown. He's a great player but just isn't getting on the field enough to make a huge impact.

Notable Draft Results

Neal Anderson, RB – Buffalo Bills, #1 overall
Mark Rypien, QB – Jacksonville Rowdies, #5 overall
Jim Everett, QB – Indianapolis Mustangs, #6 overall
Leslie O'Neal, DE – Tampa Bay Buccaneers, #7 overall

The Miami Dolphins would face the Atlanta Falcons in the Super Bowl this season. Miami was powered by their young offense, but they were no match for the Falcons, who beat them 28-6, with four touchdown passes from Steve Bartkowski.

Top Performers

Joe Theismann won the MVP and passed for 3,954 yards and 34 touchdowns this year.
Herschel Walker slammed opponents for 1,513 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns for the Colts.
Jerry Rice of the Vikings led the league with 1,797 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns.
Dexter Manley led the league in sacks (again) with 18.5

John Elway, QB – Denver Broncos

John led the Broncos to a 12-4 regular season and a trip to the playoffs, beating last year's champs the Bengals before losing to Miami in a blowout. (John was super sharp in the two playoff games – 71% completion for 503 yards, with 5 TDs and 1 pick. Wow.) Overall he had his best year yet, throwing for 3,537 yards with 25 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. With receivers Steve Watson and Vance Johnson, and burner Jessie Hester, he's finally got some good targets to throw to.

Eric Dickerson, RB – Los Angeles Rams

Eric won the League's Fastest Man award this year! He continues to be reliable but hasn't been breaking out the huge yardage some expected. A big part of this is the Rams' patchwork offensive line. Still he had 261 carries for 1,023 yards this year, and a career-high 11 touchdowns. He's become a huge part of the passing game also, catching 86 balls for 750 yards. The Rams went 8-8 this year.

Curt Warner, RB – Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks went 7-9 this year, and Curt continued to perform his backup role, though running the ball less than usual. He had 101 carries for 491 yards, and only 1 touchdown. 2nd year player Jeff Smith is definitely picking up more of the running duties, and Curt is getting disgruntled about it.

Bruce Matthews, G – Houston Oilers

The Oilers were 7-9 this year, and Bruce struggled, having his worst season yet, until week 11 when he went out with a bad back injury and had to miss the rest of the season. He had 12 out of 34 key run blocks and allowed 4 sacks. Hopefully he'll bounce back from the injury next year.

Jim Kelly, QB – Buffalo Bills

Jim continues to hone his skills, right now I'd say he's one of the top 10 QBs on NFL rosters – unfortunately another of the top 10 is ahead of him. The Bills were pathetic again this year at 5-11. Jim got to start two games and looked very sharp – completing 67% of his passes for 576 yards, with 7 touchdowns and 1 interception. Career, he has 14 TDs and 4 interceptions. Jim is demanding a trade – whether the Bills will listen is another story.

Ken O'Brien, QB – New York Jets

The Jets were 6-10, again with Richard Todd at the helm. Ken, had his least amount of play yet, completing only 17 passes for 214 yards and 2 interceptions.

Dan Marino, QB – Miami Dolphins

Miami was the best team in the AFC this year, at 13-2-1. Their top notch passing attack led by Marino got them all the way to the Super Bowl but they couldn't win the title. Dan was a monster this year, throwing for 4,528 yards with 34 touchdowns and 16 interceptions – and he had 7 300 yard games. He also played at a very high level in the playoffs, recording 8 touchdowns against 1 pick this year.

Darrell Green, CB – Washington Redskins

An 11-5 Redskins team was bounced out of the playoffs by Atlanta this year. Green had a slightly off year, with only 2 interceptions, 48 tackles, 12 assists, and 2 hurries. Washington's defense is one of the best in the league, so his numbers may just be due to tightening up elsewhere.

Henry Ellard, WR – Los Angeles Rams

Henry is one of the best receivers in the NFL, year in and out. This year he caught 86 passes for 1,406 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was named 1st Team All-Pro Wide Receiver! This was the first year he wasn't running back punts or kicks for the Rams, so he could concentrate on receiving full time.

Leonard Marshall, DE – New York Giants

Leonard continues to pressure opposing QBs – this year he had 48 tackles, 23 assists, 7 sacks (leading the team) and 20 hurries, along with 12 QB knockdowns. The Giants finished 9-7, powered by a Joe Morris and Butch Woolfolk rushing attack.

Darryl Talley, LB – Buffalo Bills

Darryl continues to have a lot of opportunities for tackles as a big part of the woeful Bills run defense (worst in the league this season.) This year he recorded 84 tackles, 34 assists, and 2 sacks, as well as an interception. He's consistently good.

Roger Craig, RB – San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers were 13-3 this year, but were knocked out of the playoffs by St. Louis. Roger suffered a shoulder injury that kept him out close to half the season this year. In 9 games, he rushed 215 yards for 910 yards and a career high 12 touchdowns. He also caught 30 balls for 202 yards and 2 scores. If he can stay healthy next year he should be ready for another solid season.

Richard Dent, DE – Chicago Bears

The Bears were a horrible 3-13 this year – a big part of that was injuries, which seemed to stalk them all over. Richard was one of them, he blew his knee out in week 2 and had to have surgery so was on the IR most of the year. In two games he had 22 tackles, 4 assists, half a sack, and three hurries. It looks like he will come back full strength next year, though.

Mark Clayton, WR – Miami Dolphins

Mark enjoys playing on the Dolphins, but he's low on the totem pole, and seems to accept that. This year he had 40 catches for 508 yards and 6 touchdowns - 4th best in Miami's receiving corps.

Anthony Carter, WR – Miami Dolphins

AC had a good year this year, starting in four games and recording 48 catches for 748 yards with 6 touchdowns – all career highs for him. Unfortunately in the stacked Miami receiving corps, this was only good for third best, behind Mark Duper and 2nd year man Eric Martin.

San Francisco faced the Kansas City Chiefs in this year's Super Bowl – the Chiefs' QB Bill Kenney had a great game, throwing for 360 yards and two TDs, while the 49ers Roger Craig was stifled. Final score, Chiefs 37-27.

Top Performers

Joe Montana won his second MVP award and threw for 3,871 yards with 34 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.
Gerald Willhite of the Broncos rushed for 1,567 yards to lead the league, with 9 touchdowns.
Jerry Rice of the Vikings had 103 catches for 1,698 yards and 8 touchdowns.

John Elway, QB – Denver Broncos
-
Elway continues to improve, throwing very efficiently this year, completing 63.9% of his passes for 3,128 yards with 21 touchdowns and only 7 interceptions. The Broncos went 11-5 and went to the playoffs (three teams from the AFC West went!) They beat Cincinnati behind Elways three TD passes before being gunned down by Miami 42-17.

Eric had his best year rushing since his rookie season, carrying the ball 267 times for 1,197 yards and 5 touchdowns. He was a huge part of the passing game as usual, with 633 yards and 7 touchdowns. The Rams finished 6-10 this year.
-
Curt Warner, RB – Seattle Seahawks
-
Curt did his usual thing, spell starting RB Jeff Smith. He had 168 carries for 642 yards and 4 touchdowns this year. The Seahawks finished 9-7 but were denied a trip to the playoffs.
-
Bruce Matthews, G – Houston Oilers
-
Bruce doesn't seem quite the same player after his back injury last year – he's still good but perhaps not great. This year he sufferent from injuries as well, and had an average year, with 14 of 41 run blocks and 4 sacks allowed. The Oilers went 4-12 and accomplished a rare feat – having the worst run offense and the worst run defense in the league.
.
Jim Kelly, QB – Buffalo Bills
-
Kelly's attitude has now gone to livid after another wasted year as a backup. He got to play a bit more than the last two years, but didn't impress many, completing 73 passes for 685 yards with 4 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He needs to get out of town, but it may not happen until his contract ends in 1989. The Bills continue to be bottom dwellers, going 4-12 this year.
-
Ken O'Brien, QB – Jacksonville Rowdies
-
Really good news for Ken. He was cut by the Jets, and picked up on a one year deal by the Jacksonville Rowdies. He was named their starter and had a good solid year, completing almost 67% of his passes for 3,621 yards, with 24 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. He led the team to an 8-8 season, an impressive turnaround for a team that finished 2-14 last year and had never won more than 5 games.
-
Dan Marino, QB – Miami Dolphins
-
Dan had his third straight year of 4,000 yards or more passing, and is hoping one of these days the awards voters will notice. This year he threw for 4,370 yards, with 27 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, leading the Dolphins to an 11-5 season before losing in the playoffs to Oakland.
-
Darrell Green, CB – Washington Redskins
-
Darrell was fantastic this year, with 7 interceptions and 20 passes defensed (leading the league,) 61 tackles, and 22 assists. He was named, to no one's surprise, a First Team All-Pro Cornerback. The Redskins finished 9-7 and made it to the second round where they lost to Atlanta.
-
Henry Ellard, WR – Los Angeles Rams
-
Henry remained rock solid this year, catching 74 passes for 1,283 yards and 7 touchdowns. He'd like to see the Rams win more games though.
-
Leonard Marshall, DE – New York Giants
-
Leonard stepped up this year for a career year across the board, leading the team with 16.5 sacks, recording 72 tackles, 16 assists, and 23 hurries. He was named 1st Team All-Pro Defensive End and is really playing at a high level right now.
-
Darryl Talley, LB – Buffalo Bills
-
Darryl led the Bills defense this year with 99 tackles, a career high. He also had 18 assists, 4 sacks and an interception. Right now he's one of the most solid defenders in pro football.
-
Roger Craig, RB – San Francisco 49ers
-
Roger bounced back from his injuries last year and had a good season, running the ball 320 times for 1,226 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also caugh 84 passes for 501 yards and 5 touchdowns. The 49ers had a great year, going 14-2 in the regular season before being defeated in the Super Bowl.
-
Richard Dent, DE – Chicago Bears
-
Richard broke out with a career year this season, with 52 tackles, 17 assists, and 13 sacks, as well as 26 hurries and an amazing 29 QB knockdowns. The Bears went 7-9 but managed to stagger into the playoffs before being stomped by the Saints.
-
Mark Clayton, WR – Miami Dolphins
-
Mark led the Dolphins receivers this year with 67 catches for 872 yards (both career highs) and 2 touchdowns. Unfortunately this was because Mark Duper had a horrible leg fracture in a game in week 3 and was done for the year. In fact it looks like Duper's career might be over as his ratings have already suffered horribly.
-
Anthony Carter, WR – Miami Dolphins
-
Carter had another solid year in the crowd of Miami receivers, catching 47 passes for 676 yards and 5 touchdowns. With Duper's injury, he may have a chance to move up next year.

Notable Draft Results
-
Randall McDaniel, G – Detroit Lions, #1
Chris Dishman, CB – Indianapolis Mustangs, #2
Thurman Thomas, RB – Green Bay Packers, #5
Sterling Sharpe, TE – Philadelphia Eagles, #8
Eric Allen, CB – Los Angeles Rams, #9
Michael Irvin, WR – New England Patriots, #11
Tim Brown, WR – Minnesota Vikings, #12
-
Miami faced the St. Louis Cardinals in the Super Bowl this year. Miami had shredded opponents, going 14-2, while the Cards had come in through the wild card door. In the end this was all about the Cardinals and surprising backup QB Randall Cunningham, who threw two touchdowns and ran in another to win the game for the Cards, 34-10. (The Cardinals starting QB Neil Lomax got injured in the playoffs and Cunningham, who had barely played all year, took over and had a 120.7 rating in the conference finals and the Super Bowl. Wow, what a story.)
-
Top Performers
-
Dan Marino passed for 4,424 yards with 36 touchdowns and 9 interceptions to win the MVP award.
Gerald Riggs of the Falcons ran for 1,611 yards and scored 10 touchdowns this season
Irving Fryar broke loose with 100 catches for 1,927 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.

John Elway, QB – Denver Broncos
-
John had his best year yet in the Nfl, completing 62.2% of his passes for 3,663 yards, with 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He led the Broncos to the playoffs with an 11-5 record but they lost to rival Kansas City.
-
Eric Dickerson, RB – Los Angeles Rams
-
Eric continued to be very consistent, going over 1,000 yards rushing for the 6th straight season. This year he had 274 carries for 1,153 yards and 10 touchdowns, as well as 80 catches for 596 yards and 8 touchdowns in the passing game. He's really a great all-around back for the Rams, who managed a 9-7 season before losing to the Cardinals in the playoffs.
-
Curt Warner, RB – Dallas Cowboys
-
Curt was released by the Seahawks in preseason and ended up signing a one year deal with the Cowboys. He basically did the same thing he had done in previous years, running 153 times for 682 yards and 5 touchdowns in a backup/platoon role. Dallas went 9-7 this year and barely missed the playoffs.
-
Bruce Matthews, G – Houston Oilers
-
Bruce had an unimpressive year, recording only 15 KRBs out of 48 chances, and allowing 2 sacks. He seems to be struggling to reach his numbers of his first few seasons. The Oilers were 5-11 this year.
-
Jim Kelly, QB – Buffalo Bills
-
Kelly finally got the starting nod this year after a development spurt left him the best choice. He completed 384 passes for 3,970 yards, with 22 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. It's taken a long time but he's finally made it as a starter, and looks very good.
-
Ken O'Brien, QB – Jacksonville Rowdies
-
Everyone expected the Rowdies to sign O'Brien after last year, but instead they used their franchise tag on him. Ken thus went from being paid 250K last year, to $4.6 million this year. Quite a pay raise! If that wasn't enough, he then signed a 5 year, $31 million deal with them. He started every game this year and led the Rowdies to a 9-7 finish with 3,768 yards passing, and 21 touchdowns / 25 interceptions. He seems to be getting the job done and Jacksonville is happy.
-
Dan Marino, QB – Miami Dolphins
-
Dan won his first MVP award this year, leading the Dolphins to a 14-2 season before a loss in the Super Bowl. He looked fantastic, completing 67.8% of his passes for 4,424 yards, with 36 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.
-
Darrell Green, CB – Washington Redskins
-
Darrell continued to be one of the top corners in the league, with 3 interceptions this year and 14 passes defensed, as well as 61 tackles and 8 assists. The Redskins went 8-8 this year, with veteran Joe Theismann fading visibly at QB.
-
Henry Ellard, WR – Los Angeles Rams
-
Henry had a career year this year, catching 90 passes for 1,565 yards (second in the league) and 7 touchdowns. He was named 1st Team All-Pro Wide Receiver and continues to be one of the elite receivers in the league.
-
Leonard Marshall, DE – New York Giants
-
Leonard suffered some injuries this year but still started 14 games, recording 45 tackles, 11 assists, 7.5 sacks and 25 hurries. The Giants went 11-5 and went to the playoffs where they were blown out by the Cardinals.
-
Darryl Talley, LB – Buffalo Bills
-
Darryl had his usual solid year, though a leg injury left him able to start only 12 games. He had 60 tackles and 12 assists on the year, along with an interception. The Bills finished 4-12 again this year.
-
Roger Craig, RB – San Francisco 49ers
-
Roger had his best year running the ball, carrying 287 times for 1,370 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also caught 63 passes for 459 yards and 3 more scores. The 49ers went 10-6 this year, beating Carolina in the playoffs before falling to Minnesota.
-
Richard Dent, DE – Chicago Bears
-
Richard led the Bears in sacks this year, with 11, and had 37 tackles, 14 assists and 32 hurries. The Bears went 7-9.
-
Mark Clayton, WR – Miami Dolphins
-
With Mark Duper released due to his injury, Clayton stepped up as the Dolphins #1 receiver and had a huge year, with 93 catches for 1,290 receiving yards and a league leading 17 touchdowns!
-
Anthony Carter, WR – Miami Dolphins
-
Anthony was the missing man this year, really not involved in the passing game in any major way. He had 18 catches for 224 yards and 3 touchdowns. He's hoping things may change a bit next year.

I'm reading and enjoying this dynasty, as this is the era where I first got into NFL football.

Can you give an update on Terry Bradshaw's career if you get a chance?

I'd be interested in Cowboys draft picks if you don't mind.

Man, can't believe that Clayton did not get All-League honors of some kind after putting up that season. It seems like your version of Marino is having just as hard a time winning a Super Bowl as the real-life guy.

Of course Bradshaw's career was winding down by 83 - but the Steelers did make it to the the Super Bowl that first year and Bradshaw was a big part of that. Terry ended up retiring after the 1984 season (I think historically he retired after '83.) Since I just started in 83 - he ended up with a good year in 83, throwing for 25 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions, then in 84 he fell off a good bit, then retired.

Most recently Dallas took DE Wayne Martin in the first round. Looking at their team, they aren't full of flashy big names, but you'll be happy to hear they just won the Super Bowl in 1989. Also their monster DE Jim Jeffcoat had a huge year and just won Defensive Player of the Year. But overall they're a hard working, blue collar team, very much unlike the team the real Cowboys were building in 1989.

Yeah, but he has some stiff competition. In terms of yardage, he was beaten in 1988 by Irving Fryar (who had that huge year) as well as Henry Ellard, Tim Brown, Cris Carter, and Jerry Rice. So it was close but he just missed the award.

Just to look at another famous player, Jerry Rice. Playing for the Vikings, he is actually putting up BETTER numbers than the historical Rice, except in touchdowns. In 5 seasons he has 3 seasons of 100+ catches (Rice only had two of those his entire career) and has racked up yardage totals for 1315, 1797, 1698, 1366, and 1758. Historically Rice had 66 touchdowns by this point and this version only has 54. I guess you can take Rice out of San Francisco but he's still Rice. (Oh yes and the Vikings also have Tim Brown!)

Rodney Peete, QB – Detroit Lions, #2
Derrick Thomas, LB -- Houston Oilers, #4
Barry Sanders, RB – San Francisco 49ers (via trade) #5
Deion Sanders, CB – Seattle Seahawks, #10
-
Dallas faced Buffalo in the Super Bowl this year – Dallas won, 17-14, using their power running game and strong defense to seal the deal.
-
Top Performers
-
Neil Lomax of the Rams threw for 4,799 passing yards, with 30 touchdowns and 15 picks. (but Joe Montana beat him out for the MVP award)
Bo Jackson of Carolina led the league in rushing with 1.702 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Michael Irvin of the Patriots caught 116 passes for 1,998 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Jim Jeffcoat of the Cowboys led the league with 22.5 sacks and was the Super Bowl MVP.

John Elway, QB – Denver Broncos
-
The Broncos had an 8-8 season but John had a good one, throwing for 3,746 yards with 20 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He also signed a four year, $31 million contract with the Broncos.
-
Eric Dickerson, RB – Los Angeles Rams
-
Eric continued to be reliable but not overpowering, rushing 280 times for 1,073 yards and 10 touchdowns. He added 81 catches for 693 yards with 2 touchdown catches. The Rams finished 9-7 but were denied a shot in the playoffs.
-
Curt Warner, RB – New York Jets
-
Curt signed a one-year deal with the Jets and had a good year, running the ball 153 times for 682 yards, with 5 touchdowns, as well as 30 catches for 142 yards. The Jets finished 7-9 and didn't make the playoffs.
-
Bruce Matthews, G – Houston Oilers
-
Bruce signed a four year, $10 million contract with the Oilers, and had his best season in years, recording 21 blocks out of 55 chances, and allowing 5 sacks. The Oilers finished 11-5 before going down in defeat to Cleveland in the playoffs.
-
Jim Kelly, QB – Buffalo Bills
-
Jim led the Bills to the Super Bowl this year and almost claimed the title. It was an amazing turnaround for a Bills team that has been terrible the last few seasons. This year they finished 12-4, and Jim started only 11 games due to injury, but he threw for 2,689 yards with 22 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.
-
Ken O'Brien, QB – Jacksonville Rowdies
-
Ken hurt his leg mid-season and only started 9 games this year, but he played well, throwing for 2,038 yards, with 12 touchdowns and only 4 picks. The Rowdies finished 12-4 before losing to Cleveland in the divisional round.
-
Dan Marino, QB – Miami Dolphins
-
Dan had another great season this year, playing every game and throwing for 4,208 yards with 31 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. He was named 2nd Team All-Pro Quarterback and this makes 5 straight years of throwing for more than 4,000 yards. The Dolphins went 10-6 on the year before washing out of the playoffs in the first round.
-
Darrell Green, CB – Washington Redskins
-
Darrell missed two starts this year due to injuries, but finished with 44 tackles and 15 assists, as well as 1 interception. Basically a down year for him but he's hoping to bounce back next year. The Redskins finished 8-8.
-
Henry Ellard, WR – Los Angeles Rams
-
Henry suffered a major knee injury in exhibition, then re-injured it in Week 2, losing the rest of the season. It doesn't look like it will affect his career too much, at least so far. He caught 7 passes for 89 yards this year.
-
Leonard Marshall, DE – New York Giants
-
Leonard had his second best year in the league this year, with 56 tackles, 14 assists, and 10.5 sacks, along with 33 hurries. The Giants did well, going 11-5 in the regular season, before being knocked out of the playoffs by the 49ers.
-
Darryl Talley, LB – Buffalo Bills
-
Darryl was a big part of the Bills defense this year, even though he started only 11 games due to a serious knee injury at the end of the year. He had 72 tackles, 22 assists, and 3.5 sacks.
-
Roger Craig, RB – San Francisco 49ers
-
Roger's yardage suffered this year as the 49ers drafted star prospect Barry Sanders, who did most of their running this year (for over 1500 yards.) Roger filled in as a backup, running the ball 104 times for 558 yards and 2 touchdowns, and caught 28 passes for 148 yards and another TD. The 49ers went 9-7 but got hot in the playoffs and made it to the conference championship before losing to Dallas.
-
Richard Dent, DE – Chicago Bears
-
Dent's sack totals have been getting better and better, and this year he had 17.5 of them for a career best, as well as 45 tackles, 12 assists, and 34 hurries. He was named 2nd Team All-Pro Defensive End for his performance. The Bears went 8-8 and squeaked into a wild card game which they lost to Dallas.
-
Mark Clayton, WR – Miami Dolphins
-
Mark built on last year to have the really great year he's been threatening to have. He caught 96 passes for 1,509 receiving yards, and 11 touchdowns, earning him the nod as 2nd Team All-Pro Wide Receiver.
-
Anthony Carter, WR – Miami Dolphins
-
Anthony had a serious shoulder injury which kept him out of several games, and he barely played in the rest, catching only 7 passes all year for 96 yards and a touchdown.

Minnesota's QB for several years has been Wade Wilson, but he's definitely starting to fade a bit. He had a career year in 1989 with two great receivers to throw to.

1990 season

This was the year most of our players went into free agency – but only two of them changed teams.
-
The most eye-popping free agency move in the off-season was Joe Montana leaving San Francisco to sign with Washington. Apparently contract negotiations with the 49ers broke down and Montana decided to go elsewhere. This is going to be huge for both teams. (And it was! The 49ers finished 6-10, after finishing with 9 wins or better every year of this dynasty. And the Redskins came off two 8-8 years to go 13-3!)
-
Notable Draft Results
-
Brian Mitchell, RB – Indianapolis Mustangs, #3
Emmitt Smith, RB – New England Patriots, #4
Eric Davis, CB – El Paso Warriors, #8
Shannon Sharpe, TE – Green Bay Packers, #9
Richmond Webb, T – New York Jets, #11
Cortez Kennedy, DT – Denver Broncos, #14
Junior Seau, LB – Atlanta Falcons, #16
-
This year's Super Bowl featured the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams won in a real battle of a game, 27-20, with Henry Ellard catching the winning touchdown pass. Emmitt Smith of the Patriots had a great game too but it wasn't enough.
-
Top Performers
-
Eric Dickerson of the Rams won the MVP this year and ran for 1,399 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Emmitt Smith of the Patriots was named Rookie of the Year and propelled his team to the Super Bowl with over 1300 rushing yards and 11 TDs.
Cris Carter had an amazing year, catching 123 passes for 1,995 yards and 8 touchdowns.
Reggie White of the Dolphins had 22.5 sacks this year to lead the league.

John Elway, QB – Denver Broncos
-
John has been a solid quarterback but this year was the first year he really broke down the barriers, passing for 4,633 yards and 32 touchdowns, with only 14 interceptions. He was named 2nd Team All-Pro Quarterback, his first such award. The Broncos ended up 7-9.
-
Eric Dickerson, RB – Los Angeles Rams
-
Eric has been asking the Rams for more carries for a while, and this year he got them, blowing up for a career year and ending up being named Most Valuable Player! The Rams won the Super Bowl after a 13-3 record this year, with a big thanks to Eric and Henry Ellard. Eric had 349 carries for 1,399 yards and an impressive 17 rushing touchdowns. He tacked on 7 more receiving TDs and caught 76 passes for 607 yards.
-
Curt Warner, RB – Baltimore Colts
-
Curt signed with Baltimore on another one year deal, continuing his journeyman ways. As usual, he backed up Herschel Walker and ran 142 times for 531 yards and two touchdowns. He added 20 receptions for 133 yards and a touchdown as well. The Colts finished 9-7 but their powerful running game got them all the way to the conference finals where they lost to New England.
-
Bruce Matthews, G – Houston Oilers
-
Bruce had his best year in pass coverage, allowing only 1 sack, and he continues to be used much more as a pass blocker than a run blocker. He had 14 run blocks out of 41 chances.
-
Jim Kelly, QB – Buffalo Bills
-
Jim had a great year, but missed 4 games due to a shoulder injury at the end of the season. He passed for 3,448 yards, with 18 touchdowns and 11 interceptions – it definitely would have been a career season if he wasn't injured. The Bills finished 7-9 and lost every game that Jim didn't start.
-
Ken O'Brien, QB – Jacksonville Rowdies
-
Ken had a huge year for the Rowdies, with a career year in yardage, though his accuracy slipped a bit. He passed for 4,371 yards with 23 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. The Rowdies were 5-11 this year, and the lack of a running game was a big part of that
-
Dan Marino, QB – Miami Dolphins
-
Dan had another monster year, and came close to another MVP award. He threw for a career high 4,559 yards, with 32 touchdowns, and only 10 interceptions. He was named, to no one's surprise, 1st Team All-Pro Quarterback. So far, since 1983, he has the most passing yards of any quarterback, and trails only Montana in touchdowns. The Dolphins went 13-3 this year but then were beaten by New England in a major upset to knock them out of the playoffs early.
-
Darrell Green, CB – Washington Redskins
-
Darrell's numbers continued to decline this year, partly because the rest of the Redskins defense keeps improving. He had 39 tackles, 15 assists, and 2 interceptions this year, which helped the Redskins to have a top 5 passing defense. They finished 10-6 and made it all the way to the NFC finals where they were gunned down by the Rams.
-
Henry Ellard, WR – Los Angeles Rams
-
Henry put last year's knee injury behind him and went to work, with another great performance for the Rams. He caught 90 passes for 1,502 yards and 9 touchdowns. He came up huge in the Rams Super Bowl drive, in the three playoff games going for 364 yards and 4 touchdowns.
-
Leonard Marshall, DE – New York Giants
-
Leonard blew his knee out in the beginning of the season and had to have surgery to repair it. He only had 2 tackles and 1 assist before this happened. The Giants finished 7-9.
-
Darryl Talley, LB – Buffalo Bills
-
Darryl has been unable to shake the injury bug the last couple of seasons, and this was no exception, as head and neck injuries left him with only 12 starts. He recorded 59 tackls, 18 assists, 2 sacks, and an interception in any case.
-
Roger Craig, RB – Atlanta Falcons
-
With Barry Sanders running the ball full time for the 49ers, Roger knew the writing was on the wall, and signed a one-year deal with the Falcons. He carried the ball 224 times for 912 yards, for 6 touchdowns (definitely his least productive season ever) and caught 50 passes for 367 yards and 2 touchdowns. Atlanta was a miserable 3-13 this season.
-
Richard Dent, DE – Chicago Bears
-
Dent was moved to the left side of the line this year, and missed the first four games with a neck injury. He was still solid though, with 33 tackles, 5 assists, 13 sacks, and 27 hurries. The Bears struggled this season though, ending up 6-10.
-
Mark Clayton, WR – Miami Dolphins
-
Mark hurt his leg coming out of the preseason, and that and other injuries limited his playing time severely. He ended up with only 41 catches for 654 yards and 5 touchdowns. His fans are hoping he will bounce back to be Marino's main target next year.
-
Anthony Carter, WR – Miami Dolphins
-
Anthony had one of his better years, which isn't saying a lot. He caught 38 passes for 673 yards and 4 touchdowns. For whatever reason, he just hasn't performed very well for the Dolphins, and has basically been a permanent backup. He had his chance to show something this year with a lot more starts from Clayton's injury, and he didn't.

Jim McMahon retired after the 1990 season - in his brief career he only had one year that he played a substantial amount, starting 13 games for Detroit in 1987 - he was frankly terrible, with a 64.0 rating that year.

Apparently the X factor hit McMahon and kept on hitting.

Notable Draft Results
-
Ricky Watters, RB – Atlanta Falcons, #1 (this can't be good for Roger Craig)
Brett Favre, QB – Jacksonville Rowdies, #2 (this can't be good for Ken O'Brien)
Herman Moore, WR – Houston Oilers, #3
Ted Washington, DT – Chicago Bears, #7
Todd Lyght, CB – Green Bay Packers, #8
Keenan McArdell, WR – Detroit Lions, #26
Leon Lett, DT – New England Patriots, #31
-
The Los Angeles Rams are forming a dynasty of sorts, as the defending champs return to the Super Bowl and edge the surprising Jacksonville Rowdies, 23-20. Eric Dickerson scored two touchdowns and was named Super Bowl MVP.
-
Top Performers
-
Brett Favre came in as a rookie and completely turned around the Jacksonville Rowdies, leading them from a 5-11 season to 11-5 and almost winning the Super Bowl. He passed for 4,290 yards (league leading) and 25 touchdowns, 8 interceptions.
Ricky Watters of the Falcons had an even more amazing rookie season, to win Rookie of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year – finishing with over 2,000 combined rushing and receiving yards and 15 combined TDs.
Barry Sanders of the 49ers ran for 1,806 yards this year, third best on record behind Walter Payton.
Sterling Sharpe of the Eagles led the league in receiving yards, with 1,676, and 9 touchdowns.
Tim Brown of the Vikings finished only 6 yards behind Sharpe, and had an incredible 22 touchdowns (a record!)
Steve Atwater of the Bills led the league with 123 tackles.
Brian Mitchell of the Mustangs had 2,887 all-purpose yards this year, breaking Marcus Allen's record.
-
John Elway, QB – Denver Broncos
-
John came close to winning the League MVP last year, and came back with another great campaign and did win it this year! He had 4,176 yards passing, with 36 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. It's a great validation for a great career. The Broncos went 12-4, beat Pittsburgh in the playoffs, before losing to the upstart Rowdies in the conference final.
-
Eric Dickerson, RB – Los Angeles Rams
-
The Rams won their second Super Bowl in a row, and Eric was a big part, though this was the first year he didn't rush for 1,000 yards. Though he carried the ball 254 times, he just didn't get his usual penetration of the line, and finished with 918 yards, though he did score 12 touchdowns. He stepped it up in the passing game though, catching 100 passes for 800 yards, and 5 more TDs. Eric was named Super Bowl MVP.
-
Curt Warner, RB – Houston Oilers
-
It looks like it may be the end of Curt's career. He was signed by Houston this year, but didn't get a regular season roster spot and was released.
-
Bruce Matthews, G – Houston Oilers
-
Bruce had his best year blocking for the run in years, with a 42% run blocking rate. He did allow 5 sacks though. He's proved himself to be a capable, but not outstanding offensive lineman. Houston finished 5-11 this year.
-
Jim Kelly, QB – Buffalo Bills
-
Jim was signed to a four-year, $40 million contract with the Bills, the team and the fans have great faith in him. He struggled with accuracy at times this year, but finished strong, though the Bills were mired at 3-13. Jim passed for 3,881 yards, with 17 touchdowns and 14 interceptions this year.
-
Ken O'Brien, QB – Jacksonville Rowdies
-
Ken had one of the worst timed contract holdouts I've ever seen this year – right after a fantastic rookie was drafted at his position. He gave up, came back to the team, and didn't play a down. The Rowdies, of course, made it to the Super Bowl, and Favre was amazing.
-
Dan Marino, QB – Miami Dolphins
-
Dan had a concussion early in the year which cost him a couple of starts, but he still managed to have his best rating year ever, completing 66.4% of his passes for 3,843 yards, with 34 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Miami finished 10-6 but lost to the Patriots in the playoffs. Just like in real life, he's a star player but can't seem to get that ring.
-
Darrell Green, CB – Washington Redskins
-
Darrell started his year off with a bang, running an interception back 86 yards for a score in Week 1. He had a good year overall, with 2 interceptions, 56 tackles, and 16 assists. The Redskins, led by Joe Montana, finished 11-5 but lost to the Eagles in the wild card round.
-
Henry Ellard, WR – Los Angeles Rams
-
Henry continues to be one of the very top receivers in the league, and he had a career season, catching 104 balls for 1,603 yards and 13 touchdowns. Again, he took it to another level in the playoffs, in 4 games catching 32 passes for 492 yards and a touchdown (including 157 yards receiving in the Super Bowl! He can't be stopped!)
-
Leonard Marshall, DE – New York Giants
-
Last year's knee injury and surgery ended up costing Leonard this season as well, as his slow recovery left him unready to play and the Giants put him on the IR list again. He seems to have recovered well, at least. The Giants finished 8-8.
-
Darryl Talley, LB – Buffalo Bills
-
Darryl came up big this year, with his best year since 1987 – 86 tackles, 23 assists, 1.5 sacks and an interception. If only he could be playing for a better team.
-
Roger Craig, RB – Oakland Raiders
-
Roger moved on from Atlanta and ended up in Oakland this season, as the starter. He's lost a lot of his edge, but he can do the little things – good hands and he's still elusive. He ran the ball 213 times this year (in a mostly passing offense) for 782 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also caught 48 passes for 326 yards. The Raiders were 5-11 this year. It's hard to tell how much more time Roger has in the league, but he's still got some skills.
-
Richard Dent, DE – Chicago Bears
-
Dent just didn't bring his A game this year, his worst complete season in the league. He had 27 tackles, 12 assists, and 7.5 sacks. He looks like he still has great talent but didn't show much of it this year, as the Bears went 7-9.
-
Mark Clayton, WR – Miami Dolphins
-
Mark was troubled by knee injuries this year which let him start only 7 games. He has really trailed off, production wise, though he seems to have solid talent. He caught 42 passes for 544 yards and a touchdown this year.
-
Anthony Carter, WR – Miami Dolphins
-
Anthony had his best year in the league this season, taking Clayton's place and catching 59 passes for 947 yards and 7 touchdowns. Eric Martin continues to be the big threat for the Fins, going for more than 1,400 receiving yards for the second year in a row.

1992 season
-
Eric Dickerson became the first of our players to retire from football, surprising a lot of people who felt he had more good years ahead of him.
-
Curt Warner also slipped away from football, after no one was willing to pick him up for two years in a row.
-
Notable Draft Results
-
T.J. Rubley, QB – Cleveland Browns, #1 (Wow, talk about an x-factor! A nobody in real life, in this game he's the best QB in the draft, and looks pretty sharp.)
Jimmy Smith, WR – Buffalo Bills, #2
Chester McGlockton, DT – Dallas Cowboys, #7
Marco Coleman, DE – San Francisco 49ers, #10
Troy Vincent, CB – Los Angeles Rams, #32
Brad Johnson, QB – San Francisco 49ers, #41
-
The Super Bowl was something of a mismatch, with a strong New England Patriots team bulldozing the St. Louis Cardinals, 30-10. New England's been knocking on the door for a while, as they have a 7-4 playoff record. Veteran QB Boomer Esiason and stud RB Emmitt Smith led the way, with WR Michael Irvin making big plays all the way.

John Elway, QB – Denver Broncos
-
Coming off an MVP season, Elway looked sharp this year but didn't put up the showy numbers of last year. He completed 68.6% of his passes for 3,673 yards, with 22 touchdowns against only 5 interceptions. A stress fracture of his leg kept him out of the last two games. Denver finished 9-7 and got into the playoffs, but without Elway were beaten by Miami.
-
Eric Dickerson, RB – Los Angeles Rams
-
Eric decided to retire, after a great career. He has 2 championship rings, won the League MVP award in 1990, and was Super Bowl MVP last year. Apparently he wanted to go out on top. As of the end of 1991 (remember, I started in 1983) Eric holds the career record in rushing yards with 10,104 and the career record in rushing touchdowns with 87. He seems certain to end up in the Hall of Fame.

-
Curt Warner, RB – Retired
-
Curt's football career is over. It never was what he expected, perhaps, but he had a good run as a platoon back with Seattle and other teams. His career best was 851 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns for Seattle in 1985.

-
Bruce Matthews, G – Houston Oilers
-
Bruce was hurt frequently this year, but played in 12 games, allowed 4 sacks, and ended up with only 12 key blocks. The Oilers finished 8-8 on the year.
-
Jim Kelly, QB – Buffalo Bills
-
The Bills finished 6-10 this year, which is pretty good by their standards. Kelly continues to shine, passing for 3,624 yards this year for 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Rookie WR Jimmy Smith definitely helped shore up the receiving corps a lot.
-
Ken O'Brien, QB – Oakland Raiders
-
After last year's disastrous holdout, the Rowdies released O'Brien. He signed with Oakland on a three year, $3.3 million deal. He backed up David Archer this year, and started one game – throwing 29 passes for 289 yards and 2 touchdowns, 2 interceptions on the year.
-
Dan Marino, QB – Miami Dolphins
-
Marino took his play to another level this year, hammering opponents for a record 5,249 yards passing, with 35 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions. He was named League MVP for the second time for this tremendous performance. The Dolphins finished 9-6 as their defense couldn't keep up with their offense , beat Denver in the wild card round before losing to New England.
-
Darrell Green, CB – Washington Redskins
-
Injuries kept Darrell off the field for all but 9 games this year. He ended up with decent numbers anyway, with 24 tackles, 5 assists, and 2 interceptions. The Redskins finished 9-7 before being blown out by the Cardinals in the wild card game.
-
Henry Ellard, WR – Los Angeles Rams
-
With Dickerson gone, the Rams suffered without much of a running game this year, and finished 8-8. Henry continued to play at a very high level though, catching 97 passes for 1,521 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was named 2nd Team All-Pro Wide Receiver. Not counting his year lost to injury, he has now racked up 1,500 yards or better for four straight years.
-
Leonard Marshall, DE – New York Giants
-
After missing two seasons due to injury, Marshall was glad to be back, and put up solid numbers, with 34 tackles, 13 assists, and 7.5 sacks, with 21 hurries. He seems to have a good bit of talent even after the injury. The Giants finished 9-7 but missed the playoffs.
-
Darryl Talley, LB – Buffalo Bills
-
Two major injuries kept Darryl off the field most of this season. In 4 starts he had 10 tackles and 4 assists. It looks like these injuries are really starting to wear on his skills.
-
Roger Craig, RB – Oakland Raiders
-
Roger remained as Oakland's starting running back, and looked better than last year, carrying the ball 213 times for 920 yards and 6 touchdowns. He also caught 36 passes for 226 yards. He doesn't have a lot left in the tank but this was a good year. Oakland finished 8-8.
-
Richard Dent, DE – Chicago Bears
-
Richard had another down season, recording one of his lowest sack totals ever, 5.5, and notching 28 tackles and 13 assists. His talent is there but he's not putting up the numbers. The Bears did well this year though, finishing 11-5 and knocking Green Bay out of the playoffs before losing to Tampa Bay.
-
Mark Clayton, WR – Kansas City Chiefs
-
With Mark's performance declining, and some disagreements with the Dolphins, they cut him at the start of the year. He signed a three year, $4.5 million contract with the Chiefs. He started 13 games this year and caught 51 passes for 620 yards and 4 touchdowns. The Chiefs finished 5-11.
-
Anthony Carter, WR – Miami Dolphins
-
Carter started 14 games this year and had a career year, recording 71 catches for 1,244 yards and 6 touchdowns. This is the kind of performance that many expected when AC came into the league but it has taken 10 years to happen.

How are the Steelers doing?

What big names do they have (tell me we won't have to re-live the Bubby Brister era)?

For most of his career it was Jack Kemp, who was the Rams QB from '83 through '89. Jim Everett was the QB for their first Super Bowl (and amazingly, his only year as a starter in 7 years) and Chris Miller has taken over the last two years.

The Steelers haven't had a lot of luck so far - they went 14-2 in 1983 and went to the Super Bowl (but lost.) Since then they've only made the playoffs once, finishing mostly 8-8 and 9-7. Bobby Hebert has been their QB since '87 and doing a good, but not great job. They really don't have many big names (at least that I recognize on their team,) their defense is pretty blue-collar and not that good. They have some strong WRs in Hart Lee Dykes and Rob Moore.

Bruce Matthews decided to retire after the last season.
-
Notable Draft Picks
-
Trent Green, QB – San Francisco 49ers, #1
Ray Buchanan, CB – Carolina Wildcats, #2
Dana Stubblefield, DT – Cleveland Browns, #3
John Lynch, S – Baltimore Colts, #4
Brad Hopkins, T – Dallas Cowboys, #7
Garrison Hearts, RB – Cincinnati Bengals, #8
Michael Strahan, DE – New Orleans Saints, #10
Jerome Bettis, RB – Seattle Seahawks, #29
-
The Super Bowl this year was a monster matchup of Miami vs Washington, Dan Marino vs. Joe Montana – a quarterback duel supreme. Montana hooked up with Johnnie Barnes and Raghib Ismail for touchdowns, then Ismail struck again with an 87 yard kickoff return for a touchdown just before halftime. Miami struggled to move the ball in the second half, with Marino's receivers tightly controlled, and the Redskins won the game, 34-20.
-
Top Performers
-
Randall Cunningham of the St. Louis Cardinals won the MVP this year, completing an amazing 70% of his passes for 4,658 yards, 45 touchdowns (a record) and 11 interceptions – a 113 season rating!
Bo Jackson of the Carolina Wildcats ran for 1,744 yards this year, and 12 touchdowns
Henry Ellard of the Rams caught 128 passes for 2,147 yards (both all-time records) and 18 touchdowns in a monster season that got him serious MVP consideration
Rod Woodson of the Raiders had 9 interceptions and 25 defensed passes this year to lead the league in both areas, as well as 60 tackles.
-
John Elway, QB – Denver Broncos
-
Elway led the Broncos to another great season, going 13-3 and being named 2nd Team All-Pro Quarterback. He passed for 4,175 yards, 37 touchdowns (a career high) and 13 interceptions. Denver hammered New England in their first playoff game, then lost to Miami (a game which John couldn't play in – that's happened twice now, preventing an Elway-Marino playoff matchup.)
-
Bruce Matthews, G – Houston Oilers
-
Bruce decided to retire after 10 years in the league, all with Houston. He was consistently a good, but not great player, a guard who will be missed but who certainly was not as dominant as the real life Matthews.

-
Jim Kelly, QB – Buffalo Bills
-
Jim had a strong season for the Bills this year, as they finished at 7-9. He threw 27 touchdowns, a career high, and 14 interceptions, as well as 3,812 passing yards.
-
Ken O'Brien, QB – Oakland Raiders
-
Ken remained with Oakland this year, and when starter David Archer got hurt mid-year, was able to start 9 games for them, putting up unimpressive numbers – 1,870 yards passing with 7 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.
-
Dan Marino, QB – Miami Dolphins
-
Dan led the Dolphins to a 13-3 year and all the way to the Super Bowl, where they suffered another disappointing loss. He wasn't as sharp as he has been recently, but still a very good year, throwing for 4,152 yards, 28 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.
-
Darrell Green, CB – Washington Redskins
-
Darrell continues to shine at corner, with 4 interceptions this year, one for a touchdown. He also had 48 tackles, 22 assists, and a sack. The Redskins won the Super Bowl, giving Darrell his first championship ring.
-
Henry Ellard, WR – Los Angeles Rams
-
Henry had a record-setting this year, setting all time records for catches and receiving yardage. He and QB Jim Everett were totally in-sync this year, and defenses just couldn't stop them. Unfortunately the Rams finished 9-7 but didn't make the playoffs. Henry had 128 catches for 2,147 yards and 18 touchdowns, and was named 1st Team All-Pro Wide Receiver.
-
Leonard Marshall, DE – New York Giants
-
Leonard put up very consistent numbers from last year – 38 tackles, 18 assists, and 4 sacks. The Giants struggled at 6-10 and really felt the loss of Lawrence Taylor, who retired before the season.
-
Darryl Talley, LB – Buffalo Bills
-
Darryl had an unspectacular season, still suffering from injuries that cost him several starts. He had 39 tackles and 18 assists on the year. A lot of people are speculating he may retire after this season.
-
Roger Craig, RB – Houston Oilers
-
Roger signed with Houston and was given the starting job – he surprised a lot of people this year by breaking 1,000 yards rushing, something he hadn't done since 1988. he ran 239 times for 1,048 yards with 5 touchdowns, and caught 48 passes for 259 yards. Houston went 8-8 on the year.
-
Richard Dent, DE – Chicago Bears
-
Knee injuries plagued Dent this year, and he only started 8 games. He had 17 tackles, 8 assists, and 4.5 sacks on the year. The Bears finished 9-7, then upset Tampa Bay in the wild card round, before losing to the Cardinals.
-
Mark Clayton, WR – Kansas City Chiefs
-
Mark started 11 games for the Chiefs this year, catching 52 passes for 657 yards and 7 touchdowns. He was the second receiver behind Stephone Paige this year. They finished 7-9.
-
Anthony Carter, WR – Miami Dolphins
-
Carter was up for free agency this year but stayed with the Dolphins, and had another good year, catching 72 passes for 1,075 yards and 5 touchdowns. He's performing well now, but as an 11-year wide receiver, how long can it last?

1994 Season

Roger Craig decided to hang up his cleats before this season.
-
Mark Clayton also decided to end his career.
-
Notable Draft Picks
-
Sam Adams, DT – New Orleans Saints, #1
Mark Brunell, QB – Cleveland Browns, #2
Dorsey Levens, RB – El Paso Warriors, #3
Marshall Faulk, RB – Houston Oilers, #5
Larry Allen, G – Carolina Wildcats, #9
Johnnie Morton, Wr – Kansas City Chiefs, #11
-
In a major free agency move, Barry Sanders left the 49ers and signed with the Vikings. Minnesota already had star QB Erik Kramer throwing to monster WRs Jerry Rice and Tim Brown, but now also Barry Sanders? They look to be the offensive powerhouse of the league.
-
After being signed by Miami to a 3 year, $40 million contract, Dan Marino was released, along with most of the team, in what appears to be a salary cap meltdown by the Fins. I don't know how this happened, but they ran out of money. Now their “team” for this year has only one player of over 29 skill, their kicker. Welcome to a first overall pick, Miami. (And yes, they finished 0-16 this year.)
-
This year's super bowl featured the Washington Redskins coming back to defend their title, along with the powerhouse New England Patriots. Washington pounded the Pats with the running game, and Joe Montana's efficient passing, and though a Michael Irvin touchdown pass for the Patriots made it close, the Redskins won 35-28 to make it two in a row.
-
Top Performers
-
Chris Miller of the Rams won the MVP award this year, passing for 4,609 yards and throwing 28 touchdowns.
Emmitt Smith of the Patriots led the league in rushing with 332 carries for 1,507 yards and 13 touchdowns. Unfortunatley he was hurt in the playoffs and missed the Super Bowl.
Irving Fryar of the Colts caught 115 passes for 2,066 yards (his second straight 2,000 yard season) and 17 touchdowns to lead all receivers.
-
John Elway, QB – Denver Broncos
-
John had a nagging groin injury that cost him a couple starts, and as a result he had his worst season as a starter, passing for 3,155 yards with 19 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. The Broncos finished at 9-7 and got into the playoffs, where they lost to the Colts.
-
Jim Kelly, QB – Buffalo Bills
-
Jim was very sharp this year, completing 310 passes for 3,246 yards, with 23 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. The Bills finished 6-10, and especially continued to struggle on defense and in the running game.
-
Ken O'Brien, QB – Oakland Raiders
-
Ken put together a good year this year, his first complete season since 1990. He started 15 games and passed for 3,465 yards, with 21 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. A lot of people had thought he was washed up, but he has a bit left in the tank. The Raiders finished 5-11 though.
-
Dan Marino, QB – Green Bay Packers
-
Dan was signed to a 3 year, $20 million deal by the Packers after the Miami fire sale. Green Bay definitely lacks some talent, and has struggled for most of the past seven years with losing records.
-
Darrell Green, CB – Washington Redskins
-
Darrell won his second championship ring with the Redskins this year, and was a big part of their defense, with 61 tackles, 14 assists, an interception, and 15 defensed passes. The 'Skins were 12-4 in the regular season, and powered by QB Joe Montana and RB Ed Toner, won the Super Bowl.
-
Henry Ellard, WR – Los Angeles Rams
-
The Rams had MVP quarterback Chris Miller throwing well all year, and finally Henry had some help in the receiving corps, with Lonzell Hill playing well. He started 14 games (knee injury) and caught 97 passes for 1,385 yards and 8 touchdowns. Maybe a bit down from his elite levels, but no one's complaining. The Rams had a 10-6 season but missed the playoffs due to a very strong NFC this year.
-
Leonard Marshall, DE – New York Giants
-
This was the first year in his career Leonard wasn't a starter, and in fact he barely saw the field, recording only 2 tackles and an assist in very sparing play. The Giants went 11-5, beat Tampa Bay, then lost to Washington in the divisional round.
-
Darryl Talley, LB – Buffalo Bills
-
Darryl improved on last year's numbers but constant injuries have really worn down his skills. He had 49 tackles and 22 assists. The Bills really have to think hard if he is an option as a starter next year.
-
Roger Craig, RB – Houston Oilers
-
Roger had an impressive career, though the only award he won was rookie of the year. He had 7 season with the 49ers, and most of his best play, then kicked around the league a few years. He is the all-time leader in rushing attempts and yards (though Herschel Walker is closing in.) He looks like a very good candidate for the Hall of Fame, as well.
-

-
Richard Dent, DE – Chicago Bears
-
Dent had his best season since 1990, silencing some critics with 8 sacks, 33 tackles, and 16 assists. He's not a young player anymore but he can still get it done. The Bears finished 6-10, with a woeful offense in almost every category.
-
Mark Clayton, WR – Kansas City Chiefs
-
Mark was a bit of a mystery in the league, many thought that he had a lot of promise, but didn't deliver as much as he could have. He had two seasons of more than 1,000 receiving yards, his best in 1989 in which he won his only All-Pro award. He was a solid receiver for Miami and KC but showed only flashes of his potential.

-
Anthony Carter, WR – New York Giants
-
After the Miami fire sale, Carter ended up signing with the Giants. He started 12 games and caught 63 passes for 863 yards and 5 touchdowns.

1995 Season
-
A big year for retirements.
-
Joe Montana announced his retirement after last season – he has nothing left to prove, with 3 championship rings, 3 MVP awards, and will be a sure Hall of Famer.
-
Henry Ellard decided to quit the game – again, he has nothing left to prove, as he's been one of the most dominant receivers in the league for the last decade.
-
Richard Dent also announced his retirement.
-
Leonard Marshall decided to retire – surprising no one.
-
Darryl Talley decided to retire as well
-
Darrell Green announced his retirement, though he can still play at a very high level, after two Super Bowl seasons for the Redskins, it was time to go.
-
Notable Draft Picks
-
Steve McNair, QB – Miami Dolphins, #1
Terrell Davis, RB – San Francisco 49ers, #2
Hugh Douglas, DE – Dallas Cowboys, #3
Curtis Martin, RB – Jacksonville Rowdies, #4
Korey Stringer, T – El Paso Warriors, #5
Warren Sapp, DT – Buffalo Bills, #8
Ty Law, CB – Chicago Bears, #10
Rod Smith, WR – New York Giants, #27
-
The Super Bowl this year featured the Denver Broncos and the New York Giants. The Broncos came in heavily favored, with a powerful offense that had smashed through the playoffs, and in the end they won, 35-14. Elway had his first championship ring.
-
Top Performers
-
Brett Favre of the Jacksonville Rowdies won the MVP award this year, throwing for 4,836 yards, 32 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He has looked great every year so far for the Rowdies.
Jerome Bettis of the Seahawks won Offensive Player of the Year, running for 1,704 yards and 16 touchdowns to bowl over opposing defenses.
Cris Carter of Jacksonville thrived as Favre's receiver, catching 126 passes for 2,022 yards and 14 touchdowns this year.
Junior Seau of the Falcons had a huge year, with 100 tackles as well as a league leading 9 interceptions.
-
John Elway, QB – Denver Broncos
-
John led the Broncos to a 12-4 regular season with 3,903 yards passing, 27 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions, then powered them to a Super Bowl title, with 6 playoff touchdowns and a 103.1 rating in three playoff games.
-
Jim Kelly, QB – Buffalo Bills
-
The Bills turned things around and went 10-5-1 this year, then beat the Steelers in the wild card game before losing to Denver. Jim started every game this year and had his best year in a long time, throwing for 3,986 yards, with 24 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
-
Ken O'Brien, QB – Seattle Seahawks
-
Ken was released by the Raiders and signed as a backup with the Seahawks this year. He didn't play a down, and Seattle finished 9-7.
-
Dan Marino, QB – Green Bay Packers
-
Dan continued to play well for the Packers, throwing for 3,641 yards, with 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. They finished 7-9 however. Will Dan ever get another chance at that Super Bowl ring?
-
Darrell Green, CB – Washington Redskins
-
Darrell Green was one of the best cornerbacks in the league for many years, and a big part of the Redskins' success. He was a two time All-Pro and finishes his career 1st in all-time passes defensed and 8th in all-time interceptions.

-
Henry Ellard, WR – Los Angeles Rams
-
Henry played his whole career for the Rams, and was an amazing player. In 12 seasons, aside from the one year lost to injury, he had over 1,000 receiving yards in all but one, and had at least 1,200 yards in 9 seasons. He leaves the league 1st in all-time receptions, 2nd in all-time receiving yards, and 2nd in all-time receiving touchdowns. He was a 5 time All-Pro and won 2 championship rings with the Rams.

-
Leonard Marshall, DE – New York Giants
-
Leonard was a solid, but not flashy player for the Giants on the d-line. His best year was 1987, where he had 72 tackles and 16.5 sacks (earning his only All-Pro award.) Unfortunately he was never able to equal that performance and reached 10 sacks only once in the next 6 seasons.

-
Darryl Talley, LB – Buffalo Bills
-
Darryl was a consistent starter for the Bills for most of his 12 seasons, and ended his career 1st in career tackles and assists for the Bills. He never won any awards, but was a solid blue-collar player – his best year was in 1987 where he had 99 tackles, 18 assists, and 4 sacks.

-
Richard Dent, DE – Chicago Bears
-
Richard was a solid fixture on the defensive line for Chicago for 12 years, and had four seasons with more than 10 sacks – his best year being in 1989 with 45 tackles and 17.5 sacks, earning him his only All-Pro nod. He leaves the league 7th on the all-time sacks list and 3rd on the all-time hurries list.
-

-
Anthony Carter, WR – New York Giants
-
Anthony played occasionally for the Giants this year in their run to the Super Bowl, catching 27 passes for 423 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Notable Draft Picks
-
Ray Lewis, LB – Dallas Cowboys, #1
Keyshawn Johnson, WR – San Francisco 49ers, #2
Brian Dawkins, S – San Diego Chargers, #9
Marvin Harrison, WR – Carolina Wildcats, #10
Eddie George, RB – Tampa Bay Buccaneers, #13
Tedi Bruschi, LB – Cincinnati Bengals, #14

The Minnesota Vikings faced the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl this year. The Vikings have a dominant offense with QB Erik Kramer and RB Barry Sanders, the Chiefs have QB sensation Ty Detmer (ooh, a cold shiver went up my back as I typed that,) and one of the toughest pass defenses in the league. In the end Kramer was better than the Chiefs, and threw for 338 yards and 4 touchdown passes to lead the Vikings to the win, 31-28.
-
Top Performances
-
Brett Favre won back-to-back MVPs for the Jacksonville Rowdies, throwing for 3,991 yards with 26 touchdowns and 8 interceptions.
Ty Detmer of the Chiefs led the league in passing yards and touchdowns, with 4,649 and 40. A lot of people felt he was robbed of the MVP award this year.
Jerome Bettis of the Seahawks ran for 1,654 yards this year, and 16 touchdowns.
O.J. McDuffie of the Redskins led the league in receiving with 1,660 yards and 17 receiving touchdowns.
Linebacker Mark D'Onofrio of the Packers led the league with 145 tackles.
-
John Elway, QB – Denver Broncos
-
John remained rock-solid and consistent this year, throwing for 3,673 yards, with 26 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. The Broncon went 11-5 this season, before losing to Jacksonville and Brett Favre in the playoffs.
-
Jim Kelly, QB – Buffalo Bills
-
Jim was a team leader and very reliable quarterback for the Bills for 13 seasons. He was never named All-Pro and never won a championship ring, but goes out #1 for the Bills in virtually all passing stats. Unfortunately the Bills only made the playoffs in 2 of Jim's seasons with the Bills.

-
Ken O'Brien, QB – Detroit Lions
-
Ken doesn't have much left, but he must have a hell of an agent, as he gets another starting job this year with Detroit. He played well, throwing for 3,489 yards, with 15 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, leading a miserable Lions team to a 3-13 record.
-
Dan Marino, QB – Green Bay Packers
-
The Packers had a disappointing 6-10 season but Dan remained on top of his game, having his best year since 1992 with 4,307 passing yards, 27 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
-
Anthony Carter, WR – Miami Dolphins
-
Anthony was a talented player who struggled to make his mark in the NFL. He played for Miami for most of his career, but only broke 1,000 receiving yards in the final two years with the Dolphins. He never won any awards, but goes out as Miami's #3 in receptions, #2 in receiving yards, and #3 in receiving touchdowns.

Incredibly, this year's Super Bowl is an exact rematch of last years, with the Vikings facing the Chiefs. The outcome was the same as last year, with Erik Kramer throwing three touchdowns to win the game and Barry Sanders running for 102 yards with another score. Final score, Vikings 28, Chiefs 21.
-
Top Performers
-
Erik Kramer of the Vikings won this years' MVP award, throwing for 4,840 yards, with 35 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.
Napoleon Kaufman of the Browns led the league in rushing with 1,328 yards and 7 touchdowns.
Tim Brown of the Vikings led the league in receiving with 1,756 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Chester McGlockton of Dallas led the league in sacks with 17 – just ahead of his teammate at Dallas, Bryant Young, who had 16.
-
John Elway, QB – Denver Broncos
-
John is still playing with all the fire he had as a younger man, and he had his best year since 1990 – throwing for 4,206 yards with 29 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. The Broncos went 13-3 on the year and beat the Jets in the playoffs before falling to the Chiefs.
-
Ken O'Brien, QB – Carolina Wildcats
-
Ken was a backup all year and didn't throw a pass.
-
Dan Marino, QB – Green Bay Packers
-
Green Bay was terrible this year, 1-15, and Dan was the only bright spot, throwing for 4,305 yards with 19 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.

The St. Louis Cardinals beat the Baltimore Colts in the Super Bowl this year, 35-24. Cardinals' QB Randall Cunningham couldn't be stopped, throwing for 3 TDs and 290 yards.
-
Top Performers
-
Randall Cunningham of the Cardinals won the MVP this year, making it back-to-back awards for him. He passed for 4,285 yards with 38 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
Terrell Davis of the 49ers led the league in rushing with a patriotic 1,776 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Muhsin Muhammad of the Cardinals had a great year, with 117 catches for 1,762 yards and 15 touchdowns. He's already got 34 touchdown catches in three seasons!
Otis Smith, cornerback for the Colts, led the league with 9 interceptions – he had 12 last year, and is probably the top corner in the league right now.
-
John Elway, QB – Denver Broncos
-
John announced his retirement in the offseason, disappointing many Bronco fans. He was immediately named a Legend of the Game, and for good reason. In 15 seasons with the Broncos, he led them to a Super Bowl title, won one MVP award in 1991, and had 3 All-Pro awards. But this isn't just about awards – he was consistently one of the best QBs in the league, year in and year out. He goes out at #2 all-time in passing yards and passing touchdowns (behind Marino.)

-
Ken O'Brien, QB – Jacksonville Rowdies
-
Ken announced his retirement from football. Ken never won any awards, but stayed in football for 15 years with a variety of teams – the Jets, Rowdies, Raiders, and Lions. He spent a lot of time on the bench but had 6 or 7 good starting seasons in there – his best year was 1990 with Jacksonville.

-
Dan Marino, QB – Green Bay Packers
-
Green Bay, armed with their #1 overall pick Robert Edwards, rallied to an 8-8 season this year, and looks like a team on the upswing. Unfortunately Dan didn't have much to do with it this year, as he went down with a broken leg in Week 3 and missed the rest of the season. He passed for 668 yards with 5 touchdowns in the 3 games. Will he want to rehab his injury at his age and come back next year?

Dan Marino, QB – Green Bay Packers

Dan retired, as his injury looked very serious and he hardly has anything to prove at this point. Despite Dan's ongoing disappointment at never winning a Super Bowl ring, he goes out as the best quarterback of all time. He won the MVP award twice, was a four time All-Pro, and leads the league all time in pass attempts, pass completions, passing yards, and passing touchdowns.

Well that's it for the Legend of 83 - it was fun tracking all these real life players - I'd say most performed close to their RL counterparts, with a few exceptions. Henry Ellard was definitely a lot better in the FOF version, and Clayton and Carter were a lot worse.

Here's the team performances over the 15 seasons I ran - Elway led the Broncos to be the best overall team, though they had trouble in the playoffs. The Cardinals really impress me and they continue to be very good. El Paso just never got going in the league.

Poor Marino.

Ken O'Brien did a lot better than I thought he would.

Yeah even in the virtual world, Marino still can't win a ring.
