Another voice I would love to hear from on today's issues.

RIP Big John

I missed the heyday of the Big East as a student/fan, graduating from Syracuse in '00. Thompson was still around towards the end of the 90s but the Syracuse/Georgetown rivalry had died down. I remember those teams and coaches going at it in the 80s though.

I lived in DC from '84-'90. Given the age I was then and how Thompson was presented by the media, etc. he is one of those guys who will always be legendary in my mind, larger than life so to speak.

My college girlfriend, a semi sports fan, would always end the cheer with "Beat Georgetown" no matter who we (Syracuse) were playing, in any sport. That's how it ought to be.

Respect.

One my first college basketball games, likely in the late 80s / early 90s was Pitt-Georgetown game. It was such a big game they moved it to the Civic Area which had a capacity of 16,000 from the on campus location which only fit 6,600. That was all because of how big John Thompson made Georgetown.

As an opponent fan the Georgetown press was just so frustrating because that big run was always lurking.

I'm sure everybody romanticizes the sports eras of their youth but as a baskeball-mad kid in junior high, coaches in the late-80s Big East all seem larger than life in my memory - Thompson, Boeheim, Massimino, Calhoun, P.J. Carlesimo, Lou Carnesecca. Even the second-tier guys from that time like Rick Barnes and Jim O'Brien are well-known.
