Wow, that Walter Fritz is quite a conman. Those last few paragraphs made me shudder just as they did the author. That was definitely Fritz's attempt to destroy the author's reputation. And Dr. Karen King looks awful in the story. Totally hoodwinked and didn't care that she was - just liked the limelight.

Fantastic find (pun semi-intended). The Atlantic is my favorite periodical - so many good pieces. When I taught Contemporary Issues in College Sports, I used Taylor Branch's "The Shame of College Sports" as the first reading (although it's now dated in many respects, of course.)

I made the mistake of skipping down to the comments thinking I could find some further exposition, but it might as well have been YouTube comments. How did all those window lickers make it through that article?

You can feel the grease ooze off that dude from the instant he enters the story, the particular words he uses don't even matter, as he's just hitting all the generic con man/sociopath signifiers on cue. 75% of the people he came across were instantly able to identify him as a sleazeball, but somehow he was able to fool everybody critical to his scheme. Of course all of the folks who trusted him necessarily wanted to believe he was selling, before they'd even met him. I suppose that's the point...everybody he meets/interacts with is potentially critical to a scheme, one which may be completely new, or he may just tie you into one (or more) of the dozens he has spinning.
I think his most impressive feat was the ability to work backwards....like he appeared to just stumble into his marks, and actions appeared to be tied to his constantly fluctuating finances, so he was seemingly always acting somewhat randomly, yet he was always able to tie all that random shit together and dismiss it with a (still questionable but) technically flawless backstory/alibi/provenance, sometimes on the fly and adjusted for audience. Truly impressive. That said, I like to believe I'm one of the folks who would be immune to his act the second I saw those snake eyes and he started talking about the awesome black Harley he usually drives.

King's response is that she agrees, it's now likely a forgery after reviewing the article and such
