Izulde Jestor and FBCB: An Actual Coaching Dynasty
So with a zeroed out coach (because I'm a glutton for punishment), I'm taking over the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, one of 5 teams in the default FBCB file with a prestige below 5, and last making the NIT in 1974.
Setup Can declare only as juniors Non-5th year must redshirt, and redshirts in general can't be refused CBI and CIT are eliminated The NCAA tournament is scaled back to 64 teams, with the NIT elevated to 40 teams. The ugliness is what you expect. Point Guards Code:
Mark Eanes is the best player on the whole roster, and of course he's a senior. Nobody else even comes close to his passing and handling skills, or his all around game. Code:
Delmer Toole is certainly a tool alright, and he's so bad, I'm tempted just to cut him outright. Except we have 4 seniors on the roster, so we're already up against it as far as recruiting goes, so he'll stick around. Code:
Dumbassery aside, I'm kind of excited about Robert "Fatass" Renfroe. He can develop into a great shooter if this is accurate, and develop into our primary scorer. I'm going to actually do more than hit Rec on training this season, and I'll devote time to developing him into a shooter. Shooting Guards Code:
Richard Joplin has potential to be another exciting shooter, but sucks everywhere else. At least our offense could be really interesting in a couple years' time. Code:
Horace Gordon sucks, and is the new first cut candidate. Code:
I love long 2 guards, so Edmond Casey will probably start there, unless one of the SFs impresses me. Really needs to bump up his perimeter defense. Small Forwards Code:
The Canadian is smart, but awful at basketball. Moving on. Code:
God, this team sucks. Code:
Buck Dalessio is the best of a bad SF lot. I'm probably going to say fuck it and run a 3 guard lineup this first year. Power Forwards Code:
Czech it out. A sucky, smart player. Code:
Forwards need a ton of recruiting this season. Code:
Tony Everette is the only forward on the roster not a walking stiff, and of course he's a senior. Penciled in as the starter. Centers Code:
Good rebounding upside and fantastic size. Edward Yarber is definitely getting playing time as a freshman, though whether that's a starter or a reserve is TBD. Code:
Lot of internationals on this roster. Herman Leitl will in fact be our starting SF and one of our primary offensive threats. Happily, he's a junior! Yay! Doesn't have the size or the rebounding to play big. Code:
Werner Griffin is our best defender, and will man the PF spot I think. Projected Starting Lineup PG Mark Eanes (Sr) SG Edmond Casey (RS Jr) SF Hermann Leitl (Jr) PF Werner Griffin (RS Sr) C Edward Yarber (Fr)

We lose a stud in recruiting to St. Joseph's and Hermann Leitl gets suspended for the fall semester. Du bist einen Asel, Hermann!
Settings Pace: 0 Motion: 4 3 Point: 3 Focus: Outside Defense: 1-3-1 Zone Press: 0 Trap: 1 Double Inside: 9 Double Outside: 7 Key Players: Mark Eanes and Robert Renfroe Tony Everette gets the call at SF. Oh, and the settings are all the recommended ones, save for zone, where suddenly the AI wanted me to switch from 1-3-1 zone to 3-2. Eh, no. Game #1 @ Manhattan (0-1) Code:
Senior Michael Shankle is a blocking god with the handles of an elite point guard. McKinley Gill and Derek Proffitt are a pair of fantastic 3 point shooters, but this is a team that we *should* be able to hang with. I somehow screw up and Richard Joplin is the starting SG. He draws a foul on the opening possession, allowing me to change to my actual lineup. Good thing, too, because Tony Everette makes his first shot. Edward Yarber wins the tipoff, but picks up 2 very quick fouls - on back to back possessions, no less. We're barely a minute into the fucking game. I shift everyone down a slot and put Robert Renfroe in at PG. We're down 2-5, after the free throw. Edmond Casey is called for a technical on a foul, so he's got a quick 2. Soon it's 2-15, and I'm We get about halfway through the first and Mark Eanes gets his second foul, so I put Edmond Casey back in. Fuck it. Robert Renfroe gets whistled for a second not long after. At halftime we're down 21-41, and Edward Yarber and Mark Eanes both have 3 fouls. They're shooting 57.1% to our 26.9%., have 25 boards to our 12, and yeah, it's just ugly. Code:
Yeah, this was just ugly. @ VCU (0-0) They'll destroy us, I'm sure. 2 blue guys and 2 green ones. 2 fast fouls for Mark Eanes. Robert Renfroe's stupid ass comes on and fouls an opponent on a 3 pointer (made all 3 of course), and then gets whistled for a taunting technical after making his own 3, so Fatass just gave away 5 points. We actually do a fairly decent job of hanging around, down 15-28 with 9:28 left in the first half. But then they get hot, and what was already over becomes even more so. 28-52 at half. Code:
Tales of a sucky team sucking, really.

Best of luck! The inherited teams can be very frustrating. Of course, so can the ones you've recruited. FBCB has to be my favorite text sim ever.
Also, that is a garbage fire of a roster. I'm sorry. Last edited by Emmett13 : 07-03-2015 at 02:34 AM. |

I have no idea what controls rebounding in training, because there's no thing for it. Overall, it's meh. I suspect one of the reasons we're getting killed in rebounding is that idiotic 1-3-1 zone, so we're going to switch to a 2-3 zone for the rest of the year. Also, Robert "Fatass" Renfroe will be the starting 2 guard for the next few games. Might as well get our best shooter on the court as a starter. And yes, that means we're starting a 5'9 and 5'8 backcourt. At this point, if we manage to lose a game by less than 20 points, I'll consider that a moral victory. @ Indiana State (3-2) On paper, Larry Bird's alma mater looks somewhat beatable. But they, you know, have 3 wins, and we can't even look halfway competitive. It's 18:52 before someone scores, and it's Robert "Fatass" Renfroe making 1 of 2 free throws. It's 15:18 before a bucket is made, and it's Tony Everette with an assist from Werner Griffin. Once again, Edward Yarber with 2 fairly fast fouls. 11:49 sees us fall behind for the first time all game, ending the longest stretch of dominance for UMES in the Izulde Jestor era. At the halfway mark, we're down 10-13, thanks to a stupid foul by Edmond Casey and 2 costly turnovers. He'll get benched the rest of the half. Buck Delassio is injured at the 7:40 mark, so the really tall Gerald Benson will get his first PT of the year, with us down 12-15. I'm sure you can guess what happens next. They suddenly make *all* the 3 pointers and we keep turning the ball over to go down 20-44 at the half. Code:
We held them under 80 points and only lost by 28 points! PROGRESS, YO! Buck Dalessio is out 9 days with a sprained ankle. Mixed recruiting news. We lose players to Tennessee Tech and Murray State, but on the other hand we get... Code:
Moral of the story: Never give up when players only show Average interest after the initial High, because you never know what happens. He's an undersized 4, and a tweener, which Jestorball normally hates, but we need actual talent on this roster. Should end up a great player if those potentials are realistic. Code:
We were his #1 choice from Day 1, and I sure as hell am not going to pass up a kid who the moment he steps on the court will be our best 3 point shot. Both these pickups look like they should be four year starters for us at PF and SG respectively.

vs Old Dominion (1-1)
Fun fact: Izulde was accepted to ODU's MFA program, but wasn't given an assistantship, so he passed on it. Then the offer came from UNLV with asisistantship, and the rest is history. I wonder how different my life would have been had I gone from Arkansas to Virginia instead of Las Vegas. I darn sure don't regret it. Anyway, this is another team that will clobber us, even though we're at home. Tony Everette plays like a man possessed and gets 6 points and 3 rebounds in the early going to have us up 6-5. It's 14-14 later, with Everette having 8 points, 4 boards. But then the old MAKE ALL THE 3 POINTERS kicks in, and we're getting absolutely crushed on the boards. But miracle of miracles, we're only down 28-35 at the half, the first time ever we've been within shouting distance at the break, and that's with Edward Yarber sitting with 3 fouls. We don't score again until 12:48 in the second half, and by then, we're down by 16. They bring in their scrubs for the last 4 minutes, which puts a dent in our moral victory of losing by less than 20. Code:
@ Pennsylvania (2-3) The first time we can *maybe* genuinely compete with in terms of color ratings, but their players look more talented than the Rainbow suggests, so it's another ass-whipping on tap most likely. They run a small lineup though: 5'3 PG 6'0 SG 6'4 SF 6'6 PF 6'7 C as opposed to us with 5'8 PG 5'9 SG 6'5 SF 6'9 PF 7' C I won't mention how fucking stupid this first 11 minutes is. Oh wait, I will. They're shooting volume 3s and have made 70% of them. That puts us down 25-40 at the half. At 3:38, Tony Everette becomes the first Hawk to foul out of a game in the Jestorball era. Code:
11 of 22 from 3 point range. And their tiny ass team outboarded us 34-24. I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry at this point.

You know, I almost feel bad for the rest of the guys on the roster. How shitty a player do you have to be to be on one of the worst basketball teams in college history, and yet you can't get any PT?
@ Tennessee Tech They stole a recruit from us, so I really want to kick their asses. And that might be possible. Despite their 3-2 record, they're not very good. A couple of standout players, though. Tony Everette is great again early, racking up 7 points to keep us close despite again getting torched from 3. But then our bigs get in foul trouble, forcing us to play scrubs. We can't hit free throws, and they hit enough for a 47-30 advantage at the break. Code:
Edmond Casey is out 9 days with an injury. As you can see, the scrubs got their longest looks this game. Emmett Chung might get more PT. vs #8 Maryland ... We win the tipoff. It's 0-13 before Edward Yarber sinks a couple of free throws. 10 points finally comes with 4:07 left in the first half. Code:
We lost by only 39 against a Top 25 team! WHOOOOOO!

@ Robert Morris (2-4)
This is a team that's authentically as bad as we are, so maybe we can grind out a win here. In looking them over, I notice they've a couple good post defenders. So I think for this game, we're going to start our 3 point shooters and try and hit the long ball. They have one good 3 point shooter as well, who we'll stick Edmond Casey on and double team outside. And of course the 3 point shooter nails both his treys to quickly put us down 0-8. We quickly abandon the 3 point game, because it doesn't fucking matter, and they keep making whatever shots they want to, despite being supposedly a really shit team on offense. Halftime score is 13-40. And of course, we don't score again until 15:39 left in the game. Code:
At least that's a new record for lowest amount of points an opponent scored? @ American (4-4) Yeah, we'll get slaughtered by them, too. Back to our old lineup, though Edmond Casey is doing enough to take over at SF. 30 seconds into the game, Werner Griffin is forced out with injury. Awesome. Ugly basketball is ugly. We don't score until 13:08, but we're still only down 2-4 at that point. Cue their 3 point barrage as per usual. And yet, we're only down by 7 at the half, the closest we've been, I think. That's due to getting a lot of free throws and actually hitting them. The lineup right now is Eanes/Joplin/Dalessio/Everette/Yarber. Maybe they should be my new starters. We hang around for a while in the second half, but when Edward Yarber fouls out, and with the injury to Griffin, they pull away. Tony Everette fouls out as well, but we're already down by well into double-digits at that point. Code:
We've lost a game by less than 20!!! YAY!. Out for 8 days is Werner Griffin, which is unfortunate. But we'll just try out some different lineups and see how they go, I suppose.

@ New Hampshire (2-7)
Their roster is almost as big a garbage fire as ours, especially with two seniors academically suspended. One elite 3 point shooter and one top-notch post defender. We'll run with the Eames/Joplin/Dalessio/Everette/Yarber five that kept us close in the last game. We're quickly down 4-16 as we shoot 14.3% to their 75%. Fucking ridiculous. THIS ENGINE CHEATS, I SWEAR TO FUCKING GOD! We're down 13-34 at the half. Code:
Time to go back to the 1-3-1 zone, as we're marginally competent in that. vs Iowa State (7-1) Yeah, okay. Tony Everette moves to SF, Werner Griffin back at PF. For the first 3 and a half minutes, no one misses a shot on either side. Then misses start happening, but Richard Joplin nails a 3 to put us up 13-11 at 14:33. We stay in the lead or tied until just after the halfway mark of the first period, when they convert a 3 point play. At the half, we're down by 9. They completely take over the second half. Code:
@ Bucknell (4-6) We should be competitive, but we never are. Same old story of their making everything, us not able to find a shot. This is starting to get really fucking old. Down 15-29 at the break. Code:
Yeah.

@ #20 New Mexico (11-0
I'm tempted just to sim, but we'll grimly press on. Imagine my shock when we're actually up 17-15 with 9:51 left in the half. Even better, we hold it until 5:28 left in the half, and then lose it. Surprisingly, we don't give up the fight, and are only down by 5 at halftime against the undefeated #20 team in the country. And of course they completely take over in the second half. Code:
No news on the recruiting front, but Hermann Leichtl comes back from suspension and whines about playing time. DUDE, YOU'VE BEEN FUCKING SUSPENDED ALL SEMESTER! This is one of those FBCB quirks that really irritates the shit out of me. Oh, some scrub is complaining about PT as well, but don't care. Conference play starts next. Code:
Maybe we can actually win a few games this year! And of course we open at Coppin State.

I just realized you were playing with the default generated players. Ouch, you're a much better man than me. I've always got to sim at least a little history just to flush that initial batch of players out, as the players that it gives to the sub 5 teams are unrealistically bad. Although, given that you're in one of the worst conferences you probably have a lot of teams on your level so it all evens out!
Keep going! I know how awful coaching through those horrible seasons can be, although I can't say I've ever started 0-13. I think my worst ever was probably a 5-24 or so. Last edited by Emmett13 : 07-03-2015 at 04:39 PM. |

I always start at the beginning, even though yeah, this team is soo horrendous. As long as we avoid last place, I'm cool with it. Especially since our two commits look like huge improvements.

Code:
One thing I wish FBCB had that DDS has is defensive metrics. Makes it really difficult to judge how people are on the defensive side of the ball IMO. So it seems fairly clear that Werner Griffin should be the starting C in our new lineup. Tony Everette will be PF, the complaining German SF, and we'll go with Robert "Fatass" Renfroe at SG. Mark Eames is of course the PG. Code:
They have a really good roster for this level IMO, and should be able to contend for the title. @ Coppin State (6-7) (0-1) They lost their conference opener on the road at South Carolina State, so they're probably really cheesed off coming into this one. We still can't shoot worth a damn, but at least the Eagles are bad enough that we're only down 20-29 at the break. I <3 MEAC play or something. Of course, this is where they'll score all the points in the second half. It's looking like just that as they stretch their lead out to 16, but we fight back for the first time all season to get within the original 9, but it's 1:45 left, so we're going to put our 3 point shooters on the floor and go for nothing but treys. Unfortunately, it's not enough. Code:
Hey, we were actually competitive for once, and lost in single digits. vs Delaware State 2-11 (1-0) Code:
Thankfully Ted Corley is a senior, because he's a 3 point shooting god in this universe. I'm going to switch to the 3-2 for this game, and keep a double team on his ass at all times. He sucks at handling, so Mark Eanes is going to be high pressure on him at all times, and we'll double-team him. Aaand Mark Eanes draws two quick fouls. Don't care. But then he picks up his third foul 7 minutes in with us barely hanging on to a 9-8 lead. We actually widen our lead to 15-9, because Edmond Casey hits a couple 3s and he has 13 of our 15 points. Dude is just on fire. Robert "Fatass" Renfroe, as our second best perimeter defender, is tailing Ted Corley wherever he goes, even at SF. Buck Delassio is our third best perimeter defender, so when Renfroe gets tired, he draws the assignment on Corley. And we have a 26-13 halftime lead!!!! Edmond Casey has 20 points in the first half, as I keep riding his hot hand. We're holding Delaware State to 21.1% shooting, and Ted Corley has 4 points and 5 rebounds. Great work we're doing containing him so far. At 14:25, Ted Corley has started heating up, and now has double-digit points, cutting our lead to 7, but then he picks up his 4th foul - a HUGE break for us. We'll use that time to give Mark Eanes a break on the bench for when we really need him. 4:05 left. Still no sign of Ted Corley, but our lead is chopped to 5, as we suddenly can't hit a bucket. 2:40 left. In comes Ted Corley, and we're still up by 5. Mark Eanes hops on to go and shut him down, hopefully. John Sanchez, one of their post players, has gotten hot, so Werner Griffin gets the call on defense, and we'll double him, too. 2:07 - One of their starters fouls out - not Ted Corley, unfortunately. Edmond Casey hits both of his free throws. We're up by 7. 1:57 - 3 pointer by Ted Corley. Up by 4. 0:51 - We're up 50-42. Ted Corley misses 2 free throws. I tell the team to use the clock. [b]HAWKS WIN!!!! HAWKS WIN!!!!! HAWKS WIN!!!! Code:
What an incredible game by Edmond Casey. Wins like this are what get people hooked on dealing with the coaching. You devise a strategy to take down an opponent, and use your best-performing players. If I'd simmed this, Corley would have shredded us, and it'd be yet another loss. Instead, we're 1-1 in conference play and have our first victory of the season.

After looking at things more closely, I realize Hermann Leitl is actually a great post defender alongside Werner Griffin, and that's he's not suited to play the 3. So he and Tony Everette will swap spots, and I'll use Edmond Casey as a reserve at the 2 and 3.
vs Hampton (5-9, 2-0) Code:
The Pirates are leading the MEAC, and have a pretty balanced roster. Only one good 3 point shooter, however, so we'll go with the 2-3. Two great post defenders, some good ball thieves, and quality shotblocking. This is going to be a tough matchup. It doesn't start off that way, though, as [b]Robert "Fatass" Renfroe[/b drills two 3s and they can't make anything, giving us a quick 8-0 lead and forcing them to burn a timeout. But then they catch up and it's tied 18-18 by the middle of the half. Buoyed by Robert "Fatass" Renfroe's 17 points, we're hanging to a 32-29 lead at halftime. We're massively outshooting them, but they're hammering us on the glass, so it's been an evenly matched game. Our lead evaporates because we just can't keep them off the boards no matter what we do. Edward Yarber does nothing in that arena when we give him minutes, and since that's his only real skill, he isn't going to be playing much. A run gets us back to within 2, but by 4:55 left, we're down by 14 and forced to bring in an all 3 point shooters lineup, with our tallest guy 6'4. Code:
We just had no answers for Pless owning us on the boards. Thankfully he's a senior. @ Norfolk State (4-12) (3-1) Code:
Jamison Smith is the danger man, and it's enough for a 3-2 zone. He's a sophomore to boot, so one we'll face for a long time. Their defense is pretty good for this level, but all 3 of their MEAC wins have been by 3 points or less. It's a back and forth affair, with no team able to stake out more than a lead of a few points. Jamison Smith gets to 3 fouls late in the first half, which is nice. Unfortunately, they get hot at the end of the half and take a 26-18 lead. It turns into a second half rout, because we're shooting 26.9% to their 60%+. Fuck you, FBCB engine. FUCK YOU. Code:
Disgraceful. @ Morgan State (6-9, 2-2) Code:
This team is a lot better than their conference record indicates. We're never in it, down 22-35 at half, and that's all she wrote. Code:
vs South Carolina State (10-6, 4-1) Fantastic team for this level. Rout predicted. And it's looking like that as we're down 1-7 early, but then Edmond Casey comes off the bench to hit 3 straight triples, and we sneak a 14-12 lead. That lasts not long at all, and we're quickly down 22-36 at the half. Code:
Remember that great win, or the first two conference games where it was actually close? Yeah, me neither.

Thanks. I'm hoping Doiron's A potential rating in offensive rebounding is legit, and we've one more game left this month to see what happens.

@ Florida A&M (4-14, 1-5)
Code:
They have two elite defenders and one okay 3 point shooter, but overall, I feel like this is a team we can beat. But we start off shooting 7.7% and their PG is gobbling up rebounds to put us down 3-11. We're still down at the break - 13-18. Both teams are shooting terribly (18.2% for us, 32% for them). By 11:32 left in the game, we've fought back to take a 28-26 lead, Werner Griffin leading the charge along with Mark Eames. I've settled into a rotation that has either Tony Everette or Edward Yarber at the 5 to increase our rebounding opportunities, shifting Griffin to the 4. Buck Delassio is contributing points off the bench as well as a SG. From there, we expand our lead to 7, and we're still up by 6 with 4:32 left when one of their starters fouls out. The lead gets to 10, and suddenly we start giving up shots and turning the ball over, down to 4 point advantage with 3:05 left. 1:55 - After expanding our lead due to a Buck Delassio FG and enough FTs, it's cut to 5 again after they make a 3 pointer. I put in the best FT group I can assemble while staying position true, and hope it's enough. 1:39 - Their leading scorer for the game fouls out, and Dennis Debouvines, center in the ill-fated all 3s lineup, and who just made a key defensive board on the last possession, makes 1 of 2. Up by 6. Code:
Interestingly enough, Dennis Debouvines was the guy they fouled all the time late game, and he made 4 of 6 from the line. Talk about being a just clutch enough guy. In the end, we outshot them 37.2% to 31.4%, as Eanes played all but the last 2 minutes of the game, and I rotated PF between Werner Griffin and Hermann Leitl to make sure we always had a good post defender in the game. Funny how both our wins have seen a reserve emerge as Player of the Game. I don't doubt we'd be winless still if I was just simming. Code:
That was a huge win for us, giving a 2 game lead on last place. @ Delaware State (6-14, 5-2) Code:
Ted Corley is out another 21 days with a torn ligament. They've managed to go 2-1 since he's been out - a 4 point win over North Carolina A&T, and a 1 point win over Bethune-Cookman, so they're definitely vulnerable, but still have the 3 point shooters to give us trouble. Neither team can shoot, but they're making 3 pointers, and we're not. Still, we fight our way back to a 16-19 halftime deficit. Unfortunately they keep hitting their shots and we keep committing turnovers, their lead expanding to 10. We don't get any closer than 4 the rest of the way. Code:
Absolutely embarrassing loss. No excuse for that, even on the road. But I guess these Hornets keep finding ways to put the sting on people.

vs Norfolk State
Code:
They steamrolled us at their place in the second half, which I'm still very angry about. They're favored, but we maybe can get something out of this. Maybe. We're on fire in the early going tonight, and Jamison Smith gets his second foul 8 minutes in with us having a 15-6 lead, keyed by Mark Eanes. They charge back with a couple of 3 point plays to get within 6, but by halftime, we're up 38-30 due to Hermann Leitl and Werner Griffin each stepping up inside. We've also blown a couple of fast break opportunities, though. 4 point play by Robert "Fatass" Renfroe!!!! So, so beautiful. Even prettier? Early in the second, Jamison Smith gets a 4th foul. But then they keep gradually chipping away at our lead and draw to within 4 points. Neither team is playing defense worth shit right now. 54-50 with 8:59 left to go. After we increase to 8, thanks to free throws and tip-ins on second chance opportunities, Norfolk State calls a timeout. But Mark Eanes, who has been good all game, takes over, and salts this one away with great shooting and getting to the line!!! Code:
Ridiculous FTA disparity, and the Spartans are complaining about home cooking. Perhaps they're justified, but we'll take the upset victory anyway. We're 3 games ahead of still MEAC-winless Howard, and 2 up over 2nd to last Florida A&M, whom we beat on the road. @ Howard (2-20, 0-9) Their noncon wins were Texas State, and a 2 point victory over North Carolina Central. Code:
David Beauchamp is their best player, an elite ballthief by any measure, so I have to make sure our top handlers are at the point at all times. This means Mark Eanes (despite his flameouts now and again), and some guy who has never gotten any minutes ever. The Bison are a complete joke in terms of their perimeter defense and, well, pretty much everywhere other than Beauchamp and an elite shotblocker they have (Charles Jimenez). If we lose, I'm going to be supremely pissed. Wow, this team is laughably bad. 5 turnovers in the first 5 and a half minutes, and we're up 14-2. The Bison call a timeout and try to regroup. Unfortunately, David Beauchamp is whistled for his second foul immediately after, which doesn't help them any. But then they start hitting their shots and we start missing, and the gap closes to 5 in too much of a hurry. And then they're ahead by 1 after a 3 pointer. I throw my cup in fury. WTF?!?! WE'RE ACTUALLY DOWN BY 3 AT HALFTIME. WHAT THE EVERLIVING FUCK ARE YOU FUCKNUTS DOING?! HOW THE FUCK ARE THEY SHOOTING 55% WHEN ALL OUR BEST DEFENDERS ARE ON THE FLOOR AND THEY FUCKING SUCK ASS AT ALL THE FUCKING SHOTS?! FUCK THIS RANDOM ASS BULLSHIT! Code:
61.9% from the floor and 80% from 3 point range. And their best shooting ratings are 30 inside, 36 jumper, and 37 from 3 point... and I had my best defenders on the court most of the time, WHO ARE ACTUALLY A LOT BETTER THAN THESE FUCKNOZZLES. So how in the motherfucking RNG HELL do we fucking lose by 20... 20! to a team that averages fucking 40 points a game and gives up 61?! HOW?!

So evidently the guys went out drinking and fucking D.C. hipster girls before the game, and obvs didn't take Howard seriously, especially after we went up 14-2 early. Hipster girls are bad people, folks, and manic pixie dream girls are a motherfucking lie.
vs Florida A&M (4-18, 1-8) We just played these guys two games ago and beat them on their turf. After the assfest in D.C., I bitch out the team and tell them they better not fucking slack off this game. So what happens? Werner Griffin and Robert "Fatass" Renfroe both get hit with technicals for arguing foul calls. So of course we go into the locker room down by 5 points. We never do get in it, the Rattlers biting us all night long. Code:
vs Coppin State (15-9, 9-2) These guys are legit good. And the way we've sucked ass lately, this is gonna be a massacre. And that's exactly what it is. For the third straight game, our shooting stinks rotten eggs, 22.7% in the first half, to go in with a 21-39 halftime deficit. Code:
Let's be totally honest. At this point, we're just playing out the string and hoping our 3 wins will somehow be enough to avoid the bottom. vs North Carolina A&T (5-19, 4-7) Code:
On paper, these guys look beatable. But we've played so poorly lately, I'm not taking anything for granted. They've got some big guys in the paint, so I'll give Edward Yarber a start. It's tight early, but once again, they make all the shots and we can't hit anything, so we're down by 16 at the half. Their shooting tanks in the second half, but ours isn't any better. Code:
What's really frustrating is that Robert "Fatass" Renroe and Richard Joplin are supposed to be good shooters, but they don't show it at all. vs Morgan State (13-13, 8-5) Just a note that Howard and Florida A&M got wins. So the three bad teams are all tied at the bottom. Same old story. Close early, but then Hermann Leitl is hurt with us down by 5. And of course they fucking make a 3 pointer as the halftime buzzer sounds to increase their lead to 6 We get to within 3 at several points, but can never close the gap more than that. Code:
Bleh. @ Bethune-Cookman (7-21, 7-8) Hermann Leichtl is at 83%. We're now officially in last place in the 3 way tie. Edmond Casey will start at SF, with Tony Everette moving to PF. Contributions from a lot of different people, most notably Mark Eanes's 7 points, carry us to a 23-18 halftime lead. I'm sure that's not going to last though, because this is UMES we're talking about - U a mess all right. Lead builds to 11 in the second half and they call a timeout. But tonight, we're riding the five who are hitting their shots - Eanes/Dalessio/Casey/Griffin/Yarber - only subbing out with Tiredness. Bethune-Cookman rallies, and I'm suddenly afraid we're going to piss it all away in the waning seconds. But we do just enough to scrape out the critical 4th victory of the season. Code:
We may be even worse next year with all of our seniors gone, no matter how promising our freshmen might look. Code:
1 game left. We play South Carolina State and Florida A&M draws Howard. How unfair is that shit? Such bullshit. We were far ahead of everyone else on a big man, and he fucking goes to Winthrop. Screwed and screwed some more.

@ South Carolina State
COME ON, BISON!!! We're actually hanging in there, down by only 4 late in the first half when Deangelo Johnson, one of their two star players, and the guy who's killing us, gets knocked out. No miracle in sight, though. Their other star hits a 3, and other dudes step up, putting us down by 11 at the break. The closest we get is to within 8. Code:
The Bison fuck us over again by losing by 9 to Florida A&M. The Rattlers had homecourt advantage though. Like I said, got fucked by the schedule. That means... Code:
SUCH HORSESHIT! MEAC Conference Tournament 1st Round - @ Bethune-Cookman We just beat these guys, so they're spoiling for revenge. Hermann Leitl is fully healthy, so he'll start. We jump out to a 7-0 lead, forcing the Wildcats to an early timeout. They charge back to within 3, but then Edmond Casey and Robert "Fatass" Renfroe hit treys to open us back up to 17-6. 37-26 is our halftime lead, and let's hope we can hold it to salvage something out of this shitstorm season. And of course they start hitting everything and suddenly we can't buy a fucking bucket for all of Bill Gates' money, and they go up 42-40. 54 seconds left. We're down by 2, and they have the ball. 21 seconds left. Traded made shots. And we can't force the missed shot or turnover, so our season ends with a fucking bullshit 2 point loss after being up 11 by halftime. Fucking typical bullshit. Code:
Good news on the recruiting front, however! Code:
This French point guard should be amazing and will challenge Robert "Fatass" Renfroe for the starting job next year. At #316, he's our highest ranked recruit by far! (The other two are in the mid-late 400s). He was the guy I most wanted to land, and it took forever to get him. Hampton won the MEAC tournament and promptly got spanked 51-71 as a 16 seed against Mississippi State. South Carolina State was a 10 seed in the NIT and got wrecked by 7 seed South Dakota 59-79. The MEAC, where even our best teams lose by 20 to everyone else. 1 seed Maryland, 1 seed Kentucky, 3 seed Syracuse, and 4 seed Notre Dame made the Final Four. Maryland beats Syracuse 67-63 in the championship game. No MEAC awards for us. Oh well. Code:
Time to say goodbye to our seniors. Code:
Our best all-around player, and I suspect we'll miss him next season. Responsible for two of our four wins, and the real anchor of this team. Code:
Despite being 6'5, he played all along the frontcourt as our best defensive rebounder, and he had a number of 10+ board games. I'm excited about the freshman we have coming in, but Tony was a baller, and the guy the AI wanted to make our star player. Our leading rebounder. Code:
Accurate as hell despite the low INS rating, and a defensive beast who made a lot of passes out of the post. Between losing him and Eanes, our defense, which already stunk, is going to take a hit next year. And I'm scared for our efficiency with him gone. Code:
Shit ratings aside, I grew to trust him as a swing reserve as the year went on. And of course, who can forget that PotG performance? Senior Synopsis 3 starters Our best player Our best defenders on the perimeter and in the paint Our leading rebounder A key reserve That's a lot to lose.

Code:
Our last recruit, a pickup we pursued in March after missing on the frontcourt guy we really wanted. Smart as hell and great rebounding talent compared to what we had before. Code:
On top of landing the conference's top recruiting class, the AD lets us know we're in for a facilities upgrade next season. That's great news, considering we're in last place with a 2 rating right now. Of course everyone got undrafted. I screwed up in recruiting and didn't offer a scholarship to the one guy I meant to. That probably turned out all right in the end, as we had little shot of landing him. Not that we'll have much chance with the three guys we're heavily pursuing, either.

3 3* recruits. Nice. That is the makings of a championship team in the MEAC.
Next on the list should be a pure shooter.

The four freshmen all got specialized training regimes, while everyone else I left at recommended.
Edmond Casey gets academically suspended Code:
Pretty sure now that INS training also improves rebounding. Point Guards Code:
Still trying to figure out what improves passing, but yeah...he's already a worlds better shooter and defender than Mark Eanes, but obviously nowhere near a floor general, or a ballthief. The dropoff might not be as harsh as I expect. He's also slightly quicker, much stronger, and with a better jumping ability than our prior PG. Naturally the unquestioned starter. Red/Green Code:
He'll continue to be a scrub backup. Shooting Guard #3 SG Scott Blank - Maryland-East Shore - Freshman -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Height: 6-3 Weight: 191 High School: Snow Hill High School Hometown: Snow Hill, MD Attributes: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Type INS JPS FTS 3PS HND PAS ORB DRB PSD PRD STL BLK QKN STR JMP STA -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Current: 27 60 51 76 18 21 11 17 20 26 18 17 68 45 53 53 2015: 27 54 47 70 18 21 11 17 20 24 16 17 66 41 51 27 Potential: D A B B D D F D D C D D Health: Good Scholarship: Yes Status: Active Roster Academics: 45[/code] Yeah, he's turnover-prone. But he made huge strides in his shooting. He's still quite a ways off from Robert "Fatass" Renfroe and Richard Joplin in his jumper, but the beauty of his 3 point shot can not be denied. Probably the starter. Oh, and he's Orange/Green, the only current Orange player on the roster. Code:
Didn't live up to his shooting ratings last year, and I trusted him less and less as the season went on. He'll see fewer appearances this year with Blank's arrival. Funny thing is, he was rated as having our highest Pro Prospect potential his freshman year. This season, he's fallen to #48, just ahead of the German. Our top prospects, by the way? Scott Blank is #7 and Jeremie Agache is #13 in the MEAC. Code:
Great handles, but sucks everywhere else. Code:
Robert "Fatass" Renfroe's shooting got better later in the year, and I do love his handles and perimeter defense, but I think he's best suited as a 6th man combo guard to the two freshmen, especially since Agache can cover for Blank's weaknesses. Small Forwards Code:
Clinched a victory last year with clutch FT shooting. That will probably his best time in a Hawks uniform. Code:
It's too bad he got suspended. I was ready to make him the starting SF this year. Now I have to try and figure that out, unless I'm going to run a three guard set with Agache, Blank, and Fatass. Code:
Plays better than his ratings, which is how he got PT last season.

Power Forwards
Code:
Our tweener. His perimeter defense sucks, but he can steal the ball, so I'm debating whether to make him our starting SF and run a 2-3 zone. AI says to stick with the 3-2, though, so I'm not sure. One of the toughest decisions to make for sure. Code:
If you can believe it, the AI didn't have him doing much work at all on his conditioning. Same thing with Blank and shooting. Obviously I changed that shit real quick. TBH, I love this dude. He put in serious work in camp to make himself our best rebounder without question. I kind of want to slip him into a starting spot, especially with his 3 point shooting and our emphasis on it this year. Code:
Got some time last season. Won't happen again. Code:
A possibility to start at the 3 until Edmond gets back, surprisingly enough. Code:
Stamina issues limited his minutes last year, but he had some very effective games at PF. The AI wants to start him at C, but if he does start, it'll be at PF. Centers Code:
Started during the non-conf games last year - then became a reserve. He'll get his minutes limited more this year, because of other options. The AI wants us to go small with Agache/Joplin/Blank/Doiron/Leitl, and that makes some sense. But after we got crushed on the boards last year, I really want to start England at the 5. Doiron is a much more complete player than Leitl, so I think he's the better choice there. After much hemming and hawing, we'll go with... Starting Lineup PG Jeremie Agache (Fr) SG Scott Blank (Fr) SF Gerald Benson (Sr) PF James Doiron (Fr) C Ronald England (Fr) Yep, all four freshmen are starting. That's how good they are/how sucky we are. Lifetime Recruiting Regions Delaware: 1 France: 1 Maryland: 1 Tennessee: 1 Strats Pace: 3 Motion: 1 3P: 7 Focus: Balanced 3-2 Zone 0 Press 0 Trap 5 Double Inside 7 Double Outside Scott Blank the Featured Player.

You would think. Then again, when I've pulled lots of 3* recruits before, it hasn't meant squat as far as conference championship contention. But then, I always did AI stuff before. This time, I'm using a mix of AI stuff, and then changing it up from there.

We have 3 guys with green potential in our freshman crop. Everyone else in the MEAC pulled at least 1, with Hampton and South Carolina State also having 3 green potential. We'll see how that works out for everyone.
vs #3 Maryland Oh look! The national champions! This is gonna be ugly. Fuck you, AD. Fuck you for giving this first test. We don't score our first point until 12:50 and are down 2-16 following the Robert "Fatass" Renfroe bucket. Opponents sure seem to make a lot of just before half shots against us. We're down 22-49 already to the Terps at the break, and the weirdest thing is that Gerard Benson is leading us in scoring with 8 points. It just goes from bad to worse, and I let the second unit play the last 4 minutes of the game together. Code:
Any positives here? Well, Scott Blank contributing in a lot of different areas. Other than that, this was what you'd expect out of 5 brand new starters, four freshmen and a senior who played not that much last year. There's chemistry issues to sort out, and playing against the defending champions their first game out... this was gonna happen. @ Providence They have 2 blue guys, won 22 games last season, and made it to the third round of the NIT. So the beatdown run continues. Hack A Frenchman may be a thing, because Jeremie Agache misses all 4 of his FTAs in the first 2 minutes, and James Doiron is already sitting on the bench with 2 fouls. This time it only takes until 16:57 to score, and Ronald England's bucket makes it 3-2. Our first lead of the young season comes shortly thereafter, when Scott Blank drops a 3 pointer. Amazingly, we stay ahead or tied until 6:04 in the first half. No standout players really, except for Ronald England grabbing 8 rebounds. Then they can't miss and we can't make, which is a really annoying, common theme, and we're down 19-32 at halftime. Our inability to make free throws is hilarious... if you're not us. Even after finally making some, with 9:30 to go, we're still shooting 41.4% as a team from the charity stripe. Ye gods! Code:
34.8% from the floor, 8.3% from 3 point range, and 48.5% from the charity stripe. Sure hoping these kids get a lot better as they grow and develop. And for the first time in UMES Izuldean history, we have *two* players in double-digit rebounding. And for those wondering, yes, Ronald England broke the single game Hawks boarding record, beating Tony Everette's mark by 1. So there's glimmers of hope in the still painful darkness.

Heh, Robert "Fatass" Renfroe. I love it.
Looks like you've got some potential, at least the game against Providence was somewhat respectable. I'll be finishing up my 1st season at Memphis tonight. Thanks. Yeah I was like "Hmm. A 5'8 guy over 200 lbs. Either he's got a ton of muscle or he's the point guard version of Renardo Sidney. I'm going with the latter."
Hopefully this season goes better than last year, but with five brand new starters, four freshmen, that's going to be damn difficult.

One thing I neglected to mention.. even after a last place finish in the MEAC, our prestige went up from 2 to 3. Yay for even the tiniest of bumps or something.
[b]@ Princeton (1-2)/b] Code:
Somehow, they have a bunch of guys shooting over 50% despite not having great shooting ratings, while as my dudes with great shooting can't do squat. Don't get it at all. The funniest thing is the 19.3 PPG is a Red/Red guy. Their backcourt consists of two Orange/Green freshmen, so a lot of youth on display. Walking the grounds of Princeton always makes me want to cry. Dreamt of applying here out of high school but didn't because I was too scared. Damn, I love this place, and the summer I spent here with the New York Film Academy is one of my best memories. Fuck the AD for scheduling me here. Anyway, on paper, we should be able to hang with them. In practice, everyone performs above their ratings, so we'll get ripped apart. We don't score for the first 4 minutes, until Ronald England of all people nails a 3 to make it a 3-5 deficit. He of course gets his second foul on the next possession. Who needs to make free throws? Nobody on this team, and soon the 2 point deficit is 10. But then our defense kicks in, and we draw back to within 4. And of course, they go on a late half run to put us down 22-30 heading to the locker room. The second half sees us get as close as 5, but no further. At least we were competitive. Code:
What I wouldn't give for some shooters who can actually live up to their fucking ratings. vs Old Dominion (2-1) Last year we lost by 19 to these guys - our first noncon loss of less than 20 points. Obviously we've bettered that already this season, losing by 9 to the Tigers. Code:
Their leading scorer is a chuckerass Yellow/Blue freshman who doesn't live up to his shooting ratings. We're still going to get hammered because they have a Blue and 2 Greens, but maybe we can do better than last year? Gerald Benson hits 3 of his first 4 shots to put us up 9-8 early, but then the SAME FUCKING THING HAPPENS AS LAST YEAR WHERE THEY MAKE ALL THE GOD DAMNED SHOTS THEY WANT AND WE CAN'T MAKE A SINGL ONE. This fucking bullshit means a 28-46 halftime deficit, and I'm about ready to ragequit this bullshit game which has no fucking scoring or draw foul rating visible. Seriously.. they're shooting 62.1% and we're shooting not even fucking 35%. Code:

vs Butler (1-2)
Code:
30 win team and NCAA 2nd round last year? YOU DON'T SAY! At this point, I may have to take over scheduling from the AD. I hate doing that because it's a real pain in the ass, but I'm sick of guaranteeing winless non-con schedule. Oh look, another Izulde IRL story time: One of the colleges I visited was Butler. Nice looking campus, but it didn't feel right. I particularly remember the meh impression (this was high school BTW), because Mom and I were in an elevator with another guy with his mom who was checking out things, and he was like, "I love this place. I really hope I get in here." Never did find out if he got accepted, but good for him. Scott Blank and Jeremie Agache each hit a 3 pointer to have us at 6-4, but then the Bulldogs take over, and I'm just indifferently clicking through while we're shooting 21.4% late in the half. We're losing 16-53 at the break. Can we give up 100? Will we even score 30? Yes to the latter, after Scott Blank drills a 3 for 30, 31, and 32 with 8:49 left. They're up to 82 points, so seems likely. Code:
BULLDOGS FAIL TO SCORE 100! WHOOOOO!!!! Now time to get rejected by all our recruits like when, my final semester of undergrad, I asked out 37 different girls to our Spring formal, and they all turned me down. Then the bus left without me because I didn't hear them leaving, and nobody noticed I wasn't there. I've never gone to any formal dance ever with a girl in my entire life. Can you see why Izulde is a bitter man who curses at text sims for being assfarmers? :P Joseph Scurry, a point guard from Middleton, OH, has rejected your scholarship offer. He decided to attend IPFW, because Mastadons are way cooler than boring ass generic Hawks. Surprisingly, the other two haven't declined yet. Only a matter of time, however.

@ Virginia (4-1)
Blues and greens everywhere! Code:
Total blowout that wasn't even worth commenting on at all. @ Pennsylvania (6-0) Cool. Unbeaten Ivy. Code:
This should end well, and by well, I mean yet another rout. And that's exactly what it is. We score 4 points in the first 10 minutes. At halftime, we're losing 10-33. Ronald England is hurt with 14:30 left in the game. Great. Our only genuinely good rebounder. Code:
Nice game by James Doiron. Maybe he can build on that or something. @ Richmond (3-2) Because beating a 4 greens lineup is totally doable. Ronald England will sit this one out, but be back for the rest of our noncon routs. We keep it under 10 for most of the half, but the time the buzzer sounds, we're down 19. Late in the second half, 5'8 Robert "Fatass" Renfroe blocks somebody. Funniest moment of the year. Five of our players foul out by the end of the game, including 4 starters. I'm sure you can guess what happened after that. Code:
Yeah.

3 Greens. Enough said. I also forget to put Ronald England back in the starting lineup, but rectify it at first opportunity. The Vikings quickly jump out to a double-digit lead, but then most of the rest of the first half is us doing our best to keep the deficit to single digits. But then the usual late half bullshit surge happens, including yet another 3 pointer made at the buzzer by our opponents to put them up 23-40 at the break - their biggest lead of the game by far. Is it me or is this game just not that realistic? The simulation aspect just doesn't seem very good.
For example, your team is averaging about 35 points a game. But then they drop 73. Both seem unrealistic. I'm wondering about your thoughts on the game. Are you happy with the game? Or is the play not up to standards in terms of realism?

The low PPG has to do with the slow pace and our crappy shooters. The Richmond game I suspect was an outlier as I'd have to check, but I think we shot better that one, and I believe the Spiders run a faster pace.
I'm fine with it realism-wise, actually, though I do think we should be playing teams closer in most of our blowout losses this season, as our overall talent level is better than it was last year. Things should get a lot better in the MEAC season - the AD just gave us a brutal non-con schedule relative to our talent level, same as last year. I suspect my being a 0/0/0/0 coach may have something to do with it as well, though I'm not sure how the Offense and Defense coach ratings work.

I believe the off/def rate impact training camp results, but also help you become proficient in your defense(s). From all the hours I spent playing this game, I'm pretty sure that the higher your off and def ratings are the better your team plays.
Also, I've found that calling timeouts during opposing runs helps a lot too. HR has said in the jumbo FBCB thread that there is a momentum factor in the engine that calling a timeout can stop or limit. |

vs #17 Pittsburgh (6-1)
Because we're totally going to beat a Top 25 team. Imagine my shock when we jump out to an 11-2 lead with Scott Blank on fire for 8 points. But then their talent kicks in and a beyond midcourt shot falls in at the halftime buzzer for a 29-42 halftime deficit, robbing us of an even 10 points behind. In the second half, we can't shoot, can't rebound, and keep turning the ball over. So it's the same old story. Code:
@Ohio (6-5) The Bobcats have a senior averaging 15.5 points who's the tits. We'll try to shut him down and give ourselves a shot at winning. The first half is a tense, see-saw affair that ends in the Bobcats up by 1 point (27-28). Scott Blank and Jeremie Agache have combined for 22 points, and we've held their star player to just 2 points. This despite James Doiron sitting early with foul trouble. James Doiron fouls out quickly, but the nail-biting scorelines continue, until with under 2 minutes left, they drill a 3 point shot to put them up 44-38. Scott Blank misses his last two 3 point attempts, forcing us to suffer a close loss against a team we could have beaten. Code:
Leonard Deutsch is the sexy senior, and Jeremie Agache and Robert Renfroe did a phenomenal job on him. Was just short, however. vs North Carolina A&T (2-8) Code:
Their top two scorers are also their all-freshman backcourt, as we officially start MEAC play in a very winnable game. How do our non-conf stats stack up? Code:
Pretty similar. Scott Blank picks up 2 quick fouls, and it isn't long after that Jeremie Agache has 2 of his own. We're shooting just 20%, and they're at 60%. Yet, we're still only down by 7. Scott Blank hits a couple 3 pointers, and Robert Renfroe adds 5 of his own points to tie us up at 20 with 2:30 left in the half. When Hermann Leitl gets his first bucket of the game to give us a lead, they call a timeout. And for the umpteenth game, they score at the buzzer to go by 3 going into the locker room. Getting really sick of this shit, and I suspect an engine flaw. They just flat out steamroll us in the second half, and I'm thinking fuck this game. Code:
One of our scholarship offers is rejected in favor of conference foe Morgan State, which really chaps my ass, but we get a recruit, finally. Code:
This is the guy I wanted most, and I was scared shitless Seton Hall was going to throw him an offer and steal him away, but we got him to sign on the dotted line. Should be a huge upgrade to our perimeter defense, and with his inside shooting and size, he projects to instantly plug in the starting SF hole. Oh, and Edmond Casey's dumb ass is finally off academic suspension, so we can start him now.

@ Howard (1-11, 0-0)
Code:
Their star player is their leading scorer, freshman Brian Ruff, who is Orange/Green. We're going to put the clamps on him and dare the rest of the team to beat us. And of course we start off shooting 16.7% to their 53.3% and are swiftly down by 12. We're down 12-22 at the half. Fuck this game. Code:
We shot 15% for the game. 15 fucking percent. 15 MOTHERFUCKING PERCENT!!!!!! @ Morgan State (9-4, 1-0) The jagholes who stole a recruit from us. We'll lose by 100, so what's even the point of posting stats? For once they don't score at halftime, but it doesn't matter, as we're down 16-30. Code:
32.4% shooting. I don't remember the last time this team shot 40%. We're not going to win a single game this year, essentially.

@ Florida A&M (3-12, 1-1)
Code:
They went heavy on the juco route. Miracle of miracles, we build up a 21-14 lead, and are actually hitting shots for once in our lives. And we actually get a 40-32 halftime lead on 8, 10, and 9 points from Edmond Casey, Richard Joplin, and Jeremie Agache. And of course we don't score for another 6 minutes, blowing our lead. Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. Then, with 33 seconds left, Robert Renfroe sinks a jumper to put us up by 3. They miss on the other end, and Jeremie Agache picks up his 6th rebound of the night and makes 1 of the 2 free throws to make it a 4 point game. Thankfully, that's just enough because of course they hit a 3 pointer right at the buzzer. Code:
Jeremie Agache got robbed here. But we'll take the victory. vs Coppin State (8-8, 3-0) We have no shot, put it that way. 4 possessions, 4 straight turnovers. 7-0 lead for Coppin State, and this is pretty much all you need to know. Oh, and both Ronald England and James Doiron pick up 2 early fouls. For once, we're the ones with a buzzer beating point pickup, as Jeremie Agache is fouled, makes the shot, and hits the FT to cut our halftime deficit to 5 points. And it's over 4 minutes before we score again, continuing a common theme. Code:
21 turnovers. Yeah. @ Hampton (7-8, 3-0 Sure is nice to draw undefeated teams back to back after our win. Little question that we'll lose - just by how much is the question. A 4 point technical by Edmond Casey wipes out our fragile lead early in the first, and from there it's a romp. Code:

vs Delaware State (7-10, 4-1)
Code:
So I'm looking at this roster and I'm thinking... how the fuck are these guys 4-1 in conference, let alone have 7 overall wins? They look as bad as us. I'll find out I'm sure. We build up to a 7 point lead, but by halftime, we're ahead by a single point, 22-21. Both teams are shooting under 27%. This is just some seriously awful basketball being played out there. Cue us once motherfucking again not scoring for 5 minutes, and going down by 5 as a result. Once again, that's a wrap. Code:
Oh, and Robert Renfroe is out 26 days. @ #18 Michigan State (15-4) Fuck the AD. I'm just going to sim this. We lose 45-68. vs Morgan State (13-6, 5-2 Seriously? CAN WE FUCKING PLAY SOME FELLOW SHITTY TEAMS, PLEASE? Code:
Edmond Casey is out for a week with injury. No recruit news because we didn't offer anyone. Code:
Familiar territory is familiar.

@ Coppin State (12-9, 7-1)
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!?! ANOTHER FUCKING TOP FUCKING MEAC SCHOOL?! Code:
Don't let the final score fool you... they slacked off late to let us get halfass close. Our third injury of the year sees Delmer Toole out 21 days, meaning we have no worthy backup behind our French frosh. FML. FTG. vs Florida A&M (4-18, 2-7) Code:
They're still pissed about the 1 point loss on their turf earlier in the year, and the Rattlers are ready to come out striking. At first, it's a close battle, but then we stretch out a 10 point lead that by half is cut to 33-27. We've had halftime advantages before and seen them blow up, so I'm not optimistic here. They keep making charges, and we hit just enough of our shots that we're up by 4 with 1:19 left and have the ball. I put in my best free throw lineup. Jeremie Agache sinks 2, and they travel on the other end after missing a shot and getting the offensive board. Edmond Casey makes 1 of 2, but that puts us up by 7 and should seal the victory. Code:
A lot of big time shots by Scott Blank, and he's shown flashes throughout his first year of becoming a legitimate #1 scoring option. We also sweep somebody for the first time in my career. Big win that moves us out of last place (for the time being).

Don't let the record fool you... sure, they lost to Florida A&M at home, but their other 3 defeats were on the road, and they're currently on a 4 game winning streak. They'll slay us, no doubt. We're down by 5 at the half, because they're shooting 65% from the floor. At least we're competitive? Storm back to very briefly have a 1 point lead, but then they get it back, and we can't make another rally after Scott Blank and Edmond Casey both foul out. Code:
vs Howard 10-14 (8-3) So the Bison have shocked everyone by being a top team in the MEAC this year. Sure wish we could do that, instead of once again being in last place. We build up an 8 point lead twice, and actually lose the fucking thing. But by halftime, we've managed to fight our way back to a slim jim 31-28 lead. Every fucking starter but Blank get 4 fouls early, and we lose the lead, build it back up to 5, lose it again, and inch it back up to 4 before putting the 4 foul guys back in. 4:01 left. Howard calls a timeout. We're up by 8. James Doiron fouls out immediately after. They make both free throws. Misses on both ends, and Scott Blank hits a dagger 3 pointer with 2:46 left to make it a 9 point game, then 11 after they miss and Blank nails a 2 point shot. By the time Ronald England fouls out, it's a 62-47 game with under a minute to go and we've got this. Code:
Another great game by Scott Blank in crunch time, and we're again off last place ...barely.

@ Evansville (5-20)
Code:
Andrew Cash, their star freshman PG (#3 scorer, #1 assists) is out with injury, and another one of their starters is at 84%, so we have a real chance at my first nonconf win and equaling our four wins from last season. Until we miss our first 11 shots and are down 2-13. We start getting back, but of course they score right at the buzzer and we're down 25-34 when the whistle blows. The lead gets down to 1 at one point, but then we can't shoot and they hit enough shots to obliterate us by game end. Code:
vs Norfolk State (4-21, 3-10) Code:
The math here is very simple. Beat these guys, and we're pretty safe to stay out of last place. Lose, and we're a lock to finish in the bottom yet again. Things start off the worst possible way for us, as Ronald England and Jeremie Agache each get 2 fouls before 2 minutes is gone. They open up a 5 point lead, but by the end of the half, we've reversed course and are up 5 ourselves, thanks to Edmond Casey and Jeremie Agache each scoring 9 points. Norfolk State keeps making it a one possession game in the second half, but then somebody on our side steps up with a shot. With 1:44 left, we're up by 5 points and they go into fouling mode. Edmond Casey misses, and they get a bucket on the other end. 1:38 left, 3 point lead. Jeremie Agache scores. 5 point lead, 1:22 left. They miss, James Doiron grabs the rebound and is fouled. He hits both. 7 point lead, 1:10 left. Norfolk nails the 3 pointer. 4 point lead, with 1:09 remaining. Edmond Casey is fouled. He makes the front end, misses the back, and with a 5 point deficit, they get the rebound, and miss the 3 pointer. Edward Yarber grabs the board. Their starting PF, who has 10 points, fouls out. Edward Yarber makes 1 of 2 to make it a 6 point lead with 51 seconds left. 3 point try... miss and grab offensive board. 3 point try... miss and grab offensive board. 3 point try... miss and Richard Joplin finally ends the nonsense with 22 seconds on the clock. He's fouled and makes both free throws to put this game away. Code:
Sure it's not the 32 point game he had last year, but Edmond Casey set career highs in steals and blocks, and carried us to the win. And that's really important, because here's our remaining schedule: UMES @ North Carolina A&T @ Delaware State vs Hampton Bethune-Cookman @ Florida A&M @ Morgan State vs Howard Norfolk State @ Hampton vs South Carolina State @ Delaware State Bethune-Cookman is tied with us at 4 wins, whereas Norfolk State has 2. The SCS game should be a win for the Spartans, so they would need to pick up another win elsewhere and have us lose all three (which is probably going to happen). Shows how important it was for us to beat them here.

@ North Carolina A&T (13-13, 9-5
Code:
They beat us by 13 at our court, and though my scouts hate on them, they're in second place in the conference. It's a harrowing, claw-scratching first half. Neither team is really hitting their shots, and we're still within range, down by 1 at the half. If we can pull off this upset, that would be incredible. Scott Blank gets his 4th foul early, but then Richard Joplin catches fire, scoring at will to put us up by 8. What follows is a continuation of the most beautiful basketball we've ever played in my UMES career. We're absolutely crushing somebody on the boards for the first time ever, and we're hitting all the shots. Code:
They cut the lead to single digits late in the second half, but man... that second half though. We were up by as much as 15 at one point. 44.7% from the floor, 46.2% from 3 point range. Just fucking beautiful. Losing us to also guarantees that NCA&T can't catch Hampton in the standings. OH, GUESS WHAT GUYZ?! THIS IS ALSO OUR FIRST WIN STREAK IN HAWKS HISTORY UNDER ME!!!! Norfolk State lost, which means we won't finish last in the MEAC!!! As an added bonus, Bethune-Cookman went down, too, but I'm not going to be greedy. @ Delaware State (10-17, 7-7) Code:
Remember when the Hornets were 5-1 in conference play after beating us? Their roster has been somewhat exposed since this, more in line with what I thought they were. Can we pull off two road win upsets in a row? I'm not betting on it. 2 quick fouls a piece for Ronald England and Edmond Casey. They hit all the 3 point shots they want, so we're down by 20 at the half, and this is one is over pretty early. Code:
Scott Blank quietly continues his late-season shooting surge, giving hope for future seasons. The 3* foreign PG we were chasing dropped us off the radar, and our backup plan there committed elsewhere, so we're down to chasing 1* players who might work out for us. vs Hampton (15-13, 11-4) Sadface because the Pirates need to win to guarantee the conference title, due to Coppin State's charge up the standings. We'll get hammered, but if Bethune-Cookman loses, we'll actually finish third from the bottom. Norfolk State made our upset win immaterial after losing to S.C. State, by the way. They dominate us most of the first half, but we kick on towards the end to narrow the gap to 5 by the time we go into the locker room. At least we're playing the class of the conference competitively. Hampton again puts on the gas on, and we just can't do anything about it. Code:
And that's a wrap for the regular season. How'd we do? Code:
We will for damned sure take that! Buys me some more time, anyway. MEAC Conference Tournament: (9) @ (8) Florida A&M Code:
The Rattlers are missing their #2 leading scorer, Robin Harris, due to injury. They're also spoiling for revenge at our sweeping them in the regular season. Third time in a season blah blah. Ronald England and Scott Blank sit early with 2 fouls, and they keep getting 3 point opportunities off those fouls. Bitchass refs are definitely favoring the Rattlers because we're in the penalty with 13 minutes left to go yet in the half. And despite that zebra bias, we grind out a 27-26 halftime lead. But the second half sees the ref bias continue, and our unable to make a single fucking shot due to getting blocked everywhere. Code:
Pretty damned disgusted right now. Code:
Was hoping his inside shot would be better, but he's another 7 footer. Brings some post defense, and gives us a shotblocker for the first time, considering our highest rated player right now has 37. And although he hasn't committed yet, I'm pretty sure we're going to land this next guy as late one, so I'll post his card anyway: Code:
Solid all around potentials, and I think he could end up a real sleeper in our program. Ball thieves are something else we like, as James Doiron's 53 is our only one above 30. Maryland gets back to the NCAA final, but loses to Kentucky 67-58. Morgan State upset Hampton in the tournament final, then got squashed as 16 seed by Oklahoma. As for Hampton? 10 seed in the NIT where Utah State destroyed them by 47 points. We're again shut out of the MEAC awards, though Bethune-Cookman freshman Marshall Blakeney was MEAC Freshman of the Year and made the All-MEAC 2nd Team. Definitely a kid to keep an eye on in the future.
