Antmeister -
For this group I used Paint.NET as you suggested, and set them to 300 DPI before drawing them. However, after I saved them and then reopened in them in Paint.NET, they were back at 96 DPI. If I open them in Irfanview, they're 120 DPI. Any thoughts? |

This is okay. A number of programs default to a certain dpi when viewing images. When you enter 300 dpi and enter the height and width, it increases the size of the canvas. Just remember that for every inch, the pixel size increases by the number you specify as the DPI (which in this case is 300). So if you are shooting for an image on a T-shirt (which is 10" X 10"), the pixel size on the screen should be 3000 x 3000 pixels (which is really 30" X 30" if viewed at 100 dpi). This is so that you can retain the quality when it shrinks it from that large size. To check if it is at a larger size, go under the view menu and select "Ruler". Then go under the View menu and select Units (pick Inches). If everything was done correctly, you should see that your image is much larger. If you don't want to eyeball it and want exact measurements, go under the Image menu and select "Canvas Size". This will show you the exact height and width. If everything is looking okay in this sense you are fine. In Paint (since it is at 96 dpi), it will read 31.25 inches. In Infranview (which has a higher viewing dpi of 120), it will read 25 inches. I hope I made sense. What I am basically saying that if you image is more than 25 inches in both programs, it is going to be sufficient to print. Last edited by Antmeister : 12-09-2005 at 01:43 AM. |

Dola,
By the way, I like the added color that you used with Paint. You seemed to have picked up the program fast. Good job! |

Antmeister - Thanks for the explanations. They make sense! I hadn't thought of putting the cartoons on a T-Shirt (mostly mugs, calendars and an eventual book), but I see how I'd need to re-create them on a larger canvas at the higher DPI rate to do it, which is fine.
Paint.NET seems good. It took a little bit to get used to, but I think it'll work out good when I get used to it. The one thing I miss from regular Paint is that when you're adding text, you can easily do white text on a black background. There appears to be nothing similar in Paint.NET, which is why the text (not the quotes, but the regular text) is a bit different this time around. Of course, it's still stick figures. |
