Good weekend for shows.

Affliction shows their undercard starting at 7pm on HDNet, then the main show at 9 Saturday night.

Sunday is the WEC live show with Faber - Pulver II.

I may get to see the show Saturday, but will certainly see the WEC fights.

Channel surfing the other day I happened across a trailer for the Affliction card on Bravo2 over here: would never have known otherwise as I never watch that channel. Nice stroke of luck, beers are in the fridge and looking forward to it.

Yeah, the Affliction show is a PPV. I think it's 45. Anyway, we are still debating on getting it or not. I would love to see the main event, but the undercard seems a little weak.

I'll be watching the Affliction card. I'm a sucker for Fedor fights, especially when it's not against a freakshow. There's really very little else on the card of interest, but it's MMA and we have a decent sized group so it only costs me a couple bucks to watch it.

I always like to watch Barnett fight, and there's the added excitement of whether Yvel will get disqualified or not. Lindland vs. Belfort will be a good time to grab a snack or a power nap I imagine. The Little Nog vs. Matyushenko fight could actually be a pretty interesting one as well, and I think that one is headlining the TV portion of the event.

Now the UFC card next week I'm extremely excited for basically ever fight on that card. It's great top to bottom.

I've just realised it's on Sunday on Bravo2 over here. Oops!

Have to avoid this thread for 24 hours: still can't argue for free.

One of the best overall PPV's I've seen. A lot of that may be because the fighters I like all won and in pretty impressive fashion, but I really enjoyed most of the matches tonight (which isn't usually something I'd say with how many went to decision).

Jones, Machida and GSP though, daaaaaaaaaamn.

Damn, GSP embarassed BJ. Not at all what I was expecting. Jones also looked really good - with how young he is he could develop into a real force. Nice card overall, even with so many going to decision.

It appears to no longer be a spoiler, yes GSP won the fight on Saturday, but alas it appears the battle is not over. The Nevada State Athletic Commission is investigating the the GSP-Penn II fight and while unlikely, it is not out of the realm of possibility the result could be over-turned and ruled a no contest.

BJ Penn complained to the commission either after the first or second round that he could not control GSP on the ground. And not in a he's more skilled than me and I can't control kind of way. He was implying that GSP was greasing himself before the fight and between rounds.

To make matters worse for GSP this came after the athletic commission was tipped off that the GSP corner was applying the vaseline that was meant for his face to his his entire torso. This prompted the commission rep to actively take a part in the GSP corner and for GSP to be wiped down between the 2-3 round break and the 3-4 round break by the commission.

The camera didn't really catch any of this other than Phil Nurse putting vaseline on GSP's face and before wiping his hands off rubbing the neck, back, chest, and upper arms of GSP. This in itself is a violation and against the rules of the NSAC. Nothing says this really changed the outcome of the fight, but BJ is world class in his ground submissions and he said during the fight that something wasn't right to the commission rep. The current rumor is that it was Chuck Liddell, who was sitting ringside, that first informed the rep that something was not right in the GSP corner.

Sucks if GSP and his corner were doing something illegal. Hate to see any of the titles tainted like that.

That being said, I don't care if he was dunked in grease before the fight. That wasn't the deciding factor. BJ was being manhandled in the standup as well. It gives him a chance to save some face for being embarrassed like that. Luckily he's got something with at least some inkling of truth to grasp to.

No way it gets overturned. At worst one of the corner man is banned from cornering, but I doubt that even happens. Everyone will be keeping a close eye on it from now on though, for sure.

I remember the rubdown being talked about and said, "wow there awfully touchy feely in that camp." and I also saw Penn's legs sliding right off of GSP's shoulder on every attempt to wrap his legs around GSP's torso. I think it definitely had an effect on the fight.

I agree no way the NSAC is going to over turn it, however with that being said there is precident in MMA that if you grease and win it gets overturned. I'm not aware of this type of incident ever occuring under the jurisdiction of the NSAC though. In Japan where there is no sanctioning body other than the promotions, this has always been seen as a disgrace and has resulted in wins being turned into no contests in the past.

I think the bigger question is if this turns out to be legit has Team Jackson been doing this in other fights? If you remember there have been several fighters in the past come out and say that members of Team Jackson were 'greased up' in their fight.

Just some recent examples:

2005 Diego vs Diaz

Diaz was close on several submissions but could never quite get the grip needed to finish the fight. Diego would go on to the win the fight. After the fight Diaz said that Sanchez was, and I quote, "greased up."

2007 Evans vs. Ortiz

A fight ruled a draw, after the fight Ortiz said Evans had vaseline on his legs.

Matt Hughes has also came out and said that GSP was greased up during his fights with him. Here is a quote from Hughes:

Quote:
Now, on to what everybody is talking about, the greasing. I'm not the only one who has said that GSP felt greasy during a fight. I know Matt Serra has mentioned it and, even in their first fight, I think B.J. said something. I'm not saying GSP did something wrong and I'm not saying that it would have changed any outcomes of any fights; but what I am saying is, for my last two fights against Georges, he felt greasy."

Now most of this will never be able to be proven and may not be true, but in every case here all the accused fighters are from Jackson's Submission Fighting. I'm very interested in seeing where this goes.

Against what? There is very little to take a stance on. His cornerman rubbed vaseline on his face and then gave him a little rubdown. Firstly, there was hardly any vaseline on his hands. Secondly, the guy from the NSAC rubbed it off with a towel. BJ and his crew are just crying because he got smashed. GSP's corner may have been sloppy with their methods but no way was there cheating involved.

imo, and my opinion could be completely biased considering I live a couple streets away from BJ and know him personally. anyway I don't think greasing or not would of changed the outcome of the fight, BJ was dominated and GSP looked like a beast the whole fight. BJ definitely did not look like the BJ we have seen recently either, but he got beat by a better fighter. BJ is still one of best fighters pound for pound I've seen in a long time, but not on GSP's level.

GSP said he'd be glad to give him an rematch immediately.

I'm thinking BJ is not in a rush to take him up on that.

I like BJ, but he needs to stick to 155. He hasn't exactly stormed through the welterweight division. Then again I'm of the belief someone should have to earn a title shot also, and I don't consider losing your last two fights at the weight class, and not even defending your title once to be earning it.

Stay at 155, destroy Florian..and go from there.

Oh yeah I like Florian, and I would love to see him beat Penn, but I just don't see an in-shape and motivated Penn losing to Florian. Now if Penn goes off the deep end after this loss maybe it'll happen.

Just not sure how Florian could beat him.

I just rewatched GSP's camp in between 1-2 and 3-4. It's most evident in between 1 and 2. The corner man takes what appears to be a very small amount of vaseline and applies it to GSP's cheeks, nose, and eyebrows. Then a brief chest, shoulder, and back rub. Not being a vaseline expert (figure I better throw that out there) it's my guess that the majority of the vaseline was applied correctly to the face.

In between rounds 2 and 3, the corner man immediately greets GSP after the end of the round with a jar of vaseline in his hand. If I were intentionally breaking the rules, I would feel a heck of a lot more self-conscious about overtly displaying the method of cheat.

Ultimately, I am not at all impressed by BJ Penn's complaint, however, I was impressed by the GSP domination/beatdown of BJ Penn and would love to see if BJ could do better. GSP is just unreal right now and from what I've seen of GSP, I don't see anyway he would accept going through all this training just to have a vaseline incident destroy all he's worked for. No way.

But anyway, here's hoping for GSP/BJP III. But I have to agree that BJ Penn is most dominating at 155 and that's where he should stay and dominate.

Kind big news this week...

EliteXc is finally sold, with Strikeforce taking over and grabbing 42 or so contracts with them.

Karo Parisyan fails a drug test for painkillers.

And not really UFC news but still kind important, according to this link:

Decent show with good fights tonight. Highlight of the night?

Mike Goldberg might have the cheesiest fake smile in showbiz, but he is one of few Americans to pronounce towns like Nottingham and Birmingham nearly correctly (Nottingum and Birmingum - he went with Nottinghum which is close enough!).

Kudos to you Mike, and your bizarrely white teeth, for making the effort.

Kind of makes my purchase of WMMA2 last night a little more interesting. I wonder what sort of reaction it would have gotten if Adam had programmed a inverted triangle choke as a finisher

I also want to add, that for anyone who is interested in where the UFC and MMA in the US in general has come from, yahoo! sports mma section has been recapping one UFC event per day until, as they count down to UFC 100. It has been one of the things that I have been looking forward too each day. They are on #41 right now, and you can find it here:

you know what Im most happy to see in that clip is how fast the ref was BUT also that the attacker in the fight recognized that the guy was out and pulled some of his punches and didnt take advantage to slaughter the guy. I have seen that far too much in the last couple of PPV's and events Ive seen. Outside of the one fight where the ref refused to stop it eventhough the guy was out, multiple times, Ive seen fighters just crushing guys that were out of it while the refs are either late OR the refs are pulling on them to stop. I think Dana ought to do something about it like he did with Sobral.

You know it's easier to let it go and apologize later, then to call it early and be mired in the controversy. From the ref's point of view.

How are you liking it so far Jon? I couldn't get into the first WMMA at all and this one I can't stop playing, totally addicting!

We have a local kid (Senior in HS) who just fought this weekend and is on purefight.org.
He has over 120 amateur fights. He was a very good wrestler (I think 4th in state). And has won 4 national titles in kickboxing. He subdued the guy he fought in 41 seconds and missed a killer roundhouse kick by inches.
His goal is to go on the reality show and he could be a UFC fighter one day.
