It is. And while I don't really care one way or another about the name, changing history to suit someone's agenda is something that does concern me. But this is the new New World.

Saw something about Arkansas State owning Red Wolves and suing a Tennessee soccer team for using the name. If AR State plays it right, maybe Daniel Snyder pays for their Covid financial losses.

Revolutionaries is my favorite.

But that is probably controversial

Foreskins because of all the dick heads in congress would be a good one.

The Washington Gridlock. They'd field some incredible defenses. Ain't nothin' getting through their Moscow Mitch defense.

Given how the Nats were rolled out, not expecting anything bold here. When was the last interesting name change not in the baseball minors? I will the G-League has some fun nicknames, though.

Yeah, but the only image anyone associates with the hogs is a bunch of guys dressed up as beefy women, which I'm sure would offend someone.

Also would get awkward when some fans start talking about "Beat the pigs", meaning the team and the cops .

Hogs was part of an online poll from I think a local news station and it only had like 4% or something. It was the 80s and I don't know that anyone who isn't old really cares.

There are plenty of race-neutral nicknames to choose from that would identify with D.C.

Mugwumps, Tricksters, Gerrymanderers, Mudslingers, Gridlockers, Fighting Bureaucrats, Obstructionists. The list is endless.

Mugwumps, high jumps, low slumps, big bumps

(As an aside, why is the federal government always painted as being the worst with this? Local government is often just as bad if not worse. It's not like the fed can do any gerrymandering, for example.)

I think it's because just about everyone on this board has a common federal government to gripe about, and many of us pay attention to it and are knowledgeable about it. Everyone hears about Trump's latest tweet. But who here knows anything about (or cares for) local Toledo politics? It makes having a discussion harder about local stuff.

I enjoy that in all this controversy, they're not going to be able to get around to this for a while. Whatever season we have, if any, is coming up. And they're going to be slapping a shitty team name last-second on everything.

...this is basically what the CFL team in Baltimore did for a season (or two?) when they coveted the name "Colts" but were blocked by the NFL. It was...hmm..non-awful? They eventually went with Stallions. It was fun in the stands when the cheer squad did their "Gimme an S! ... Gimme a T!..." and the stands basically unanimously shouted out the letter for COLTS and it was drunkely awesome. #seasonticketholder

They are going to go for a year with these very cool uniforms and this minimalist name/logo that's already really grown on me.

And they will throw it all away when they announce whatever their garish and horrible new name/color scheme/logo/uniforms are going to be.

Joke is still probably on me though b/c I am leaning heavily toward giving Dan Snyder a bit of my money and buying some Washington Football Team merch.

I was all set to say they should just go full soccer-style and become "Washington F.C." and use the city seal repurposed in team colors as a crest in place of a logo...only to discover via Google that there's actually a "Washington F.C." in the Northern League, Division 2 in England.

I'm sure Snyder could buy them off to use the name, but I'm also sure he's too much of a skinflint to want to bother.

Perhaps the Washington Insurrectionists would work. Logo could be a crowd beating a cop with a stick.

Yeah, even after reading that article in its entirety the hypothetical question posed in the headline still seems more valid than any supposed explanation contained in the meat of the article.

Semi-related, Canada's racist football team finally changed their name to the Edmonton Elks this week.

Like the new logo but I think the new name is awful, only because of the fact that Elk is still the plural of Elk. I would have been fine with the Edmonton Elk. The way it currently is equates to calling a team the Bisons or the Mooses or anything similar.

FWIW, I was a Centerville Elk. Although we were called the Elks when you talked about the team.

I thought it was a dumb name. I was happier as a Fairport Red Raider.
