Trying to rebuild: The 2015(+) Cleveland Browns (FOF 7)

(Note: I've tried twice to do a dynasty thread, and both times I've had computer problems and I've had to delete before too long. I thought it was the game's fault but I think it was my computer. I re-installed the game on another computer, and after a dry season run I think that solved the problem. Thanks for your patience)

I chose the Cleveland Browns because I just feel so sorry for them. Back in the day, they had legends like Jim Brown, Lou Groza, Leroy Kelly, Gene Hickerson, and Mike McCormack kept them relevant and interesting. In the 10-year stretch between 1946 and 1955, they won 7 championships and were the runners-up in the remaining 3 years. Ever since the merger and the start of the Superbowl era however, things have kind of taken a dark turn. At the end of 2014, they still hadn't won a superbowl. In fact, they haven't even appeared in a Superbowl.

To add insult to injury, in the middle of the 1995 season, owner Art Modell announced that the Browns would be leaving Cleveland to become the Baltimore Ravens. Fans did not take it well (duh). After their final home game, fans removed seats and threw them onto the field. Fires were started in the stands. Stadium security and police officers were assaulted in the melee. Their head coach, Bill Belichick was immediately fired after the move (poor guy, I hope he landed on his feet...)

In 1999, Cleveland finally got a team again, along with the "official history" of the pre-Baltimore franchise. Great news right? Well not so much. From 1999 to 2014, the new Browns put up a horrendous .328 winning percentage, only made the playoffs once (and lost in the first round to the Steelers), and finished in last place 12 of those 16 years. In the 2014 draft, they did draft an interesting, talented quarterback that they hoped would help re-re-re-rebuild their struggling franchise. Too bad it was Johnny Manziel. This poor team just can't catch a break.

So it's all up to me to bring happiness to Browns fans and give them the dynasty they've been waiting for.

PRESEASON ROSTER:
(Overall Rating / Potential Rating if applicable)
(Italics = Rookie)

QB #13 Josh McCown (41)
QB #7 Austin Davis (29/40)
QB #2 Johnny "I refuse to call him Johnny Football" Manziel (26)
QB #9 Connor Shaw (15/45)

McCown is the front-runner for starting QB at this point, though Austin Davis might be within striking distance, depending on how things go. Manziel is...ugh. Whatever. Shaw is Manziel insurance should he prove himself too disappointing to hang onto.

RB #34 Isaiah Crowell (35)
FB #42 Malcolm Johnson (34)
RB #41 Glenn Winston (25)
FB #20 Gabriel Petelle (22/48)
RB #29 Duke Johnson (18/20)

Probably going to be Crowell at running back and Malcolm Johnson at fullback. I'm really interested to see if Petelle lives up to his potential. The game started with 59 men on my roster, and since I'm allowed 60 for the preseason, I chose Petelle as my one signing.

TE #81 Jim Dray (35/49)
TE #82 Gary Barnidge (33)
TE #86 Randall Telfer (21/42)
TE #88 E.J. Bibbs (13/23)

Dray and Barnidge are pretty much locks right now. Telfer has a really decent shot at making the roster too. As for Bibbs...ehh he might not make it.

WR #12 Josh Gordon (43/53)
WR #11 Travis Benjamin (39/36)
WR #80 Dwayne Bowe (35)
WR #16 Andrew Hawkins (33/42)
WR #83 Brian Hartline (32)
WR #15 Marlon Moore (26/32)
WR #18 Gabriel Taylor (19)

In this universe, Josh Gordon has decided to stop constantly testing positive for weed and and is actually taking his job seriously. My depth here is pretty decent, but a large part of it depends on if any of my QBs can do a good job for me. I guess we'll have to see how that goes.

LT #73 Joe Thomas (83)
C #55 Alex Mack (68)
RT #72 Mitchell Schwartz (63/79)
LG #75 Joel Bitonio (54/61)
RG #77 John Greco (49)
RT #67 Austin Pasztor (28/37)
LG #74 Cameron Erving (23/40)
RT #61 Michael Bowie (20/23)
LT #64 Darrian Miller (10)

Thomas and Schwartz at tackle, Bitonio and Greco at guard, with Mack in the center. I'm pretty happy about who I've got for me at offensive line, this looks like one of my few truly bright spots.

RDE #94 Randy Starks (62)
LDE #92 Desmond Bryant (55)
NT #71 Danny Shelton (54/70)
LDE #96 Xavier Cooper (26/43)
NT #98 Jamie Medler (26/40)
LDE #54 Scott Solomon (26/30)
RDE #93 John Hughes (6/10)

Solid starters here, I'm real interested to see if Cooper and Medler turn out to be good. If they tank...well I've got some serious problems with my depth then.

SILB #56 Carlos Dansby (65)
SOLB #51 Barkevious Mingo (50/59)
WOLB #95 Armonty Bryant (43/49)
SOLB #99 Paul Kruger (38)
WOLB #44 Nate Orchard (30/42)
WILB #53 Craig Robertson (24/31)
SILB #59 Tank Carder (23/31)
WILB #58 Chris Kirksey (11/19)

Again, solid enough starters. And again, a lot of this is going to depend on how rookie Nate Orchard pans out. I'm cautiously optimistic about these guys.

LCB #23 Joe Haden (79)
FS #39 Tashaun Gipson (55)
RCB #21 Justin Gilbert (54)
RCB #22 Tramon Williams (51)
SS #31 Donte Whitner (45)
LCB #26 Pierre Desir (38/46)
SS #33 Jordan Poyer (27/36)
FS #24 Johnson Bademosi (21/35)
RCB #36 K'Waun Williams (18/36)
RCB #25 Ifo Ekpre-Olomu (18/28)
LCB #43 Charles Gaines (13/31)
FS #30 Ibraheim Campbell (12/22)
LCB #40 De'Ante Saunders (11/25)

Bit crowded here. I've got 13 guys here, and since I have to make 7 cuts before the regular season begins I'll most likely be letting a handful of these guys go. And hey, how 'bout Joe Haden, huh? My scouts absolutely love the guy, and he was a pro-bowler last year.

P #8 Andy Lee (71)
LS #47 Charley Hughlett (51)
K #6 Travis Coons (33/44)

Real good punter, but a couple of untested (but decent) rookies at Long Snapper and kicker. Not gonna be messing with these guys unless something drastic happens.

As far as clubhouse drama goes, here are the "leaders" for each position group (the guys that bring everyone together):
BACKFIELD: RB Isaiah Crowell
RECEIVERS: WR Brian Hartline
OFFENSIVE LINE: C Alex Mack
DEFENSIVE FRONT: RDE Randy Starks
SECONDARY: FS Tashaun Gipson

Mack, along with LT Joe Thomas and TE Gary Barnidge are the three "mentors" on the roster. Ifo Ekpre-Olomu is the only "red flag" on my roster. His leadership, intelligence, and personality ratings are abysmal...he's the type of guy who gets busted for another DUI and fans just go "Wow another incident?! This is ridiculous!" (No offense to the real-life Ifo Ekpre-Olomu...take it up with the game creators )

Other drama/gossip:
- QB Austin Davis, WR Brian Hartline, and C Alex Mack all get along together very well. That might give Davis a bit of an advantage in the QB battle, but let's see how the preseason goes first.
- C Alex Mack is pretty popular apparently. RG John Greco and him are also good buddies.
- WILB Chris Kirksey and RDE Randy Starks get along very well
- Though it looks like Starks and NT Danny Shelton seem to be BFFs. Starks is my best defensive lineman, and has 11 years of NFL experience under his belt. Looks to me like a classic mentor/protege relationship between him and the rookie Shelton.
- Trouble in my backfield though...looks like Crowell and FB Malcolm Johnson don't really get along. They both have very high leadership ratings...perhaps Johnson feels like Crowell is dominating the "leader" role?

GAME 1

Washington Redskins 10 @ Cleveland Browns 19

STATS HIGHLIGHTS:

PASSING:
Connor Shaw (15/22, 166 Yds, 1 TD, 1 INT, 86.5 Rate)
Johnny Manziel (6/8, 37 Yds, 83.8 Rate)

RUSHING:
RB Glenn Winston (64 Yds, 2.67 Y/A)
RB Isaiah Crowell (26 Yds, 3.71 Y/A)

RECEIVING:
WR Dwayne Bowe (58 Yds, 19.33 Y/R)
RB Isaiah Crowell (56 Yds, 11.20 Y/R)
WR Brian Hartline (12 Yds, 1 TD)

DEFENSE:
OLB Barkevious Mingo (1.0 Sacks)
CB Tramon Williams (1 INT, 1 PD)
CB Justin Gilbert (1 INT)

BLOCKING:
LG Cameron Erving (4 RunBlk/Opportunities)

DE Xavier Cooper is out for a couple weeks with a sprained knee, and LS Charley Hughlett separated his shoulder, out for 6 weeks. Which means I have to sign a new long snapper. To take his place, I've signed #50 Kent Holzberger, undrafted out of Virginia Tech. It's a 1-year, $450,000 contract so nothing to earth-shattering. His LS rating is 74, so this might be kind of a blessing in disguise for me.

Now that means that I have 61 players on my roster and I need to cut one. I've chosen to release LT Darrian Miller, he of the 9 overall rating. My scouts aren't optimistic at all about him, and I've got enough good starters on my O-Line that this move doesn't really hurt me.

No new injuries to report. After the game, I decided to sign an interesting free agent: LG #78 Branden Calico. His overall rating is only 22, but my scouts think his potential could be as high as 62! I have an overflow at secondary, so I released CB De'Ante Saunders (9/12). No big loss there.

Well that's quite the punch to the gut. Ugly, ugly game in stormy, rainy, ultra-slippery conditions. McCown was just awful, we had FOUR dropped passes (two by Bowe). Manziel replaced McCown in the 4th quarter, and actually did a pretty decent job. Given the awful playing conditions at the start of the game, I'm not ready to bench McCown just yet though.

As for the defense...well Ryan Fitzpatrick didn't seem to mind the rain; he got 263 yards, 2 touchdowns and was named the game MVP. RB Chris Ivory chipped away at us all day. Brandon Marshall had an insane day: 10 targets, 10 catches, 150 yards, 2 touchdowns. Just...wow.

Lee punted all right I guess, and Coons made both of his XPs so uhhh that's good right?

Yuck.

Next week we host the Tennessee Titans for the Cleveland home opener.
