And I agree that a LOT of what attracted people to Wordle is the simplicity. As soon as you have to start creating a NYT account, people are going to meh out.

One think that they could do is leave it pretty much unchanged except for mild ads/links to their other puzzles. But I don't think that they spent low seven figures for that.

Low seven figures for the New York Times is not much money. They probably spend that much on advertising per week. They might get their money's worth if all they do is put a link to their other games, on their website, to drive traffic there, which I would think would work better than a week's worth of banner ads and TV/radio commercials.

Just looked it up. In 2020, according to .Statista, NYT spent $135.9 million on advertising. Just slap a link to their other games on there and it's some of best advertising they can do. Of course, do any more than that, and they'll kill the game and throw their money away.

Found out today hard mode is actually easier than easy mode - on my 4th guess I typed in a word that didn’t include one of the yellows (managed to miss the fact I had 2 yellows!), and it refused to accept the entry…

In easy mode that would have counted as a fail, and I would have been on my 5th guess
