Anyone been to Canada lately?

Planning on going to Canada tomorrow but can't seem to find my birth certificate. Is this gonna be a problem? We will be entering Canada through Detroit. I have never had a problem getting back into the US, but it seems getting into Canada is always an adventure and I'm thinking w/o a birth certificate will be even harder. Anyone been there lately and what forms of ID did they ask for? Thanks....

I think you need a passport or proof of citizenship...you may be able to get through, but coming back may be harder...I would check the Canadian website...

I have been to canada a number of times, and I cannot remember needing anything to go back and forth. Certainly, you do not need a passport though. Although it is always a much bigger pain in the ass to come back than to go. And I have not been there since 9-11 so things may have changed.

The American border guards think we are all potential terrorists. I don't think you will have problems at Canadian customs.

Coming back into the USof A your own guys maybe making a close inspection of your rectal cavity for bomb making materials.

I remember when my sister and I flew back to Canada as teenagers - I was probably 16, she was 14.

it took us FOREVER to get through customs - they were all suspicious of these 2 teenage hoodlum americans.

my sister was quite the gum chewer back then, and she had an annoying habit of chewing a piece of gum, then wrapping it back up in the wrapper and putting it in her purse. she probably had 30-40 little wads of wrigley chewing gum, rolled up in the little foil wrapper.

Canadian customs officials opened EVERY SINGLE ONE.

I've traveled back and forth between both the Canadian(by vehicle) and Mexican borders(by foot and cruise ship) and never been asked more than "Are you an American citizen?". No ID, nothing.

I once asked some of my hispanic coworkers if they had ever had any trouble at the border(Mexican, being less than an hour from it) and they said it was a hassle every time.

that's all well and good, but I don't think I'd take a trip to a foreign country and NOT have my ID.

to answer the original question, driver's license should be fine.

Me and a group of rowdy college students will be crossing the border into Manitoba early saturday morning for our spring break trip to Winnipeg, (yeah most people go south but Canada seems like a cheaper alternative with an 18 year old drinking age) and I contacted customs and they told me to have an original copy of a birth certificate and a photo ID. Granted I've crossed into Ontario via International Falls, Minnesota five times before and never was asked for a birth certificate but each time I was with my father with a fishing boat behind. This time I will be in a car full of college students. So this time I am making sure to bring my birth certificate.
