Week 2 - UTEP (0-0) @ Texas Tech (0-0) (-5)
Final: Texas Tech 20, UTEP 14 Games like these are tough to stomach. Our boys gave it everything they had, only to come up a little bit short. Defensively, we were stopping everything they were throwing at us and we went into halftime leading by a score of 7-3. Ofcourse, just like throughout the years, our defense couldn't put together a complete game and allowed the Red Raiders to score 14 unanswered points to eventually put us away. I was pleased with our overall effort today. We didn't do much offensively, but Texas Tech has a very solid defense. Week 3 - Louisiana-Lafayette (0-1) @ UTEP (0-1) (-4) Final: UTEP 24, Louisiana-Lafayette 17 We almost shot ourselves in the foot in this one. I'm starting to become concerned with our offense now as we haven't broke 300 total yards in the first two games. Red shirt senior Joseph Dawson has been impressive behind center as he's made some smart decisions, but his strengths come from playing small ball. I wouldn't trust him to throw 20+ passes, which really makes our passing game predictable at times. True freshman running back Broderick Lyles had his coming out party with 28 carries for 125 yards. |

Week 4 - Akron (0-1) @ UTEP (1-1) (-7)
Final: UTEP 35, Akron 6 This year's Akron team reminds me a lot of UTEP's 2005 team. Really bad. With that being said, this wasn't much of a game. I'm glad our guys got up and played against an inferior team. Nothing gives a coach more of a headache than let downs against less talented opponents. Some key players from today's game: QB Dawson - 17/27, 228 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT RB Lyles - 33 carries, 180 yards, 2 TD TE Harvey - 8 catches, 87 yards, 2 TD OLB Owens - 7 tackles, 2 sacks Week 6 - Louisiana Tech (1-2) @ UTEP (2-1) (-15) Final: UTEP 28, Louisiana Tech 21 The game plan was pretty simple: run it down their throats. We accomplished that as you can see from the time of possession stat: UTEP - 41:18 Louisiana Tech - 18:42 QB Dawson threw 3 picks which really helped La Tech stay in the game. Other than that, we were dominant throughout the game. Our defense is most definitely the game MVP. While our quarterback was trying to give this one away, our defense wasn't having any part of that. Hats off to these guys leading the defense: S Tucker - 6 tackles, 1 INT ILB Schwartz - 5 tackles, 1 assist, 1 INT |

Week 8 - Tulsa (2-4) @ UTEP (4-1) (-21) Final: UTEP 27, Tulsa 24 Tulsa surprised me today. The run that dreaded wishbone attack. The same formation that certain WAC teams have run in the past that have killed my UTEP teams over the years. They came out and were ready to attack in the first half - leading us 24-10 going into halftime. I absolutely laid into my guys at the half. I think they got the message because we scored 17 unanswered and Tulsa never scored again. We're going into the "heart" of the WAC the rest of the way with games against Boise State, Rice, SMU, San Jose State and Hawaii coming up. Here's a look at the current WAC standings: Code:

Week 9 - UTEP (5-1) @ #25 Boise State (4-2) (-7)
Final: Boise 41, UTEP 14 The Boise curse continues. If today taught us anything, it's that we're still not a top tier WAC team quite yet. Week 10 - Rice (3-4) @ UTEP (5-2) (-16) UTEP 26, Rice 23 (OT) Well, atleast the Rice curse is broken as we get our first win against them in my tenure here at UTEP. Rice is a really tricky team. In the first game of the season, SCE team Galveston, a team that's in the lower tier of the country, traveled to Rice and upset them 23-17. A few weeks later, Rice heads into Austin, TX to face the #11 Longhorns and they knock them off by a score of 14-11. Rice is a bipolar team, to say the least and I wasn't sure what to expect. They're another team that runs out of the wishbone formation, which added to my uncertainty. To my surprise, neither team really got anything going offensively all day. Both D's were tough and this was definitely a defensive battle. Fortunately, our defense proved to be tougher at the end as we made them settle for a field goal in overtime. Our offensive takes the field and we just give it to true freshman RB Lyles to turn it up the field to win the game. |

2008 SEASON REVIEW
A lot of highs and lows this season. Just when I think we've turned a corner, somebody drills us back to Earth. It's disheartening, but I think we've done some really great things here the past four seasons. UTEP is no longer in the WAC cellar and my staff and I have managed to recruit some great players so far. Ofcourse, I still can't help but think we're still a middle-of-the-road WAC team as of right now, though. I have many high expectations going into the 2099 season as I'm hoping we can finally breakthrough to the top tier of the conference. Time will tell. 2008 END OF SEASON GRADES Code:

Week 2 - UTEP (0-0) @ Texas Tech (0-0) (-15)
Final: UTEP 22, Texas Tech 10 In front of a sold out crowd in Lubbock, Texas and on regional television, we shock the college football world by upsetting the Red Raiders. Texas Tech had no answer for Broderick Lyles (131 yards, 1 TD) and our running game (200 total yards). We controlled the time of possession, which was absolutely key. We committed 3 turnovers (2 INT's, 1 fumble) and the Red Raiders helped us out with their starting QB throwing 4 INT's. Our defense was brilliant today, allowing Texas Tech to only 241 yards of total offense. This is a win our program will remember for a long time. Week 3 - Beaumont (0-0) @ UTEP (1-0) (-5) Final: UTEP 35, Beaumont 31 It took a fourth quarter comeback for us to knock off in-state school Beaumont. They're one of the tougher SCE teams and I always like playing state competition. They have one hell of a team. Actually, they were much better than I was expecting. They run their offense out of the veer formation. Our defense over the years has been notorious for not being able to stop the option. Today we did an alright job as we held them to just 152 yards on the ground. Offensively, here's some key performances: QB Stevens - 15/25, 203 yards, 3 TD RB Lyles - 23 carries, 111 yards, 2 TD WR Casares - 4 receptions, 71 yards, 1 TD This win didn't come without a few losses. Our best DE will be out the rest of the year and another starting DE will miss 5 weeks of action: Kim Haworth - 48 weeks (degenerative hip condition) Bubba Thomas - 5 weeks (hyperextended knee) |

Week 4 - McAllen (1-1) @ UTEP (2-0) (-4)
Final: UTEP 38. McAllen 10 McAllen was never in this game. We win this one easily. The injury bug continues to strike as we lose starting flanker Casares for 9 weeks with arthroscopic knee surgery. Code:
Week 5 - Louisiana Tech (1-2) @ UTEP (3-0) (-11) Final: UTEP 34, Louisiana Tech 3 The score may indicate that we had a good day offensively, but La Tech's offensive was generous enough to allow our defense to score 14 of those 34 points on the day. Our defense was the game MVP as we shut them out both on the ground and through the air. The Bulldogs only managed a measly 2.7 yards per play. Injuries continue to kill us as we lose starting fullback Thurman Clark for the season due to a torn knee ligament. With the injury, I've taken the redshirt off freshman Rick Holliman. We travel to Fresno to take on the Fresno State Bulldogs (0-3) next week. Don't let their record fool you. They're one of the better teams in the WAC. They've just had a brutal OOC schedule so far as they've faced #7 Texas A&M, #23 Ohio State and unranked Oregon State. Last edited by Recoil : 02-01-2010 at 07:24 PM. |

Week 6 - UTEP (4-0) @ Fresno State (0-3) (-5)
Final: Fresno State 35, UTEP 31 This one was closer than I expected. Fresno, with their tough OOC schedule, is one of the better WAC teams even with their 0-3 record coming into today's game. This was also the first time this season that a defense has held Broderick Lyles to under 100 yards rushing. Defensively, we had no answer. They over-powered us on the line and ran it down our throats. Code:

Sources: UTEP's Harrison Daniels headed to Florida State? January 13, 2009 After the dismissal of head football coach Damon Giannetti, Florida State athletic director Randy Spetman has reportedly approached UTEP coach Harrison Daniels, sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com on Tuesday. On December 27, Florida State fired Damon Giannetti after compiling an unimpressive 6-27 record over the past three seasons at FSU. A source familiar with the situation told ESPN.com that "Mr. Daniels has always been the #1 choice since the firing of Giannetti." The source also stated that "Coach Daniels is eager to return to the southeast after the past six years in El Paso." UTEP officials have declined to comment on the situation. Harrison Daniels, if he chooses to remain at UTEP, will be in the final year of his contract. |

Daniels turns down Seminole coaching job January 16, 2009 El Paso -- More money and a chance to coach in a BCS conference apparently wasn't enough to convince UTEP head coach Harrison Daniels to leave the UTEP Miners. Daniels, who recently completed his sixth season as head coach of the Miners, met with Florida State officials Thursday night and turned down an offer to become the next Seminoles head coach Friday morning. UTEP athletic director Bob Stull refused to speak specifically about the Florida State job but said he was thrilled to have Daniels as his head football coach. "I really don't comment on any specific jobs but from time to time people are going to come after Harrison and he has done a wonderful job turning the football program around here at UTEP," he said. "I'm really happy and excited he is our coach. I'm hopeful that we can sign him to another long-term deal in the near future. That's one of my top priorities." 2009 SEASON REVIEW
To fall from 4-0 to 4-5 was quite disheartening. As I said previously, we had a winning season, but it certainly doesn't feel like it. The Nevada game really took the wind out of our sails and we never really bounced back from that tough loss. I could blame it on the excessive amount of injuries we had on the defensive side of the ball, but that's not me. Great coaching wouldn't have allowed such a letdown during the second half of the season. My staff and I will have a lot to improve on during the off-season if we ever want to take UTEP to a level higher than just a middle-of-the-pack WAC team. 2009 END OF SEASON GRADES Code:

Week 2 - Killeen (0-0) @ UTEP (0-0) (-7)
Final: Killeen 41, UTEP 24 Well, you're not going to win many games when you commit 5 turnovers. This one is a real head-scratcher. We were dominant in the first half and I'm not sure what team came out after halftime. This was the worst case scenario for the start of the new season. Hopefully this game isn't a preview of what's to come. Week 3 - Texas Tech (0-1) @ UTEP (0-1) (-5) Final: UTEP 24, Texas Tech 17 It wasn't pretty, but a win is a win and more importantly, saves us from being 0-2 to start the season. This is the second year in a row we've beaten a stronger Texas Tech team. I wish we could go back and play that Killeen game again. A few things of concern after 2 games: - Offensively, we're not converting as well as I'd like on 3rd down. Way too many three and outs. - Defensively, where to begin? It seems like teams are having no trouble moving the ball against us. Code:

Week 5 - Boise State (1-1) (-15) @ UTEP (1-1)
Final: Boise State 62, UTEP 0 Coming off a close loss at South Carolina, the Broncos came in and hammered us at home. Adding insult to injury - we lose starting left tackle Nolan Lincoln for the rest of the year due to a severe hamstring pull. Really no use talking about this one, right? 62-0. That's pretty much all you need to know. Week 6 - UTEP (1-2) @ Fresno State (3-1) (-33) Fresno State 44, UTEP 24 33 point underdog? Really? Well, you wouldn't guess by the final, but we were winning heading into the fourth quarter by a touchdown. The Bulldogs scored 27 points in the fourth to come back and take this one. After the game, I informed defensive coordinator Terrell Collons that considerable improvement needs to be made by the end of the season if he'd like to keep his job here in El Paso. Code:

Week 7 - SMU (0-4) @ UTEP (1-3) (-5)
Final: UTEP 35, SMU 7 This game went about as expected. SMU isn't a very good team, but I'm glad we took care of business. We're only a few loses away from heading into the direction of a losing season. Good news: - RB Lyles got back in nice form today with 29 carries for 203 yards with 2 TD. He's been struggling in the earlier part of the year. I'm hoping he can regain the ability he's showed the past two years. - Starting QB Stevens only threw 2 picks today. I'm not sure what's wrong with the kid, but he isn't playing as well as he did last season for us. He's at 9 INT's already and he only threw 10 all of last season. Bad news: - Defense continues to give me many headaches. SMU only had 7 points, but due to their weak offense, they gave the ball back to us on some key drives. - Injuries. DT McCrory done for the season (severe hamstring pull). Starting OLB Willie Owens is also done for the year due to a dislocated knee. Owens was All-WAC 1st Team in 2009. He'll be missed. Week 8 - San Jose State (1-4) @ UTEP (2-3) (-5) Final: UTEP 30, San Jose State 0 They had no answer for our running attack, so we ran it down their throats all day with Lyles leading the way. The game was relatively close (13-0) heading into the fourth, but our offense exploded for 17 unanswered points to put this one out of reach for the Spartans. Starting split end Steven Casaras will miss the remainder of the season due to, ummm, tobacco withdrawal syndrome. He'll spend the next 21 weeks in a rehabilitation center. Now that we've got back to .500, we get to head on the road the next three games of the year against Rice, Nevada and Tulsa. Tulsa, sitting at 3-3 currently, is the surprise team of the WAC this season. |

Week 9 - UTEP (3-3) @ Rice (4-2) (-10)
Final: Rice 13, UTEP 10 A defensive battle? This is my seventh year at UTEP and I've rarely seen games of this nature. Hats off to Rice's defensive for holding Lyles to 32 yards on 28 carries (that's a 1.1 YPC average, if you're paying attention). QB Randy Stevens continues to make me pull my hair out. He was 17/40 for 306 yards on the day with 3 picks and 1 TD. I have no idea what to do with him. We really don't have a better choice at the moment. We'll take next week off and then head to Nevada in week 11. Week 10 - UTEP (3-4) (-6) @ Nevada (0-7) Final: UTEP 59, Nevada 24 Injuries hurt. Adding to our list: QB Stevens - dislocated elbow (season) C Mahoney - broken ribs (season) OT Pace - torn knee cartilage (season) The first two were starters. I'm not sure how we'll fare the rest of the way with these key injuries. |

Terrell Collons out as UTEP's defensive coordinator January 7, 2011 El Paso -- UTEP's defensive coordinator Terrell Collons will not return for the 2011 season, Miner head coach Harrison Daniels said today. “Terrell is a good football coach and an even better man,” Daniels said. “But after talking to him earlier this week, we both agreed that it was time for a change.” The move comes as somewhat of a surprise, but Daniels hinted earlier in the season that he would take action to improve the defense. "The players have to be accountable, as well as the coaches. " Daniels said. "Coach Collons was a valuable asset on the coaching staff in his three years here at the university, but sometimes a change of pace is necessary. I wish him nothing but the best." |

UTEP: Harrison Daniels contract extension and 2 players suspended for 2011 season January 11, 2011 El Paso -- The Miners have awarded coach Harrison Daniels a contract extension that runs through the 2014 season, according to a pair of reports. "I'm very excited about it," Daniels said to the Times. "Athletic director Bob Stull has always been very good to me. I respect him a great deal. I'm glad he's got the confidence in me to finish what we started when I came here to El Paso. We've got an amazing opportunity to have something real special in the future." Daniels has led the Miners to four straight winning seasons with a total combined record of 40-37. In other related UTEP news, two players have been suspended for the 2011 season. Two year starting fullback Rick Holliman has been suspended for violating team rules, according to head coach Daniels. Starting cornerback Sammie Snyder has also been suspended for the season. This past weekend, security cameras captured Sammie stealing books from the campus bookstore. He has been charged with misdemeanor theft. "It's been awhile since I've had to deal with problems outside of the football field. I'm never happy about dealing with situations such as these. These are two smart young men who made some careless mistakes. It's unfortunate for the football team and the university that these incidents have occurred." |

2010 SEASON REVIEW
Three straight 6-5 seasons. I'm happy to have a winning record, but I'd like to see more progress made. Injuries for the past two years have been brutal. I'm not one to make excuses, but they've really decimated our defense and the ability to stop average to above average offenses. Even so, I've seen our talent grow ten-fold since I took over UTEP in 2004. Athletic directors across the country continue to call each off-season. I'm not interested in making a lateral move, so I'm here in El Paso for the time being. 2010 END OF SEASON GRADES Code:

Week 2 - North Texas (0-0) @ UTEP (0-0) (-7)
Final: North Texas 30, UTEP 13 Not the way you typically want to start a season. Just a really careless game from our offense. QB Stevens had two picks and then backup Wolf came in and throw one of his own. So the quarterback situation from last year looks to be continuing. If Stevens can't provide the offense with some stability and leadership, I'll be forced to look in a different direction. Hopefully he can turn things around. North Texas was pretty balanced offensively, as most pro-formation teams are. If Stevens doesn't throw two INTs for touchdowns, this is a much closer ballgame. The good news is that we had minimal injuries on the day as only QB Stevens left the game with a bruised shoulder. Week 3 - Texas Tech (2-0) (-8) @ UTEP (0-1) Final: UTEP 44, Texas Tech 10 We took the Red Raiders behind the woodshed today. I think this makes 3 years in a row against them. Quite impressive. Stevens threw two more picks today, but he was a little more accurate as he went 19/31 for 249 yards and 2 TD's. I have faith that he can get his shit together. RB Lyles ran wild on the Texas Tech defense going for 130 yards on 21 carries. Code:

Week 5 - Louisiana Tech (0-3) @ UTEP (1-1) (-16)
Final: UTEP 28, Louisiana Tech 9 QB Stevens has lost the starting job. I can't understand how someone's strengths that includes "avoiding interceptions" can throw so many picks. It's mind numbing. We'll see what Pete Wolf can do as he'll get the nod next week against #15 Rice. Due to the interceptions, this game was closer than it should have been. Louisiana Tech just isn't very good. Game ball goes to RB Lyles as he has another great game (25 carries, 170 yards, 2 TD). Code:
Week 6 - #15 Rice (3-0) (-10) @ UTEP (2-1) Final: Rice 17, UTEP 10 Our defense kept us in the game all day. We just couldn't do anything offensively (199 total yards). It's a shame. I really wanted this one. Pete Wolf wasn't terrible in his first game starting at quarterback. His stats on the day: 15/28, 109 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT. We'll see if we've found a permanent QB next Saturday when SMU comes to town. |
