Murphy Garners CL Batter of the Month Award

Geoffrey Murphy is not used to being associated with Batter of the Month-caliber players, but today the Baltimore right fielder joined that select company when the Continental League announced the results of April's voting.

Murphy totaled 26 hits, 7 walks, 8 home runs, 23 RBIs and 13 runs scored last month to put together a .371 batting average and .450 on-base percentage.


Atlanta's Rodríguez Top RL Batter in April

Aurelio Rodríguez received the Republic League Batter of the Month trophy earlier today for his efforts at the plate this last month.

"He might be getting older," Atlanta's manager told reporters, "But he's been around long enough to know what it takes to put a stretch such as this together... and he doesn't keep that to himself. He's always talking to the younger guys in the clubhouse helping 'em any way they'll let him. Aurelio's value to our team goes farther than the numbers he puts up on the field."

To win the honor Rodríguez put up a .330 batting average, 8 home runs, 21 RBIs and scored 19 times in April.

CL Picks April's Top Pitcher

Michel Peters's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 6-0 in April, the 33-year-old Napa Valley hurler has been named Continental League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 40 in 44 innings, logged an ERA of 0.82 and allowed opponents to hit .204 against him.


Bevan Is April's Top Starter

As Bill Bevan hoisted up the Republic League Pitcher of the Month trophy for April, rumors have already begun to swirl about whether he will leave Atlanta once his contract is up at the end of the season.

Bevan put pressure on the Indians to keep him around by posting a 5-0 record and an ERA of 2.47 over 43.2 innings last month. He also rolled up 20 strikeouts, increasing his value both to Atlanta and to every other team in the league.

CL Selects Rookie Star of the Month

Youngster Gary Tessier emerged as the latest Continental League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Napa Valley deserved the honor, batting .410 with 2 home runs and 8 RBI. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Tessier enjoy the limelight.

Romain Lavoie of the Atlanta Indians has been voted the top Rookie in the Republic League.

In April he collected 22 hits, 6 home runs, 22 RBIs and 14 runs scored. He batted .278 with a .322 OBP.

Carlos Guerrero Named Best CL Batter in May

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 34-year-old Carlos Guerrero put together a solid offensive month for Napa Valley and was crowned May's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .287 with 10 home runs, 28 RBIs and 23 runs scored.



Guerrero is presently batting .246 with 14 home runs, 35 runs scored and 40 RBIs. His OBP is .303.


Colorado 's Draper Snags May Batting Title

Brad Draper was declared the Republic League Batter of the Month today. Colorado 's center fielder stroked 39 hits in 110 at-bats for a .355 average in May.

He also hit 11 home runs, drove in 33 and scored 16 runs.

This season Draper has delivered 72 hits in 216 at-bats for a .333 average with 19 home runs. He is getting on base at a .401 clip and his totals also include 54 RBIs and 31 runs scored. This year Draper has played in 55 games.

Millers Ávila May's Top Hurler

Veteran Jorge Ávila put together quite a successful stretch in May for the Noblesville Millers, earning himself the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

Ávila racked up a 4-0 record in 6 starts, posting a 1.34 ERA over 40.1 innings and striking out 29.

In 11 starts this season Ávila has fashioned a 5-3 record and a 3.21 ERA.


Winged Lingerines Starter Wins RL Pitching Award

Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Will Fulton still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 30-year-old starter for Ann Arbor was named Republic League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 5 wins and 1 loss with 17 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 2.64 ERA in 44.1 innings of work.

Looking at his season stats, Fulton has won 8 and lost 1, collecting 39 strikeouts and 15 walks in 82.1 innings with a 2.30 ERA.

A veritable toddler to the Continental League, Santiago Pérez just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for May.

Over the past month the 25-year-old center fielder for Napa Valley hit .301 with 37 hits, 5 home runs and 24 RBI. He also logged 6 walks and compiled a .338 on-base percentage.

This year Pérez has collected a .274 batting average to date with 64 hits in 234 at-bats, 32 RBIs, 7 home runs and scored 38 times. He has played in 56 games.


May's Premier Rookie Named by RL

Ricardo Rodríguez's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Ann Arbor left fielder has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In May he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .284 with 1 double, 1 triple and 5 home runs. Rodríguez also scored 10 times and drove in 15 runs.

Rodríguez is hitting .255 for the season with 6 home runs, 21 RBIs and 22 runs scored. He has 40 hits in 157 at-bats and played in 46 games.

Pérez Cops CL Batter of the Month Honors

Santiago Pérez of the Napa Valley Winemakers swung a mean bat for the last 30 days and was acclaimed the Continental League Batter of the Month for June.

The 25-year-old center fielder slapped out a .327 batting average, 8 home runs, 20 RBIs, 18 runs scored and a .381 on-base percentage.

Pérez is currently batting .290 with 15 home runs and 52 RBIs.


Atlanta's Rodríguez Bags RL Batting Award

Aurelio Rodríguez is in the final year of his contract with Atlanta and today added a timely piece of hardware to his trophy case. Playing in 28 games in June the 34-year-old left fielder ripped Republic League pitchers for a .322 batting average, nabbing him the Batter of the Month award.

He also rang up 8 home runs, 37 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

If Rodríguez keeps up this pace, he'll cost someone a lot of money.

This season Rodríguez is batting .331 with 22 home runs. His totals include 75 RBIs and 49 runs scored.

Chávez Takes CL Top Starter Trophy

The Continental League made it official today -- Bartolo Chávez of the Napa Valley Winemakers is the Pitcher of the Month. In June he impressed the sportswriters with his domination of league hitters.

Chávez made 7 starts, registered 7 wins and no losses with a solid 1.07 ERA. In 42 innings he allowed 30 hits, racked up 36 strikeouts, walked 6 and permitted teams to hit .197 against him.

In 20 starts this season Chávez has compiled a 13-2 record and a 1.91 ERA.


RL's #1 Starter is Tremblay

There's no doubt that Catfish starter Noah Tremblay earned his Republic League Pitcher of the Month award. He left absolutely no room for doubt as he mowed his way through the opposition in June.

During the month Tremblay was 5-1 with a 2.09 ERA. He made 6 starts, tossed 43 innings and had 28 strikeouts.

This year Tremblay has recorded a 12-3 mark. In 17 starts he has fanned 87 batters in 110.1 innings with a 2.77 ERA.

CL Names Rookie Star of the Month

Santiago Pérez is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In June the Napa Valley hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .327 average with 35 hits, 8 home runs and 20 RBIs.

Thus far this season Pérez is hitting .290 with 15 home runs, 52 RBIs and 56 runs scored. He has 99 hits in 341 at-bats and has played in 83 games.


Top Republic League Newcomer Named

Pedro López earned June's Rookie of the Month honors in the Republic League for last month's performance. The boyish Ann Arbor third baseman might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

López hit .274 with 5 home runs, 13 RBIs and 9 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

López is hitting .258 this year with 9 home runs and 32 RBIs. He also has an OBP of .292, 9 walks and scored 29 times.

Alexander of Noblesville CL Batter of the Month

On the heels of a very productive July, Kenny Alexander received Continental League Batter of the Month recognition today.

The battle-tested left fielder hit .368 for the Noblesville Millers and racked up 5 home runs, 14 RBIs and 14 runs scored.

In his 2202 season totals, Alexander has 16 home runs, .317 BA, .389 OBP, 48 RBIs and 60 runs scored.


Moreno Takes Best Bat Award in July

Tokyo right fielder Lúcio Moreno was certainly bad news for pitchers in the month of July. He wore them out going 33 for 92 and was rewarded with the Republic League Batter of the Month award.

He hit .359 with 9 home runs, 24 RBIs and scored 24 runs.

For the year Moreno is batting .296 with 23 home runs, 82 RBIs and 68 runs scored.

CL's Best Starter is Ávila

The Continental League scribes have selected July's Pitcher of the Month and have awarded the honor to Jorge Ávila of Noblesville. He was outstanding on the hill last month and has the numbers to prove it -- a 4-0 record.

The Millers star performer made 5 starts with a 1.37 ERA and surrendered 27 hits in 39.1 innings. He struck out 27 and walked 15.

Currently Ávila has a 9-6 won-lost record in 21 starts with a 3.57 ERA. He also has 97 strikeouts in 128.2 innings.


Venegas Selected RL's Best Pitcher

In July Hammersmith starter, David Venegas really put the strong arm on the other Republic League teams and hauled in the Pitcher of the Month trophy. He did it with an impressive 4 wins and no losses.

In 4 starts and 31.1 innings of work, Venegas limited opposing batters to 21 base hits and a .179 batting average. He fanned 23, issued 1 walks and had a 1.44 ERA.

To date this season, Venegas has registered 18 starts, 11-5 won-lost mark, 2.50 ERA, 129.2 IP, 90 strikeouts and 23 walks. Opposing teams have hit .242 against him.

CL Names Rookie of the Month

Aniceto Bree made a name for himself in the Continental League in July. The talented second baseman for Leduc compiled a .347 batting average and was the top votegetter for the Rookie of the Month trophy.

He won it by going 35-101 in 26 games with 1 home run, 6 RBIs and 11 runs scored.

To date, Bree has collected 135 hits for a .319 average. He has posted 1 home run, scored 55 runs and driven in 29 runs.


July's Premier RL Rookie Named

When it came to hitting the baseball, Romain Lavoie had few peers in the Republic League last month. The gifted right fielder for Atlanta tagged opposing pitchers for a .294 average and was voted the Rookie of the Month for July.

Included in his stats were 20 hits, 2 homers, 13 runs scored and 7 RBIs.

Lavoie is presently batting .261 with 16 home runs, 47 runs scored and 51 RBIs. His OBP is .322.

When guys like Noblesville's Kenny Alexander win Batter of the Month awards, it just makes you feel good. In a productive August, the longtime Continental League veteran toyed with opposing pitchers all month long, collecting 42 hits in 113 at-bats.

The veteran left fielder hit for a .372 batting average and collected 6 home runs, 17 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

This season Alexander is swinging the bat at a .329 rate with 174 hits in 529 at-bats. To date he has hit 22 home runs, scored 80 runs and driven in 65.


Long Top Hitter in RL in August

Free agent-to-be Chris Long has inflated his asking price over the past 30 days by winning the Republic League Batter of the Month.

In August, the 36-year-old Toronto center fielder hit .395 with 7 home runs and 17 RBIs.

If he keeps putting numbers like that up, he could be hauling in a big wad of cash at this time next year.

So far this season Long has put up a .261 batting average with 103 hits, 22 home runs and 73 RBIs.

Napa Valley Starter Named CL's Best Pitcher

There was nobody finer on the mound in August and Michel Peters cruised to the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award today.

He was 5-2 with a 1.47 ERA while piling up 21 strikeouts in 43 innings and holding opposing hitters to a .184 batting average.

This year Peters has gone 17-7 with an ERA of 1.97 and has 139 strikeouts in 196 innings.


Rivas August's Best Hurler in RL

Manuel Rivas left little doubt in the minds of Republic League officials that he should be named August's Pitcher of the Month for his outstanding performance.

"I wasn't always confident at the start of a game," said Rivas. "Sometimes it's hard to get into the flow -- the calls aren't going your way or you're trying to spot your pitches too much. You just have to relax and use what you've been taught all your life -- get back to basics -- good mechanics, control, location, keep the ball down."

The 28-year-old tossed 38.1 innings of quality baseball -- going 4-0 with a 1.64 ERA and 18 strikeouts.

In 27 starts this year Rivas has recorded a 15-8 record and a 2.68 ERA.

CL Announces Rookie of the Month

Aniceto Bree was voted the Continental League Rookie of the Month award for his standout play in August.

The 22-year-old Leduc second baseman batted .350, hit 1 home run and drove in 9 runs. He also tagged 36 hits, scored 10 runs and picked up 7 walks for a .407 on-base percentage.

Presently Bree is batting .325 with 171 hits and 2 home runs. He has knocked in 38 runs and scored 65 times.

Pedro López of the Ann Arbor Winged Lingerines went on a month-long hitting streak against Republic League pitching and hauled in the Rookie of the Month award for August.

He batted .358 and collected 34 hits, 7 home runs, 20 RBIs and scored 19 runs.
