Any group that has shown a preponderance of violence and incites violence should be "monitored & controlled", no question.

But there is a grey area IMO. Let's take Congresswoman Greene as a use case. Do you believe this is appropriate?

The company's policy was updated after the recent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol — a deadly event during which Greene and others were seen not wearing face masks in a secure room where a crowd of people were sheltering.

I think social media companies can do a better job at communicating their rules and be more consistent in enforcing those rules, but, in general, we should acknowledge that most of the time the uneven enforcement comes from being too lenient not too strict. Green has gotten away with breaking the written rules for months and now finally has been told enough is enough.

It's not so different from the arguments that I had with people in the FB group that I started for our HOA. The argument was, that the Board owned the group (technically I did, I could have killed it anytime, as the founder, and sole moderator for a long time), and therefore the Board could choose what to allow, by setting rules, and enforcing them. If the rule says don't be a dick, and you act like one, and you get suspended, there's no issue there at all.

They cried and whined that it's censorship, and the same people said, their voice wasn't being heard, and I countered that there is nothing in the documents regarding the legality of their 'right' to have a voice in the FB group, or it pertaining to the legal communication requirements on how to petition the Board, or be heard within the association, therefore their rights as owners were not in jeopardy at all. They chose not to pursue any of the documented avenues to be heard, only to complain about the process that saw them punished. I can't feel badly about them at all, nor do I feel badly about someone complaining about social media.

They are still allowed to write editorials, stand on soap boxes, create their own websites where they are free to say whatever they would like. They can write to congressmen, and they are not in danger of having the government arrest them as dissidents. Their arguments are exceptionally overblown.

No problem agreeing with this in concept. The concern is who makes the decisions because I contend there are "degrees" & "grey areas". To me, there's no concern about banning Trump, there is concern about others.

The amusing thing about those European statements on Twitter banning of Trump is that those countries have far more stringent laws against hate speech. Germany criminalizes hate speech (even on social media). France has similar. Both ban Holocaust denial. They just think the government should be the one banning speech.

In my experience, a lot of Europeans are shocked at what Americans are allowed to say without government sanction.

I didn't think about the banning of "holocaust denial". It's understandable and (I think) approximates the Trump ban.

So yeah, "they just think the government should be the one banning speech" is a pretty good response. It does seem to be the pot calling the kettle black.
