Tom Devine for more modern Scottish History ("The Scottish Nation: A History, 1700-2000" and "Scotland's Empire"). He's a proper historian, Head of Scottish History at Edinburgh University, so he can be a bit dry but both readable and well reviewed.
For more all-encompassing "The Story of a Nation" by Magnus Magnusson is good. Anything by John Prebble is readable but he sometimes gets smacked for being more interested in telling a good story instead of being a proper historian. Edit - Just checked Amazon.com and Tom Devine's books are listed as T.M.Devine on there. Last edited by Critch : 01-19-2013 at 07:20 PM. |

There's a pair of very engaging novels based on a modern-day MP reviewing his Scottish roots that I enjoyed. They walk through Scottish history, from prehistoric legends, through the Picts, all the way to modern day, told in story form.
Written by Michael Phillips, an editor of Scottish novelist George MacDonald's work (MacDonald was an inspiration to J.R.R. Tolkein and C.S. Lewis), they aren't meant to be accurate, but to bring the legends to life. "Legend of the Celtic Stone" is the first; "An Ancient Strife" is the second and final volume in the "Caledonia Series."
