Ok - that worked. While I am no graphics magician, I don't think the image above is that awful. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to take the image of Hollenbach and have it in front of the ESPN logo, but it'll do for now.

and here's my lame newspaper...

Admittedly, this one needs a lot of work.

Ok - that's the end of the test phase. I still need to work on my templates, but the proof of concept is finished

I'm not sure if the real thing is going to be bigger, but on my 20" screen with a decent size text, the text of the article is difficult to read. Otherwise, it looks good.

Yeah, it's supposed to be that Greek "Lorem ipsum" text, not really meant to be read. I was hoping I could find a way for text to follow around a picture, but I had to do the whole thing by hand. Yuck. I'm going to have to read up on this.

This dynasty looks like it's going to be two-fold - an NCAA dynasty as well as a "learning Paint Shop" dynasty. Yeehah!

Friedgen Fired After Bizarre, Gun-toting Press Conference

College Park, MD - Ralph Friedgen was immediately fired today as the head coach of the Maryland Terrapins after he brandished a submachine gun during his training camp press conference. Slurring his speech, Friedgen spoke of "flesh eating monkeys" and emails from Florence Henderson telling him to "cut everyone on the team not named Greg, Pete or Bobby."
Athletic Director Debbie Yow only commented that candidates for the job are currently being lined up for interviews. "This is a bad time for us. We're just starting training camp and beginning recruiting. We need to get someone in here as soon as possible."

Maryland Hires Virtual Unknown

College Park, MD (AP) - The University of Maryland announced today that it had hired Craig Scarborough as its new football coach.

"I'm excited and perplexed," said Craig Scarborough in a candid moment. "I don't have much experience coaching. I'm an assistant coach for my son's Under-8 soccer team, but that's been about it thus far."

Scarborough was not the only one perplexed at the press conference announcing his hiring. Mokie Nokes, football beat writer for the Baltimore Sun, threw his hands up and launched an expletive-laden tirade at Maryland AD Debbie Yow. "This is why we will perpetually be at the bottom of the ACC, you miserable $%#@!"

To calm the audience down, a slideshow was presented showing Scarborough's vast coaching experience. Unfortunately, it consisted of only one slide and that slide was of Scarborough and his daughter in a pumpkin patch.

At the conclusion of the event, Yow said, "We have tremendous confidence in Craig. I have a feeling he's going to be around here for a long time."

Scarborough Seen in Tawdry Dance With Unknown Female

Special to the Baltimore Sun - Mokies Nokes Reporting - It has been confirmed that there are pictures floating around the Internet showing newly-hired Maryland football coach Craig Scarborough embracing an unknown female in what can only be described as "some form of pathetic excuse for dancing."

The picture in question, in massively over-sized format.

One can only imagine how Scarborough will be able to coach a young Terrapins team if he can't keep his own personal life in order. Socialist Ben Dover muses, "If there's one thing we've learned over the years is that football coaches who engage in dance with unknown women usually don't win bowl games."

Both Craig Scarborough and his wife were unreachable and therefore presumed unwilling to comment on this article.

Retraction: Scarborough Apparently Not A Jerk, Only Incompetent

The Baltimore Sun would like to apologize for yesterday's article implying that head coach Craig Scarborough participated in non-NCAA sanctioned "tawdry" dances with unknown women. According to sources, the photos circulating on the Internet were only of Scarborough twirling his daughter. Apparently, there are no NCAA rules barring coaches from twirling their daughters at social events. The Sun would also like to apologize to Craig's wife for implying that he was twirling unknown women without her knowledge.

Scarborough Admits: "I'm Not Sure What I'm Doing."
College Park, MD (AP) - He's only had a couple of weeks to get acquainted with the university and his staff, but already Maryland head coach Craig Scarborough has made an indelible mark on the program. Unfortunately, it's not really the kind of mark the university had hoped.

In the two weeks he's been here Scarborough has run a very democratic regime. In practice, he often has the players choose the drill they want to run. Some would say he does this because he's not aware of which drill to run. "The first day all we did was run around. Then, we'd get a drink. Then, he'd say, 'ok, more laps!'" admitted running back Lance Ball. "The second day was jumping-jack day. I think he forgot about them though. We haven't done one since."

Because of his poor name recall Scarborough has been reduced to yelling, "Quarterback! Quarterback!" when referring to starter Sam Hollenbach. "Yeah, my wife always jokes with me about that. I can recognize a face, but I have to say, 'hey chief' or 'hey buddy' a lot. Give me a few weeks and I'll learn their names."

"Sure, I think we were looking for a smoother transition, but I think Craig is really going to surprise everyone. He's a great leader. The kids really took to Crazy Hat Day last Thursday," said Maryland Athletic Director Debbie Yow.

Still, others have wondered aloud whether Maryland will be ready for their season opener against William and Mary. "This is a team that is just soft. Sure, they can run laps, but they're not acquiring the skills they need to be successful on game day," said rivals.com analyst Oscar de la Renta.

Scarborough laments, "I'm not sure how well we'll do this year. I have to admit, I'm not really good. I'm kind of scared. Oh, we'll be alright. I think."

Maryland begins their season September 2nd at Byrd Stadium.

Maryland Ushers in Scarborough Era with 45-0 Victory
College Park, MD - Sometimes it only takes a victory to quiet the naysayers. While it's too early to say for sure that will happen here, it will certainly help quell the Maryland faithful as they continue to watch a situation get weirder and weirder. How weird? Try these for size:

- Before the game Scarborough announced that he was having so much trouble remembering his player's names that he would rename them himself. "The kids just have to believe in me. In my heart I know this is right," said Scarborough. Minutes later he said to starting quarterback Sam Hollenbach, "You don't look like a Hollenbach to me. You look more like a....Waters. Yeah...J. Waters...we'll complete your first name later."

- William & Mary was forced to wear generic white uniforms because someone had accidentally washed a red hat with their away uniforms at the university's laundromat, causing the real jerseys to be dyed pink.

- Scarborough delivered his stirring pre-game speech via his alter-ego dummy, Mr. Poppy. "Yeah, that was kind of weird," said starting runningback J. Faulk (aka Lance Ball). "He kept on screaming at me to 'look me in the eye when I'm talking to you'. I kept on telling him I was, but I think coach just had a bad angle and couldn't see."

Still, even with that inauspicious start, it didn't take Maryland long to exert itself on the hapless Indians. After an opening 3-and-out for the Terps, William and Mary promptly fumbled the return and J. Faga picked it up for a 22-yard TD. It was only a minute into the game and the rout was on. That, however, didn't stop coach from Scarborough from pulling out all the stops. Despite leading 31-0 at the end of the first quarter, Scarborough was heard screaming from the sidelines, "Do it for Mr. Poppy! Do it for Mr. Poppy". In the end, it looks like Maryland did indeed do it for Mr. Poppy.

It's kind of laborious, actually, but I'm getting better at it.

On the 360 version you can take a snapshot during any instant replay. I do that, then save it to my memory card. Using the Datel transfer kit, I send it to my PC over the USB port. I then need to do the following: convert the image saved via the Datel kit to an Explorer360 compatible file. This is done via a freeware program called "XIC". After I do this, I load up the image into Explorer360 and I drag and drop them onto a VBS script (again, available via freeware) and rename them as .jpgs. Then, I putz around with them in Paint Shop Pro to get them online. It's a pain in the butt, but I think it really adds to the dynasty to allow EVERYONE to see the big plays and players.

I'm going to do my first national round-up in a couple days. Hopefully, I'll have time to play the next game (against Middle Tennessee State) on Friday. Look for more updates on that day.

I've taken some snapshots, but done nothing with them. That does sound really labor intensive to get them in here, and makes this dynasty even more impressive than it already was. Keep up the good work

Wow. That sounds like a pain. I think I would just take pictures of my television screen and post those. But then I am a lazy bastard. I love that snapshot function on the 360. I try to take a least one in every game.

Maryland Upset by Mid Tennessee, 31-17
College Park (AP) - A soggy day, and a young upstart team rains on Maryland's parade. Certainly not what coach Scarborough expected when his highly-favored squad met up with Middle Tennessee State. "Frankly, we didn't expect to roll today, but I was pretty confident we'd come away with a victory. This is certainly a kick in the proverbial gut."

Really, it didn't have to be this way. After Middle Tennessee St. took the opening kickoff, the Maryland defense came up big, forcing a 3-and-out. Maryland then took the ensuing drive down to State's 8 yard line. On a 3rd and goal, a dropped near-certain TD pass forced the Terp FG unit onto the field. A muffed snap forced the kick wide left, and you could feel the momentum shift as well as the ultimate fate slip through Maryland's hands. Mid Tenn State would score a touchdown on their next drive and Maryland was destined to fight from behind the entire day.

"We let them take it to us, rather than us take it to them," said Scarborough. "We stunk. The whole team stunk. I'm at a loss for words."

It doesn't get easier for the Terps as they face #9 West Virginia next week.
