Baltimore Orioles (OOTP 6.51)

Thanks to MizzouRah's 6.51 thread, I've decided to start my own. After being disappointed by OOTP2006, I've gone back to 6.51 while 2006 remains uninstalled on my PC. I've taken over the Baltimore Orioles, as usual. I'm using CubbyFan's opening day 2006 rosters with a couple of changes made to them to make the O's roster more current as of today.

The O's are always on the losing end to the MFY's, Red Sox, and even the Blue Jays as of late. Tampa Bay is also a young and talented team and could force the O's into the cellar. The O's have not had a winning record since 1997 when they went wire to wire in the AL East before losing to the the Indians in the ALCS.

I hope to end the streak of losing seasons and bring back a winning tradition that Charm City had been used to.

Roster

Catchers - Ramon Hernandez was a big offseason pick up by the Orioles and will start at catcher. Backing him up will be Javy Lopez, who is also the DH. Eli Whiteside is in AAA, but will never amount to much, and will be an average back up at best. Brandon Snyder could turn out to be a star catcher in the Majors, but is only 19 years old and will take some time to develop, but he did show good signs after being drafted last season.

First Base - Jay Gibbons moves back to his minor league position of first base, as I don't think highly of him as an outfielder. Kevin Millar was picked up in the offseason and will spell Jay at first. Jeff Conine won't see much playing time here, and at 40 years old it's only a matter of time before he is cut loose. Alejandro Freire, Mike Huggins, and Corey Shafer are the only prospects at first in the organization, and it's doubtful any of them will be anything but minor league filler.

Second Base - Brian Roberts will start here and be our leadoff man as usual. He came into his own last season and is one of the top second basemen in the Majors. Chris Gomez backs up Roberts, and also fills in at short and third. Eddy Garabito & Desi Relaford are the only options in the minors, both at AAA. Hopefully neither of them see the light of day in Baltimore.

Shortstop - Miguel Tejada is the star of the organization and one of the top players in baseball. The farm system is barren at short.

Third Base - Melvin Mora has solidified himself as one of the top hitting third basemen, and has become good in the field after adjusting to the position. David Newhan backs up Melvin, as well as all outfield positions. He's the so called 'super sub' like Melvin once was before he became an everyday player. Fernando Tatis is in AAA, and will never make the Orioles unless we have a bad rash of injuries. Napoleon Calzado is in AA, and is a career minor leaguer. Tripper Johnson is the only prospect at the position, but needs to develop faster to amount to anything as he is 23 years old and in A ball.

Outfield - Luis Matos, Corey Patterson, and Nick Markakis make up our starting outfield. Matos seems to hit better the more he plays, and will try to prove that in left. If not, he is on a short leash and could be replaced quickly. Patterson was brought over from the Cubs for two scrubs, and hopefully the change of scenery does him well. He is lightning on the basepaths, and has shown the ability to hit before. Markakis was a first round pick in 2003, and at 22 years old will learn on the job in Baltimore. He is a converted pitcher with a cannon for an arm, and could roam right field for years to come. Val Majewski is the closest outfield prospect to being Major League ready. He'll start in AAA. Jeff Fiorentino will begin in A ball. He was up for a surprise cup of coffee with the Orioles last season and struggled and took him a while to get his swing back when he returned to the minors. Nolan Reimold is the top hitting prospect in the organization, and will also begin in A ball.

Starting Pitchers - Erik Bedard will be our ace. He started off 2005 on fire before being injured and then didn't regain his form afterwards. Kris Benson was brought over from the Mets, he'll be our #2 pitcher and will give us a league average performance at worst. Rodrigo Lopez is good when he's on his game, dreadful when he isn't. Daniel Cabrera is an enigma, he has some of the best pure stuff in the Majors but lacks control. Tall overpowering pitchers take a few years to harness their ability, and at 24 years old Daniel has plenty of time to do just that. Russ Ortiz was picked up following a release from Arizona. He's on a short leash, as his spot can be given back to Bruce Chen, or one of our younger pitchers.

The minors are stocked with good arms. Hayden Penn is our closest to being ready, and was already called up last season for a brief period. Brian Finch, Garrett Olson, Adam Loewen, Brandon Erbe, and J.J. Johnson are all other names you should know that are in the minors. All have the potential to be #1 to #3 starters.

Relievers - We feature a relatively young bullpen in Baltimore. Chris Britton, Sendy Rleal, and Kurt Birkins are all rookies that pitch in middle relief. Todd Williams does the mop up duties and is good at getting ground balls. LaTroy Hawkins was picked up in a trade with the Giants and will be our setup man. Chris Ray became the closer when B.J. Ryan bolted for Toronto, but it is likely that Ray can match Ryan's numbers. Ray is only 24 years old and pitched well in Baltimore last year, and could be a dominant closer for years to come.

We end April of 2006 with a 15-11 record, good for 3rd place in the AL East.

Jay Gibbons has gotten off to a hot start, hitting .313 with 8 HR and leading the league with 28 RBI. Miguel Tejada is doing just as well, batting .348 with 8 HR and 22 RBI. Melvin Mora ends the month hitting .340 with 7 HR and 18 RBI. The big surprise so far has been Corey Patterson, who is hitting .344 with 5 HR, 17 RBI, 3 triples, 6 doubles, and 4 SB. Brian Roberts and Luis Matos have disappointed so far, hitting .216 and .151 respectively.

We also had some good pitching for the month. Erik Bedard has a 4-1 record with a 2.66 ERA. Dan Cabrera is 3-1 with a 3.71 ERA, and Russ Ortiz is 2-1 with a 2.86 ERA.

The pitching continues to hold us up, as we're 2nd in the Majors with a 3.71 ERA. The starting staff continues to all have ERA under 5, and the biggest surprise has to be Russ Ortiz. He is 6-4, but sports a 2.73 ERA, best in the AL. The bullpen continues to be solid, anchored by 24 year old closer Chris Ray. Ray has saved 20 games in 21 chances.

A .274 team batting average is good for 8th in the Majors. Miguel Tejada continues to carry the load on offense, hitting .301 with 23 HR and 63 RBI.

The trade deadline is near, and it is expected a few Orioles will be on the move. Likely candidates are pitcher Rodrigo Lopez (6-6, 4.31 ERA), C/DH Javy Lopez (.280, 10 HR, 37 RBI), 1B Jeff Conine (.295 in 44 AB's), OF Luis Matos (hitting just .257), and pitcher Kris Benson (8-6, 4.95 ERA.)

The overall team ERA jumped from 3.71 to 4.13, 7th in the Majors. The hitting stayed consistent and is at .277, also 7th in the Majors.

At the beginning of the month a deal was made with Colorado, we sent C/DH Javy Lopez and RP Todd Williams to the Rockies in exchange for 1B Ryan Shealy and 3B Jeff Baker. Shealy was blocked at 1B in Colorado by Todd Helton, and has potential to be a good power hitter but is already 26 years old. Baker also has good pop, hitting 17 HR's in AA for Colorado. He's in AAA for us, while Shealy is our DH.

The day before the deadline, we made our only other trade. SP Rodrigo Lopez and RP Luis Ramirez were sent to Boston for OF Wily Mo Pena. Pena has good power, and we lack that from our current outfield. He is only hitting .238 with 4 HR and 25 RBI, but we hope he can turn it around here. He'll get the starting nod in LF, while Luis Matos moves to the bench.

Bruce Chen replaces Lopez in the rotation. Chen had been in the bullpen. With Todd Williams depature, we called up Eddy Rodriguez from AAA to take his spot in the bullpen. Our final move of the month was designating 1B Jeff Conine for assignment. RP Jacobo Sequea was called up to fill out the 25 man roster.

We suffered on first major injury on July 30th as SP Kris Benson went down with a strained back muscle. He'll be out for 5 weeks. Eric DuBose was called up from AAA to replace him.

He has 26 saves in 29 chances after July now. Pretty close stats to what he's done for the real O's so far.

Ray in my dynasty: 3.60 ERA, 26 SV in 29 chances. 45 IP, 49 K's, 14 Runs, 14 BB.
Ray in real life: 3.19 ERA, 22 SV in 23 chances. 36.2 IP, 33 K's, 18 runs, 8 walks.

We go 13-13 in August, and are in a heated race with Toronto and New York for 2nd place and likely the wild card. 10 of our final games are against New York and Boston, and we also have a series with Detroit who are also in the wild card hunt.

We remain 7th in the Majors in hitting at .279, and we're 8th in ERA with 4.23.

The Majors saw it's second no-hitter of this season in the last week of August. Giants pitcher Jason Schmidt no hit Cincy, striking out 10 while walking 5.

What a finish to the season... After we stay in 2nd the entire month of September, Toronto rattles off 6 wins in a row and moves a game ahead of us in the wild card and in the AL East. Kris Benson comes off the DL on October 1st and picks up the win for us against Boston, while Toronto drops their game to the Yankees.

We're set for a tiebreaker with Toronto. Erik Bedard vs. Gustavo Chacin. What was set to be a pitchers duel turned into anything but, with Bedard giving up 5 runs in 6 innings and Chacin giving up 6 in 6 innings. Fast forward to the 11th inning, we strike with a run in the top of the inning. We pull Eddy Rodriguez after giving up a run in the bottom of the 11th and turn it over to LaTroy Hawkins. Hawkins procedes to give up 3 hits without recording an out and we lose 12-11 in 11 innings.
