BBCF - Temple Turnaround

*Editors note: I know my original BBCF died in a blaze of glory as the program has some nuances you need to pay attention to, or you ruin the game. I will make sure that this will not happen, including daily file backups*

"How did I get here?" He said to no one in particular, standing in the tunnel, looking out at the turf of Lincoln Heinz field.

"My dream, the chance of a lifetime, all erupted around me, in the matter of months" He shakes his head a little as he finishes the statement.

"Lord knows I will need all the luck in the world, because there are going to be over 30,000 people in these seats later on today" With that, he turns and heads back into the tunnel with the knowledge and vision in his mind, that today, is a day he would never forget.

"Today is a new day in Temple history, as we look to shake off the despair, the tarnish of failure that has been associated with Temple football, and especially the winless season that was a precursor for our coaching search" AD Bill Bradshaw declared to the press.

"As many of you know, our coaching search has been the butt of many jokes on ESPN, your papers, and basically anywhere sports are discussed. In fact, if I remember correctly, Jim Rome called us "The laughing stock of college football and the Temple board should disband the team and focus the money towards basketball"

The AD managed to finish the line with a smile, not just a small one either, but ear to ear. The press room erupted in laughter, as they all honestly felt this way, but didn't dare say it, because this story, has a chance of making someone famous.

"I don't blame any of you for your statements, if I was in your position, I probably would have made the same ones, but we hit rock bottom, and figured creativity, and ingenuity would get us out of the hole we are in. We opened our search up everywhere, and we managed to find our coach, right here in Pennsylvania."

Everyone knew who it was, they all stayed glued to the television, as the reality show, that Temple kicked off with NBC, had garnered top notch ratings as people watched with morbid interest and fascination at the survivor type set up.

"Coach Dustin Marcellino proved himself not only to the other players of the coach challange, but the viewers around the U.S. as the man that would be fit to turn this team around, and without further ado, I present him to you."

Bulbs flash, people shift anxiously in their seats as they prepare the assault of questions that will hit this coach right now.

To him, the competition seemed like forever, as he recruited, negotiated, devised gameplans and worked out his own team for the coaches challange. That team, managed to go undefeated in the 10 week run, and took home the championship.

Now, he is sitting at his desk, within the university, going over budget numbers, devising gameplans, recruiting situations, as well as setting up his schedule for the year.

Ask him, and he would tell you he is overwhelmed, but wouldn't change it for anything.

The paper in his hands, the list of expectations from the AD and the Board. Nothing bad.

Quote:
Dustin,

We honestly feel you can do an astounding job with the program, however we want you to know we are dead serious about the goals.
We feel you can accomplish the following:

Finish top 3 among the independents
Beat Syracuse

Thanks and good luck,

Bill Bradshaw
AD Temple University

The press were in an uproar, the school board went into panic mode, and the players, well let's just say they can't wait for the season to start.

What would cause the furor, how bout the schedule that Dustin managed to set up for the Owls in his first season.
  • Week 1 - Maryland
  • Week 2 - @ Virgina
  • Week 3 - @ #1 USC
  • Week 4 - BYE
  • Week 5 - #21 Notre Dame
  • Week 6 - Florida Int
  • Week 7 - @ #18 Wisconsin
  • Week 8 - @ Army
  • Week 9 - @ Navy
  • Week 10 - Rice
  • Week 11 - Troy
  • Week 12 - Hawaii
  • Week 13 - BYE
  • Week 14 - @ #12 Georgia
  • Week 15 - BYE
The amazing thing here when asked why Syracuse wasn't on the schedule, Coach Marcellino fired the first salvo into what should turn into a pretty heated rival, his statement was along the lines of "They were afraid to play us, kept turning down the scheduling offers"

at

The roar of the crowd is deafening as they exit the tunnel and take the field. This team is supposed to be a new beginning, and the first series, they start to move the ball, and then the mistakes happen. A false start, that stalls the drive on Marylands side of the field. Downhill from then on, the mistakes stacked one on top of the other.

Coach Marcellino was furious screaming and yelling on the sideline, 9 penalties for 56 yards, all stalled momentum building drives. The defense, arm tackling the running back, it was a pitiful display......

The papers all summed it up, with phrases like "laughing stock", "End the joke already, and bring in the real coach" and in fact, quoted one of the players saying he hated playing for the program.

Who that player is know one knows yet, but Coach is making sure that dissent will be stated as a group, because they won't let one lone cancer ruin it. The workouts this week have been hell, and looking at the players, they have been on edge, and looking for an excuse.

Predictions have Virginia as 27 point favorites, hell people were saying if the team was able to beat the spread that would be a minor victory alone.

Coach Marcellino had different plans, he was adjusting a lot of the gameplans, focusing his defense on the run a bit more with multiple position blitzes, forcing coverage mixes. Offensively, the single back set was going to be their bread and butter, bringing in the pro in shorter yardage situations.

The goal, was to win and win big.

Week 2
Close to 20,000 more fans showed up for Virginias home game than what appeared last week at Lincoln Heinz....they felt like they were towering above the coach.

The game was well fought in 3 of the 4 quarters. It was the second quarter self destruction that slaughtered this team. Granted, we would have lost by 18 if we could have stopped the bleeding, but it wasn't to be, the loss of our starting LT in the middle of the game hurt as well.

It's a good thing the board will give Dustin more than 1 season to attempt to turn things around, looking at the Virginia game, it is needed.

Sitting there at his desk, he notice one positive out of all this darkness, not one player was suspended for academic violations, hey at least he has one thing going right.

Next up, USC, hopefully Temple can play a respectable game against them.

No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't even make the game competitive. Coach tried everything, but was not able to get the steam moving inside of anyone on the team. The WR with the hands, Caron, probably had his worse game ever dropping a multitude of passes that were right in his hands.

So far the story is a bunch of missed opportunities this season.

Looking at his desktop, hate mail, love mail, and even a few chain letters hoping he could get some luck from somewhere.

Dustins feeling was he needed to catch a leprechaun in order to turn things around here.

One thing this week, he had a bye so no loss.

Another tough opponent on a schedule that has a chance of probably being on of the toughest schedules of the season so far...the goal for coach, is to attempt to break even with it.

The game itself was a horrible attempt at what is called football as the team managed nothing in the first three quarters on offense, it was all in the 4th when the fireworks started, against the ND 2nd team defense.
