Beginner's Game sign up thread

Post in this thread if you are interested. WW "veterans" are not allowed to play. For the most part, I will let each individual determine if they are eligible for this game or not.

I will also post an announcement in General Discussion.

So far the following people have expressed interest.

1. Izulde
2. Lonestargirl
3. Spleen1015
4. Lighthousekeeper
5. Glengoyne
6. Neuqua
7. PackerFanatic
8. GoldenEagle
9. Bek
10. DaddyTorgo
11. oliegirl
12. Anxiety

Basic Rules - Within the group of players, there will be a secret group of "wolves." The wolves know who they are, but nobody else does. All players are nominally "villagers" - the wolves are hiding in their midst. The wolves are allowed to communicate freely via pm, im, email, telephone, etc. The villagers are only allowed to communicate in thread (although in some games there are exceptions to this.)

Gameplay has 2 phases. During the day phase, the village chooses one player to be "lynched." During the night phase, the wolves gather in secret (using pm) and choose one player to "eat." The object of the village is to lynch all wolves. The object of the wolves is normally to get to a 1 to 1 ratio of villagers to wolves, since at that point they can control the lynches.

In this game, and in most games, there will be 1 villager who will be a "seer." In the night phase, the seer chooses one player to "scan" with his crystal ball. The seer will then know if the player is a wolf or a villager. There will also be a "bodyguard" - this is a villager who, each night, chooses one player to guard. If the wolves choose to attack the guarded player, that attack will typically fail - the details of what exactly happens vary from game to game.

There are many other permutations possible. Feel free to ask any questions.

In all honesty, I'm a little bit uncomfortable with this idea.

Two reasons. First, I foresee a (slim) possibility of the newer players becoming proxies for competition between older players. Second, I think it's important for people to forge their own style. In the last game I ran, I believe some players recieved some general guidance from some people, which I'm fine with. I think it went well last time with most of the new players, so I guess I don't see the need.

I'm keeping an open mind. Right now, I'm just hoping to get enough players.

I might be interested, but how often do you need to access the forum and make posts? Most days I'm away from internet access for almost the whole day and I'm worried about how that affects my ability to play.

Generally you have to check in at least once a day.

How much involvement are we talking about day to day? Check in at least once...I can do. Multiple times at stretches, would pose a problem.

If the time commitment isn't very heavy, I'm interested.

If you can check in once a day, you can play. Basically, once per day, you need to accuse another player of being a wolf. Some roles will additionally have night actions, but those can actually be sent in before night. For example, suppose you are the seer, and you can only log on at lunchtime - you would read the thread, decide to vote for spleen1015 for whatever reason, and pm me a ranking of players you would like to scan with your crystal ball (ie, scan spleen1015, or if he gets lynched, lonestargirl) that night. That would work fine, and be perfectly acceptable.

Some peopel dedicate more time then others to the game but as long as you can check once or twice a day you will be good. If you have a special role that requires a little more of a commitment such as a wolf you may need to dedicate a little more time so you can communicate with your teammates, but that is usually at night.

I'm like a lot of you who have questions, where I work all day and can't post. And then I have a second job, so some days I can't post at all, unless it is really early or very late (and few people are around then). As long as you're clear about it (post that you will be gone all day, for instance) and you get your votes in, you should be good.

If you have a night free, though, I would recommend at least once being around at deadline. It can be a lot of fun following along and reacting with the other players, and that's a good time to be around.

A lot of the earlier games ran with 10-15 people. I certainly don't think you have to have 20 people to run a game, but you have to have a big enough ratio to allow for two bad guys - otherwise you run the risk of a one day game.

thx for assuming things for me...you do know what assuming does right???...makes an a&% out of you and me. Luckily for you it paid off this time. I would love to play in this game. I have the next week off, so depending when the start date is, I will have plenty of time. I'm glad to see that we are getting many new prospects playing in these games. Should make it interesting.

maybe we should recruit a few vets as fill in spots in case we don't get a couple more people. If nothing else the vets may be able to spurn on some discussion at quiet times.

I think recruiting is the right way to go, but I would suggest we reach out to people like Nequea and Packersfan who gave WW a try, but didn't stick with it. But I think we should wait until Monday work day before worrying about filling out the game. All of these have been weekend signups and a bump on cronin's thread Monday morning could attract the attention needed.

That's my plan. See how many sign ups I have Monday night, and if neccesary, fill out the spots with non-beginners.

maybe we could get non-controversial vets. nothing against the fights that happen in previous games, but i think it would be best for the beginners not to be introduced to these situations in there first game. just my .02.

St cronin -- Just wanted to say I might have considered this, and appreciate the effort on your part. Right now, with the seemingly neverending move from Monticello to Athens still underway, I'm not the least bit comfortable that I could give a WW game (or much else for that matter) the attention it deserves.

Maybe after my life settles down, who knows.

Pretty sure the word "stupid" has been used before in WW games.

Never seen Biggles in one of these, although I'm dying for an opportunity, post-lynch, to bemoan "Look what you've done to Mr. Bigglesworth!!!"
